Over the course of the next number of short episodes we wilI take a look at another character that influenced the early development and growth of golf in Ireland. Anthony Babington was a native of Co. Derry, educated at Glenalmond in Perthshire and Trinity College Dublin. Babington was introduced to golf at Lisfannon in Donegal and Royal Portrush. He was a scratch player of some repute, competing extensively in the elite national amateur championships of the day. However, it was in the administration of the game that he really excelled, influencing golf at Trinity College, Dollymount, Portrush, Belfast and beyond. Through the medium of his recently uncovered memoirs and historical writings I'm pleased to introduce you to the long golfing life of A.B. Babington and the positive influence that he brought to bear throughout the island of Ireland. I hope you enjoy his recollections! Many thanks for tuning in. This week we are in for a special treat as we "hop across the pond" and land in Dundee, Scotland to connect with innovative songwriter, composer and producer Theo Bleak, whose music resonates with a profound sense of place and reflection, somehow achieving a sound that is equally familiar and unfamiliar, nostalgic and yet completely new. With each note, she weaves a sonic tapestry that captures the beauty and complexity of the world around her, drawing listeners into a journey through time, nature, and emotion. Her music is deeply influenced by the landscapes of Perthshire and Angus, where she finds inspiration during reflective walks through the countryside. Theo Bleak's work is more than just music; it is an exploration of the human experience through the lens of nature's ever-changing beauty. With each piece, she offers a moment of introspection, a chance to reconnect with the world and with oneself. Her music is a journey—a walk through the countryside of the mind and heart, where every step brings a new revelation.Bleak's 2023 EP Pain made the shortlist for Scottish Album of the Year (SAY), and features the universally loved hit "Raining All The Time", which will be our encore song at the end of the broadcast. We'll dive in to her songwriting efforts, which she acknowledges can leave her quite spent and "incredibly unwell", but she can't imagine doing anything else.We also touch on the collab she did having James Graham join her to sing on the track "Don't Borrow Grief From Later", which the title alone leaves you musing on its poetry.Hope you'll join us for the this lovely chat and the very medieval Scottish vibe, but mostly for Theo Bleak's incredible music.Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". The figures being used by the Treasury to estimate how many farmers will be impacted by changes to inheritance tax could be inaccurate, because of historical advice given by HMRC. That's according to the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers. The Government has introduced 20% inheritance tax on farm assets worth more than a million pounds. Farmers say the change will affect as many as three quarters of them, but the Treasury says data from previous claims for inheritance tax relief suggest just 500 estates a year across the UK will be impacted. We visit a pub in Perthshire which has an intimate relationship with the fortunes of the river it sits alongside.New Government legislation's being proposed to widen the public's access to National Parks in England, and to restore more protected landscapes. The Welsh government has backed down on its policy to insist farmers put ten percent of their land into woodland. The decision came after farmers demonstrated against the government's plans for its Sustainable Farming Scheme, or SFS, which replaces the payments to farmers under the old EU Common Agriculture Policy. The SFS still includes previous ambitions of supporting sustainable food production, rewarding farmers for mitigating climate change and enhancing the environment. The Welsh government hopes the changes will encourage more farmers to join in. We speak to Deputy first Minister Huw Irranca-Davies, who is also Secretary for Climate and Rural Affairs in Wales, and get reaction to the changes. All this week we're looking at winter vegetables. Some winter veg has to be harvested by hand which is labour intensive and costly. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give The living water; thirsty one, Stoop down and drink, and live.” I came to Jesus, and I drank Of that life-giving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, And now I live in Him. