Released in the shadow of her husband's death, Courtney Love and Hole delivered their sophomore album Live Through This in a tsunami of emotional turmoil. Propelled by three hit singles, the album would launch Love into stardom and influence a generation of visceral, outspoken musicians that took inspiration from songs about motherhood, abuse, postpartum depression, and other topics not found on Billboard 200 charting albums. In looking back almost thirty years, the layers of musicianship that might have been glossed over by the larger moment are revealed. Guitarist Eric Erlandson's shifts between vitriolic riffing and crunchy leads to subtle and understated without missing a beat. Speaking of beats, drummer Patty Schemel shines, adding controlled bombast that, paired with bassist Kristen Pfaff, gives the album a tightness without feeling stale or rote.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - Miss World 23:54 - Violet 36:38 - Credit in the Straight World 40:00 - Rock Star Outro - Doll Parts   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This is a podcast where we talk to guests about their favorite albums. Today we're talking with Kayleigh Goldsworthy. We talked about Hole's 1998 album, "Celebrity Skin." We also talked about being a hired gun, but learning to take time for yourself and make your own music. The conversation touches a lot on the 2011 documentary, "Hit So Hard," which centers around Hole's drummer Patty Schemel and the band surrounding the recording and fallout in her personal life. I can't stress how much you should watch the doc if you can get your hands on it. Kayleigh released her debut solo album, "Learning to Be Yourself," last year on Memory Music. A legend and all around wonderful person, Larry Schemel has been on the scene for over 30 years and has no intention of ever stopping. Brother of Patty Schemel, drummer of Hole, the Schemel's became of age during the mid to late 70s and saw the crucial punk/hardcore scene come out of the intensity of the Reagan era chaos of the early/mid 80s. It was completely mind boggling to travel through Schemel's outstanding memory of the late 70s rock god phenomenon, the 1980s righteousness and hardcore energy and into the 90s where he saw bands like Nirvana, Bratmobile and Earth come out from under the mist and into the stratosphere of finance and fantasy. History and cosmic hemisphere. Schemel has survived and thrived and his insight into music, culture, film (specifally horror) are nothing but inspiring and modivating. It was a pure joy speaking to the legend and really getting to know him through this in-depth interview and conversation between two people. Enjoy!

About P. David Ebersole: He is an award-winning independent filmmaker and television director working in both narrative and documentary.  His credits include the documentary HIT SO HARD (2012) about drummer Patty Schemel of the seminal grunge band Hole. Along with his husband and business partner Todd Hughes, he is Executive Producer and Director of several documentaries including the new, MY NAME IS LOPEZ (2021) about trailblazing Latino rock and roller Trini Lopez.  His debut novel, 99 Miles From LA, is a fast-paced, noir caper with a fresh twist. It has everything you want a crime story to have, including a bi-sexual love triangle and more double-crosses than Pulp Fiction!   In this episode, Mike and P. David discuss:  David's background as a filmmaker and making the transition to becoming a novelist How winning an award can change your life The author's motivation for making a documentary about Patty Schemel's life Palm Strings as the setting of 99 Miles from L.A.   Key Takeaways:  Winning an award can serve as validation that someone else appreciates what you're doing and believes you'll succeed. Validation is important for storytellers of all stripes. Choose a life story that deals with a person's struggles and how he overcomes them, or a societal issue. These are extremely relatable to the general public and have the potential to move people's hearts and minds. Being a part of a community and being immersed in its system, culture, and visual elements can inspire you to choose that location as the setting for your story. "Just do it…someone will always say something to you that will make you stop. So, the important thing is you've got to power through, you gotta get through, you got to get to the end, and then you can go back." – P. David Ebersole Connect with P. Her feature films include Night Blooms (starring Jessica Clement and Nick Stahl), a coming-of-age story set in