Send us a textRey Roldan stops by the podcast to talk about being Britney's Publicist, Interviewing Kurt Cobain, an interesting encounter with Bono, Fandom, and so much more.********Rey has seen a lot… and I mean A LOT. Twenty-six plus years as a publicist (since 1995) and a few years before that as a nationally published entertainment journalist, he's been around. Backstage, on the tour bus, in the hotel rooms, behind closed doors, in the conference room… he's witnessed almost all… but there's undoubtedly more that he hasn't seen. But it hasn't shocked him. In fact, it's intrigued him… challenged him… and at times, offered myriad choices of how to react and how to process. And that's the thing… nothing shocks him. Starting his journey into the lion's den that is the music industry, he was a journalist for a number of newspapers, magazines, and regionals across the country (and one or two overseas). He's interviewed Kurt Cobain, U2, Joey Ramone, Sinead O'Connor, Bjork, Polly Jean Harvey… oh, and Vanilla Ice… While journalism was his passion, it didn't quite pay the bills, especially in Boston. So he moved to NYC and jumped into Publicity. IRS Records, Mammoth Records, Grass Records, Jive/Silvertone/Zomba, KSA Publicity/Press Here, Island Def Jam… He worked with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Duran Duran, Sting, Brooks & Dunn, O Brother Where Are Thou?, Juliana Hatfield, Diana Ross, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Dresden Dolls, Charlotte Church, among hundreds of others. He did the label (indie and major) and indie PR thing but he was burnt out on doing publicity like a pre-defined template that labels determined, so he left the corporate world to start his own shingle with a focus on building profiles and strategies that weren't constrained by hard, constrained blueprints. In 2004, Reybee Inc. was born. Instead of sticking to templates, he and his team of professionals craft unique strategies to build solid foundations and build up from there, creating campaigns that focus on constructing artist careers that go beyond. His campaigns go forward and sideways, and rarely backwards (unless, of course, we're talking retrospectives, which, in that case, they go backwards too).Nearly two decades later, it's still going strong… in fact, it keeps growing… and growing… and growing. My guest today is a true force of nature. From the moment she burst onto the scene as a child prodigy with that voice, she became one of the most famous classical singers in the world, performing for presidents, popes, and royalty. It is of course, Charlotte Church. Her early career was a whirlwind - global fame, relentless travel, and a life that few could truly understand. We talk about what that was really like behind the scenes, the highs and the inevitable challenges of growing up in the spotlight, and how travel became both an escape and a source of inspiration for her.But Charlotte's journey didn't stop there. These days, she's also the founder of The Dreaming, a magical retreat space in rural Wales dedicated to healing, creativity, and connection. Throughout the year, The Dreaming hosts a range of immersive retreats - some focused on families, others on music and self-discovery, including Charlotte's own deeply personal Song of the Soul retreat. It even celebrates ancient traditions with gatherings around the folkloric calendar, from the Spring Equinox to Halloween.Charlotte's travel diaries take us from the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the wild beauty of Dominica, the savannahs of Kenya, and, of course, the rolling green hills of Wales, her home. Her outlook on life is truly unique - spiritual, alternative, and deeply connected to nature and the world around her. So, this is a conversation you won't want to miss. Let's get started - here's Charlotte. Ian McMillan's guests are George Szirtes, Cecilia Knapp, Lisa Knapp, Gerry Diver and Rishi Dastidar. The beauty of a swimming pool seen from the air, banks that fly up and out of small towns never to return, the poetry of single objects seen from a train window, and the miniature brilliance of poetry pamphlets - all in this week's edition of The Verb. It can be a shock when banks leave our high streets - poet George Szirtes presents a brand new commission for The Verb inspired by that experience, and reads work from his 2004 collection 'Reel' which won the TS Eliot Prize. George has just been awarded the 'King's Gold Medal' for excellence in poetry.Cecilia Knapp finds surprising images for memories of being a teenager in new poetry on this week's show. Cecilia's first collection is 'Peach Pig' - she has published a novel called 'Little Boxes', and is Poet-in-Residence for London's City Bridge Foundation. We look out of train windows, in a new song by Lisa Knapp and Gerry Diver ( from a new album called 'Hinterland'). Gerry has arranged music for films – and in his ground-breaking album 'The Speech Project' he created scores for the remarkable speakers including Christy Moore, the boxer Barry McGuigan and the singer Charlotte Church. Lisa Knapp has been nominated for the BBC folk awards multiple times - her recent performances on the 'Hack Poets Guild' album 'Blackletter Garland' were described as 'expert' and 'ethereal'. Gerry, Lisa and their daughter Bonnie Diver perform live in the studio.Rishi Dastidar shares the joy of small collections - as he celebrates poetry pamphlets with Ian - exploring their appeal and their potential. Rishi is a poet, critic and copywriter. His latest collection is 'Neptune's Projects' described by one reviewer as 'add(ing) wit, postmodern panache and mythic irony to the tradition of the open sea'

Charlotte Church talking about her varied career and her new retreat in Wales ‘The Dreaming'…with TRE's Hannah Murray
