New Year 2017 MMA ROUND-Up SPECIAL FLASHBACK 2017: Picture this wild ride if you were not there it was one hell of a year to be an MMA journalist traveling to events like the infamous New York Brooklyn Barclay Center where I rolled up and made a studio inside of the Starbucks conducting a live podcast where tons of MMA fans and customers surrounded me to see what was going on. Yet Ariel Helwani walks in an hour later and no one even notices? But I did especially his nasty-looking shoes! This was a significant event if I remember it was UFC 209 where Khabib was supposed to fight Tony Ferguson once again but was scraped and replaced with Al Iaquinta in Tony's place! THAT WASN'T THE TAKE AWAY if you remember.... nope I was there for the DOLLY INCIDENT AND CONOR BEING ARRESTED! I even got to take a replica photo right after he was taken out of the police station in handcuffs. Me and Chris from the MMA Holes (AKA MOS AND JESSY) I'll share the photo on my Twitter for everyone in this thread for the podcast link @XEVilEddieX . Also in 2017, we saw Bisping as our Middleweight Champion in the UFC when I told everyone he would knock Rockhold out...... I was told to try a different profession but now we know how that one ended don't we? The hype for Cris Cyborg inside the UFC was very much alive and terrifying as she was heading into a fight with who was also crowned one of the most dangerous women on the planet at the time in Holly Holm for UFC 219 to close out the year! OH AND DID I FORGET TO MENTION covering the Mayweather vs McGregor Presser that was also held at the BARCLAY Center in Brooklyn New York? Yeah, the one where Conor McGregor compared himself to a black man while wearing a giant white fur coat and throwing dollar bills everywhere and telling Mayweather and his two goons who looked like the dumb monsters from TMNT, to pick it up like "dancers". That PPV passed 4.3 million buys making it the biggest PPV of all time! We also saw Max Holloway defeat Showtime Pettis at Featherweight to become the INTERIM Featherweight Champion when the UFC Stripped McGregor for not immediately signing an agreement to defend the featherweight title making Jose Aldo the Champion Once Again until Max took that fight at UFC 212 where Max finished Aldo and then even went on to do a rematch at UFC 218 and beat him once again. This was also the year that Colby Covington became the loudmouth you all know him as today. When I interviewed him he was actually very nice and there was NO gimmick like there was in 2017 to now! In fact, he became one of the most hated men in the sport and a real target in Brazil when he lit the entire country on fire with just a few words I will not repeat on this show. I HOPE YOU GUYS ENJOY THESE FLASHBACK Episodes I'm uploading 1x a week for you and really hope you all are checking out the new show Combat Deviants. I promise there are about to be 2 shows that ill be filming per week come 2023! The plans are Monday nights at 7:06 pm (6:66pm ET) I'll be going live on the Pure EVil MMA Youtube channel ( Youtube.com/PureEVilMMA) for a recap of the fights and to deliver the TOP 3 HEADLINES OF THE WEEK and any announcements like fights that have been signed or tweets of the week etc. Then on Thursdays ill be doing specials that will be fan-interactive like reaction videos/watch along with MMA-related content or older fights or even event and movies with fighters in them. Then Fridays at 9 pm ET Combat Deviants go live for BellyUpSports.Com and we always have 2 well-known guests joining us every single week from the UFC and BKFC! We are only on episode 12 as of tonight so get ready for an insane 2023 where you can become a part of the weekly Deviant Tribe by leaving comments that appear on screen for everyone to see! Happy Thanksgiving... WELL, THE DAY AFTER I SHOULD SAY! SMOKE UP AND ROLL OUT GREMLINS! White Knuckles till the end... BEHAVE YOURSELVES! Learn more about your ad choices. The guys begin with a long recap of March Madness, and what Saint Peter's Cinderella run means to Jersey City. They also discuss all things NBA and NFL, including Kyrie Irving's return to Barclay Center, which leads into a deep dive from Ryan about his theories on the Yankees' impact on New York politics. They discuss NFL trades and signees, and Colin Kaepernick's recent interest in rejoining an NFL team. They rate upcoming music festival lineups, which oddly turns into a conversation about naming children. Towards the halfway point, Ryan speaks on how his love and passion for hip hop radio and his father lead him to starting the pod. Ryan and Rayan finish with upcoming news for the Freshly Baked series, and Emma leads a heartfelt discussion on lessons they've learned from their ex's.Follow the Pod on Instagram: @freshlybakedpodHosts: @ryanyee55 @bribinghaam @erinroddy @rayanuddinNot Featured: @lizziegordonn @joe.degeorgeo @benjaminricee @marcmeup @jackiekranFeaturing: @emmatartini_Mixed and Mastered by @elijah.shapiro

