12-15-2025. "HO! HO! HOLLYWOOD: SANTA CLAUSE IN CLASSIC CINEMA" (118) Long before special effects, CGI snowstorms, and big-budget holiday franchises, it fell to a small but memorable group of performers to embody the warmth, wonder, and whimsy of old St. Nick. Ever wonder about the actors who were called upon to portray Santa Claus in film and TV? These classic Santas weren't just men in red suits — they were character actors, vaudevillians, radio veterans, and Hollywood workhorses who brought their own unique spark to the role, shaping how generations of moviegoers came to imagine Father Christmas. From the twinkle-eyed charmers to the unexpectedly gruff curmudgeons, from the iconic to the nearly forgotten, we're unwrapping the stories behind the earliest portrayals that turned Santa into a cinematic tradition. So settle in with a mug of something warm, hang your stocking, and join us as we explore the jolly, joyful, and sometimes surprisingly complex history of Hollywood's first Santas. In this near-end episode of Joe & Reese's Pickle & Boot Shop, the duo kicks off with five-second "ab" workouts and Reese's mustache cop perks before Joe recounts his trailblazing fight for roofing mustaches, tattoos, and beards (complete with a suspension and tattoo-removal orders). They roast bad Christmas movies like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (but defend It's a Wonderful Life), dive into Reese's "band dad" phase and his kids' Five Iron Frenzy obsession, and ponder a last-gasp Steve Taylor guest spot. The Irish goodbye looms larger than ever. "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians" is often considered the Granddaddy of all bad Christmas films. A cheaply made kiddie flick from 1964, it is perhaps most well known for being the screen debut of a young Pia Zadora. Film critic Dave Canfield returns to the show to dissect the film's notoriety, the filmmakers' misguided intentions and what makes this public domain favorite so special. They also discuss a lesser-known yuletide oddity for kids along the same lines, "The Christmas Martian." A Canadian production made for television, it is made up of so many odd elements that don't quite go together, but that's what makes it such a fascinating watch. Finally, Dave's TV Special pick is Berke Breathed's Bloom County/Outland one-off Christmas special "Opus n' Bill's A Wish For Wings That Work," perhaps Collin's favorite Christmas special of all time. SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS, based on the 1964 film and adapted/produced/directed by Pete Lutz Martians are worried that their children are being influenced by Earth trends, so they visit the planet's wise man, who tells them that they should let their children be children, and the Earthling Santa Claus isn't such a bad thing, so their decision is to travel to Earth and kidnap the jolly old elf. The original film has been described as one of the worst films ever made, and as a result has been spoofed by theatrical companies all over the U.S. Well, the Narada Radio Company is no exception -- originally planned for a live production in December of 2024, Murphy's Law held true and strong, so they recorded it in the director's living room instead, and said director edited the voice tracks on Saturday, December 21st, and mixed all of the music and SFX on Sunday, December 22nd. Now, if you don't like the finished product...the director wishes you a very Merry Christmas. This play would not have been possible without the following voice talents: Mario Aguilar as Kimar Cassie Blackwell as Cowgirl Imelda, Winky, and Girmar Dana Gonsalves as Santa Claus, Slobo, and Martian Foreman Pete Lutz as Cowboy Dennis, Cho-Chim and Dr. Werner von Green Lisa McGrew as News Anchor, Hargo, Martian and Elf Pam Pailes as Radio Announcer and Momar Dawn Robertson as Betty and Mrs. Claus Merilee Robinson as Billy and Dennis's Maw Richard Robinson as Dropo Carl Thomas as Henderson, Lomas and Torg Bobby Vela as Announcer and Rigna Tammy Weidemann as Bomar and Shim, and Nick Wommack as Kid-TV announcer and Voldar Certain music passages by Dr. Ross Bernhardt; other music sourced from the public domain.

Or...."Fa-La-La-La-La-La-La-La-Hat -- PART ONE!"Man, oh, man. If you know this movie, you know it. If you don't, you are in for QUITE a film. For one thing, absolutely watch it. They truly do not make them like this anymore. They just don't. This quality is unmatched. It's so bad in the best way. It has it all. It has Lizzie McGuire's sister in 2013 dressed like she's in 2004 playing a 26 year old former teen mom who acts like a middle aged woman, it has a wheelchair-bound child whose father died in a car wreck who wants nothing more than to drive fast in cars who miraculously walks by the end because his paralysis was psychosomatic, it's got patient zero, it's got zero chemistry, and most of all, it has a year round hat shop that gets saved by the brilliant business decision of opening MORE hat shops. Also this is a halloween movie and a Christmas movie but thanksgiving is completely omitted. It is insane. And we were so lucky to have on the brilliant Jen Lancaster!!! Welcome back to the Horror. Cult. Trash. Other. Podcast! This is the next of this year's Christmas episodes and we're discussing the cult classic that is Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, a camp trashterpiece that features a bizarre plot that involves kidnapping Santa and two kids, an angry guy with a moustache who repeatedly tries murdering people, and a catchy banger of a theme song! Last Christmas, we gave you a Christmas special, and this year we're doing the same because we're not very imaginative. This year, to save you from tears, we're doing Paul Feig's Wham-inspired romantic comedy Last Christmas. It was poorly received on its 2019 release, but as was generally the case with 2019 we didn't know how good we all had it. Now, it's settling in to become a Christmas favourite, with all the cheesy appeal of a Netflix or Hallmark movie filtered through two key talents - Feig and screenwriter Emma Thompson - who actually know what they're doing. Join Graham, Mark and show favourite Dexter (Mark's dog) as they discuss George Michael's legacy, the recent documentaries about him, the connection between the former Yugoslavia and the KLF, and how this film gets the most out of its often-miscast stars Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. Plus appreciations of supporting player Ritu Arya and Jason Statham, the latter of whom isn't in this movie but I dunno, the conversation just went that way. If you want to help us audition for the big ice show, you can donate to our Patreon, where you'll get a bonus episode of this show every month - the next one comes out tomorrow, and it's about Santa Claus Conquers the Martians - plus weekly articles on The Twilight Zone, Red Dwarf and The X-Files and our end-of-month miscellany podcast Last Night..., which is gearing up for its own Christmas special. Follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for more.

Or...."Fa-La-La-La-La-La-La-La-Hat" -- PART TWO!"Man, oh, man. Santa Claus, Martians, freeze ray guns, killer robots and Christmas kidnaps. That's what's in Santa's sack in our last movie of the year. On top of all that, this obscure 60's sci-fi yuletide flick is a flop with the very little critics who watched it, and we're here to challenge that in our final Flopbuster of the year. Whether it's in Santa's sleigh or in a Martian UFO, let's see if we fly high-no lie or if this movie flies low-& too slow.Music by these extremely talented artists:"Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (Electro Swing Mix)" - Betty Booom & Captain Matt"Christmas Jingle Bells Rap" - TecNoTuneCheck them out at:https://electroswingthing.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@TecNoTune Thanks for tuning in.