the 1990s; and Play Your Gender, a documentary that pulls back the curtain on gender bias in the music industry, featuring interviews with Patty Schemel, Melissa Auf Der Maur, and Sara Quin. Drummers have different styles. Patty Schemel's drumming has always been tight and precise but she plays hard and heavy, big thick beats that powered songs like “Miss World” and “Violet”. Her substance use was also hard and heavy, keeping pace with or exceeding the consumption of her peers in the Seattle music scene of the 90's and of her band's leader and frontwoman, Courtney Love. It started with alcohol and worked up to heroin and crack. In our interview with Patty, she details her career ascent and her substance descent and she sheds light on substance dependency. Even though her band was headlining festivals, even though she had lost her close friend, Kurt Cobain, to drugs and suicide, even though her band's bassist, Kristen Pfaff, died of an overdose, she just kept using. And she kept using after being fired from the band and having 22 attempts at sobriety. But the 23rd time was the charm. Patty is sober, the author of the memoir Hit So Hard and subject of a documentary of the same name, and telling her story.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. In film, they call it the "meet cute" - the moment when two strangers lock eyes and ignite a cinematic classic. In music there isn't necessarily a name for a band's formation or meeting, but that instance can inform the group's music just as deeply. For Brooklyn's Sharkmuffin, their "meet cute" occurred July 4, 2012 at a beach house that was later destroyed by Hurricane Sandy - a possible reason why the band's music is visceral, explosive, sharp and a little dangerous. Tarra Thiessen (guitar, vocals, theremin, pocket piano) and Natalie Kirch (bass, vocals, claps) make up the core of the band, with frequently-rotating drummers. [Counting from their album artwork, an illustration of themselves and all of the drummers to have played with the group, they've employed 13.] One of these drummers was Death Valley Girls and Hole's Patty Schemel who recorded on their latest and first full-length LP, Chartreuse.  The album has the punk attitude of the riot grrrl movement and the musicality of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It covers gritty and very real subjects: first dates, favorite colors, violent emotions felt on Mondays and even feminine products. Some songs might provoke laughter just from their titles, like "Tampons Are For Sluts" and "Mermaid Sex Slave," but Sharkmuffin is dead serious. Hear them perform their short slap-in-the-face songs live in-studio.  Setlist "Chartreuse" "Mondays" "First Date"

Courtney Love's band Hole released their second album, Live Through This one week after the death of Kurt Cobain, Love's husband and front man for the grunge giant Nirvana.  Hole originated in the punk rock scene, but are often identified with the grunge movement due to Love's relationship with Cobain and their move to Washington to write this album. In addition to frontwoman Love, the band consisted of Eric Erlandson on lead guitar, Kristen Pfaff on bass, and Patty Schemel on drums.  Love and Erlandson wrote the songs, and Pfaff and Schemel were newcomers to the group, replacing bassist Jill Emery and drummer Caroline Rue who had left over creative differences. The album was noted for a toned-down and more melodic approach to things than their debut effort.  Themes of the album would revolve around aspects of Courtney Love's personal life, including relationships, motherhood, and post-partum depression.  A controversy that plagued the album was that much of the work was ghost-written by Kurt Cobain.  Band members and producers have consistently denied this, though it is perhaps understandable how a rumor like this would get legs, following on the heels of Cobain's suicide.  The only connection between Cobain and the album was that he sang backing vocals on a couple of songs when they were in the recording studio.  In fact, many of the tracks were performed during Hole's previous tour. While Live Through This is considered more melodic than their previous album, that is a relative measure - the album itself is still quite raw and gritty.  That didn't keep it from becoming a critical and popular success, going multi-platinum by December 1994.  Unfortunately, drummer Pfaff would not live to see this feat, having died of a heroin overdose in June, just before Hole was supposed to embark on a world tour.  