On the first podcast of the season, Matt and Michael talked about how this team had a high ceiling, but also a low floor. Significant time missed by any of the trio of Malik Osborne, Anthony Polite, or RayQuan Evans would make the NCAA dream difficult to achieve. Well, it got worse than that. But the team easily could have folded after losing six straight with so many players out. Instead, the flashed their resiliency by winning four of the final six, and finishing on a three-game win streak. Now they just need to win four straight this week... Senior day was an unabashed success. Anthony Polite, RayQuan Evans, Wyatt Wilkes, Tanor Ngom, and Harrison Prieto all played key minutes. Even Justin Lindner got in on the fun with his second career start. And FSU handled a tired NC State team just the way you want to see - a nice, comfy win with little stress. Prior to that, the Seminoles played a nail-biter against Mike Brey's Notre Dame squad, a game which saw the return of Anthony Polite. Now the 'Noles head to the Barclay Center for the ACC Tournament. First up: Syracuse, who FSU split games with this season. If they get through that, then it's a 2nd round matchup with top-seed Duke, who are coming off a big loss to North Carolina to end their regular season. After discussing the real games, we dive into the winning culture coming in next season in the form of a recruiting class filled with guys used to winning. Chandler Jackson just led his team to an undefeated season, finishing with the AA state title in Tennessee. And Tom House's team hasn't lost in a couple years. Michael Cerbelli is the very definition of international events. For over 43 years, Michael has done more than change the paradigm of prestigious happenings – Michael has become the paradigm. If you have been one of the fortunate invitees to a Cerbelli creation, you know who he is. But more importantly, you have experienced first-hand Michael's breathtaking creativity and mad technical expertise. His success is the result of more than just his mind-blowing concepts, it's also because his events go off with a military – yet transparent – precision. Though a fixture in the New York City events scene, Michael's influence is worldwide; from the Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to a birthday party for the King of Morocco, to a signature event at the palace of Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg, Russia, Cerbelli Creative's events are legendary.Michael's recent multi-million-dollar ‘Brooklyn Bar-Mitzvah' at the Barclay Center grabbed the attention of the worldwide press from CNN to the BBC. Still, Michael's passion is to do more than create incredible experiences. He would much rather be ‘giving back' to the event community than fielding calls from the press. Michael's heart is expressed through his wildly-successful, “Michael Cerbelli's: The Hot List™” events. With “The Hot List™,” Michael works to inspire producers throughout the industry, reveal the latest trends, and fill their creative toolbox with the latest event resources. In 2019 Michael was inducted into the event industry Hall of Fame by BizBash a respected multi-million readership for his decades of experience working in event design and production, meetings, hospitality and sponsorships, corporate events, rentals, and more. Connect with Michael Cerbelli:Website: https://www.cerbellicreative.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelcerbelliFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/cerbellicreative/?ref=hlTwitter: https://twitter.com/teamcerbelli?lang=en

