Doch was zeichnet New Adult genau aus?
We've briefly touched on geek rock in the past - Weezer and Laeto spring to mind - but never in any detail. That all changes this week as we look at the genre through the lens of The Protomen. We also chat extensively about the band, their discography and their frankly brilliant homage to 80s rock.
What do you get when you cross Streets of Fire and Meatloaf? An almost indescribable melange of operatic rock, 80's synth movie soundtracks and dystopian sci-fi future world-building. ALMOST INDESCRIBABLE... cause we go on for over an hour about it but there's a LOT to unpack. Check it out!
*** We apologize for a few technical mishaps with this episode *** The Devin retrieval arc is OVER and we come back swinging! An episode that was inevitable if you know anything about Amber or Devin.

In the words of the legendary Terry Pratchett, in the Discworld novel The Truth:“A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth has had a chance to get its boots on.”Or from one of my favorite bands, The Protomen in their song, “The Hounds”:“When I say he was a monsterWhen I set fire to his nameIt does not matter where you hear it fromWhether truth or lies, it gets said all the sameBecome a ReConsider Patron…Whatever's on the table plays!”Volume biasI've been on a kick recently about a propensity for us to misunderstand or misrepresent people who aren't in our tribe. And how BS gets amplified. In “How to casually radicalize a citizen,” we talked about how people with less-than-awesome intent can easily (and do) create a stream of the worst of the opposition. You can see this and then get a bit radicalized yourself, as we see.But this is happening passively, too. I call it VOLUME BIAS.Shout-out to...Bob NelsonClint LohseElianTheWitchDXXXVIIISUMMARY:-More partisan positions tend to be simpler-Simpler is easier to digest, shorter to say than more nuanced positions-Easier to repeat, too-You'll hear them more often-They naturally get more opportunities to make their massage heardHow I think volume bias works among regular people:More partisan people are both more certain and more passionate about their certainty, because less partisan people are more prone to have nuance and remaining questionsSo partisan people can…State a clearer positionState a shorter positionSay it with deep conviction that less partisan ones can'tMore partisan folks are more likely to attack others, as well, meaning the less partisan folks often get intimidated out of the conversation, tooLess partisan folks are indeed having conversations, but quiet ones - in the kitchen. I'm one of the folks they confess to, all over the political spectrum. They feel they've lost touch with their own party (or vice versa)This becomes a self-reinforcing cycleHow volume bias seems to work in the media and electionsNuance is harder to understand than the more loud/short/simple positionsAnd so, the nuanced stuff will literally be forgotten, it won't catch our attention nearly as muchWe're largely consuming media differently -- getting more individual bits about more things going on in the world, but with less time and focus for each individual thingSo even where the news / politicians are playing more nuanced stuff, you just don't hear it nearly as well, don't digest and retain it nearly as well…...especially if you are not consuming long-form articlesThe resultThere is a bias in what we're exposed to - higher volume stuff is shared moreThere is a bias in what we digest and remember - it's like we have a high-pass filter for anything that's not loud/simple enoughSo we only really get very loud versions of what our team believes and what the other team believes…...these loud versions are the most partisan, certain, and simpleThrough highly repeated exposure we start to lose our own ability to remember that there can be nuance in our own team's positions, much less the other team'sExamples:The vaccine itself - how it works, why it's safeTrump's great at it: “I'm gonna build a big, beautiful wall” “I'll end the ISIS war in 100 days”The fact that both of these were ridiculous took more time to explain, so it was harder to convince people“The election was stolen”INITIATIVEIs huge.Generally accusations and affirmative positions, once stated, if they are attractive, require far, far more energy to refute than they were to spread in the first place. Volume Bias Likely Helped Trump Get ElectedTrump predicted news ratings would take a hit when he was no longer presidentHe was rightThe guy was very loud, and people listened whether they loved or hated him(The fact that news ratings dropped without him is a key case study - it's our own reading/listening behaviors that drive the volume bias)Trump not only got a lot of free airtime…...but the typical “sparring debate” cable news shows had a democrat and a pro-Trump republican because having agreement is not loudu and therefore BORINGHow was this prevented