In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by author Mary O'Regan to talk about one of the most incredible, influential, and mind-boggling saints out there, our very favourite, Padre Pio. Mary begins with her own amazing story of Padre Pio, a near-death experience, and some life-changing visions – and from there, it gets even weirder! Mary is a wonderful storyteller and brings to the fore the life and works of Padre Pio including his incredible ability to help convert souls to Catholicism, he extraordinary graces in the confessional, and what it means to be a "spiritual child" of the great Padre Pio – a saint who lived a miraculous life under the scrutiny of modern science! For more from Mary check out her blog and get a copy of her book Padre Pio and You from Sofia Institute Press today!Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. Episode 160We know we're called to holiness, that we're called to be saints. But have we really grappled with what holiness means? With what becoming saints really mean? In my latest podcast episode I share how I have come to ask these questions in much more earnest after learning about how even canonised saints commit great harm to people, and how some of these harmful actions are even considered by many as part of holiness.I dive into the concepts of sainthood and holiness, especially in light of personal experiences with trauma and spiritual abuse. Reflecting on the stories of saints like Padre Pio and Mother Teresa, I explore how their actions and the narratives surrounding them can impact our understanding of holiness. I encourage viewers to question and reconsider what it means to be holy, particularly from the perspective of embodied spiritual and emotional health. ShownotesLast week we talked to Susan Brinkman from Women of Grace about necromancy, mediums and conjuring the dead and as our conversation confirmed God forbids these actions. Ironically, in today's episode we are going to talk about what the deceased want us to know about heaven and purgatory. But I promise you we are breaking no rules. As Susan pointed out last week there are disembodied souls waiting for us to pray them into heaven, but we should not try to contact them. In fact there are many Saints in the church who have had approved visions: Padre Pio, St. Tolentino, St. Gertrude, as well as even mystic Maria Simma, whose writings about the souls in purgatory received the imprimatur. Souls who have come from purgatory have sought out the prayers of individuals to gain entrance into heaven. Yet the question remains: What can we learn from these souls? Our GuestsLeslea Wahl lives in beautiful Colorado and is the author of several award-winning teen novels. She strives to write stories that encourage teens to grow in their faith through fun adventurous mysteries. Leslea is often inspired by her family, their travels, and real-life adventures. Besides writing Leslea also reviews faith-based novels on her website and is a founding member of CatholicTeenBooks.com.Theresa Linden is the author of award-winning Catholic fiction for children, teens, and adults, including Tortured Soul, a purgatory soul story that won recognition in the Catholic Media Association book awards. In this Halloween special, the Puglia Guys take you deep into the Gargano — Puglia's wild northern promontory where faith and fear have shared the same mountains for centuries. We begin in San Giovanni Rotondo, today one of the world's busiest pilgrimage sites, where millions come to honour Padre Pio, the friar who bore the stigmata and claimed to battle demons in the skies above his monastery. Then we climb higher still, to Monte Sant'Angelo, the ancient shrine of Saint Michael the Archangel — a place once said to mark the very gate of heaven. But where heaven opens so near to earth, shadows gather too. From Padre Pio's letters describing his nightly assaults by unseen forces, to the mist-filled Foresta Umbra, where locals whisper of the lupi mannari — the werewolves of Gargano — we follow the line where sanctity blurs into superstition. Pour yourself a glass of dark Puglian red — Negroamaro or Primitivo — and listen as we journey from pilgrimage to possession, from light into darkness. Faith, folklore and fear intertwine in this chilling exploration of Puglia's holiest and most haunted land. Follow us on Instagram - if you dare - for frequent video stories, reels, photos, ideas and other information to inspire your stay in Puglia.
