Introduction: Host Michael Rand takes note of Wild owner Craig Leipold's comments Wednesday on Ryan Suter and Zach Parise plus the Kirill Kaprizov signing. On both fronts, it was a good dose of honesty from the Wild owner. Leipold said he would do the Parise and Suter signings again "in an absolute second" and said he was convinced Kaprizov would sign. 6:00: Star Tribune columnist La Velle E. Neal III joins the show to talk about some interesting Twins news about reassigning their hitting coach and his plan to put Jorge Polanco back at shortstop in 2022 (which has Rand's support as well). Plus Neal and Rand revisit the predictions they made about individual performances for Twins players six months ago to see who fared better. Let's just say La Velle did better than Rand -- and the Twins. 21:00: Four things about Phil Miller's season-ending Twins roster breakdown caught Rand's eye. 25:00: Some love for the Wild Card format, something MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred actually got right. And Rand answers a couple of your burning questions about music.

We are closing in on the start of a new season, with preseason games in full swing.  With that in mind, we give our predictions for the top 3 teams in each division, the bottom 3 in the league, the President's Trophy and the Rocket Richard Trophy.  Andrei Deniskin was suspended by the UHL for his racist behavior during a game between his team, HC Kremenchuk, and HC Donbass.  His gesture and comments were directed at a young, black hockey player, Jalen Smereck.  Sadly, this is not the worst of the situation.  We had a very difficult time holding our tongues and not lashing out at this atrocious behavior.  Kristin Welsh is to be congratulated as she has become the first woman linesman in the OHL.  Robin Lehner, never one to keep his opinions to himself, has taken to Twitter in defense of Jack Eichel and the ongoing situation.  The NCAA has released its preseason rankings and there are many M-state schools in the top 10 and beyond.  We break down the Red Wings and what to expect.  Finally we discuss our Twitter Poll asking about Chara and Parise.  Who will have more of an impact for the Islanders.  Lots of discussion to be had here, so give a listen and comment.  Enjoy the Show!

The Effects of Early Life Stress on Mammalian Development (Catherine J. Peña)

In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we caught up with Catherine Jensen Peña from Princeton University to talk about her work on early life stress and its effects on behavior. The Laboratory of Catherine Peña focuses on how early life experiences are encoded and maintained into adulthood, with a long-lasting impact on behavior. Recent work showed, that child maltreatment and other forms of early life stress increase the lifetime risk of depression and other mood, anxiety, and drug disorders by 2-4 fold. The Peña Lab uses genome wide approaches to investigate key brain regions with a two-hit stress model. Using RNA-Seq, the Peña Lab has shown that depression-like gene expression patterns are programmed by early life stress, similar to observations in mice exhibiting depression-like behavior after adult stress and are visible even before behavioral changes. Furthermore, latent and unique transcriptional responses to adult stress among a subset of genes is programmed by early life stress. The role of chromatin modifications in regulating these processes are investigated using state of the art technologies like Mod-Spec or ATAC-Seq.   References Kronman, H., Torres-Berrío, A., Sidoli, S., Issler, O., Godino, A., Ramakrishnan, A., Mews, P., Lardner, C. Intro: Host Michael Rand opens today's show with a nod to the Bucks, who claimed their first NBA title in 50 years behind a 50-point, 14-rebound, five-block mammoth performance from star Giannis Antetokounmpo in Tuesday's 105-98 Game 6 win over Phoenix. It's OK to like a Wisconsin team. The Bucks are likeable. Just try not to focus too much on how the Wolves could have drafted Giannis in 2013. 4:00: Rand is joined by Star Tribune Wild beat writer Sarah McLellan for a deep look at the Wild's plan going forward after last week's stunning news that they had bought out the contracts of not only Zach Parise but also Ryan Suter. It means savings this season but a lot of dead money on their salary cap in a couple of years. How do they navigate that challenge while still trying to build a competitive team -- particularly since they stand to lose another key affordable player in Wednesday's expansion draft? 29:00: Aaron Rodgers reportedly turned down a contract offer from Green Bay that would have made him the highest-paid player in the NFL. Where does that leave things with training camp set to open next week?

Patrick Reusse on Suter/Parise, can't hate the Bucks + Twins

On Monday's episode, Patrick Reusse joins host Michael Rand as they catch up on all the biggest stories from the weekend and beyond. First up, Reusse and Rand tackle last week's huge decision by the Wild and GM Bill Guerin to buy out the contracts of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter -- a move that will save the Wild on the salary cap in the short term but has plenty of long-term implications. Reusse wants Wild fans to remember that Parise and Suter, though coming well short of delivering a championship during their nine seasons here, did help revive a sluggish franchise. With the Bucks one game away from winning the NBA title, they also examine this question: Why don't Minnesota fans, who tend to loathe Wisconsin teams, seem to hate the Milwaukee Bucks? Quite the contrary, they actually seem to like the Bucks. And the poor Twins. If they thought they could do something special coming out of the All-Star break, as slugger Nelson Cruz said, getting shut out twice and being swept in Detroit probably wasn't the version of special they had in mind. But it does sharpen the focus even more on the impending trade deadline, including what to do with Jose Berrios. The Loons beat Seattle for the first time? Reusse wants to see more.
