Author Chris Zeischegg joins us to talk about his newest book, Creation: On Art and Becoming. Chris' work is semi-autobiographical and heavily influenced by his years working in the sex industry. Longtime collaborator, Luka Fisher, serves as a muse and a thread that weaves Chris' newest collection of short stories and essays together. We discuss the book, Luka's role in both the book and Chris' life, the impact of toxic masculinity on everyone in the sex trade regardless of gender, and the shadow side of porn - all of which appear in Chris' transgressive and visceral writings. Content warning: we discuss the impact of sex work including self harm and suicidal ideation. We encourage you to take care of yourself while listening or ,skipping this week if you need to.Christopher Zeischegg is a writer, musician, and filmmaker who spent eight years working in the adult industry as performer, Danny Wylde. He is the author of five books, Creation: On Art and Unbecoming, The Magician, The Wolves that Live in Skin and Space, Body to Job, and Come to My Brother, and has contributed to Expat 4, Human Rights, Split Lips, and a variety of digital publications, such as Somesuch and The Nervous Breakdown. To support the show, join us over at patreon to get videos of each recording and see our adorable pups or follow along on IG or TikTok.There's still time to sign up for embodied coaching support with Sarah at half off at sarahtomchesson.com. With Gypsy on Broadway, Wicked on movie screens nationwide and Mama I'm A Big Girl Now off-Broadway, this seemed to be the perfect time to revisit this episode from the first season of Broadway Nation. This was the first of three episodes highlighting the principal themes of the Broadway Musical. Here I look at the single most ubiquitous and pervasive theme: “Transgressive Women”. For more than 100 years an overwhelming majority of musicals have featured transgressive female characters who break the rules, and refuse to follow the path that society has set out for them. And more often than not they are the protagonist, or co-protagonist, of the story. However, for some reason musicals are not generally perceived in this way. Most people would not identify this as one of the Broadway Musicals principal attributes. I believe that is part of their subversive power. In fact I would contend that the musicals themselves, as well as the characters, are transgressive. From “Laurey” in Oklahoma! to “Elphaba” in Wicked. From “Annie Oakley” to “Tracy Turnblad”. From “Maria” in The Sound Of Music to “Effie” in Dreamgirls. Dynamic women have always been at the center of America's signature Art Form. Learn more about your ad choices.
Spiritual awakening - and the choice to STAY on the spiritual path - is a transgressive act. In this episode of Inner Work, we'll explore what it really means to consciously decide to walk the spiritual path and make an unwavering commitment to your own evolution and awakening. They discuss Wade's background in comedy, his love for David Letterman and Seinfeld, and the challenges of enjoying comedy as a Christian. They also touch on the transgressive nature of some comedians and the balance between humor and vulgarity. In this conversation, Wade and Chase discuss the state of comedy and the role of comedians in society. They explore the idea that some comedians lack a happy life and use comedy as a way to cope with their sadness. They also touch on the topic of navigating controversial comedy as a Christian and the importance of developing a personal sniff test for what is acceptable. Wade then shifts the conversation to the concept of the Constitution being dead and the transformations that have occurred in the American order. Finally, they discuss the rise of managerialism in the church and the need to redefine success and prioritize biblical principles over cultural trends.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Background of Wade Stotts05:29 Wade's Comedy Obsession and Journey08:04 The Influence of David Letterman and Seinfeld12:48 Letterman's Transgressive Comedy21:13 The Controversy Surrounding Michael Richards28:54 Transgressive Comedy and Free Speech31:20 The Cynical Worldview of Some Comedians32:49 The Relationship Between Comedy and Happiness34:31 Navigating Controversial Comedy as a Christian42:43 The Death of the Constitution and the American Order50:39 The Rise of Managerialism in the Church56:29 Redefining Success in the ChurchSupport the Show.Sign up for the Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/chasedavisFollow Full Proof Theology on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/fullprooftheology/Follow Full Proof Theology on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/fullprooftheology/