in the past? Are we doomed?Demagogues did pop up! And, lo and behold, they had very simple messages that could be repeated easily. Greece and Rome, 20th century Europe, etc, all come to mind. There is always space in a fairly free society for Charlatans.HOWEVER, the big thing in parts of the past was clearinghouse that had the technological and economic power to constrain what got volume, and the incentives to do so.And generally I think there is a trend of technology between fracturing and consolidation of power over messaging volume. We are in an incredibly fractured state now. I gave a few talks at MIT's Enterprise Forum about just this, and in making this episode I just now decided to go get those onto the podcast for y'all, so stay tunedSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/reconsiderpodcast. Your Man Alex Smith is a Brisbane based independent singer songwriter with a theatrical twist. He studied at QUT and is an incredible story teller and performer which comes out in his live performances and his on screen acting with very creative music videos. Heartbreak, disapointment, depression and hardship have been the tools to shape this hard working artist into the man he is today. He says "blood sweat and tears" went into the making of his last album and continues to navigate a new covid world for the performing arts and has seen many friends go on to do amazing things within the industry. Using catchy hooks to sneak contemplative lyrics to the listener, Alex's genre-hopping theatrical rock is a story-driven experience with a lot of heart. While Alex is inspired by bands like Queen, Meat Loaf, Pink Floyd and The Protomen, his sound is often compared to the likes of They Might Be Giants and Ben Folds. Alex pays huge thanks to members of his Patreon, a service which greatly strengthens his connection with his audience and boosts the rate of production of his third studio release ‘Slow Burn' which is set to release June 18th Alex is also the host of podcast My Songs Suck with his close friend James Kehoe. Way back in 1987, Capcom released a video game called Mega Man. A year later they released a GOOD video game called Mega Man 2, and the rest is history. We're here today to talk about one of the many bands inspired by this franchise, The Protomen. What the hell does this have to do with juggalo music? How did Schmeev forget to talk about beloved hype man Kilroy, who plays a sledgehammer on stage? Why are we skipping Act I? Find out as Schmeev drags Mike along for Act II - The Father of Death. Hit us up at JuggaloJudgment@gmail.com, @JuggaloJudgment on Twitter/Instagram, Juggalo Judgment on Facebook, or get at one of us directly on Twitter @MikeSpohnTheSEJ and @Schmeev, OR hit up Mike on Instagram @StraightEdgeJuggalo. We'd love to hear your feedback, let us know what you think!

In this Solo'd episode of Michael's Mixdown, I quickly break down two versions of In The Air Tonight, the first being the original, and the other being a cover version by The Protomen. I talk about how Phil Collins went from being the drummer of Genesis, to being an incredibly successful solo artist. I also talk about the differences between the two songs, and what I like about the cover that they changed. Top story this week has to be the blackout that hit west Manhattan. Coming 42 years to the day after the 1977 blackout from last week's show, this year's power outage was much less dramatic and lasted only a few hours. ConEd CEO John McAvoy described the failure of both the primary and backup protection systems at a power substation at 64th Street and West End Avenue, leading to power outages once the system was interrupted by a subsequent substation at 49th Street. Although the blackout wasn't caused by a spike in electricity usage, the heat is still on in the city, with daily high temps in the 90s. In response, cooling centers have been opened across the city in senior centers, public housing, and public libraries. On July 18th, Mayor de Blasio signed a local state of emergency that calls on city government buildings and all office buildings over 100 feet tall to conserve energy and set their thermostats no lower than 78°. Temperatures are set to rise and humidity will increase, leading to heat indexes over 100° before rain arrives on July 22nd. You can do your part by turning off your air conditioner when leaving your home and using public transportation instead of driving, which will keep the air quality clear during the heat wave. If you'll be opening your windows to get some ventilation, you can install safety devices called vent locks for sash windows or metal clips for sliding windows that make sure windows can't be forced all the way open from the outside. 