This episode we discuss the setup for the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, with particular focus on the firm, fast conditions and how much water the course is losing each day through high wind and heat. We talk about how the greens are being monitored and adjusted with modern technology, and how the course presentation is being kept under control. We also look at how players may adapt their strategy, with many expected to leave driver out in favor of irons, mini drivers or three-woods. The discussion covers wedge bounce, firm fairways, bunkers, and how the course conditions create difficult equipment decisions for the field. We spend a lot of time on the holes that could shape the championship, especially 1, 10, 13, 14, 17 and 18. We talk about the challenge of the opening stretch, the reachable but dangerous par 5s, the narrow closing hole, and how wind direction could change the approach on several key holes. We then turn to likely scoring and possible outcomes, with the group largely agreeing that the winning score is more likely to be in the high single digits rather than very low. We also discuss which players may suit the test, including Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Reed, Matt Fitzpatrick, Harris English and others. Finally, we cover the “Tooting Beck” low-round prediction for British and Irish players, and close with a brief exchange about England's football match against Argentina. Send us Fan MailWelcome back to another episode of A Touch of Class. In this episode, we're doing something a little different because Keith Nolan joins me live from Royal Birkdale, where he's caddying for Darren Clarke during Open week. Instead of a career deep‑dive, this is a real‑time look at how the course is playing, how the setup is evolving, and what the players are facing as the 2026 Open Championship gets underway. Keith brings the same sharp eye that made him a two‑time Irish Amateur Champion, a Walker Cup player alongside Justin Rose, and one of East Tennessee State's greatest ever talents but today he's speaking as the man walking every yard of Birkdale with a bag on his shoulder.Across this preview we break down the live conditions: firmness, rough height, green speeds, wind direction, and how the course is changing hour by hour. Keith gives us the caddie's perspective, the shots that matter, the traps that punish, the holes that will decide the championship, and how Darren Clarke is preparing for the week. We talk contenders, dark horses, strategy, and the small details only someone inside the ropes can truly see. It's relaxed, honest, and full of the good stuff, exactly what an Open fanatic lives for.Topics CoveredLive Royal Birkdale course conditionsHow the setup is playing during Open weekWind patterns and scoring impactKey shots required to survive BirkdaleDarren Clarke's preparation and strategyWho's trending heading into the 2026 OpenFavourites, dark horses, and potential surprisesWhat makes The Open different from every other majorIf you're the kind of person who lives for Open week, the wind, the stories, the madness then this one will hit the spot. Andy and Brendan went LIVE on YouTube for this final major preview episode of 2026! Brendan is in high spirits after traveling across the pond to find a baked-out Royal Birkdale that he describes as "fiery, firm, and brown." The two get going on the course setup and the choices that players must make on a variety of holes throughout the round. This is a new-look Royal Birkdale following an extensive renovation ahead of this year's Open Championship, and reviews seem to be mixed on whether the course is better than it once was. Scottie Scheffler made some pointed comments about the course during his pre-tournament press conference, leading to a discussion about whether this venue is truly "forged by nature." Andy's 5 Guys to Monitor This Week highlights the two best players in the world, two hometown heroes looking for their first major, and a LIV defector who can lock up PGA Tour status for next year with a good showing. With a relatively wide-open field, it felt like a good time to re-rank the top five players in pro golf heading into the week, as well. Kevin Van Valkenburg joins in the fun to discuss Tuesday's press conferences getting deeply existential and shares some scuttlebutt from the grounds. To put a bow on this preview, Andy, Brendan, KVV, and PJ make their picks to win the Claret Jug and choose sides in a much-anticipated installment of Games Within a Game. We will return on Thursday afternoon following round one of the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale! Mercedes-Benz is proud to be an Official Patron of The Open Championship. The Open Championship is here! What a tournament, what a history. And today Nick and Mark preview The Open.Mark asks Nick about when he played in The Open Championship