In this podcast, Kara had the opportunity to interview a man who reframed her story as a youth, her youth minister Ken Grant. While Kara was a teenager in the 90s when youth groups were all the rage and the purity movement was in full swing, she considers herself lucky. Though she was influenced by the purity culture, she never got the message from her youth minister that she needed to be demure. Instead, he encouraged her to lead and use her voice. This was the first time Kara has spoken to Ken since she was 18 and was able to express to him what he meant to her. Listen as they discuss topics including leadership, what Christianity is today, social media, race and white privilege. Ken spent time teaching religion in high schools and universities, and has worked full time as a dad and in youth ministry. Ken was born and raised in small-town southeast Wisconsin, the sixth of seven children. After graduating from Ripon College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg where Ken met and married his wife Denise. Through moves to North Dakota, Michigan, Indiana, Texas and back to Michigan, Ken and Denise raised their family and served in the church. Ken has his PhD from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in History, served as a supply pastor, and in 2020 became an ordained pastor for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and works as the head pastor at Genesis Lutheran Church in Detroit, MI.
Ordinarily Sarah by Sarah Elizabeth RoseStrange incantations, death threats, curses, a towering dragon, a hidden garden located in a sea of burnt ashes, soul-grabbing owls with talons razor sharp, a secret world of dark-winged creatures tearing at the sky, and a screeching Prince ordering the dark-winged creatures to kill and destroy . . .This is the strange new world that ordinary Sarah, wife and mother, homemaker, school teacher, and part time children's pastor, finds herself in on a cold winter day after her young adult daughter called to say that she could no longer be a part of Sarah's life—ever. How will Sarah exist in her new world? Dr. Sam Eatherton of Concordia Seminary The post 2252. Lutheran School, Lutheran Identity and Lutheran Mission – Dr. Sam Eatherton, 8/12/24 first appeared on Issues, Etc..
Inspired by the August issue of The Lutheran Witness on education, Rachel's asking a (really) Big Question: How should I educate my kids? It's a quandary that arises regularly for many families, especially at this time of year — and rightly so. We love our kids and want them to be well equipped to take our places as leaders in the church, their families, and society at large. While the law of the land requires young people to receive at least a basic level of education in subjects like math, English, science, and social studies, Scripture also encourages parents to be intentional about raising their children “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” How can we as Lutherans navigate these often conflicting sets of priorities and choose the educational options that work best for each family? Getting vulnerable and sharing her own family's labyrinthine educational story, Rachel carefully examines the pros and cons associated with a variety of different schooling options and offers practical, Gospel-centered takeaways for anxious families. Queer-Affirming, Millennial & Gen Z Led. That's how Tree of Life Lutheran in Minneapolis describes themselves. Rev. Marissa Sotos shares what a faith community like this looks like. What happens when we let go of "the way it's always been done," and try something new? What happens when elders are led by youngers, and vice versa? What happens when we release the need for certainty and instead embrace a faith of doubt and curiosity?Listen to find out! About Rev. MarissaMarissa Sotos has been pastor and church planter at Tree of Life Lutheran since 2016. She loves the energy and creativity of Northeast Minneapolis and getting to be part of this vibrant little community called Tree of Life.Marissa holds a Bachelor of Music in Harp Performance from St. Olaf College and a Master of Divinity from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. She is originally from Monrovia, CA where she grew up in a fundamentalist sect. After half a decade of atheism and flirting with Buddhism, she fell in love with the Lutheran church's focus on grace, care for neighbor, constant reformation and embrace of paradox. In addition to pastoring Tree, Marissa is the Liturgical Design Coordinator at Central Lutheran Church and is pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Liturgy from St. John's University. She and her wife Maggie enjoy reading, camping, crosswords and hanging out with their goofy German Shepherd, Xander.Connect with us!Sign up to receive a little Gospel in your inbox every Monday Morning with our weekly devotional.Check out our website for great resources, previous blog posts, and more.Get some Lady Preacher Podcast swag!Connect with us on Instagram and Facebook, or email us at revkelsey @ dancingpastor.org