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world's Light; Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise, And all thy day be bright.” I looked to Jesus, and I found In Him my Star, my Sun; And in that light of life I'll walk Till travelling days are done. Image supplied by scotlandbigpicture.com Rewilding Nation declaration call for Scotland as Charter launched First-ever figures reveal 2% of Scotland's land now rewilding More than 2% of Scotland's land is now rewilding according to new figures from the Scottish Rewilding Alliance, as it launches a Rewilding Nation Charter calling for Scotland to declare itself the world's first rewilding nation. Despite growing praise for its rewilding progress, Scotland remains one of the most nature-depleted countries on Earth. The new Charter says rewilding offers hope for restoring habitats and saving wildlife, with major benefits for people, but much more needs to be done. The Alliance is urging people from all walks of life to sign the Rewilding Nation Charter which calls on the Scottish Government to commit to nature recovery across 30% of land and sea. The campaign includes a new feature-length film called Why Not Scotland?, which explores how rewilding could happen on a bigger scale in the country. The documentary will be shown on a nationwide screening tour including Oban, Peebles, Dundee, and Inverness, following an Edinburgh premiere. "Climate breakdown and nature loss mean we face an unprecedented threat to our way of life and our children's future. But it's not too late. Scotland can lead the way as a Rewilding Nation to benefit nature, climate and people," said Steve Micklewright, Scottish Rewilding Alliance Convenor and Chief Executive of Trees for Life. Scotland is ranked 212 out of 240 countries and territories for the state of its nature, and 11% of its species face extinction. Intensive agriculture and climate breakdown are having the biggest impacts on biodiversity, according to the authoritative State of Nature 2023 report, with other threats including non-native forestry, pollution, and introduced species. This is undermining access to food, fresh water and clean air. It is hampering efforts to lock away carbon, and harming people's health and wellbeing, says the Scottish Rewilding Alliance, a coalition of more than 20 organisations. But growing numbers of communities, charities, farmers and landowners are taking action to turn Scotland's nature crisis around - helping society cope with climate breakdown's floods, wildlife die-offs, droughts and crop failures, while creating jobs and economic opportunities. In the first-ever such figures released, the Scottish Rewilding Alliance calculates 2.1% of Scotland's land is now rewilding, with more than 150 projects covering at least 160,000 hectares, from community woodlands to landscape-scale partnerships. This includes members of Rewilding Britain's UK-wide Rewilding Network, and the Scotland-wide Northwoods Rewilding Network, led by SCOTLAND: The Big Picture. Rewilding 30% of Scotland can be achieved by restoring wild habitats including peatlands, native woodlands, wetlands, rivers and seas, with no loss of productive farmland. Rewilding goes hand-in-hand with nature-led farming, fishing and forestry, the Alliance says. Produced by SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, the Why Not Scotland? film explores the Scottish landscape through the eyes of Flo Blackbourn, a young Scot from Glasgow, who sets out on a personal journey to find inspiring examples of major nature recovery around Europe. "My journey to see how rewilding can help nature and people thrive together was life-changing and such a source of hope. Like many young people, I'm worried about the uncertain future we all face with climate breakdown and nature loss - but life can bounce back if we give it a chance, and work with nature instead of against it," said Flo (27). "The nature and climate crises can feel overwhelming, but we can all make a difference by uniting behind a clear message. We're calling on everyone who shares our hopes and sense of urgency to sign the Rewilding Nation Charter to help create a greener, fairer country," said Alliance member Tom Bowser, farmer and owner of Argaty Red Kites in Perthshire. In 2024, Scotland marks two big anniversaries: David I ascended the throne nine centuries ago and James I of Scotland began his reign 600 years ago. Both Kings played a role in shaping Scotland's ideas about its monarchy. How did David shape Scotland, and what relevance does the Stone of Destiny have - then, and now, as it returns to its native Perthshire? We look at the Scottish dream-vision, initiated by James I in writing Scotland's first love poem, sparking a new tradition lasting through the Renaissance and beyond. Scottish poet Len Pennie goes in search of the student plotters and literary sensations who schemed to get back the ultimate symbol of Scotland - the Stone of Scone. It was the early mediaeval inauguration seat of the Scottish kings, once more important than a crown. The stone sat blamelessly in Scone Abbey waiting to be taken out every time a new monarch had to be made. But then it was nicked, in 1296 King Edward I wanted to extinguish Scots kingship - so he grabbed the stone and took it to Westminster Abbey to sit in the coronation chair of the Kings of England. There was surprisingly little fuss. But in the early 20th century - something stirred. Scottish home rulers and nationalists wanted it back - the stone became a symbol not just of sovereignty but of outrage and injustice. All kinds of marvellous schemes were dreamt up to get it back. At Christmas 1950 one of them succeeded. Join Len to find out how a lump of Perthshire sandstone became the subject of an audacious heist.

