This new hustle became priority #1 and grew to the point that in 2019, Derrick decided to open an LLC and scale the up business. He did this by building a team of talented contractors that would upgrade the service offerings outside of audio editing and free up time for Derrick to work ON the company instead of IN the company. Hi everyone! Thanks for tuning-in today for a new episode of Entrepreneur Mindset-Reset, the place where entrepreneurs come to learn, feel connected and celebrate our progress. Today's guest, Derrick Michaud, talks a lot about the type of mindset it takes to be successful as an entrepreneur. We are so aligned in our approach to business, even though we have very different businesses. I am certain you're going to enjoy listening, and I suggest you take notes, as Derrick drops so much wisdom and shares so much value. Before we dive in to today's episode, I'd like to invite you to share your feedback on Apple or Spotify. Your rating and review help other entrepreneurs like you and me find us, and we all know how isolating it can feel “out here” on the Entrepreneurial Island, so help your friends and colleagues out by sharing, following us on Instagram, and writing a review.  I also want to remind our listeners who own private medical and integrative practices that we are hosting Roundtable peer learning opportunities where you can join me and an small group of your colleagues and contemporaries in talking about how to overcome the challenges of wearing multiple hats as owner, CEO, AND healthcare and wellness provider. If you are feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, have high staff turnover and a lot of unfinished business and operational tasks, you will want to join our next Roundtable discussion on Time Leadership. In these intimate virtual gatherings, you get to speak openly and confidentially to share ideas, information, and insights, and learn how to upgrade to high-impact, fulfilled CEO of your practice. Get more information about our next free Roundtable Meeting at tracycherpeski.com/medical-practices Now, let's get to the juicy stuff!  Today we're talking with the thoughtful and wise Derrick Michaud, Founder of Shelby Row Productions and host of Podlogix the Podcast. As they say, “Necessity is the mother of invention,” and Derrick's journey to entrepreneurship came out of necessity and his deep desire to spend more time with his daughter. As a touring musician, family life can be disrupted and it can be challenging to create a sense of normalcy, not to mention steady income. So Derrick made a decision, thought through what he already knew how to do, and after getting clients in the gig economy, learned quickly that maxing-out his own capacity would quickly lead him to burnout while also hitting an upper limit on his income potential.  You won't want to miss when he tells the story about how he fired one of his highest-paying clients, and how that built his confidence, cleared his mind and increased his team's appreciation of his principles and values as a business owner.  He shares how his engineer coined the phrase “scope creeper” and how they decided as a company to stay in their own zone of genius and learned to be ok with not being all things to all people.  Derrick's top 3 tips for success are: Shift from solo-entrepreneur to a bona fide business if you want to scale. You must think next-level.  Find your niche and keep narrowing. TRY IT - just start doing it. If you're rocking and rolling as a solo-entrepreneur, then hire someone to grow your team and business. This episode is chock-full of wisdom, and I know you're about to learn a ton, so grab a beverage or a snack (and something to write with) and settle-in to listen to Derrick and his amazing journey. Derrick discovered Upwork.com, a job posting platform for entrepreneurs in search of another side hustle. He quickly noticed a demand for podcast audio editing. After relentlessly proposing job openings, Derrick landed his first client in January 2018. This new hustle became priority #1 and grew to the point that in 2019, Derrick decided to open an LLC and scale the up business. He did this by building a team of talented contractors that would upgrade the service offerings outside of audio editing and free up time for Derrick to work ON the company instead of IN the company. The company grew exponentially. After two years of operation, Shelby Row Productions went from a solopreneur operation to a six-figure grossing company that employs 12 contractors and has served for over 100 podcasts to date. For more information, you can visit www.shelbyrowproductions.com Follow Derrick on Instagram - @srp_podcasting Derrick was a touring musician for over 15 years. Through that time Derrick was always in need of side hustles to pay the bills. Hosting trivia, driving for Uber, and independent auto appraising are just a few examples of side hustles. In search of another side hustle, Derrick discovered Upwork.com, a job posting platform for entrepreneurs. He quickly noticed a demand for podcast audio editing. Derrick Michaud, CEO & Founder of Shelby Row Productions joins Graham Brown in this episode of The Age of Audio. The Age of Audio is a series of conversations with thought leaders and changemakers in the world of audio. Podcasts, Radio, Social Audio, and Data are converging to create engaging and authentic content for a new generation of listeners. To get access to all the audio conversations and book content for Age of Audio, go to theageofaudio.com. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS: So a lot of people don't realize that because radio, especially now more than ever, is all programmed and everything needs to be exact. So when they break into a six minute commercial break, it needs to be exactly six minutes.  That's the essence of radio commercials ,is that writing, to be able to put all that information in a short amount of time is challenging. You always want to have what's called a bumper music. That's another big radio term as bumpers. You don't want to just go from talking straight into a commercial. You want to have that music that pads you in, transitions you out of the segment into a commercial. And then the back end of the commercial transitions you back into the next segment. If you're trying to promote your business through podcasting and within that networking while interviewing other people in your industry and you land a couple clients because of those people that you met. There's your monetary gain and the right people are getting it, and they're willing to throw some money at podcasting, even though you don't really have direct monetary gain from it. I have experienced this in the last two plus years now, three years now that I've been doing this, I've seen it firsthand. It's like a wildfire. You'd be amazed at how many people out there have budgets willing to spend for podcasting. It's remarkable. So there are some of these real independent artists that do manage to make it big, “make it big on their own”. That's the ultimate cause they own a hundred percent of their stuff where you have bands that still are in debt to their record labels after five albums.

Derrick Michaud is the founder and executive producer of a podcasting agency called Shelby Row Productions based out of the Memphis, Tennessee, area. Derrick had years of experience in radio and commercials and spent some time living in Tennessee and working as a musician, including several years touring as a bassist in a few different bands. He talks about how he, as is the custom with most musicians, needed to have additional work to make ends meet when he wasn't traveling; so he would negotiate with restaurant managers to wait tables when he was in town and would balance other side hustles and gig work on the side. Derrick eventually started looking for work that he could do from the road and discovered Upwork. This led to him supporting a few clients at a time with their podcast editing needs until he got to the point where he needed to hire additional people to support the number of clients he was getting in. In this episode, Derrick shares how he was able to go from working for multiple bands and filing up to nine 1099 forms in a year to switching everything in this past year to his podcasting company. He has a team of people working from across four time zones, and they now support podcasters all around the globe, starting with the process of designing and launching a podcast, generating the necessary art, as well as weekly audio and video editing, transcription, and writing show notes. Derrick is also the host of his own podcast about podcasting, Podlogix. Overall, he is primarily focused on the customer-facing aspect of his business and is offering a 15-minute call to anyone who is interested in learning more. Before the pandemic grounded him, Derrick enjoyed getting out to local coffee ships and said he actually started Shelby Row Productions from a local Panera restaurant, doing his editing with a good set of headphones. However, with the pandemic, he has been able to do the majority of his work from a corner in his bedroom, using a backdrop to hide his bed for his video meetings. He likes to get up and stretch and work from his bar-height table in the kitchen and spends a lot of time pacing around as he's thinking and working. Finding a few different spots around his apartment and getting out here and there to see other humans while he's working has helped him settle into the new lifestyle.