This week: the usual targets First: Trump is on trial again – and America is bored rather than scandalised. This is his 91st criminal charge and his supporters see this as politicised prosecution. As an American, Kate Andrews has seen how the law can be used as a political weapon – so why, she asks, is Britain importing the same system? In less than 18 months, the police have been sent to investigate Rishi Sunak for his seat-belt, Nicola Sturgeon for campaign funds, and Angela Rayner over her electoral registry: each time, the complainant is political and the process is the punishment. Kate joins the podcast alongside The Spectator's editor Fraser Nelson to discuss. (01:34) Then: Confessions of a defecting Starmtrooper. Katy Balls speaks to Jamie Driscoll, the former Labour North of Tyne mayor, who failed Keir Starmer's selection process to be mayor of the soon-to-be-created North East metro mayoralty. He's now running as an independent, backed by Andy Burnham, while half of the Labour council groups are refusing to endorse the official Labour candidate. ‘I know people who have left the Labour party who describe it as leaving an abusive relationship,' he says. You can read the full interview in the magazine, but we have a short extract of their discussion on the podcast. (13:44) And finally: Our reporter Max Jeffery gatecrashed a party of the Extinction Rebellion youth offshoot Youth Demand!, whose stunts have included targeting MPs' houses and dousing the Ministry of Defence in red ink. ‘I'm so ketty!' one of the partygoers told him (referring to the drugs she was on). ‘They wrote ideas on big sheets of paper and left them lying at the back of the bar while they celebrated. “Rishi Sunak pool/pond – dyeing it red – pool party?” someone wrote. “CEOs' houses”; “water (Thames)”; “Planes/private jets”; “Eton”; “Transgressive stuff”.' Max joins the podcast alongside Youth Demand! spokesperson Ella Ward. (24:18) Hosted by Lara Prendergast and Gus Carter. Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

EPISODE 1876: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Bulent Atalay, author of BEYOND GENIUS, about how Shakespeare, Da Vinci, Newton, Beethoven and Einstein all shared the same kind of transgressive mindsDescribed by the Washington Post, Smithsonian Magazine, NPR and PBS as a “Modern Renaissance Man,” Bulent Atalay is a scientist, artist and author. After his participation in a scientifically incongruous archaeological expedition to Mt. Ararat in Eastern Turkey — one in which the late astronaut James Irwin was also a member — the Washington Post carried the story, “Indiana Atalay and the Search for the Ark.” With roots in Turkey and England, Atalay now resides in the United States. His grandfather was a Turkish military officer who survived the Battle of Gallipoli in WWI, only to die while fighting against Lawrence of Arabia in 1916. His father was a military officer and diplomat who served as diplomatic courier to European capitals during WWII, and subsequently held successive assignments as military attaché to London, Paris, and Washington. Read "A Tribute to Kemal Atalay." He received his early schooling at Eton in England and St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware, the institution which served as the site of the 1989 Robin Williams film, Dead Poets Society. He went into physics by accident when a secretary in the admissions office at Georgetown University read his intended career as "physicist" instead of "physician," and he stayed in physics when he found he had latent interest in the field. His advanced education includes BS, MS, MA, PhD and postdoctoral studies, completed at Georgetown, Princeton, University of California-Berkeley, and Oxford University. A professor of physics in Virginia now, he has previously been a member of the Department of Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford, as well as the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where Einstein spent the last twenty-five years of his life. An accomplished artist, Atalay has presented his works in one-man exhibitions in London and Washington, and his two books of lithographs — Lands of Washington and Oxford and the English Countryside — can be found in the permanent collections of Buckingham Palace, the Smithsonian, and the White House. Ten years after its release by Smithsonian Books in April 2004, his best selling book, Math and the Mona Lisa, has had numerous printings in English, and appeared in thirteen languages. His last book, Leonardo's Universe, coauthored with former student Keith Wamsley, was released by National Geographic Books in 2009, and declared "... one of ten must-have books for the year," by the Britannica Blog writer. It has appeared in English and Japanese. In April, 2019, the National Geographic Society released the book as a "bookazine," abridged to 25,000 words with the title Leonardo da Vinci: Celebrating the Renaissance Man. Atalay's most recent book, Beyond Genius, identifying the common qualities and conditions crucial in producing Leonardo, Shakespeare, Newton, Beethoven, and Einstein,” five "transformative geniuses," who redefined their respective fields, is scheduled for release on November 7, 2023 by Pegasus Books.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.

