Wait, why are mermaids so gay? It turns out everyone's favorite sea-gals have been floating around for millennia, from ancient Syrian mer-goddesses to medieval water witches, all the way up to Princess Ariel. But how did these dangerous divas of the deep become the sympathetic heroines we love and cherish today? What is it about mermaids that makes them such magnets for LGBTQ+ symbolism? Join me and Sacha Coward, author of Queer As Folklore, as we unpack the myth, the magic, and the mer-MAN of it all in this 3,000 year history of queer people chasing tail. — If you want more from Historical Homos, you can join our cult on our website. It's LGBTQ+ History Month 2022 and Alex Milsom and Shivani Dave are exploring all things queer history in this episode of the Virgin Radio Pridecast. The show looks back through the archives of three-month pop-up radio station Virgin Radio Pride, highlighting some of the best moments, as well as attempting to continue the important conversations started over the summer. It has already featured topics including Coming Out, HIV/AIDS, and even the relationship which the LGBTQ+ community has with education…In this LGBTQ+ History special, you'll hear from Michael Bronski, the author of 'A Queer History of the United States' and Fleur MacInnes, a PhD student researching trans women & women's liberation through oral history. They discuss if museums have a responsibility to teach about LGBTQ+ history and the importance of teaching ourselves about our own past. You'll also hear from self proclaimed 'LGBTQ+ history dude' Sacha Coward on how the Pride Flag came to be, as well as Philip Harper Deakin who told Virgin Radio Pride about when he was prosecuted for gay sexual activity, and the harsh punishments he received.Plus, Daryl Jackson has your weekly update! Finally, you'll hear from Irish club promoter Buzz O'Neill about the origins of Pride in Ireland, and the murder of Declan Flynn. Buzz's story is incredible as he not only remembers our history, he was a part of it.Expect all that, and so much more on this week's Virgin Radio Pridecast! Hosted on Acast. Woke historians are now arguing some Vikings were actually transgender. Sacha Coward, who specializes in gender and sexuality, said it “would be a mistake” to believe Vikings ascribed to traditional gender roles. Her reasoning? A few recent discoveries suggested that some celebrated warriors were female. Of course, the logical conclusion to this data is to assume that they were in fact trans and not just women. U.S. intelligence officials accused conservative financial news website Zero Hedge of amplifying Russian propaganda. Despite the claim, officials did not say whether they thought Zero Hedge knew of any links to spy agencies and did not allege any direct links between the website and Russia. This news comes after Russia claimed the Ukraine standoff was over and that they would be withdrawing their troops from the border. Russian officials taunted the Biden administration for their “war hysterics.” The Freedom Convoy protests in Canada continue to be quite effective. The Ottawa Police Chief is resigning after criticizing the truckers and accusing them of “harmful” activities and promoting “hatred” and “violence.” Unfortunately, Justin Trudeau has yet to tender his resignation and is still determined to make Canada the new China. [A pilot for a new show I developed about living in London. I'm really proud of how it turned out, but I just don't have the time to make more episodes, so it's going to live here on the Museum in Strange Places feed. I meet up with escape room creator, museum professional, and self-proclaimed mermaid hunter Sacha Coward, who takes me somewhere that will inspire me a bit and help me see the beauty in London’s “layers of puked-up history.” Sacha also knows some great queer history stories about the area and has great advice about finding my own spaces in the city. I share some personal feelings and try to put Sacha’s advice into practice.