Top story this week has to be the blackout that hit west Manhattan. Coming 42 years to the day after the 1977 blackout from last week's show, this year's power outage was much less dramatic and lasted only a few hours. ConEd CEO John McAvoy described the failure of both the primary and backup protection systems at a power substation at 64th Street and West End Avenue, leading to power outages once the system was interrupted by a subsequent substation at 49th Street. Although the blackout wasn't caused by a spike in electricity usage, the heat is still on in the city, with daily high temps in the 90s. In response, cooling centers have been opened across the city in senior centers, public housing, and public libraries. On July 18th, Mayor de Blasio signed a local state of emergency that calls on city government buildings and all office buildings over 100 feet tall to conserve energy and set their thermostats no lower than 78°. Temperatures are set to rise and humidity will increase, leading to heat indexes over 100° before rain arrives on July 22nd. You can do your part by turning off your air conditioner when leaving your home and using public transportation instead of driving, which will keep the air quality clear during the heat wave. If you'll be opening your windows to get some ventilation, you can install safety devices called vent locks for sash windows or metal clips for sliding windows that make sure windows can't be forced all the way open from the outside. 5 years ago on July 17, 2014 — Eric Garner dies after being put in a chokehold by NYPD officers 12 years ago on July 18, 2007 — A steam pipe explodes near Grand Central, sending debris flying and disrupting Midtown during evening rush hour 1 year ago on July 19, 2018 — A steam pipe explodes near the Flatiron Building, causing a large crater outside 141 Fifth Avenue Be aware of your surroundings during this time of year, as two of city's steam explosions have happened during just this week in history. For February's Black History Month we are featuring 4 amazing African-American women. This week's guest is Melissa McMillan, a singer/songwriter, who knew since she was a child exactly what she wanted to do: be a singer. Her clear desire to pursue music led her from high school bands to study jazz vocals with Rosana Eckert at University of North Texas (UNT), where she was encouraged to match her natural talent with her musicianship. UNT is where I met Melissa, she was a classmate of my daughter Julia, and they performed their senior recital together (Melissa on vocals, Julia on bass).

Melissa describes her experience of moving from Texas to NYC, her work with Warby-Parker, singing with wedding bands and writing her original music. She completed her first CD a couple of years ago and is in the process of releasing her second one. Melissa has co-written songs with Brian Donohoe (“On your Own”) as well as Ross Pederson (“Glow”). She has performed at Sofar Sounds Concerts, numerous clubs throughout NYC, toured the US, sang the national anthem at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn and most recently performed at the Grammys at Madison Square Garden in NYC as a member of the resistance revival choir, backing up Kesha.

Melissa was born in England (her mother is British, her father American), spent her early childhood in Albuquerque, NM, before moving to Texas for high school. She shares her experience of being bi-racial and how that ignited her involvement in social justice causes like Black Lives Matter and women's rights. Sam Schwartz is known worldwide as Gridlock Sam, a nickname the media gave him for his role in drawing up ways to navigate the congested corners of New York City. He designed the traffic patterns around the Barclay Center in Brooklyn the streets around The World Trade Center, and engineered traffic circles in Aruba. Schwartz started his life in traffic as a cab driver in Brooklyn, dodging the other yellow cabs before landing a job in city government, eventually becoming New York City’s traffic commissioner. At first he thought he would become a physicist like his brother, but realized that he would never be happy or make much of a life for himself in laboratories. “I liked parties, I liked girls, I was a city kid,” he said in a February, 2015 interview on Conversations with Allan Wolper. But he liked math, science and uban life, which led him to city government, and these days to a column in the Daily News in New York City, covering traffic.

