This week, we start a new series all about appreciating the shredded, gravelly, gritty, raspy pipes and throats of rock n' roll. We are focusing on lead singers who crafted truly special tones with their sandpapered delivery. Join us in celebrating these unique sets of pipes that set them apart from all the others. Anyone can scream, but only a few deliver gravel, grit & glory! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Our appreciation, this week, of rough and textured singing extends to all of the genres that we love. Kevin never realized how much this style of vocalizing had an impact on him until putting this whole thing together. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:Metal Church – “Ton Of Bricks” from The Dark (1986)Hot Water Music – “Trademark” from Fuel For The Hate Game (1997)Love/Hate – “Blackout In The Red Room” from Blackout In The Red Room (1990)The Baboon Show – “Gold” from God Bless You All (2022)Grave Digger – “Hymn Of The Damned” from The Living Dead (2018)The Distillers – “Die On A Rope” from Coral Fang (2003)Asomvel – “Born To Rock ‘n' Roll” from Born To Rock ‘n' Roll(2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

This week Brian and Jason wish everyone a very Merry Christmas with their returning guest, Tony Higbee from Tom Keifer Band, and Brother Cane. But first, a tale of how Tony came to be. Tony the 6-string rocker had a shiny gold top axe. And if you ever saw it, you know it kicks a lot of ass. All of the other rockers, used to call his guitar strange. They never let poor Tony, jam with them when they're on stage. Then one fateful Christmas jam, Tom Keifer came to say. Tony with your gold top bright, won't you join my band tonight. Then all the rockers loved him and knew that he would have it made. Tony the 6-string rocker also joined with Brother Cane. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today on the show I'm sitting down with three artists with very different musical backgrounds with a common thread, songwriting. Allie Post, the youngest of the three, has a folksy approach and has just started to climb the mountain of local rock n' roll legends. Josiah Orsie is already one of those icons. He is an alternative rocker, best known for his beloved, innovative, moody rock act, Tears of Mars. Another legend, E. Joseph, has been playing music since he knew there was music. He has decades of experience and a lot of stories to tell; it'll be my challenge to keep our interview to 15 minutes. All of them bring a perspective to the show that is uniquely their own in a timeline where music has changed dramatically. In the words of Tom Keifer, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” From spinnin' vinyl, to CDs, to streaming, to vinyl again, one thing is for sure, music unites. And, in the words of Jagger, “It's only rock n' roll, but I like it, like it.” Join me in welcoming this powerhouse of talent to the Mouthful of Graffiti LIVE at Reb Records. One of the big acts on the 80's glam metal scene was Cinderella. Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tom Keifer and bassist Eric Brittingham formed the band in suburban Philadelphia. Gene Simmons of Kiss tried to get the band a deal with PolyGram, but was unsuccessful at getting the label to take interest. Jon Bon Jovi was more successful with getting them a contract with Mercury/Polygram Records. Keifer and Brittingham added guitarist Jeff LaBar and drummer Jim Drnec to the band. Their debut album entitled Night Songs was released in 1986, and it achieved triple platinum status. Shortly after the recording of that album, Jim Drnec left the group. This, their follow-up album Long Cold Winter, would continue the band's progression in the glam metal genre, but would see a subtle shift towards more blues rock. It would also see the introduction of Fred Coury as drummer for the group, though this would come after the album was recorded utilizing percussionist Cozy Powell for almost all tracks on the album. This second studio album would be a commercial success as well, reaching number 10 on the US charts and achieving double platinum status before the end of the year. The album included the rock ballad “Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone),”which would reach number 12 on the Billboard charts, the highest charting single for the band. Video was a significant factor in the success of the band, and they released a video compilation in 1990 called “Tales from the Gypsy Road” featuring their promo videos and live medleys.Cinderella would be predominantly an opening band through the late 80's and early 90's, touring with Poison, Bon Jovi, and David Lee Roth. Unfortunately the band would decline by the mid 90's due to various setbacks and drama with personnel as well as shifting popularity in the music industry. Their last performance was in 2014.Break out the hair spray as Wayne leads us through this album. Bad Seamstress Blues/Fallin' Apart at the SeamsThe leading track to the album starts with an acoustic blues number paired with a heavier blues song, complete with slide guitar and harmonica. The lyrics are of a life that has come full circle. No regrets, but a mixture of success and sorrow. “Look in the mirror at what I found, It's just the past and it's over now.”Gypsy RoadThese lyrics discuss perseverance to achieve success, but also the loneliness and doubt that come with realizing that dream. The song is a composite of a life on the road, complete with hotel rooms and overnight rides on the tour bus. This song hit number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.Take Me BackThe final song on the album features blues instrumentation including the slide guitar and more cow bell! The lyrics reflect on a younger life from a distance. The singer reminisces about how he was raised and wanting to be reminded of what he left behind. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Axel F (Main Theme from the motion picture “Beverly Hills Cop”)This movie from the mid-80's made its debut on network TV this month. STAFF PICKS:Electric Blue by IcehouseLynch gives us a cool start to the staff picks with Australian band Icehouse's biggest US hit. The lyrics tell the tale of a man pursuing the love of a woman who seems above his station. “Icehouse” is an Aussie slang term for an insane asylum. This song was written by lead singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Iva Davies, and Jon Oates of Hall & Oates fame.Heaven Tonight by Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising ForceBruce features neoclassical metal guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen paired with the vocals of former Rainbow and Deep Purple front man Joe Lynn Turner. This is off Malmsteen's fourth studio album, “Odyssey.” This album went to number 40 on the Billboard 200 charts, the highest charting Malmsteen album to date.Wait by White Lion Rob brings us a power ballad that peaked at number 8 on the US charts in May 1988. It was originally released in June 1987, but did not enter the charts until February 1988, based on the strength of their video on MTV. The video featured Christie Muhaw who died at the age of 24 in a car accident less than a year after the video was released.Damn Good by David Lee RothWayne's staff pick continues the blues focus with a power ballad from Roth and 12-string work by virtuoso Steve Vai. The lyrics were inspired by an encounter Roth had with an old high school friend who had some high school pictures. It is a wistful song remembering friends and good times from the past. NOVELTY TRACK:Killer Klowns by The DickiesWe close out this week's podcast with a track of punk rock's The Dickies. This is off their EP and the movie "Killer Klowns from Outer Space. "
Tony HigbeeHe plays guitar in Tom Keifer's band, but considers life itself to be his greatest Cinderella story. This week Brian and Jason chat briefly and then welcome their guest, Nashville rock guitarist Tony Higbee. The 18 year old version of a now grown Tony Higbee would surely be pinching himself for who he shares stages with these days. As a highschool rocker from tiny Monmouth IL, he was a bass player and had evolved into a serviceable chording guitarist in college. It wasn't until he began writing songs in Atlanta with his band Simple Sick Device in the early 2000's that he began to play guitar with more authority mainly because writing songs on guitar was so much more fluid, and that translated into becoming a real guitar powerhouse. He moved to Nashville and started his own band Caprice which begat East Side Gamblers, but it was his ability as a great singer that sealed the deal and he's ended up as an in-demand touring and session guitarist for Tom Keifer, lead singer of the 15x platinum hair-farmers Cinderella. Tom's solo albums have been a huge success and led to their collaborating for more than 10 years now and traveling the globe. That work also helped connect him with Brother Cane whom he also tours with as lead guitarist. He's a cancer survivor and an animal rescuer along with his girlfriend and is most certainly living his best life.