7 True Stories of Purgatory: The Purifying Fire (Ep. 486)Following last week's 7 Hallowed Stories of Holiness, this week we take you on a journey into other incredible, true stories of mercy. Purgatory is not God's punishment; it is His love, finishing its work.In this powerful special, we explore seven true stories that reveal the fire of mercy that purifies the soul for heaven. From the burned handprints preserved in Rome's Purgatory Museum to St. Catherine of Genoa's vision of love's refining flame; from St. Margaret Mary's suffering for a soul in need to Padre Pio's encounter with the “ghost” of a workman who waited for the Mass that would set him free—each story unveils a facet of God's justice made tender. (MANUSCRIPT)These are not ghost stories—they're grace stories.Listen as heaven's veil lifts and the saints remind us: love continues, prayer matters, and mercy never ends. Because the flames we fear are the same that free
Love to hear from you; “Send us a Text Message”What if the question “What do I still lack?” is the doorway to your real vocation? We follow that question from the Gospel of the rich young man into the very real struggles of modern life—noise, distraction, and the hunger to be seen—and then further into a surprising WWII encounter with Padre Pio that ignites a forgotten calling. We share Act 7 of the Claymore Battle Plan, a simple, repeatable path for young men (and anyone who loves them) to live the Christian vocation to love as God loves. You'll also get a practical morning routine to anchor your day: kneel before the phone, echo Mary's fiat, listen for God's will, and treat every temptation as an invitation to pray. We talk candidly about concupiscence, mercy, confession, and the daily choice to see persons, not objects. Whether your path is marriage, consecrated life, or faithful work in the world, the foundation is the same: be filled by God, then give yourself away.If this conversation stirred something in you, subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a friend who's asking big questions. Love to hear from you; “Send us a Text Message”Charles Fraune—author, teacher, and founder of Slaying Dragons Press—joins us to unpack what exorcists and former occultists are seeing now, and why ordinary believers need extraordinary clarity. For young adults discerning marriage, fatherhood, or religious life, we offer a blunt but hopeful plan: pursue heroic virtue now, simplify your life, and let Mary lead you to her Son. If you've sensed that these are not ordinary times, you're not alone—and you're not powerless. We talk about choosing patrons for the times: Padre Pio for perseverance and purity, St. Alphonsus Liguori for moral clarity, and Bartolo Longo, once a consecrated satanic priest, who staked his salvation on Our Lady's promises and became a trumpet for the Rosary. We explore why demons fear Mary, how the Communion of Saints actually works, and what happens when you swap doom-scrolling and games for sacraments, Scripture, silence, and real friendship. The throughline is practical: close the portals (porn and gaming), curate your inputs, live the truth.Visit Charles Fraune and get a copy of "The Most Powerful Saints in Exorcisms"! [DONATE WITH PAYPAL] Greg delves deeper into the Catholic mystical tradition, defining mysticism as a profound union with God and tracing its history from early Church fathers to modern saints. Highlighting figures like St. Hildegard of Bingen, St. Teresa of Ávila, St. John of the Cross, St. Padre Pio, St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi, and St. Joan of Arc, he explores visions, ecstasies, and miracles that far surpass contemporary Pentecostal experiences in depth and transformative power. Contrasting these with charismatic gifts, Greg explains how Catholic mysticism—rooted in prayer, sacraments, and Church discernment—offers intimate, lifelong encounters with the divine. Addressing Protestant, Catholic, and secular listeners, this episode emphasizes the Spirit's enduring, profound work in the Church. Donate with PayPal! Patrick answers bold listener questions on the Garden of Eden, the destiny of Adam and Eve, and extraordinary biblical lifespans, blending these with heartfelt stories of marriage struggles and spiritual recovery. Surprises pop up as he discusses Catholic teachings on guardian angels, responds to debates about the Latin Mass and Martin Scorsese's saint documentaries, and even shares thoughts on mustache care. Brisk exchanges and