ROAD TRIP!! Today we’re going to change it up a little bit. Myself and my two brothers Brian and Brady recently went to New York to watch the Big East and ACC men’s basketball championships. The Big East tourney was played at Madison Square Garden and the ACC tournament was at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn. Our trip went from Wednesday to Sunday and we managed to squeeze in 10 fantastic games. This podcast episode is going to talk about two things – we’re going to discuss our trip, obviously but we’re going to do it in a way that also answers some Twitter questions we’ve received. Luckily for us some of the questions related directly to the scenarios we saw in the 10 games. And we talk about a possible Duke spy! ------------------- Help us celebrate encouraging coaches - nominate someone who deserves recognition www.coachcallstimeout.com/stories. ------------------- Start your 7 day free trial with Coach Calls Timeout: www.coachcallstimeout.com/register/membership. State of Wonder will melt your winter blahs down to marshmallowy molten goodness with provocative dance projects, hot new fiction, and music for transformative times (with twirling rifles!).Tahni Holt’s Sensational Disorientation - 1:21When it comes to women, there are two things American culture doesn’t look so kindly on: age and weight. Portland choreographer Tahni Holt’s newest performance delights in both. “Sensation/Disorientation” runs at Reed College’s Diver Studio Theatre as part of White Bird’s Uncaged Series Jan. 18–22.Studio Session with Typhoon’s Kyle Morton - 7:19Kyle Morton is known for the soaring, lyrical songs he writes for his band, Typhoon. Now Morton has put out a solo record called “What Will Destroy You” that gives breath to his somber and contemplative style (not to mention incredible wit). David Byrne Taps Portlander Kelly Pratt For Star-Studded Color Guard Collaboration- 14:56Kelly Pratt, who has worked with everyone from Beirut to Cold Play, first collaborated with David Byrne when Byrne asked him to arrange horns and lead the band for Byrne's "Love This Giant" album and tour with St. Vincent. Then came an even more unusual request. Byrne had become fascinated with the distinctly American phenomenon of color guard, which involves dances using flags, sabers and wooden rifles generally set to marching band music. Byrne invited an incredible roster of musicians, including Nelly Furtado, former Beastie Boy Ad-Rock, How to Dress Well, tUnE-yArDs, and Nico Muhly with Ira Glass, to compose new songs and play them live at Brooklyn's Barclay Center, soundtracking the nation's best winter guard teams. Pratt did all the horn and string arrangements. They filmed it all for a documentary-concert film hybrid called "Contemporary Color" that is playing during the Northwest Film Center’s Reel Music Film Fest on Jan. 21, and will open nationally in March.New Novel from Jon Raymond: Freebird - 21:21The erudite warmth of writer Jon Raymond’s work has spanned screenplays, arts criticism, and fiction. His new novel, “Freebird,” focuses on three generations of a family struggling with the horrors of war, teenage angst, and living with the legacy of a father who survived the Holocaust. Desert Rain: Meeting the Living Building Challenge - 28:51Can a house be more than a place to live? Can it be a demonstration of our highest aspirations? Our columnist-in-residence, Randy Gragg, introduces us to Tom Elliott and Barbara Scott of Bend. Their house, Desert Rain, was made to meet certification of the Living Building Challenge using the highest standards for energy efficiency, power generation, water systems management, and more. Pander Brothers Re-Imagine “XXX” as “The Dissident” - 36:44Jacob and Arnold Pander’s kinetic comic books panels are full of exciting contrasts, with doses of film noir and pop art sensibility. Last year they Kickstarted a project to revive one of their most famous comics titles: a tech thriller about an American journalist on the lam in a futuristic version of Amsterdam, after civil society in the U.S. goes into freefall. The story was published by Dark Horse Comics as “XXX,” and the Pander Brothers are re-releasing it online as “The Dissident” — with an extended prequel. Two Choreographers Make Traditional Dance Contemporary - 43:05Two remarkable choreographers come together next weekend to show new contemporary dance works. They’re from radically different traditions, but each embraces a marriage of traditional and modern forms. Subashini Ganesan’s “Bliss And Other Easy Things” and Oluyinka Akinjiola’s “IBUKUN: The Celebration,” running together as "Ignite" Jan. 20–22, were developed through Ganesan’s New Expressive Works Residency, housed in the space she runs at Studio2.

We've got focus.  We overcame adversity.  We ran our race. We don't have a medal to show for it, but we got awesome stamps in our passports and didn't run into a single mosquito. Read Lian's complete post-Rio Random thoughts here. On the podcast, we talk about our big nights with Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, Jenny Simpson, Maya DiRado, Michelle Carter, Lily King, Brazil soccer, Simone Manuel. We were at the Aquatics Center, the Estadio Olympic, Maracana and USA House.  Lian's husband even had his own moment with Ryan Lochte. Much like Ryan, Liz has an apology she would like to make to a community she may have offended.  Lian awards her own gold medals. We also have a few lingering questions for our friends in Brazil.  But most of all, we want to say thank you to the Olympians, the families and coaches of Olympians and our hosts in Brazil who gave is beautiful, memorable sporting competitions on one of the world's most beautiful cities.
