Brent Gunning returns to the host's chair alongside Daniele Franceschi to chat about the MLB All-Star festivities and Home Run Derby last night. They discuss this year's field in the derby, if it was lacking some star potential, and which competitors could take that next step to superstardom. They focus on the Mariners' Cal Raleigh, who ended up winning the event, and how the man now known as ‘Big Dumper' was seemingly showcased. B&D also look into Brent Rooker's comments that hinted at a bit of conspiracy and unfair play against him. The duo then get into the state of Major League Baseball and competitive balance after Rob Manfred's comments, with thoughts on the Pirates and the future of Paul Skenes. The hour ends with a 'Golf Report' looking at the return of The Open to Portrush. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
The Smylie Show is on the road this week! Smylie Kaufman joins from the airport after a fun week in Tahoe, with Charlie Hulme on a quick trip to Ponte Vedra Beach. SK and CH begin the show recapping Chris Gotterup's breakthrough win at the Scottish Open, and whether he can complement his skill driving the ball with more complete performances like what we saw in North Berwick to take his game to the next level. After a near miss and a T2 in Scotland, Smylie and Charlie discuss a more relaxed looking Rory McIlroy, and where that positions him heading into a home game at Royal Portrush. Brandel Chamblee then joins Smylie to close the episode with a wide-ranging first look at the Open Championship, both previewing the 153rd edition and discussing whether some historic anchor sites like the Old Course can stand up to the increasing impact of technology on the game. Northern Irish native Tom McKibbin joins Garrett from LIV Virginia and we discuss all things The Open and his love of Portrush. How many times has he played the castle course and what kind of questions does it ask of competitors for the 153rd Open Championship? We also discuss the strengths of his game and why the wind is not always something he likes to deal with on links courses.
A new documentary airing this week This is Open Country, coming to Sky Sports Golf and NOW. Ahead of the Open arriving into Portrush next week, this one-hour special feature examines just how golfers from the island of Ireland have proved to be undeniably successful at this great tournament. For the first time within one film, we hear from Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Pádraig Harrington and Darren Clarke, to understand what transformed these four men from young boys on the golf course to Major success. Ivan spoke to its Director Ross Whitaker.
As the 2025 Open Championship returns to Royal Portrush, we sit down with someone who knows the land, the game and the moment better than most. Justin Parsons—coach to the likes of Brian Harman, Harris English and Louis Oosthuizen—grew up just down the coast in County Down, learning the game on windswept turf and nine-hole loops near oyster farms. In this wide-ranging conversation with host Casey Bannon, Parsons reflects on Northern Ireland's rich golf culture, how pros adapt to links conditions, and what it takes to compete at The Open. Along the way: lessons from Harman's win at Hoylake, thoughts on developing young pros, Portrush pub tips and a reminder that sometimes the draw beats the field. The Golfer's Journal and this podcast are made possible by reader support. With The 153rd Open just around the corner, Iona Stephen, Rob Lee, and Di Stewart head to Royal Portrush to play the course in testing conditions and find out what this year's field will be up against. From battling the elements on the iconic Dunluce Links to sitting down in the clubhouse to reflect on their round over a dram, the trio dive deep into what makes Portrush such a demanding Open venue. Expect insight, laughs, and plenty of debate as they preview the storylines, players to watch, and how the course could shape this year's Champion Golfer. In Part 1, the trio tackle the front nine so keep an eye out for Part 2....coming soon!
It's a throwback audio episode with Brendan using his Airpods after finding himself in a travel delay. Nevertheless, Andy is on cloud nine over on Westy Island after Lee Westwood qualified for this month's Open Championship at Royal Portrush. The two reminisce about Westy's t-4 performance and stand-up morals at the 2019 Open before running through the rest of the 2025 qualifiers from overseas. They are particularly chuffed by Richard Teder, a 20-year-old from Estonia who holed out for eagle in a playoff to secure his spot at Portrush. Andy wonders if Dick Teder is the first player in a new generation of golfers - the Rory (Sabbatini) generation. LIV's 2026 schedule was leaked and the league won't make a stop in the United States until mid-May. Brendan and Andy run through the dates and the travel plans needed to play at majors throughout the world, such as going from Spain to Shinnecock Hills for the U.S. Open. From there, it's time for some lock-hammer-fire picks for the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run. The "Champion House" is back and is sure to be catnip for the entirety of the week. It's the strongest field in tournament history and there's no better example of that than Rickie Fowler returning to the Quad Cities for the first time since 2010. Andy shares a little 2010 time capsule to contextualize how long its been since Rickie played the Deere and gets Brendan to sing along to some Ke$ha on a Tuesday afternoon. In news, Adam Schupak reported that numerous PGA Tour legends are unhappy that they've been cut out of the new equity program coming as part of the PGA Tour Enterprises company. 36 former players will receive money based on a "career points" system that prioritized PGA Tour wins and starts, leaving European stars like Tony Jacklin and Nick Faldo on the outside looking in. They are, predictably, unhappy and voiced their displeasure to Golfweek, leading to a lengthy discussion from Andy and Brendan. Tune in to CBS Sports Network at Noon ET on Wednesday, July 2, for the Team Europe Wheel of Mules on "Eye on Golf with The Shotgun Start."