raw honesty keep the conversation lively and unscripted. Lupe - Was the Garden of Eve real and did Adam and Eve go to Hell? Vinnie - I have a problem believing that people could live to 900 years old. How was that possible in the Bible? (06:47) Tom - My wife and I were separated 15 years ago, and we totally recovered from this. Surrendering and giving up really helped me. Your show really helped. (13:06) Sal (email) – Fr. Simon said it was okay to name your guardian angel. (20:14) Brother John - That earlier caller is turning the Church into a psychological issue. This is why we need the Confessional and need to acknowledge mortal and venial sin. (25:47) Joyce – Padre Pio named his guardian angel. (26:52) Shawn - Do you have any thoughts on the Martin Scorsese film, The Saints? (29:51) Brian - My dad took 4 years of Latin and ancient Greece. The New Mass doesn't give me any feeling. Ritual gives us tradition. Without the Latin Mass, we lose out on tradition and ritual. (39:30) Josiah - How are you able to keep a perfect mustache? (44:57) Tony - I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Is praying to more than one saint, ok? (48:39)

You Are the Temple of God: Becoming Dwelling Places of His Presence In the first reading scripture recalls the rebuilding of the temple after Israel's exile, . . . . . . highlighting that true dedication is not about stones and gold, but about the people offering themselves to God. Jesus deepens this teaching, declaring himself the true temple and reminding us that our hearts are where God longs to dwell. St. Paul Confirms: We are the Temples of God The Gospel parable of the Sower emphasizes that the Word of God only bears fruit when it falls on rich soil . . . hearts open and receptive. Mary is the perfect example of this, as she received God's Word and bore Jesus Himself. The memorial of Padre Pio illustrates the same truth: his heart was rich soil where God's Word took root, leading him to a life of prayer, spiritual battle, suffering, and union with Christ. Bearing the stigmata, Padre Pio embodied the suffering Christ and showed what it means to live as God's temple. The call today is clear: each of us is invited to become a true dwelling place of God, good soil where His Word can bear lasting fruit. Hear more and listen to this Meditation Media. Special Guest Host Cale Clarke highlights Father Joshua Whitfield’s fresh take on the parable of the dishonest steward, connecting it to how Christians treat the poor and what friendship with them means for eternity. He reflects on Saint Padre Pio’s feast day, including powerful excerpts from newly revealed letters filled with mystical insight and deep concern for the Church, especially priests. Alongside calls, lighthearted banter, and reflections on stewardship, Cale weaves in spiritual encouragement with practical Catholic wisdom. Today is the Feast Day of Padre Pio – Pray, hope and don’t worry (20:36) Cale recommends the book, “Secrets of a Soul: Padre Pio’s Letters to His Spiritual Directors” (23:16) Gary - Padre Pio's Letters. I have read these letters and read this line that you just mentioned. I understand the dynamics of how they played Padre Pio for their own benefit. (37:13)
Special Guest Host Cale Clarke marks the feast of Saint Padre Pio, sharing vivid stories of miracles, personal accounts from listeners, and the remarkable endurance of faith through scandal and doubt. He brings to light the stigmata, the mystic’s hidden wounds, Padre Pio’s humor, and the almost unbelievable wartime encounters that left lasting marks on those who crossed paths with the saint. Miracles, family stories, movie reflections, and honest takes on what holiness demands today, the episode pulses with real lives changed and the persistent call toward sanctity. Adam - Are the things that happened to Padre Pio still happening today to other people? (01:35) The spiritual gifts of Padre Pio (05:46) Cindy - I prayed to Padre Pio during a serious accident, and a child was saved because of this. The doctors couldn’t explain why his head was sealed. (22:19) Ron - My Uncle brought some sacramentals to Padre Pio to bless. Padre Pio knew the entire story of how my uncle got the sacramentals without him every meeting my uncle before! (24:42) Bozena - My mom wrote to Padre Pio in 1961. My little cousin was going blind and had cancer in the eye. She only had one eye. Her other eye became cancerous. Padre Pio wrote back to say that her cancerous eye would be ok, and it was! (35:06) Sylvia – About the Padre Pio Movie with Shia LaBeouf: the movie was great but wouldn't recommend it because of seductive scenes. (42:11)