Courtney Love would continue through several iterations of Hole, and pursue songwriting, acting, a writer of multiple manga volumes and a memoir. VioletThis song is the opening track for the album.  It was inspired by Love's relationship with Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, just prior to her relationship with Cobain.  Love said this song was "about a jerk, I hexed him, and made him lose his hair."  Miss WorldThe second track on the album was the first single.  It is about a person who is loved by everyone, but is empty inside and drowning in depression.  "I'm Miss World.  Somebody kill me."Asking For ItThis deeper cut is about rape.  Love talked about a time when she would stage dive, and found her clothes ripped off.  Love felt like she was raped by the audience.  Love's life and upbringing was a tumultuous one, with rebellion, drugs, and broken family relationships.Doll PartsThe second single from the album is likely the best known one.  It reflects her insecurity with Kurt Cobain.  Love and Cobain both went into rehab when Love was pregnant.  Unfortunately Cobain would run away from the rehab center shortly before his suicide. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from Space Ghost for “Space Ghost Coast to Coast”This comedy spoof of a late night talk show was the first original series produced by the Cartoon Network. STAFF PICKS:“Player's Ball” by OutKastBrian brings us Southern Rap from Atlanta's own OutKast.  The song discusses living in the south and living in the hip hop culture.  This is off OutKast's debut album entitled "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik."“Rocks” by Primal ScreamBruce's staff pick is off Primal Scream's fourth album "Give Out But Don't Give Up."  Bobby Gillespie and Jim Beattie originally formed this Scottish rock band with a psychedelic sound, but went more classic rock and blues with this album.“Found Out About You” by the Gin BlossomsRob's staff pick features the fourth single from the Gin Blossoms' second album, “New Miserable Experience.” The Gin Blossoms formed in Tempe Arizona in 1987, and were identified as alternative rock and “jangle pop.”  The name comes from a picture of W.C. Fields describing his ruddy complexion. “Because the Night” by 10,000 ManiacsWayne's pick features a cover originally performed by The Patti Smith Group from 1978.  Natalie Merchant fronts 10,000 Maniacs in an Unplugged version  of this classic written by Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “Bad Girls”This instrumental was the soundtrack from a western featuring Madeliene Stowe, Andie MacDowell, and Drew Barrymore.

Patty Schemel special talking about her life in music with David Eastaugh Patricia Schemel is an American drummer and musician who rose to prominence as the drummer of alternative rock band Hole from 1992 until 1998. Born in Los Angeles, Schemel was raised in rural Marysville, Washington, where she developed an interest in punk rock music as a teenager. She began drumming at age eleven, and while in high school, formed several bands with her brother, Larry. Schemel was recommended as a drummer to Hole frontwoman Courtney Love by her husband, Kurt Cobain, a friend of Schemel's. She formally joined the band in 1992, and performed on their critically acclaimed second album, Live Through This (1994). On the band's third release, Celebrity Skin (1998), Schemel was replaced by a session drummer after its producer, Michael Beinhorn, convinced Love that Schemel was unable to adequately perform during their recording sessions. Though she receives credit on the album, her drumming does not appear on the final tracks, and the event marked her departure from the band. For the band's subsequent tour, Schemel was replaced by Samantha Maloney. After leaving Hole, Schemel developed a significant crack cocaine addiction, and was homeless for a time. In the early 2000s, she became sober and reunited with Love, joining the short-lived group Bastard before drumming on Love's debut solo album, America's Sweetheart (2004). Schemel subsequently drummed for Juliette and the Licks, appearing on their EP ...Like a Bolt of Lightning (2004). In 2010, using concert and video diary footage from Hole's 1994–1995 Live Through This world tour, Schemel co-created Hit So Hard, a documentary chronicling her time in Hole, her overcoming substance abuse, as well her subsequent business operating a dog boarding business. In 2013, she joined the indie rock group Upset, formed by Ali Koehler, previously of Vivian Girls and Best Coast, and formed the band Death Valley Girls with her brother, Larry, the same year.