In this episode of Bourbon With Friends. The Crew are in Aberfeldy Scotland at the Dewars Aberfeldy Distillery. We are once again joined by Craig who showed us around and pretty sure formed a brolationship with Connor as they bonded over their love of comic book movies.  First planned in 1896 by the sons of John Dewar, Dewar's Aberfeldy Distillery is the onlyScotch whisky distillery built by the Dewar family. Dewar's was already a highly successful brand of blended whisky, renowned for its quality, and the company needed more single malt whisky to use in its blend. The Dewar family's pursuit of whisky perfection continues to this day, and they still produce whisky in a way that they would recognise instantly. In common with most Scotch whisky distilleries, malted Scottish barley to make the whisky is brought to site, with the old Malting House now home to our beautiful Whisky Lounge and Cafe. Due to vastly increased demand, we now mature our spirit elsewhere in Scotland, meaning our former filling station and warehouse have escaped modernisation and serve as a highly atmospheric tour area and home to our Cask Tasting. This is the ideal backdrop to explain how Dewar's premium blends are ‘double-aged', with a secondary resting in oak barrels once the blend is created. The costly process gives an extra smoothness to the final whisky. The creation of the distinctive Aberfeldy spirit all takes place onsite, with our extra long fermentation in larch washbacks, and distillation in our tall pot stills overlooking the rolling Perthshire hills. These processes create the honeyed-richness for which Aberfeldy whisky is renowned. Now popular in its own right as a single malt, Aberfeldy still makes up the heart of the Dewar's blend, contributing its heather honey flavour to America's best selling Scotch whisky. You can learn more about the distillery here. www.dewars.comFollow on Instagram. @dewarsaberfeldyCheck out our sponsors!Kentucky Eagle INC. - Kentucky Eagle is growing and in need of talented people with a passion for wine and spirits. In this episode of Bourbon With Friends. The team is in Scotland at stop #1 of their 2022 Tour of Scotland. We sit down with Maree and Graham of Morrison Distillers. We had a great time discussing Whisky and enjoying their amazing hospitality! In 2017, Morrison started distilling a new single malt in Aberargie, Perthshire. Aptly named Aberargie Distillery, it is located on our family's 300 acre farm just outside of Perth. This Lowlands distillery is a “barley to bottle” operation set up to produce a rich, fruity and waxy style of whisky with the occasional peated run. Aberargie predominately uses Golden Promise, a heritage variety of barley that has not been widely used by the whisky industry for several years and is grown on our own farm. You can find them at https://www.morrisondistillers.com/Check out our sponsors!Kentucky Eagle INC. - Kentucky Eagle is growing and in need of talented people with a passion for wine and spirits. Episode Description: In this episode of Duchess, Emma Rutland meets the wonderful Sarah Troughton, custodian of one of Scotland's most enchanting stately homes - Blair Castle. In the episode, Sarah reveals how the Dukes of Atholl, who once called Blair their home, inherited the title of Lord of Mann - head of state of the Isle of Man. The Duchess is given the background on the Atholl Highlanders - Europe's last private army, and we're introduced to a former custodian who was not only the first female minister of state, but who also stood against Hitler. Top Quotes: “My greatest ambition with Blair Castle is to keep everything in tact but also to move with the times.” - Sarah Troughton “My advice to future custodians is to enjoy it. Remember to get to know everyone. Be observant, conserve and introduce new ideas.” - Sarah Troughton About the Guest and Stately Home: Sarah Troughton is a half-sister of the late Iain, 10th Duke of Atholl and she is the Head Trustee of the Blair Atholl Estate. Sarah is descended from a long line of incredible women. She was also the 21st Grand Master of the Keepers of the Quaich: an exclusive and international society that recognises those that have shown outstanding commitment to the Scotch Whisky industry. Her husband is the architect Jamie Troughton. Blair Castle is one of Scotland's greatest castles, seated in the Highlands of Scotland near the village of Blair Atholl in Perthshire. It is the ancestral home of the Murray Clan, and was historically the seat of their chieftain, the Duke of Atholl. The castle is a category A listed building, and the grounds are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, the national listing of significant gardens. Blair is also the home to the Atholl Highlanders which is the only remaining private army in Europe, and act as the personal bodyguard to the Dukes of Atholl. About the Host: Emma Rutland, The Duchess of Rutland, did not always stride the halls of stately homes. Born Emma Watkins, the Duchess grew up the daughter of a Quaker farmer, in the Welsh marsh countryside. She trained as an opera singer in the Guildhall School of Music, and worked as a successful interior designer before meeting her future husband David Manners, the 11th Duke of Rutland, at a dinner party. Their marriage in 1992 would transform Emma Watkins into the 11th Duchess of Rutland, thrusting her into the world of aristocracy, and handing her the responsibility of one of the nation's great treasures: Belvoir Castle. While simultaneously running the day to day operations of the castle, and raising five children, The Duchess became fascinated with the history and importance of the other stately homes of the UK. Join The Duchess as she embarks on a wonderful journey through time, to learn more about the incredible homes that have defined Great Britain and, most importantly, meet the other extraordinary women who work tirelessly behind their doors to preserve their history and magic for future generations. Alan Cumming's wide-ranging career on stage includes playing Hamlet, starring opposite Daniel Radcliffe in Samuel Beckett's Endgame and – perhaps most notably - taking the role of the Emcee in the musical Cabaret in London and New York to great acclaim: his 1998 Broadway performance won seven awards, including a Tony. He's also appeared in films including GoldenEye and Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, and in the TV series The Good Wife. Alan was born in Perthshire in 1965. His father was a forester and the family moved to the Panmure estate on the east coast of Scotland. Encouraged by his English teacher, Alan grew up loving drama at school but his childhood was blighted by his violent and abusive father. He worked for the publisher DC Thomson as a sub-editor before going to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. There he launched his performing career with fellow student Forbes Masson: together they were Victor and Barry, a comedy and music double-act. They drew on these characters for their BBC TV sit-com The High Life, based around a fictional Scottish airline. Alan has published a novel and three memoirs: his 2014 autobiography Not My Father's Son detailed his very difficult relationship with his father, both in his early years and later in his life. In 2022 Alan is developing a solo dance-theatre work, focusing on the personal history of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, which he will perform in Scotland and New York. He's now also the co-owner of a bar, Club Cumming, in Manhattan.