Reconnecting with Nature: Charlotte's Biophilic Retreat Offers Healing and WonderIn a secluded corner of the Welsh countryside, internationally renowned singer-songwriter Charlotte has created a sanctuary that blends the power of nature, music, and design. The Dreaming, her newly opened retreat centre, is a testament to her lifelong passion for the restorative qualities of the natural world.Nestled in the Elan Valley, surrounded by cascading waterfalls and ancient forests, The Dreaming is a place where visitors are invited to shed the trappings of modern life and immerse themselves in the rhythms of the land.Charlotte's journey to this point has been shaped by a growing awareness of the disconnect between humans and nature, a disconnect she believes is at the root of many of society's ills. "Nature keeps us in balance," she explains. "When we separate ourselves from it, we become way out of balance in every way possible."At The Dreaming, Charlotte has created a space that aims to rekindle that essential connection. Through a blend of biophilic design, holistic practices, and the power of music, she hopes to guide visitors on a transformative journey of self-discovery and healing."It's about an opening," Charlotte says of the experiences people have at the retreat. "Almost everybody that comes here, experiences some form of opening, whatever the walls that we build around ourselves and our hearts, they just start to loosen a little bit."The Dreaming's architectural design is a testament to this philosophy. Crafted with natural materials and a keen eye for integrating the outdoors, the spaces are imbued with a sense of warmth and wonder. From the cozy "Cwtch" room, with its plush sofa and rustic charm, to the mystical "Mystic" suite, with its vibrant saris and ancient-inspired decor, each space is designed to evoke a different facet of the natural world. But it's not just the environment that captivates. The Dreaming's programs, led by Charlotte and a team of skilled practitioners, are designed to immerse visitors in the rhythms of nature. Dawn chanting, dark sky immersions, and communal music-making are just a few of the offerings that aim to reconnect people with their innate sense of wonder and creativity."I think that the land does the majority of the work," Charlotte says. "I feel like when people leave, they leave with a sense of awe, wonder, the mysteries, the magic."For Charlotte, this magic is not limited to the confines of The Dreaming. She believes that the power of nature-based healing is accessible to everyone, no matter where they live. "You can go to a beach, you can go to a forest, you can go to a river, wherever you are most drawn."The Dreaming, then, is not just a retreat centre, but a model for a new way of living in harmony with the natural world. By tapping into the deep well of wisdom and healing that resides in the land, Charlotte hopes to inspire a broader cultural shift, one that recognizes the vital role of nature in our individual and collective well-being."I've watched people really connect with joy for the first time in years," Charlotte says. "Another thing that I try and instil when I'm here is that this it doesn't have to be in this place, and it doesn't have to be facilitated by very clever, very learned, very spiritual people - you can go and do this wherever you are, wherever you are."As the world grapples with the mounting challenges of climate change and social disconnection, The Dreaming stands as a beacon of hope, a place where the ancient wisdom of the land is honoured and the power of human creativity is unleashed. For those who venture here, the experience is nothing short of transformative – a reminder that the path to healing and wholeness lies not in the pursuit of material wealth or status, but in the simple act of reconnecting with the natural world that sustains us all.Have you got a copy of the Journal? #527 Happy Grammy Birthday - Richard has travelled to the home of gofasterstripe, Cardiff in Welsh Wales and his guest is singer and activist Charlotte Church. They chat about her extraordinary rise to fame and the whirlwind of travel and celebrities that came with it. How Frasier was disappointingly weird when she met him at the inauguration of George W Bush, how she sang a requiem at the wedding of Rupert Murdoch and how he didn't uphold his end of the deal, the unbelievable (and yet totally believable) creepy reaction of the tabloids as Charlotte turned sixteen, how she became political active and put her money where her mouth is and her optimistic hopes for the future. Plus Richard attempts to launch his own career as a child singing prodigy and the pair join in a haunting duet. About as haunting as what was going on in the next hotel room to him in London.See a live recording of RHLSTP - https://richardherring.com/rhlstpSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. The wellness industry is worth about $5 trillion worldwide and it feels like there's always something we should be spending money on to benefit our mind, body and soul. But the quest to feel our best can come at a cost that extends beyond the financial - it can impact our relationships too. Here to unpack the world of wellness, spirituality and radical healing with Anna is Charlotte Church (singer and founder of wellness and healing centre, The Dreaming) and Michele Knight (psychic, astrologer and Sunday-Times best-selling author). Together, they discuss a dilemma from a listener who is skeptical about his partner's belief in alternative therapies and the validity of the wellness industry as a whole. They also address a dilemma from someone who is concerned his partner is becoming overly dependent on her psychic. During the conversation, Charlotte and Michele explore the tension between helping people and monetisation, the dangers of spiritual and psychic practices when not conducted ethically, and whether it's possible to build a relationship with someone who fundamentally has different beliefs. — Have questions about sex? Divorce? Motherhood? Menopause? Mental health? With no topic off limits, Anna's here to prove that whatever you're going through, it's not just you.