Over the course of the next number of short episodes we wilI take a look at another character that influenced the early development and growth of golf in Ireland. He was a scratch player of some repute, competing extensively in the elite national amateur championships of the day. However, it was in the administration of the game that he really excelled, influencing golf at Trinity College, Dollymount, Portrush, Belfast and beyond. Babington and the positive influence that he brought to bear throughout the island of Ireland. I hope you enjoy his recollections! Many thanks for tuning in. We were fortunate to sit down with John Bamber, Chairman of the Championship Committee for the 2019 Open and hear all about the commitment/effort/determination required to get the Championship back to the north coast of Northern Ireland. In this episode of Eggsplorations, Fried Egg Golf brings in two guests they met out and about in Portstewart and Portrush. The first is Dr. Joe McGoldrick, who they met in the Harbor Bar on their first night in town and would run into again at the very same spot late the next night. Dr. Joe is a bit of a legend who has been all around the world golfing and surfing, but always comes back to Portrush to get right. He's also an incredible storyteller and one-liner wordsmith who charmed us over multiple days in Portrush. The second guest is Dave Lynas, who we ran into our first morning in Portstewart at one of the best coffee shops you'll encounter anywhere in the world, Lost & Found. Dave just so happens to be the owner and operator of said coffee shop, which was impeccably designed and looks out over the sea right on the cliffs. Dave grew up in Portstewart and could be a so-called “pioneer” in the surfing culture before it got big in the last 15 years or so. His discusses his roots in the Causeway Coast area and what drew him back with his family after a lengthy stint in Dublin. Both guests bring a local flavor from each town, sometimes framed as “rivals” but two gems where you could spend several weeks. They should give you a sense of the people, hospitality, and culture we've encountered.
Andy and Brendan record this Players Championship “preview” from the shore of Portrush in Northern Ireland and they have many questions about Jay Monahan's state of the tour (and pro golf?) press conference at TPC Sawgrass. They wonder why everyone was so worked up about it and if he was as poor and bumbling as portrayed. They also discuss the lack of pop around this Players, and how only some of it relates to the loss of talent in the field and how this event cannot even begin to argue it approximates a major now. They also discuss the overseeded and soft conditions they've been informed of from the ground, and whether it's fruitless to hope for anything else. The back half runs through some favorite tee times and not-so-favorite tee times, leading down the path of examining one player's recent resume that sort of brings to light Rory McIlroy's comments about a more “cutthroat” tour last week. Some one-and-done picks are made before they push off with an event of the week nominee they encountered in Northern Ireland.
Andy and Brendan record this from Portrush, where the driving on the wrong side of the road has improved … at least up until the point the car nearly went into the sea. Then they begin this episode with a Tosti Tale from the Puerto Rico Open, where there was a kerfuffle over where a ball might have crossed the hazard. Matteo Manassero is also given his flowers, per SGS custom. Then, at long last, they get to the No. 1 player in the world winning at Bay Hill. They discuss Scottie Scheffler's putting improvements and outline why Bay Hill, while an abomination of a golf course, is perfect for his strengths. They also discuss the Wyndham Clark “cheating” / mashing uproar, Rory's rollercoaster, and the rhetoric that the Tour needs to get more “cutthroat.” How would that work? LIV's Hong Kong event is also covered with a focus on Anthony Kim's impressive 65. Tiger not committing to The Players is covered in news. They have some thoughts on Brice Garnett, winner of the PR Open, and whether he is 4A or something else. Last but not least, they marvel at Hosung Choi making his Champions Tour debut at the Dump-in-a-Box Classic.
