sent $$$ this week to Sac Punks With Lunch for rain relief.instagram.com/p/CXulg7Ko6Ur“Forecast shows that there is going to be lots of rain this week. We’re assembling to get tools and pallets for our neighbors to elevate their homes, to prevent them from flooding. We are fundraising for camp reinforcements before this weeks storm (platform making from the pallets we got with the uhaul @sacramento_soup and @sacramento.homeless.union helped us rent) to provide materials for a sleeping pad project @greatgreensea is doing. We are still needing some materials and lots of funds to get them! No help needed with building, but we may need some helpers to distribute! Please consider donating to our Venmo / Cashapp: @SacPWL and add "rain relief” to memo. Thank you @sacramento_soup and @sacramento.homeless.union for helping fund the uhaul rental, allowing us to collect about 40 pallets to distribute.“DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Personality Cult "Heart Attack” STMuch Band with Katie Weissman “Hot Cider” Much Quintet Vol. 1 and 2Violent Bloom “You Have to Say” Not Any ThingAmerican Nudism “Future 5-0” NEGATIVE SPACEVACATION “Taking Out The Trash” Mouth Sounds #2699Rob Magill “Rhythm and Roll is on the T.V., The Radio” Songs For Healthy Women Slash Sick BoysSharkmuffin “Receptionist” Gamma GardeningMARBLED EYE “Open Hand” LEISUREShannen Moser “Joanna” I’ll SingPlant Legs “Day Gloom” Plant MatterStop Clicking “Brain Right” First Banned on MarsThe Coltranes “Firefly” White HagAnther “Ready or Not” Ready or NotFuture star “honk honk” i went home and all i got pt 3Primo! “A City Stair” Primo Amicigenerifus “And of an Era” And of an EraMiserable “High” Loverboy / Dog DaysTracey Read “All the Wrong Shoes” Everything Is RealStiff Love “Out of Control” Attitudes/Out of ControlHuman People “Black Flowers” Butterflies Drink Turtle TearsData “Stupid Horse” Invisible WitnessesSonoda “go” karaoke lifeYoung Jesus “Bell” The Whole Thing Is Just There
In film, they call it the "meet cute" - the moment when two strangers lock eyes and ignite a cinematic classic. In music there isn't necessarily a name for a band's formation or meeting, but that instance can inform the group's music just as deeply. For Brooklyn's Sharkmuffin, their "meet cute" occurred July 4, 2012 at a beach house that was later destroyed by Hurricane Sandy - a possible reason why the band's music is visceral, explosive, sharp and a little dangerous. Tarra Thiessen (guitar, vocals, theremin, pocket piano) and Natalie Kirch (bass, vocals, claps) make up the core of the band, with frequently-rotating drummers. [Counting from their album artwork, an illustration of themselves and all of the drummers to have played with the group, they've employed 13.] One of these drummers was Death Valley Girls and Hole's Patty Schemel who recorded on their latest and first full-length LP, Chartreuse. The album has the punk attitude of the riot grrrl movement and the musicality of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It covers gritty and very real subjects: first dates, favorite colors, violent emotions felt on Mondays and even feminine products. Some songs might provoke laughter just from their titles, like "Tampons Are For Sluts" and "Mermaid Sex Slave," but Sharkmuffin is dead serious. Hear them perform their short slap-in-the-face songs live in-studio. Setlist "Chartreuse" "Mondays" "First Date"

Top story this week has to be the blackout that hit west Manhattan. Coming 42 years to the day after the 1977 blackout from last week's show, this year's power outage was much less dramatic and lasted only a few hours. ConEd CEO John McAvoy described the failure of both the primary and backup protection systems at a power substation at 64th Street and West End Avenue, leading to power outages once the system was interrupted by a subsequent substation at 49th Street. Although the blackout wasn't caused by a spike in electricity usage, the heat is still on in the city, with daily high temps in the 90s. In response, cooling centers have been opened across the city in senior centers, public housing, and public libraries. On July 18th, Mayor de Blasio signed a local state of emergency that calls on city government buildings and all office buildings over 100 feet tall to conserve energy and set their thermostats no lower than 78°. Temperatures are set to rise and humidity will increase, leading to heat indexes over 100° before rain arrives on July 22nd. You can do your part by turning off your air conditioner when leaving your home and using public transportation instead of driving, which will keep the air quality clear during the heat wave. If you'll be opening your windows to get some ventilation, you can install safety devices called vent locks for sash windows or metal clips for sliding windows that make sure windows can't be forced all the way open from the outside. 5 years ago on July 17, 2014 — Eric Garner dies after being put in a chokehold by NYPD officers 12 years ago on July 18, 2007 — A steam pipe explodes near Grand Central, sending debris flying and disrupting Midtown during evening rush hour 1 year ago on July 19, 2018 — A steam pipe explodes near the Flatiron Building, causing a large crater outside 141 Fifth Avenue Be aware of your surroundings during this time of year, as two of city's steam explosions have happened during just this week in history. It's the most wonderful time of the year! At least it is for avid music fans like us and anyone else attending the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. The annual endurance challenge gets underway this week, with thousands of bands from around the world — and many more fans — converging on the city for a seemingly endless bender of live performances — shows both big and small that last all day, every day, into the wee hours of the morning, with music pouring out of every club, restaurant, street corner and alleyway for miles. For this edition of All Songs Considered, we (Bob Boilen, Robin Hilton and Stephen Thompson) listened to songs by more than a thousand bands that'll be performing at SXSW, and picked some of their favorites from artists previously unknown to hear and see. We run through some of those favorites on this episode, including the sludgy noise rock of Sharkmuffin (we're not making that name up) to the sweet voice of singer-songwriter Chloe Foy, the Calypsonian and soca artist Nailah Blackman and much, much more. Full playlist (song names): 1. Dermot Kennedy "Moments Passed," 2. Sharkmuffin "Scully Is A Sharkmuffin," 3. Frankie Simone "War Paint," 4. Pale Waves "Heavenly," 5. Anna McClellan "Heart Of Hearts," 6. Alice Phoebe Lou "She," 7. WILD "All My Life," 8. Double Ferrari "Double Ferrari," 9. Chloe Foy "Flaws," 10. Nailah Blackman "O'Lawd Oye'," 11. Trupa Trupa "To Me," 12. Descartes A Kant "Motion Picture Dream Boy," 13. IDER "Body Love," 14. Dave B "Sweetest Thing," 15. Skyway Man "The Seer"
