Over the course of the next number of short episodes we wilI take a look at another character that influenced the early development and growth of golf in Ireland. Anthony Babington was a native of Co. Derry, educated at Glenalmond in Perthshire and Trinity College Dublin. Babington was introduced to golf at Lisfannon in Donegal and Royal Portrush. He was a scratch player of some repute, competing extensively in the elite national amateur championships of the day. However, it was in the administration of the game that he really excelled, influencing golf at Trinity College, Dollymount, Portrush, Belfast and beyond. Through the medium of his recently uncovered memoirs and historical writings I'm pleased to introduce you to the long golfing life of A.B. Babington and the positive influence that he brought to bear throughout the island of Ireland. I hope you enjoy his recollections! Many thanks for tuning in. "The average tour professional does not know the rules of golf very well." Bryan Jones PGA Golf Professional and PGA Rules Official Black Oak Golf Club,  Flanders, New Jersey Bryan Jones personifies the highest ideals of the PGA. In addition to his role as a head golf professional, he devotes a significant amount of time teaching the rules of the game to others, and volunteering his time and expertise as a rules official at professional and amateur tournaments around the world. He is recognized as one of the most knowledgeable and experienced rules officials in the game. Bryan's list of golf industry awards and recognitions is lengthy and impressive, and includes the PGA's National Horton Smith Award, and induction into the New Jersey PGA's Hall of Fame. He currently serves as the Honorary Chair of the PGA's Rules Committee. (A more complete overview of Bryan's career is posted below.) Show Highlights Our conversation covers a lot of territory involving all aspects of Bryan's long career as a PGA golf professional, including: [caption id="attachment_3175" align="alignright" width="300"] Bryan with Shane Lowry on the 17th hole during the second round of the 148th Open Championship held on the Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush Golf Club in 2019.[/caption] What happened to his career plan to become a veterinarian...which is unrelated to his owning two feral cats Why he believes the abundance of online instruction actually increases "in person" golf instruction How you become a golf rules official, and who gets the best tournament assignments The most confusing rules in golf, and the new rules for 2023 How a twist of fate caused Dustin Johnson to lose the PGA Championship at Whistling Straights The most exciting moments in officiating tour events His near-death experience at the 2023 Masters Tournament Notable Quotes On watching professional golf from inside the ropes: “I love watching them play from up close. The shots they can hit and they things they can do are amazing. It's the highest level of the game." On the life of a tour professional: "It's a nice life, particularly if you're in the top 50, have the best sponsorships, and get to fly private, rather than lugging your equipment around on commercial flights." On his opinion of golf fans in America: “The Ryder Cup at Bethpage in 2025 should be an experience... I hope that it's a good one." On the swing faults he sees most often in the average golfer: "The problem I see in many golfers is alignment. If they're right handed, they tend to aim too far right at setup, and unless the clubface is properly aligned, the ball is not going to land where they want it to go. Male golfers also tend to power through the ball with their upper body." On the LIV Tour: “Golf is a business, and players should take the money if they believe it's a good thing for them. But once they've left the PGA Tour, they should not have an avenue to come back in if it doesn't work out." On controversial rulings: "I'll call in another official for a second opinion, even if I know that I'm right."...

Jumped on a train from Belfast to Portrush, Northern Ireland. Portrush is a seaside resort town and I was there during the off-season. I kinda equate it with Jersey Shore or Coney Island. Since it was the off-season there was no wait to see anything, downside is there wasn't really much going on to go see. This video is a quick highlight of the thing I saw and did in Belfast. Portrush is home to the Royal Portrush Golf Club, the only golf club outside Great Britain which has hosted The Open Championship in 1951 and 2019. SUBSCRIBE to watch more videos like this one! Episode 15 of the Green Room Golf Course Podcast crosses the Irish Sea a month ahead of schedule to chat with Graeme Beatt, who is preparing for the biggest four days of his career.   Following the conclusion of the US Open last weekend, the next and final major on the golfing schedule is the Open Championship, taking place this year at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.   This will mark the first time the Open has been held outside of England or Scotland since 1951, when Royal Portrush again hosted the event. Back then it was the flamboyant Max Faulkner who lifted the Claret Jug, the last Englishman to do so until Tony Jacklin in 1969.   There are some amazing stories waiting to be written this time out. Rory McIlroy shot 61 at the club aged just 16, while hometown hero Graeme McDowell will be playing on a course prepared by his brother and greenkeeper, Gary, who's a part of the Royal Portrush team. So there's tons to look forward to.   For Graeme Beatt, it's going to be the first major challenge of his career. The 39-year-old was born and raised in St Andrews and has been greenkeeping since 1995, when he spent the summer working at Scotscraig. His career has taken him to Kingsbarns, Royal Melbourne, Castle Dargan and County Sligo, before joining Royal Portrush as course manager in 2015, just a few months before the club was announced as the host of the 2019 Open. Throughout preparations for the event, Graeme has kept an incredible blog, that details everything the team has undertaken to get the Dunluce in championship condition for the Open. Head to the BIGGA website to find out more about the BIGGA Awards ahead of the closing day on 31 October 2019.  The Green Room Golf Course Podcast is produced by Karl Hansell on behalf of the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association. Golf has put Portrush on the map once again. The seaside town in Northern Ireland is home to two stars of the sport, Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke. Their names are proudly displayed on the 'Welcome to Portrush' road signs. Along with fellow Northern Ireland player, Rory McIlroy, the two men have reinvigorated the local sports scene, so much so that the Irish Open golf tournament is coming to the Royal Portrush Golf Club at the end of June 2012. For four days the town will turn into a golf lover's paradise. Most of the hotels are booked out and people are renting out their houses. The Irish Open was last held at Royal Portrush in 1947 when the town was a popular holiday resort. But the advent of package holidays and affordable foreign travel eventually lead to a slow-down in the local tourism trade. For this Lives in a Landscape Alan Dein is in Portrush as it carries out a major spring-clean. Derelict buildings, described as 'eyesores', are one legacy of the recent property boom and bust. Now an injection of cash from the government is paying for their demolition and many of the town's buildings are being repainted. Some in Portrush fear this will be a temporary patch-up job and that once the big sporting event ends, and the world's TV cameras depart, things will return to normal. Others are hoping the Irish Open will breathe new life into Portrush. Alan meets residents as they prepare for the eyes of the world to fall on their town. Producer: Claire Burgoyne.