This episode the Rock N Roll Librarian Shelley Sorensen and C Swain review ‘Hit So Hard’ by original drummer for the 90’s grunge band, Hole. Patty Schemel's story begins with a childhood surrounded by the AA meetings her parents hosted in the family living room. Their divorce triggered her first forays into drinking at age twelve and dovetailed with her passion for punk rock and playing the drums. Patty's struggles with her sexuality further drove her notoriously hard playing, and by the late '80s she had focused that anger, confusion, and drive into regular gigs with well-regarded bands in Tacoma, Seattle, and Olympia, Washington. She met a pre-Nirvana Kurt Cobain at a Melvins show, and less than five years later, was living with him and his wife, Hole front-woman Courtney Love, at the height of his fame and on the cusp of hers. As the platinum-selling band's new drummer, Schemel contributed memorable, driving beats to hits like "Beautiful Son," "Violet," "Doll Parts," and "Miss World." But the band was plagued by tragedy and heroin addiction, and by the time Hole went on tour in support of their ironically titled and critically-acclaimed album ‘Live Through This’ in 1994, both Cobain and Hole bassist Kristen Pfaff had died at the age of 27 With surprising candor and wit, Schemel intimately documents the events surrounding her dramatic exit from the band in 1998 that led to a dark descent into a life of homelessness and crime on the streets of Los Angeles, and the difficult but rewarding path to lasting sobriety after more than twenty serious attempts to get clean. ‘Hit So Hard’ is a testament not only to the enduring power of the music Schemel helped create but an important document of the drug culture that threatened to destroy it. Our hosts also discuss the companion documentary film of the same name with previously unseen footage of Cobain and Love. This is some real rock n roll archaeology, so dig in with a listen and then tell us what you think! Patty Schemel became one of the first female drummers to make it big in the world of rock and was a sort-of second mother to Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain's daughter when she was little. She discusses this in Hit So Hard: A Memoir as well as discovering the allure of the drums; figuring out you're gay and determining who to tell and how to tell them; life as a homeless person in Los Angeles; and addiction and recovery, told in an unsparingly honest and heartbreakingly hopeful way (it took her 20+ tries to get clean). “Patty Schemel has lived a million lives and come out the other side. An amazing story, amazing book.”—Mark Lanegan, musician and author of I Am the Wolf “Often harrowing, frequently heartrending, and always insightful, Hit So Hard is far more than rock myth-making or a redemption story. In looking back unflinchingly at the literal highs and crushing lows of her life, Schemel's yielded a complex, compellingly readable memoir that possesses a truth and humanity few books of its kind ever truly capture.”—Bob Mehr, New York Times bestselling author of Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements

The show notes are as follows: The show is almost out of the teen years and hopefully knows what it wants to be when it grows up. There has been a learning curve/evolution going on, and I have come to the conclusion that doing a minimally edited, shoot-from-the-hip show is best for me. Doing my early thirty minute shows took about five hours or so, which I outline for you. I can't keep doing that, so I'm just recording straight through without editing unless something major happens. I discuss the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and how stupid they do things. They want to put bands in, but not all the members. For example, Nirvana's drummer from the "Bleach" era, Chad Channing, is not going to be in. Only the lineup from "Nevermind" has been invited. That's BS, because being the drummer for Nirvana was a lot harder in the "Bleach" days than in the "Nevermind" days. "Bleach" was raw music before the band was radio ready. I talk about flannel shirts and what my father and I called them, as well as some anecdotes about my exploratory journey to Seattle. I also talk about getting tattoos, which until recently were illegal to get in Oklahoma. When I was 18, I went to Wichita Falls and got a terrible tattoo. I tell some tattoo stories about good and bad decisions. I talk about the writing program, Scrivener, as well as the Word template I usually writer in. It's hard to write on an 8.5 x 11 virtual sheet of paper, because so many words fit on the page. Next, I talk about Patty Schemel, drummer for Hole and childhood friend of my ex-wife. There is a documentary about her on Netflix called, "Hits So Hard". She left Hole during the recording of "Celebrity Skin", mainly due to the jerk producer they had. She has conquered addiction and has a dog-walking business now. I talk about how Mark Lanegan almost threw the master tapes from his solo album in a lake.