5 years ago on July 17, 2014 — Eric Garner dies after being put in a chokehold by NYPD officers 12 years ago on July 18, 2007 — A steam pipe explodes near Grand Central, sending debris flying and disrupting Midtown during evening rush hour 1 year ago on July 19, 2018 — A steam pipe explodes near the Flatiron Building, causing a large crater outside 141 Fifth Avenue Be aware of your surroundings during this time of year, as two of city's steam explosions have happened during just this week in history. A few weeks ago the dorks all gathered at Brian's house to play some Magic! And since we weren't able to record this week for various reasons, you get to hear it now. Yay! On this episode we began with a game of Commander Planechase. It went for just about an hour and was a fun and (relatively) fast game! After that, we decided to just say screw it and do another one. But this time Brian had the idea that we should each pick a deck built by someone else! So Brian & Chewie swapped decks, Mike & Dirk traded, and we went at it with an unfamiliar deck. This game was slightly more epic in length (about 2 hours) but I don't remember it dragging or anything like that. So strap in and enjoy a bunch of dorks playing Magic, picking on each other, giggling incessantly, and just having a good time. This is our first live episode with the new microphone, and I really think it turned out well. Let us know what you think! This episode begins with Brian and Mike regaling us with the tale of their adventures in the blighted, frozen wasteland of Atlanta. They went to GP Atlanta, in case you didn't know. Between the main event, side events, meeting some of you guys, and the prize wall they've got plenty to tell! Sealed, Draft, Commander, and even Legacy all come into play! After that we're doing a segment we haven't seen in a good long while. It has gone by many names, but this time we're simply calling it a Flavor Fight! The Random Card button in Gatherer gave us 8 rare non-legendary contestants, and we pitch them against each other in a single elimination tournament! We're ignoring card stats and going right to the art and flavor of the card to determine the winner! These are always a lot of fun, so let us know what you think! The dorks begin this episode by telling you all about how awesome Conspiracy draft is. And it is. Like a lot. Seriously, go do some Conspiracy drafting, it's SO much fun! But after that, we decided to do something silly. We've done it before with video games and again with television shows, so it's time we do it again. We're taking a look at movies and imagining what kinds of Magic cards we could get out of them. With everything from Wizard of Oz to the Princess Bride to slasher movies to action movies, we're covering a lot of stuff. And we're even staying away from most of the really obvious fantasy franchises like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and the like, just to make it more interesting. Let us know what we missed! It's been a long time since the four of us actually recorded an episode, so we've got a lot of ground to cover on this one. First off, we have to apologize for the sound quality of the last episode. And we know we screwed up how Vorel of the Hull Clade works. Our bad. We're allowed one major screw up every couple years, right? Then Mike tells us about some drafting he's been doing. After that there's a mess of news type stuff (the links are down there a little further of course). Then we sorta screw around a bit, sharing some random non-Magic nonsense until the musical break. After that, it's time for the good stuff. As if you didn't know from the ridiculous title, this episode continues the Old vs. New: Ravnica Guilds with the Gruul Clans! The discussions here were really good, and this might be our all-around closest Guild OVN yet. Holy crap. No really, this was a great one. Hope you guys enjoy! Links! Mike and Brian kick off the episode by telling us all about the SCG Classic they went to last weekend. Brian played a green-red deck, while Mike took his Maze's End construction. After that, Chewie joined them for a couple games of EDH. Then we spend a bit of time discussing the Commander 2013 card that was TEARING UP the top tables at the Legacy AND Vintage Champs. How completely random. Then, because we are Dirkless, we can't do an Old vs. New for any of the guilds left that have green in them. Or blue. So we took to Boros! We compare crap with awesome, amazing with fantastic, decent with okay, and pretty good with also pretty good. Who won? We don't remember, so you'll have to listen to find out! Well, here it is. We've been at it virtually nonstop for six years. We started 300 (plus) episodes ago in November of 2007 and haven't looked back. And that's the reason for this episode! We've actually never looked back, and that's ridiculous. So this episode is all about the past. It starts with a look back at the various firsts and notable things we've done, be it segments or popular episodes or whatever. Then we've got to discuss all the various and sundry guests we've had on the show over the years (yes, all of them). Almost