Guest: Alicia Cordisco (Twitter) (Arizona, USA) https://linktr.ee/alicia_in_chains Our heart was clean now we're stained class at Judas Priestcast! Two longtime Judas Priest fanatics (and new friends) George (he) and Hattie (she/any) come together from opposite sides of the world, united in their love of the iconic heavy metal band. This time around, we wrap up the Pride series with Alicia Cordisco (she), a prolific guitarist/vocalist/songwriter in the underground metal scene, of recently the bands Project: Roenwolfe, Transgressive, and Wraithstorm. Alicia tells us all about how she set out to make music for the benefit of queer and marginalized people, what the metal community succeeds at and where it could improve, and her choice to be extremely visible as a trans musician. Later, your hosts break down "Stained Class", a raging speedfest from the 1978 album of the same name. As expected, George, Hattie, and Alicia find plenty of socio-political commentary in these lyrics, and we take some time to check out a live version played by Halford in 2001. Time has slashed each untouched thing, so hit that play button and be a stained class king with Judas Priestcast! Share what you think about "Stained Class"! In this episode of Our Classroom, David Low joins to discuss Transgressive Humor in Classrooms. Classroom Notes 1. Transgressive humor as a critical literacy practice 2. Examples of how teachers can support students in using humor as ways to address critical topics 3. Comedians that use humor well to address critical topics Welcome to Our Classroom! David E. Low (he/him; @DLow_Literacy) is an Associate Professor of Literacy Education at California State University, Fresno. His research examines how children and youth critically theorize race, gender, power, and identity using multimodal literacy practices. In particular, David explores students' use of humor and the comics medium as vehicles to critique dominant discourses and rewrite them. If there is a single through-line to David's work, it is a deep and abiding interest in liminality and change, and what happens within the in-between spaces of radical possibility. Dave Okumu & The 7 Generations - "Blood Ah Go Run (feat. Wesley Joseph & ESKA)" from the 2023 album I Came From Love on Transgressive. Mercury Prize-nominated artist Dave Okumu returns with his new project, Dave Okumu & The 7 Generations, a name he says honors "my actual ancestors, the ancestors of others, my musical ancestors, and my descendants." Their debut album, I Came From Love, will be released April 14th via Transgressive Records. In a press statement, the UK-based guitarist/producer explains, "the narrative of this record emerged in tandem with the origin of its musical journey, through a rumination on survival, ancestry and heritage. The account of the young west African girl who was transported to South Carolina in 1756 and sold to the slave owner Elias Ball and the subsequent unearthing and presentation of her story to her descendants became an emblematic framework for these songs, opening doors to many aspects of the diasporic experience. The music stands in loving defiance of any forces that would seek to disconnect us from our collective history. As I consciously stand before my ancestors through the medium of this sound world, I proclaim that ‘You survived so I might live.'” On today's Song of the Day, in particular, he reflects on the New Cross house fire in 1981 that killed 13 Black teenagers in South London. “Living in an area as culturally rich and diverse as southeast London, I feel touched by an atmosphere of transcendence forged through a particular type of adversity. When you walk the streets and so many cultures are represented within a community, it's difficult not to ask the questions ‘how did these people get here and what have their ancestors passed through so that I can have the life I am experiencing now?' The story of the New Cross Fire and the subsequent response from different factions of society is one such trial, embodying a process which came to shape a significant element of the discourse around race relations in this country. Living in this part of London, I want to remember and honor those who lost their lives in that fire as their sacrifice, along with many others, feeds directly into my experience of this world.