How I Grew and Continue to Grow the Aesthetic Practice I Love
In this episode, I interview Dr. Robert Rhodes who was a fellow of mine from June 2020 to June 2021. He is a native of Oklahoma City and currently working at W Facial Aesthetics. Dr. Rhodes is exclusively dedicated to reconstructive and cosmetic procedures of the face and neck. With being almost two years out from fellowship, him and I discuss the importance of communication and building relationships. I always say to younger surgeons in the field: "work on being a good doctor and surgeon, and the cosmetic stuff will come."Dr. Rhodes brought up a good point during our conversation about mentorship, and that is,"to look for something you can either bring to the practice or look at yourself as the newer person and facilitate with the culture."As always, thank you for taking the time to listen. If you would like to learn more about his background, click the link: https://wfacialaesthetics.com/doctor-rhodes-oklahomacity-ok/
Robert Rhodes is the biggest ray of sunshine ever! Strap yourself in for a super conversation with someone who finds every bit of joy in life and doesn't waste a second. Robert is an actor (and dog groomer extraordinaire!) and a campaigner supporting both the Changing Faces and Face Equality International charities. Robert opens up about his experiences as a child growing up in a world where he had a facial difference yet didn't see it until it was pointed out to him! He talks candidly about the negative representation on screen and the trend of almost all villains having either a scar, a burn scar or some level of facial difference, which sadly and shockingly became synonymous with evil and villainy. When Robert was little, the film The Lion King had a profound impact on him as it appeared to reinforce to the world that ‘scars were evil' (the character of Scar). Bond villain after Bond villain had facial disfigurements and for Robert he couldn't understand why heroes didn't have scars! They fight as much as the villains – too right!Robert generously shares with me his thoughts on how we can help educate people, how to talk to and in particular, how to talk to children about facial differences. Robert finds the joy in life and is super in tune with when he needs to own his boundaries, take in some nature and take a self care day! Robert has the most supportive family and friends and growing up he was instilled with a sense confidence and overwhelming positivity which really shines through! You are going to feel lifted, loved and a little bit wiser after this chat! Thanks so much for your time Robert you busy bee! Kip Knott is the author of four collections of poetry, the most recent being Afraid of Heaven. His first one-act play, The Irish-Hunky Shuffle, was produced in 2005 by the Irish Theatre Project in Columbus, Ohio. Cast Wife - Christy DonahueHusband 1 - Frank J. SchiavoneHusband 2 - Robert RhodesABOUT RINGTONES:Ringtones was inspired by a conversation with my son, who was trying to brainstorm ideas for a one-act play to be performed at his high school. My son had the nugget of an idea for a play about a man who loses his wedding ring at a bar while celebrating his anniversary with his wife, but he couldn’t think where to take the idea from there. Consequently, my son left that idea behind and went on to write a different play about a husband and wife who meet in Purgatory. The idea about the ring, however, stayed with me. I couldn’t stop thinking about the symbolic power that we ascribe to a wedding ring, and so I decided to push the idea of that power to an absurd level by making the power real rather than merely symbolic. As I began to draft what eventually became Ringtones, I wrote from the husband’s perspective, which just didn’t feel right. It was only when I turned the situation around and wrote from the wife’s perspective that everything began to click. As a result, the wife’s final gesture at the end of the play came very naturally. In the end, I feel that the play was something that I needed to write in order to express my frustration with the current social climate in America.

There is a woman in Florida who was sent to jail for not testifying against her attacked. Her attacker was her husband. She defied a court order when she didn't show up at his trial. Advocates say she was scared, and that it happens all the time that a victim doesn't face her abuser in court. They say most judges understand and don't revictimize the victim by punishing her. Some say a court order is a court order, and if witnesses don't appear in court, criminials get off. That's just the way it is. So who's right? Jeanne Gold, attorney, journalist, women's advocate and CEO of SafeHouse in Florida joins Robert Rhodes, Seattle attorney and veteran of numerous trials and intimate partner violence cases, join us to discuss the issue of REVICTIMIZING THE VICTIM: WHEN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SUFFERRERS GET HIT AGAIN BY THE LAW.

We're revisiting our 2012 interview with Robert Rhodes. In 1995, Robert Rhodes and his family sold most of their possessions ans went to live on the Minnesota prairie in religious seclusion. Rhodes had gone to live among the Hutterites, a 500 year old religious movement centered on communal ownership of property, radical pacifism, and an intense fervor for the Gospel. By 2002, Rhodes and his family had left the Hutterites. He chronicles his six years there in the book Nightwatch: An Inquiry into Solitude. Also on the broadcast, our producer-at-large Natasha Alford reflects on the shooting in Charleston, and a summer of violence. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