a full third of our episodes have involved a guest host of some sort after all. We finish it all up with the first actual look at our annual bizarre reality-twisting episodes. We hope you guys enjoy this. It's pretty light on Magic content, but it's loaded with plenty of fan service, nostalgia, and nonsense. Thanks for everything! This is one crazy episode we've got here for you, folks! New Phyrexia has been completely spoiled, and we decided to have fun with it this time. To that end, everything in this episode is a look at the new set, no exceptions (except for all the tangents, of course). I mean it, we had no other topics this time around, nothing else we wanted to talk about, not even listener mail! New Phyrexia is serious business, much like the internet. And when Brian steps away for a few minutes on baby business, I bring in the heavy hitters. We're joined by a pair of old friends (podcast whores) to look over all this new stuff. First off, joining us for a short while from his car, we have Eric of Many Names. Rubber pants are optional, of course. Then we're joined by none other than our favorite Ben Shout-Out recipient...Ben! Known as Panahinuva on forums all across the internet, he had a class let out early and was able to join us for the second half of the show.So yes, we're just crawling with dorks. It was really a stupid amount of fun having these guys on the show to talk about the compleation of Mirrodin, you guys are gonna enjoy it! Find out which card makes Mike want to go lie down for a while, causes Brian to wish suicide on his opponent, and forces Dirk to consider rage-quitting. Also find out which card has flavor implications that had me laughing uncontrollably for a long time. I blame Ben and his roommate, personally.New Phyrexia Visual Spoiler:http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/articl ... a/spoiler#Oh, and just because I forgot to mention it this episode, don't forget that we still have lotsa free stuff to give away for random reasons. We are living in an age of villains. In case you haven't noticed, the bad guys are winning. The Eldrazi are free. Nicol Bolas is still scheming. And now, the Phyrexians have taken over the plane formerly known as Mirrodin. During these dark times, who do we turn to for hope? The planeswalkers? Bah. Since this new breed of 'walkers came to light, the heroes haven't had much in the way of victory. Dark times indeed. To combat this, today we will remember the heroes of yore. The ones who fought against, and triumphed over, the evils that now beset us daily. Powerful planeswalkers, mere humans, and even artificial beings that we used to look to when things were at their darkest. Perhaps this discussion will inspire a new hero to step forth and save us. Is there a man among you here? Is there not one who values courage over life?Whoa, I sort of went off the deep end there. And did I quote some Protomen there at the end? That's the song featured in this episode, how appropriate. Huh, I need to start sleeping more. Right then, back to the episode. We also have a brief discussion about the new Wizards event scheduling, particularly how it relates to a certain other high-level tournament series. Then we've got the New Phyrexia preview cards that have been spoiled! Yay! There aren't many, but see which one had Dirk quite literally flustered. Also, I used the word "eidetic" during this episode. Welcome to a very special episode of The Mana Pool, featuring a brand new guest host - Ralph the Guest Hosting Cricket! He's a new addition to the show, and hopefully he'll be EATEN BY A F@#$ING GECKO soon. Other than that, we've got a whole host of fun stuff to go over. There's an exceptionally long listener Mad Lib to do first. Then we've got a small rant about some EDH/Commander at a local card shop. Then there's an entirely different small rant about the supposed balance of Duel Decks: Knights vs. Dragons. We couldn't find it! Then there's the main topic, which is another edition of the Mortal Guilty Edge Fighter Champion Tag Shodown, or whatever the hell it's called. As always, this was entirely too much fun. Spoiler alert: At least this time a green rare didn't win! And finally, we're going to throw out our own unique perspectives on the Ban Jace nonsense, as some guys who only sort of play Standard and have no personal stake in the debate either way. Just so everyone is aware, we started off this episode short one Brian. We spend the first half of the show going over our neglected listener emails, which we've been skipping over for the last several episodes. Guess who answered the most rules questions that were emailed to us? Bet you guessed wrong!Luckily after all this we were able to find a Bryan to fill the void in our show, so that's excellent. We talked about New Phyrexia and gave our general opinions about it, then stepped into a Story Circle with Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite. You