Sam & Tom sit down for Part II of their deep dive into the Tiger Slam. 25 years on from the second leg of Tiger's historic run — and his fourth major victory overall — we revisit the 129th Open Championship at St Andrews, where he clinched the Claret Jug by a record-equalling eight shots. The parallels with the current Champion Golfer of the Year, Scottie Scheffler, are hard to ignore — both with dominant stretches just over 1,000 days apart. This episode has it all: a streaker on the fairway, David Duval taking four swipes in the Road Hole bunker, and the end of a 63-hole bogey-free streak from Tiger. Oh, and in case you'd forgotten — he famously avoided all 112 bunkers across the four days. We'll return in August with Part III, charting the next chapter: Tiger's win at the PGA Championship. For more on the Tiger Slam, we highly recommend Kevin Cook's book, which captures the era in microscopic detail. Scottie Scheffler continued his historic run by winning the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, cruising to a four-shot victory at 17-under to secure his fourth major title in just over three years — matching Tiger Woods’ early career pace. His final-round 68 cemented a dominant performance, extending his streak to 11 straight top-10s and further solidifying his grip on World No. 1. The win also reshaped the Ryder Cup picture: Rory McIlroy remains the lone automatic qualifier for Europe, but Shane Lowry, Tyrrell Hatton, and Robert MacIntyre are closing in, while Sepp Straka’s recent surge adds intrigue. For Team USA, Keegan Bradley sits 10th and could become the first playing captain since 1963, thanks to a new rule allowing on-course advice from vice-captains. Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy impressed with late Open charges, and with the Olympics and FedEx Cup playoffs looming, the summer golf calendar is just heating upSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In This Episode of Next on the Tee: I've got three incredible friends back on the show this week—each with a powerful story and a lasting impact on the game of golf. In Part 1, 1991 Open Champion Ian Baker-Finch, a man whose excellence on the course has often been overshadowed by the wrong narrative. This time, we set the record straight. We go back to his incredible performance at Royal Birkdale, where he played brilliant golf over all four days to capture the Claret Jug. Ian also reflects on his many wins around the world, including the 1983 New Zealand Open (his first professional event) and top finishes at The Players and The Masters following his Open Championship. Between 1983 and 1994, Ian was one of the top players on the planet—winning 17 times across the PGA, European, Japanese, and Australasian Tours. In addition to his playing career, we celebrate his nearly 30 years as one of golf's most respected broadcasters. He also gives us a preview of his upcoming book collaboration title, To Hell & Back, a docu-drama style memoir due out in August. Next, I'm joined by Paul Stankowski, one of my all-time favorite guests, now making his 14th appearance on the show. Paul's game is in top form coming off back-to-back Top 10 finishes at the U.S. Senior Open and Dick's Sporting Goods Open. We talk about those performances, the joy of having his son Josh on the bag, and his excitement for the upcoming Senior Open Championship at Sunningdale. Off the course, Paul is doing meaningful work with Direction 61:3, a nonprofit that supports young adults aging out of foster care. When these kids turn 18 and cycle out of foster care, the state gives them $500, but if they don't have someplace to go, now they're homeless. Paul is raising money through his birdie campaign on Tour—check out Direction613.org and Paul's Instagram page to learn more and support the cause. Be sure to come back for Part 2 featuring my conversation with the amazing Michael Whelan. His story is going to hit you in the heart...

With the dust settling on Scottie Scheffler's emphatic win at Royal Portrush, Michael, James and Lewis reflect on an epic week in Northern Ireland. What is the new ‘Champion Golfer of the Year's' major ceiling? Could he challenge Tiger's haul? Maybe even Jack's? Or is that mental? Also, what about Rory? How many more chances will he have to win the Claret Jug on home soil? Is the Dunluce Links now permanently on the Open rota? And is Chris Gotterup a US Ryder Cup team lock? An immediate, Sunday evening review of an Open Championship where Scottie Scheffler dominated, adding the Claret Jug to his collection and possibly enjoying it for a few minutes before moving on to other things. Andrew and Iain meet for the last time in the noisy media centre to discuss things and hear the thoughts of both Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. SK gives his notes on Haotong Li after watching him post a two-under 69 on Saturday to join Scottie in the final group, while exploring the possibility that two current Ryder Cup outsiders - Matt Fitzpatrick and Chris Gotterup - could find their way onto their respective teams with a top-five finish. Saturday night at The Open Championship: Andrew and Iain once again convene in the media centre to discuss the third round, wondering if anybody can stop Scottie Scheffler from winning his first Claret Jug and his fourth major, but more than that, they discuss whether he is actually exciting to watch or if his mastery of the game is actually quite dull. They ponder both that and the hero worship for Rory McIlroy while also hearing from Eddie out in Germany again, who managed to salvage his third round at the Hotel Planner Tour event with a storming finish before enjoying another large steak. We've reached the halfway point of our run down of the best golf holes on The Open rota courses. Tom Irwin's been on a journey this year. He's somehow managed to blag his way round most of the courses on The Open rota. In honour of the journey, he runs down his favourite holes from the 10 courses that have regularly hosted the Claret Jug. It's an eclectic – so the 1st hole on Tom's list must also be the 1st hole at one of the venues – and so on. It's a meaty task so this week, Tom and host Steve Carroll run through his front nine. We'll tackle the homeward stretch next time. What do you make of his selections? What mistakes has he made and what did he miss?
Sam & Tom sit down in the members' bar at Royal Lytham & St Anne's Golf Club to meet with Dr Steven Reid, lifelong member at Lytham and author of Bobby's Open, charting the tale of how Bobby Jones came to win his first Claret Jug. He would go on to defend it successfully in 1927, as well as winning at Royal Liverpool in 1930 on his way to completing the 'impregnable quadrilateral'. Steven's book - foreworded by Jack Nicklaus - is a captivating read and brings to life in viivd detail the struggles Jones went through, not only with his health but his temper and his putting as he clawed his way out of the 'lean years' into 7 (or perhaps 8) 'fat years', where he was unstoppable.