Josie Riesman joins us to talk about her book on Vince McMahon, the head of the WWE and arguably the creator of modern wrestling, who is now undergoing a long-overdue downfall after certain allegations came to light. Jumped on a train from Belfast to Portrush, Northern Ireland. Portrush is a seaside resort town and I was there during the off-season. I kinda equate it with Jersey Shore or Coney Island. Since it was the off-season there was no wait to see anything, downside is there wasn't really much going on to go see. This video is a quick highlight of the thing I saw and did in Belfast. Portrush is home to the Royal Portrush Golf Club, the only golf club outside Great Britain which has hosted The Open Championship in 1951 and 2019. SUBSCRIBE to watch more videos like this one! Professor Paul Rouse from University College Dublin joins us on this episode to trace the origin story of Irish golf. Commentators often erroneously pair the games' development in Ireland to that of Scotland - in this episode we explore how its' development in Ireland has more commonalities with the development trajectory in England than that exhibited in Bonnie Scotland. From Elias de Butts documented efforts in 1762 on common land in Bray, Co. Wicklow, to the Scottish/Military influence through the Curragh Camp in Kildare, the Royal Clubs of Belfast, Dublin, Down and Portrush and onwards to the real golf boom in the late 1890's and onwards into the next few decades. How the Great War, 1916 Rising and the Irish civil war changed Ireland and its' golf clubs forever, not to mention the more recent new club boom and the democratisation of golf that accompanied the rise and subsequent economic fall of the Celtic Tiger, Floridian resort golf 'Irish Style', the Ryder Cup and where the game goes from here. Many thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy the show! Special Guest: Professor Paul Rouse.
If you follow us on social media or even listened to past episodes, you know that the 2022 Ireland trip was highly anticipated. Now, it's over. We bring you this episode as a Pepe x Bash banter sesh and call in three of our buddies who were on the trip. We talk golf, travel, and what it was like playing across the pond. Our lineup of courses we played is Portstewart, Portrush, Royal County Down, Ardglass, The Island, and Portmarnock. If you haven't been, you better go.We open up the episode and phone in our first guest, Brandon Katzeff, aka BKatz. We take his perspective on the trip and hear his thoughts. We ask what his most ‘miserable' moment in Ireland was..because, let's be honest, sometimes the course will get the best of ya. We then phone in our second ‘guest,' Brian John, aka Bimmer. Bimmer carries a smile wherever he goes. Fortunately, his smile and positive attitude helped to carry him through the links. We hear Bimmer's take on Ireland, and his excitement can't be missed. Bouncing like a kangaroo, everyone's weekend golf group needs a Bimmer! We wrap up the episode with our grand finale, Mr. Ian Patrick Archer, aka IPA! Ian is known for his social media game where he shares every and any bit of content he can capture. If you followed along, he conducted caddie interviews, swing shots, and other content from the trip. Aside from IP's motion sickness, his trip across the pond was a clean one, and if you don't know IP, you need to. As always, we thank you for listening to our podcast and specifically this episode! Shane Lowry, 2019 Open champion, joined the “Be Right” boys ahead of The Open to discuss his prep, the state of his game and how he expects the Old Course to play. The Irishman also takes us back to his celebration after Portrush—and reveals what the first drink was out of the claret jug (hint: he just signed a partnership with the same brand). The boys are also joined by Steve Bamford of the Golf Betting System to help break down the field and make our best bets for the final major of the year.As always, check GolfDigest.com for our full array of gambling content for the PGA Championship, including picks from our anonymous caddie, Pat Mayo of DraftKings/Mayo Media Network; Rick Gehman of RickRunGood.com; Brandon Gdula of numberFire/FanDuel; and Lee Alldrick of FanShareSports.
Katherine Downes and BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter are joined by Ladies European Tour winner Trish Johnson to celebrate the British and Irish golfers who have lifted the Claret Jug. From Tony Jacklin to Shane Lowry, the panel share their favourite memories and stories of those Open Championships, which resulted in a home-grown hero. You'll hear at length from Sandy Lyle on what it was like to win The Open in 1985 at Royal St. George's and how even a streaker didn't put him off from winning. And Shane Lowry joins the pod with Irish rugby legend Brian O'Driscoll to discuss Lowry's memorable victory at Portrush in 2019. The gang from Derry Girls are off on a day trip and the TDG's are out of their comfort zone. What is it about the seaside destination of Portrush with to quote James, "it's Protestant, Unionist majority" that makes Marie-Louise and Jeanie feel so alienated? Memories of daytrips past and souvenirs never to be forgotten are swallowed up faster than a bag of Tayto Cheese and Onion… sorry Orla but Salt and vinegar are for savages.
