From the eerie swamps to the ghostly streets of New Orleans, the Bayou State is filled with dark legends and spectral encounters. Join us as we explore haunted plantations, mysterious mansions, and the lingering spirits of voodoo priestesses in this spine-tingling journey through Louisiana's most haunted places. Featured Haunted Locations: The Myrtles Plantation Address: 7747 US-61, St. Francisville, LA 70775 This historic plantation is notorious for its ghostly history, including the spirit of Chloe, an enslaved woman who poisoned the owner's family, as well as a host of other spirits, from ghostly children to former owners. LaLaurie Mansion Address: 1140 Royal St, New Orleans, LA 70116 The LaLaurie Mansion is infamous for the horrific acts of Madame Delphine LaLaurie, whose cruel treatment of enslaved people resulted in one of the city's most notorious hauntings. Ghostly cries and shadowy figures haunt the mansion to this day. St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 Address: 425 Basin St, New Orleans, LA 70112 The oldest cemetery in New Orleans, home to the grave of Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen, whose spirit still roams the grounds. Visitors report ghostly figures and eerie whispers among the above-ground tombs. The Old Absinthe House Address: 240 Bourbon St, New Orleans, LA 70112 A favorite haunt of pirate Jean Lafitte, this historic bar is known for ghostly patrons and moving objects, with patrons often encountering eerie happenings late at night. Manchac Swamp Address: Manchac Swamp, LA (Boat tours available from various operators) Known as the "Haunted Swamp," this eerie area is said to be haunted by the ghost of Julia Brown, a voodoo priestess, whose curse allegedly caused a devastating hurricane in 1915. Strange voices and ghostly figures are often seen in the misty waters. Gardette-LePretre Mansion Address: 716 Dauphine St, New Orleans, LA 70116 Also known as the Sultan's Palace, this mansion is haunted by the ghost of a mysterious sultan who was brutally murdered along with his entourage. Ghostly music and shadowy figures are still seen within its walls. Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar Address: 941 Bourbon St, New Orleans, LA 70116 One of the oldest buildings in the French Quarter, believed to have been used by pirate Jean Lafitte for smuggling operations. Patrons report seeing his ghost in the dimly lit bar, and strange occurrences abound. The Andrew Jackson Hotel Address: 919 Royal St, New Orleans, LA 70116 Built on the site of a former boarding school that burned down, killing five children, this hotel is haunted by their playful spirits. Guests report hearing their laughter and feeling their playful pranks. The Bourbon Orleans Hotel Address: 717 Orleans St, New Orleans, LA 70116 This luxurious hotel was once a convent and orphanage, and the spirits of nuns and children still linger. 585. Part 2 of our conversation with Kaitlyn Joshua. Kaitlyn was a victim of Louisiana's abortion ban. She was excited to get pregnant, but her OBGYN wouldn't see her until she had been pregnant 12 weeks. During those early weeks of pregnancy, Joshua experienced symptoms she hadn't dealt with in her first pregnancy: mild cramping and spotting. Without access to a doctor, though, Joshua felt like she had nowhere to go for answers. She eventually visited ERs at Woman's Hospital in Baton Rouge and to Baton Rough General. Both hospitals sent her home in spite of heavy bleeding. Now Kaitlyn is an advocate for women's right to choose and to get medical care. Now available: Liberty in Louisiana: A Comedy. This week is the Open Championship, which means it's the last golf major of the PGA season. It also marks the 20th anniversary of Ben Curtis winning the Open Championship as a 300-to-1 long shot. When Ben Curtis hoisted the Claret Jug, it was the first time he had ever played in a major and it was his first-ever tournament at a links-style course. He also was a late add to the field and his wife barely made it over to England since she didn't have a passport. This was an interesting episode we did a couple of years ago but wanted to replay it since this is the week of The Open Championship.  Lastly, I must admit I'm biased when it comes to Ben Curtis since he is a fellow Kent State Golden Flash alum. He is also doing a lot of great things in our area for kids in need. I highly recommend checking out his website at bencurtisfoundation.org.    