Msgr. Esseff reflects on the life and teachings of St. Padre Pio. He shares personal stories from his relationship with St. Pio. Gospel LK 8:16-18 Jesus said to the crowd: “No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away.” The post St. Padre Pio and the Healing of the Church – Building a Kingdom of Love with Msgr. Friends of the Rosary,Today, September 23, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Pius of Pietrelcina (1887-1968), known as Padre Pio, a saint of the last century.Born Francesco, to poor farm workers in the small village of Pietrelcina, Italy, he joined the Capuchin Friars at the age of sixteen and was ordained a priest at the age of 22.For fifty years, at the monastery of San Giovanni Rotundo, he was a highly sought-after spiritual advisor, confessor, and intercessor, whose life was devoted to the Eucharist and prayer. While praying before a cross on September 20, 1918, Padre Pio received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ. He was the first priest ever to be so blessed. His fame spread widely, and with this came suspicion, false accusations, and repeated investigation by the Holy Office. He was reportedly able to bi-locate, levitate, read the consciences, and heal by touch.Yet despite his notoriety, he would often say, "I only want to be a poor friar who prays."Today, there are over 400,000 members worldwide in prayer groups begun by Padre Pio in the 1920s.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! In this episode of Hey Everybody, It's Fr. Edward, I speak with Mary O'Regan, author of the new Sophia Institute Press biography of Padre Pio. Mary shares the incredible story of how Padre Pio appeared to her in a mystical experience that changed her life and set her on the path of researching and writing about one of the Church's most beloved saints. We discuss: * How Padre Pio mystically visited Mary O'Regan and what it meant for her vocation. * Why we affectionately call him Padre Pio rather than St. Pio. * Padre Pio's promise not to enter Heaven until all his spiritual children are with him. * The healing Our Lady of Fatima received through Padre Pio's intercession. * John XXIII, the Third Secret of Fatima, and connections to Padre Pio. * Why Padre Pio, as the first priest to bear the stigmata, remains so significant. * Practical ways to grow in devotion to Padre Pio today. Whether you're just learning about Padre Pio or already have a devotion to him, this conversation will inspire you to discover anew the life, miracles, and message of this extraordinary saint.
Fr. Eric Nielsen joins Patrick to discuss Miracles: Padre Pio Who was Padre Pio and what miracles did he do? (14:03) Why do some people get miracles and others don’t? (17:19) Juliette - My father was in a bad accident. He is on a ventilator. Tried to remove it. Did not succeed. 84 years old. At what point is it too much. Miracle he survived. I feel like there have been some answered prayers. Is that a miracle in itself that he was able to communicate his wishes? (22:05) Break 1 (23:45) Helen - When my daughter was 3, my daughter had a brain tumor. She had tumor removed. Came back. Went through surgery again, I prayed and asked that she not suffer if she was going to be taken. Tumor disappeared and now she's 39 years old. She's my miracle baby. Does God allow bargaining? Dan - I worked as a hospice chaplain, and one of the greatest pieces of advice...sometimes we just need to get out of God's way and let God do what he needs to do. The miracle of bringing a soul to heaven is the ultimate miracle. (32:53) Brenda - My cousin heard mass by Padre Pio. Was part of my conversion to Catholicism. (37:10) Break 2 Barbara - Miracle when I was baptized. I was instantly delivered from smoking cigarettes. 45-year smoker. (41:59) Eileen - The priest who got me into my faith was leading a colorful life. Padre Pio told him he would become a priest one day. Love the story that he told him he would become a priest. Father shares an email about how can we pray when God doesn’t answer our prayer? (46:13) Brenda - Years after my mom passed, I was thinking about her and praying and walked to the living room and noticed a little star out of nowhere. I think it was a sign and miracle that she was there. Had this happen several other times. Miracle think it was the Lord saying 'I have them.'