may or may not want to ignore one color that we added in.After that, Dirk went to bed. That means we had no one there to keep throwing out profound statements, so we lost our heads. It just sort of degenerated into random conversations about whatever came to mind. It happens. Is that Eric on two episodes in a row with us? I think it is! Eric brought us two very deep and interesting topics to discuss. First off is a lot of talk about being casual, proxying, business models, and all sorts of nonsense. It essentially boils down to a discussion on realizing that there are other reasons to play this game than the one you hold most dear, and you should freakin' realize that.Follow Eric on Twitter - http://twitter.com/thewachmanAfter that, there's a long talk that actually outlasts two of the dorks (Brian Burrito and whatnot), and it's about threat selection in multiplayer. In the middle there it turns into a brief discussion on playing jerk generals in EDH, but I'm not entirely sure how that happened. Here's an article on Muse Vessel that Eric mentioned during this talk.http://musevessel.wordpress.com/2011/02/27/gbm7/And here's the infamous theory about the internet that I referenced at some point:http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/3/19/Of course, what episode would be complete without a Mad Lib? This one is from our old buddy Jars, and we agree that it was pretty brilliant, even though none of us read it first and we had to take a musical break in the middle of doing it. We also reveal the winners of the contest! If you heard your name on there and haven't contacted me, PLEASE DO! And we did a quick rundown of the new Duel Decks: Knights vs. Dragons, which you can find here:http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/673Intro Music - Diamond by Swift - http://www.swift-band.comTechnical Difficulty Music - Funeral for a Son by The Protomen - http://www.protomen.comBreak Music - Unrest in the House of Light by The Protomen - http://www.protomen.comNew website is live! - http://themanapool.comForum thread for this episode: http://cardshark.freeforums.org/episode-171-unrest-in-the-house-of-eric-t657.htmlCheck out our archive at http://themanapool.comJoin our Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/TheManaPoolEmail us at themanapool@cardshark.comFollow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/themanapoolCardshark Member Promotions: http://www.cardshark.com/Promotions/Member-Promotions.aspxSubscribe to our RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/themanapool
We are joined this episode by none other than the Many-Named One himself, Eric! Yay! Lots of news this episode, from new Commander cards to M12 Planeswalker news to Planeswalker news from the next big set. And we're on a new geeky network, and Swift is on iTunes! Man that was a lot. Of course Eric sidetracks us several times during all that. Otherwise it wouldn't be any fun at all.Don't forget to enter the contest before it's over on March 20! http://themanapool.com/pool-notices/update-mana-pool-mbs-contest/Follow Eric on Twitter - http://twitter.com/thewachmanM12 news:http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/665Innistrad:http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/666A.A.A. Network:http://www.aaanetwork.orgThen Eric hits us with his Searing Meditation deck, which sounds like a lot of fun. He got the set and didn't build a deck for roughly two and a half years, but I think it was worth the wait. Of course, somehow this leads into some random discussions about EDH...somehow. I'm not entirely sure how, really. Better listen to find out. From there, Brian takes us into the world of Mirrodin Besieged drafting, where he gives us a look at his first experience with it, which he claims was excellent. We shall soon see. From there the conversation turns to all kinds of nonsense, because Eric is here and he's entirely too much fun.Quick aside: The music for this episode is from The Protomen. It's Hope Rides Again, the first track from Act I, their first album. I've given you 3 bits of it in an attempt to get you hooked. They've taken the mythos of Mega Man and turned it into a badassed rock opera sort of thing, and it's seriously badassed.Intro Music - Diamond by Swift - http://www.swift-band.comBreak Music - Hope Rides Again by The Protomen - http://www.protomen.comNew website is live! - http://themanapool.comForum thread for this episode: http://cardshark.freeforums.org/episode-170-enchanted-evening-with-eric-t654.htmlCheck out our archive at http://themanapool.comJoin our Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/TheManaPoolEmail us at themanapool@cardshark.comFollow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/themanapoolCardshark Member Promotions: http://www.cardshark.com/Promotions/Member-Promotions.aspxSubscribe to our RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/themanapool
