Tynesha Stewart was exceptionally bright and beautiful. She studied civil engineering at Texas A&M University. But a few years earlier, when she was still in high school, Tynesha met Timothy Wayne Shepherd. Timothy was 25, but that didn't stop him from pursuing Tynesha romantically. Their relationship soon turned abusive.  Then Kristin tells us about a case of racial profiling that's so scummy it's almost hard to believe. (But believe it, sister.) On September 4, 1992, an elderly white woman was attacked in her bed. She later told police that her attacker had been a black male. With little to go on, police decided to question every black male in Oneonta, New York. (And a few black women, because… why not?) The administration of SUNY at Oneonta aided the investigation by providing the names and addresses of all their black male students.  And now for a note about our process. Before The World Ended, I took a course on the economic life of women which demonstrated to me that, historically, marriage has been an economic booster for all parties involved but especially for women (many reasons for this but consider the system of primogeniture as well as the cultural and economic consequences of patriarchy and their adverse effects on the economic lives of women). Curious to discover how this economic booster functioned contemporarily for black women in the United States, my research and final paper led me to one Ralph Richard Banks—a professor at Stanford Law School and the author of a rather controversial (for that time, and perhaps even for our current times) book on the African American marriage decline. "Is Marriage For White People?: How the African American Marriage Decline Affects Everyone" is set among a broader trend of marriage decline overall in the United States, but acutely focuses on how this decline impacts the black community and African American women in particularly. Ralph Richard Banks is the author of "Is Marriage For White People?How The African American Marriage Decline Affects Everyone". He was born and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. Rick teaches courses in race, gender and equality at Stanford University in California. He has been married since 1997 with three sons. During our conversation talks and shares about various aspects of the book including why he wrote the book, how long the book took to write, the current marriage situation for African American women and men, why African American marriages are failing, his encouraging African American to look for marriage partners outside of their race, the future of African American marriage and his message for Black men.
