Jackie Canterbury talks with Brittaney Drake about her work at The Pearl Remote Democratic High School in Seattle, Washington where she teaches about nature using a visual arts curriculum. Her teaching style follows the fundamentals of Dr. Art Pearl who developed the Democratic classroom in Eugene, Oregon. He inspired the words Democracy and Education. "His message was about the primacy of democracy, the fragility of it, the assaults against it, how far we are from a nation that truly cherishes it and practices it — and the essential role of public education in any chance for a healthy democracy in the future." The founder and director of the Seattle Democratic school is Dr. Robin Harwick who has served as a mentor to Brittaney. In this program we talk about the importance of using the democratic process as a backdrop to teaching about art and nature. Globally and as a nation, we are now realizing the fragility of democracy. In this program Brittaney discusses how she uses a visual arts curriculum, particularly bird illustration, as a way to teach about nature and science. Fun thing about the home run chains is that they cut both ways. Take any pitcher who pitched long enough, and they gave up home runs. Like, say, an unrepentant domestic abuser and cheater who happened to get 27 straight outs last night against the 21st century Cleveland Spiders, the team you may remember from yesterday's post about the 1899 Washington Senators finishing 35 games ahead of them, in next-to-last, also-went-out-of-business-after-the-season place. Congratulations or something. Baseball immortality.* Domingo Germán gave up his first home run to Yuli Gurriel, 7/2/17* Yuli Gurriel hit his first home run off Andrew Miller, 9/7/16* Andrew Miller gave up his first home run to David Wright, 6/10/17* David Wright hit his first home run off John Patterson, 7/26/04* John Patterson gave up his first home run to Tom Lampkin, 7/20/02* Tom Lampkin hit his first home run off Mike Scott, 7/28/90* Mike Scott gave up his first home run to Bill Fahey, 5/13/79* Bill Fahey hit his first home run off Roger Nelson, 9/4/72* Roger Nelson gave up his first home run to Tony Horton, 9/22/67* Tony Horton hit his first home run off Fred Talbot, 8/8/64* Fred Talbot gave up his first home run to Luis Aparicio, 6/11/64* Luis Aparicio hit his first home run off Tommy Lasorda, 5/28/56* Tommy Lasorda gave up his first home run to Bill Sarni, 8/5/54* Bill Sarni hit his first home run off Bob Miller, 6/6/54* Bob Miller gave up his first home run to Hank Thompson, 5/14/50* Hank Thompson hit his first home run off Tiny Bonham, 7/16/49* Tiny Bonham gave up his first home run to Jimmie Foxx, 8/5/40Foxx connects us to the Francisco Álvarez home run chain, running all the way back to one of baseball's all-time scoundrels, in a different way, Charlie Comiskey. Probably also not great with misogyny or racism, being a 19th century baseball player and 20th century baseball owner. It could be worse. Gurriel hit his second home run one day later in Cleveland off some dude who's currently in Japan. Pity, because Germán, Gurriel, and that guy all are worthy riders of the baseball submersible to be launched later.Miller “saved” it from being a total rogues' gallery, so how cool is it that David Wright's home run chain goes to Mike Scott… who gave up his second and third home runs (while pitching for the Mets) to Keith Hernandez (in his MVP season with the Cardinals)? Also, it should be noted, Hank Thompson hit home runs for the Kansas City Monarchs before he smashed 129 in eight seasons with the New York Giants. These home run chains rely on the Baseball-Reference home run logs, which are powered by a SABR database. Maybe the day will come when more information is added to that database — maybe there's an account of the home run that Thompson hit for the 1943 Monarchs as a 17-year-old. He was the third Black player in MLB, debuting for the St. Louis Browns just 12 days after Larry Doby integrated the American League. Thompson was also the first Black player for the Giants, debuting for New York on the same day as Monte Irvin, July 8, 1949 — a week later, he got on the board with the first of those 129 National League dingers. If you lock yourself in the bank vault call John Patterson. For over 100 years Robblee's Total Security has been cracking safes, unlocking doors, and building security systems throughout the city of Tacoma, WA. John started sweeping the floors in the place while his grandfather taught him the tricks of the trade. If something needed to be locked or unlocked, John could pull it off. But, the real magic in this four generation story of master locksmiths and safecrackers is not in the making of keys... rather, its in finding that one 'key' that eludes most family businesses.

Welcome back to the beginning of Spooky Season and another episode of More than Myths. We're just going to jump right in with two scary stories - but scary for very different reasons. Hailie starts us off with the story about the Two Lions of Tsavo. What happened in 1898 (not 1989 like Hailie accidentally kept saying) during those nine terrifying months while John Patterson was there trying to finish construction of the railroad? Then we switch to a different kind of scary and Corrine tells us about Helltown, your abandoned, run-of-the-paper mill kind of place, but it's got some really spooky things there. The Bus. Crybaby Bridge. The Road to Nowhere and so much more. Corrine's got all the details about this ghost town, so buckle up your pants, grab your popcorn, a good strong drink, a pup or two to snuggle, and take a listen. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/morethanmyths/support

Today's guest is Influential U CEO and Co-founder John Patterson. You've heard him on this podcast since 2016, but somehow, we've never gotten to listen to him tell his story. In 2005, John was having an existential crisis, and his job, relationship, and life were simply not working for him, so he needed a change. At this time, John had already been long-time friends with Kirkland Tibbels, Influential U's other Co-Founder, and through hundreds of hours of conversations with Kirkland, John was able to discover that he was being loyal at all costs. In other words, John was more committed to people and ideologies than he was to taking care of himself. Soon after, he ended his relationship, lost 70 pounds, earned a sizeable 6-figure income, and would eventually found Influential U along with Kirkland. Now John has thirty years of experience focused on personal, business, and management effectiveness and performance and has facilitated training for tens of thousands of people internationally. In 1954 Johnnie Frank Griffin witnessed the violent death of Attorney General-elect Albert Patterson, of Alabama. Six months later he told a grand jury what he knew. The next day he was stabbed. Though his wounds seemed slight, that night he died in a hospital built from the profits of crime. Nine years later, less than an hour after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Johnnie Frank's son, Frank Griffin, saw Lee Harvey Oswald fleeing the scene of the murder of a Dallas police officer. Between these two events Frank grew up in one of the strangest decades in American history. His story touches that of one of the era's best known governors, John Patterson of Alabama. It intersects with mob bosses and CIA operations. There's even room for country music and barroom brawls. This story shows how Frank Griffin's life was truly Touched By Fire. Read less

John Patterson, equipment manager at Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, GA, rebuilt his first engine with his dad at eight years old and never wanted to be anything other than a mechanic. Fed up with Chicago winters, John headed south with plans to become a marine mechanic in southwest Florida. When every boat mechanic he met told him to do something else, John answered an ad at a golf course and after passing the “righty tighty, lefty loosey” test, the rest is history. From fabricating a sand silo and method for filing divot mix more efficiently to a better designed front roller bracket on the John Deere, listeners will find John's reputation as one of the most brilliant in the business is well-earned. In his free time John enjoys his hot-rod Miata, tinkering on his 1975 BMW 750 and teaching his son to drive. As a founding member and past president of the International Golf Course Equipment Managers Association (IGCEMA), John is rewarded to see his vision come to life in the form of the Certified Turf Equipment Manager (CTEM) program launched this year.