Something happened in this interview that's never happened with anyone I've talked to in over thirty years. More on that later. John is playing the new District 142 in Wyandotte coming up on July 12th. We talked about his upcoming Live & Loud tour Tom Keifer and Winger. The last of which stops at the world famous Ryman Theater in Nashville, Tenn. "I can't say I won't drop to my knees and lick the spot where Elvis played." He talked about playing Detroit early on in his career with The Scream and talking to multiple radio stations back in the day. John is back in the Dead Daisies. I asked him about the constant turnover in that band, since members come and go. He answered that and how he rejoined the band. "I'm honestly happy to be back. There's no bad blood between us." He talks about their new bassist, and how he dated his ex-wife. LOL. He goes way back with him. He spoke of the great respect he has for Glenn Hughes. "That guy is genuinely a freak. The fact that he still sings the way he sings is mindboggling to me." He talked about rehearsals with the band, and his crazy schedule around that. Ok, about that thing earlier....he was getting tattooed while we were doing the interview. And, yes, he does show what he was getting. (on the video link at wrif.com/meltdown) Enjoy! -Meltdown-

Like the bodacious ‘dos from which the sound gets its name, “hair metal” can be a hard genre to pin down! Luckily, we've got writer/podcaster/critic/organizer and hair metal fan Elana Levin to run through two genre classics to help set some things straight! Matt and Elana cover Def Leppard's “Hysteria” (the one with “Pour Some Sugar On Me” on it) and “Long Cold Winter” by Cinderella (one of the bands featured in HBO's Peacemaker TV series). In this episode, they chat about what makes hair metal so special and popular, what role Peacemaker played in popularizing some under-heard hair metal bangers, and why neither of them like “Pour Some Sugar On Me” very much. This week, Aaron highlights music from an ever-evolving Christian hard rock band from Los Angeles while Brent spotlights a Philadelphia band who credit both Gene Simmons and Jon Bon Jovi as early supporters. Getting their start with a unique look in the 80s before a line-up switch moved the band in a different direction, Aaron features three songs from the Jamie Rowe-era of Guardian. Taking their name from a film title, but not the one from Disney, Brent looks at three songs from the Tom Keifer led band Cinderella.

We're back this week with all the rock news that's fit to spit with New Noize April 2022! It's been a heavy past couple weeks in the rock world with sad stories including the untimely death or Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and the reverberations felt worldwide from it. We share our thoughts on Taylor and some of the reactions to it including that of Ted Nugent. Skid Row announced their newest singer recently with the hiring of former H.E.A.T. front man Erik Gronwall. The band released a brand new single 'The Gang's All Here' featuring Gronwall's vocals. We share our thoughts on the hiring of Gronwall, the firing of Z.P. Theart, and what we think the future holds for Skid Row. Bon Jovi recently kicked off their latest tour and the press is definitely not going wild for it. A recent brutal review from their St. Paul show led us to find some audio of the tour kickoff show in Omaha the night before. You won't believe your ears. Even worse, you won't believe the crowd reaction to it. Additionally, Chris Jereicho recently admitted that Fozzy does make use of backing tracks for their live performances and claims that "everybody does." Between these two stories, it's clear that there's some not-so-great things on the horizon for the rock world and Chris makes his feelings known on the subject while pulling no punches. Other stories touched on this week include Vivian Campbell reflecting on his bad deal with Ronnie James Dio, Tom Keifer publicly commenting on his late band mate Jeff Labar's passing, Spike getting sacked from The Quireboys, and Ugly Kid Joe announcing a new tour; spoiler alert, the US is once again not included.