SHOW NOTES: Ben Curtis won the 2003 Open Championship at Royal St. George's as a rookie in only his 16th start on the PGA Tour. He became the first golfer in 90 years to win a major championship on his first try. He would go on to win a total of four PGA events. Curtis also was the runnerup at the 2012 PLAYERS Championship and a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup Championship Team. Prior to his professional career, he was formerly the world's number one ranked amateur after winning three Ohio Amateur titles, earning NCAA All-American honors three times at Kent State University, and reaching the semifinals of the 1999 of prestigious U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. He retired from professional golf in 2017.  He now leads the Ben Curtis Golf Academy, as well as the Ben Curtis Family Foundation which seeks to alleviate childhood hunger in Northeast Ohio. In today's episode, we discuss: Winning The Open Championship as a rookie Getting married and playing a PGA event on the same day The mental approach to golf Starting a foundation to help alleviate child hunger … and so much more!!!   Resources, Books, and Links  Golf Academy Website: BenCurtisGolfAcademy.com Foundation Website:   BenCurtisFoundation.org Foundation Facebook:  Facebook.com/BenCurtisFoundation/ Instagram: @BenCurtisFamilyFoundation Articles of Interest . . . Romero said when Perot left Louisiana with her Irish husband, John Donnelly, and moved to New York, she taught her children, including Romero's grandmother, that they were French and Irish. Romero made her first visit to this area in 2021 to find family and truth. “Where did Lola's family come from? What was she hiding, and why? It was time to find Lola, and myself. 507. Part 1 of our conversation with Andrew Wegmann. Andrew believes that the introduction of concepts of whiteness, purity of blood and legitimacy of kin under the Spanish caused a transformation within the New Orleans coloured community. As generations of mixed-race men and women emerged from interracial families established during the late French Period, Spanish social and legal practices permeated the New Orleans cultural landscape. Suddenly, new ideas of racial science, mixture and definition appeared in law, gradually affecting social intercourse. The ambiguous awareness of mulâtres and nègres under the French gave way to a regimented taxonomy of ‘races' and ‘hybrids' developed over more than a century in Latin America and the Caribbean and manifested in the social and racial identities of the New Orleans mixed-race community. Andrew N. Wegmann is the T. Harry Williams Fellow in History at Louisiana State University. This is a replay of one of our most popular episodes. See the original show notes and links below... This week is the Open Championship at historic Saint Andrews Golf Club. It is the last major of the PGA season. It also marks the 19th anniversary of Ben Curtis winning the Open Championship as a 300-to-1 long shot. When Ben Curtis hoisted the Claret Jug, it was the first time he had ever played in a major and it was his first-ever tournament at a links-style course. He also was a late add to the field and his wife barely made it over to England since she didn't have a passport. Anyway, this was an interesting episode that we did a couple of years ago but wanted to replay it since this is the week of The Open Championship. Lastly, I must admit I'm biased when it comes to Ben Curtis since he is a fellow Kent State Golden Flash alum. He is also doing a lot of great things in our area for kids in need. I highly recommend checking out his website at bencurtisfoundation.org.   ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES: Ben Curtis won the 2003 Open Championship at Royal St. George's as a rookie in only his 16th start on the PGA Tour. He became the first golfer in 90 years to win a major championship in his first try. He would go on to win a total of four PGA events. Curtis also was the runnerup at the 2012 PLAYERS Championship and a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup Championship Team. Prior to his professional career, he was formerly the world's number one ranked amateur after winning three Ohio Amateur titles, earning NCAA All-American honors three times at Kent State University, and reaching the semifinals of the 1999 of the prestigious U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. He retired from professional golf in 2017.  He now leads the Ben Curtis Golf Academy, as well as the Ben Curtis Family Foundation which seeks to alleviate childhood hunger in Northeast Ohio.