in 2008 and Greg Norman led at 54 holes, tied for the lead with 8 holes to play ...and he was retired and spending his time playing tennis !!As usual we have a look at the power rankings, and we start with a convo about Tommy Fleetwood - this is his home course, and Nick says there is nothing like local knowledge of a course, and Mark says he is the best player to not win a major, so it could be a good weekend for him.Nick notes that Min Woo's iron play is looking much better, and his short game is on point. Mark says this course suits Min Woo, and he is one of the best stinger players he's ever seen, and he deserves to be considered the leading Australian in the field.Mark talks about how this course has seen plenty of great putters win, seems to suit them. Nick isn't looking forward to seeing Tom Kim play, describing him as 'brutal' to watch (in reference to his pace).Scheffler is #5 in the power rankings, and Mark feels he knows why that is the case. Nick's 'concern' about Scottie this week is his putting.Rory #4 in the power rankings, Nick saw a funny piece of footage featuring Rory this week which we have a listen to. Matt Fitzpatrick...he is red hot, both Nick and Mark are huge fans and reckon he's set for a big weekend.Mark cannot understand why Morikawa is #2 in the power rankings for The Open, Nick can and explains why. Nick goes on to explain the strategy for playing this course. With the tournament finishing at a similar time to the World Cup Final, Nick tells Mark that there is a contingency to adjust tee times if England are in the final to avoid the situation of empty stands, or cheering from the stands as people keep an eye on the World Cup.And before the turn we discuss some of the fun, new markets Betr have on the tournament, there are some crackers if you want to whack 5 bucks on a couple. And what will our Talk Birdie Betr multi be? We kick it around before the turn, and decide after. We text Hummer live, and get the odds back in record time. The Smylie Show is on the road this week! Smylie Kaufman joins from the airport after a fun week in Tahoe, with Charlie Hulme on a quick trip to Ponte Vedra Beach. SK and CH begin the show recapping Chris Gotterup's breakthrough win at the Scottish Open, and whether he can complement his skill driving the ball with more complete performances like what we saw in North Berwick to take his game to the next level. After a near miss and a T2 in Scotland, Smylie and Charlie discuss a more relaxed looking Rory McIlroy, and where that positions him heading into a home game at Royal Portrush. Brandel Chamblee then joins Smylie to close the episode with a wide-ranging first look at the Open Championship, both previewing the 153rd edition and discussing whether some historic anchor sites like the Old Course can stand up to the increasing impact of technology on the game. Brandel closes with some analysis and predictions on who could emerge victorious at Portrush. It's time for the final men's major championship of 2025 as the 153rd Open Championship heads to Royal Portrush. To preview this week's tournament, Andy Johnson is first joined by Fried Egg Golf producer PJ Clark to run through the top storylines to watch. They discuss the course setup at Royal Portrush, the 2025 Player of the Year race between Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa's recent struggles, and more. Andy then chats with 2024 Open Championship runner-up Billy Horschel (42:31) about his thoughts on the field at Portrush and his first-hand experience playing in The Open. The two also touch on Billy's rehab as he works to return to play after hip surgery, his thoughts on television coverage of the PGA Tour, and the importance of continuity in a tour pro's life.
This Summer Friday episode covers a wide range of topics, starting with Pete Crow-Armstrong and ending with some promo for next week's Open Championship live show (4 pm ET on 7/15!). Andy and Brendan share some stories of 1990s Tour pros thanks to recent orders from the Fried Egg Golf Pro Shop and the Pro Set trading cards included in their packages. Andy reads off the stats and information from Mark Brooks's 1990 season, leading right into some unsubstantiated rumors about the PGA Champions dinner. Brendan adds LIV Valderrama to the Schedule of the Week and highlights Patrick Reed and Sergio Garcia as two players to watch as we close in on Ryder Cup selections. Speaking of Valderrama, Brendan then dives into a flashback from the 2002 Volvo Masters on the European Tour. This event was won by both Colin Motgomerie and Bernhard Langer in a shared victory, leading to some interesting quotes and discoveries looking back 23 years later. The episode wraps with some Golf Advice about Member-Guest season and some caddie-etiquette. Be sure to tune in to next week's Open Championship Preview as we go LIVE on the Fried Egg Golf YouTube at 4 pm ET.