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this very special live episode in partnership with AIM, MPG and Transgressive, John is joined by Let's Eat Grandma's Rosa Walton and producer David Wrench at Signature Brew to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the band's third album ‘Two Ribbons'. Taking us back to the album's very beginnings, Rosa and David chart each song's development, from early bedroom demos complete with mumble melodies and simple energy building tricks, to lyrics finished on the day of recording and adding surprising instruments that bring that extra glitter to their music. Discussing the way in which the band's creative process has changed in parallel with their different life experiences, the pair share their thoughts on wanting to take on separate subjects and their methods of unifying them into a singular sonic world. Listen to find out how to approach a breakup song before you've broken up, why sometimes you don't need to worry about microphones and how many chillies were unknowingly consumed in the making of this album. Unfortunately, we had a few technical difficulties with the recording and so the sound quality isn't up to our usual standard, but we hope you enjoy this deep dive into the album nonetheless. We talk about the writing economy, grad school for poetry, canceling yourself, how Autumn almost won the Passage Prize for right-wing fiction, how to stay free inside the institutions, how Autumn won Steff's heart with a meme about Hitler, how to think about success as a writer today, whether Curtis Yarvin's poetry is good, and Steff's call for suitors (DMs open).Steff✦ Steff on Twitter✦ Steff's websiteAutumn Christian✦ Teach Robots Love✦ Autumn on Twitter✦ Autumn's novelsOther Life✦ Subscribe to the coolest newsletter in the world OtherLife.co✦ Get a free Urbit planet at imperceptible.computer✦ We're building a new country at imperceptible.countryIndieThinkers.org✦ If you're working on independent intellectual work, join the next cohort of IndieThinkers.org
Transgressive Devotion is one of the best theology books I have read in years. I was thrilled to connect with Natalie and get her on the podcast. My list of questions was ginormous… then we got on zoom and all sorts of nerdy joy broke loose. We got to about 1/3 of topics, but had… Read more about Natalie Wigg-Stevenson: From Transgressive Devotion to Snuggle Puppy
Arlo Parks - "Softly," a 2022 single on Transgressive. This week's Song of the Day were selected by KEXP DJ Kevin Cole, host of Drive Time, in honor of International Women's Month. Re-listen to our kick-off day of programming, and explore articles and live sessions from some of our favorite female artists here. Last year, Arlo Parks - the musical nom de plume of Anais Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho - released her highly anticipated debut record Collapsed in Sunbeams. The intimate, compassionate lyricism combined with earworm pop musicality made the album an instant classic that was a KEXP favorite of 2021. Parks recently returned with the single “Softly,” which while bubbly and upbeat in tone, is, in reality, a heartbreaking story of a relationship on the verge of cessation. “‘Softly' is a song about yearning, about how fragile you feel in the dying days of a relationship when you're still desperately in love,” the Grammy-nominated singer - who's up for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album - explained in a statement. “The song is about how it feels to brace yourself before the blow of a break up and reminisce about the days where it all felt luminous.” The song was released alongside a video by Zhang and Knight that sees a cityscape disintegrate behind Parks. The directorial duo had this to say about the video: “For us ‘Softly' explored the idea of wanting something that was once perfect to end in a gentle way, and we wanted to express this using the world surrounding Arlo. We were instinctively drawn to the warm toned, hazy nostalgia of the 1960s, as we loved the idea of something universally romantic being slowly stripped away throughout the film. We based the colors of the bricks, trims and doors on mid-century painting in order to bake this romanticism into everything. The production itself was a huge challenge, as everything was captured in-camera with each piece of the set built on wheels operated by several production crew. However, we knew it was all worth it when we saw the skyscrapers dancing around Arlo for the first time.” Arlo Parks will be in Seattle on Wednesday, March 23rd to play the Paramount supporting Clairo. The 64th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 3rd. Watch the video for “Softly” at the link below.
