As your CPG brand grows bigger, something naturally happens that has a divergent relationship with customer intimacy. In the CPG industry, scaling your brand usually involves onboarding more intermediaries. The fact is that creating long-term close bonds between customers and CPG brands isn't easy given the nature of the industry. The examples are plentiful within the CPG industry, but the bigger a brand gets, typically the further it wrongfully distances itself from those core customers. And that's becoming a bigger issue in today's market where customers expect CPG brands to add value to their lives beyond simply providing a great “made to stock” product. So, CPG brands must focus on building in a company culture that rewards the creation and adoption of unscalable customer-centric strategies. The goal is to prioritize customer intimacy even as your brand goes through the typical legacy growth construct of the CPG industry. This business strategy increases customer loyalty and fosters customer-driven revenue growth…and companies that excel in customer intimacy combine detailed customer knowledge with operational flexibility. While there are tons of different customer intimacy building strategies across departments, many of which have become more scalable by leveraging technological and social platforms…I want to focus on a specific product development one that I've dubbed “Creatively Small.” I will also share a Siete Family Foods (Siete Small Batch) case study that will really drive the "creatively small" strategic points home. If you're anything like me and my family, you may already be familiar (and appreciative!) of the innovative and delicious food brand we're spotlighting today, Siete Family Foods, a company dedicated to sharing Mexican-American cuisine with those who want or need grain-free options. Today's guests are sister and brother – Veronica Garza, Siete's Co-Founder, President, and Chief Innovation Officer, and Miguel Garza, Co-Founder and CEO. They're here to talk about their first cookbook, The Siete Table, which features over a hundred gluten free Mexican-American dishes that span every course and occasion. Of course, we cover the brand's backstory – after Veronica Garza had many autoimmune issues show up, including lupus, she started to do CrossFit with her family in her parents' backyard. After switching to a grain-free diet, she noticed her joints weren't bothering her anymore, which was the catalyst to starting this company. Miguel and Veronica discuss the recipes they can't wait to share, why sharing these recipes is so special to them, and the inspiring story of how Veronica (as well as other family members) took a huge risk in order to get Siete off the ground. You will learn about...The start of it all: the almond flour tortilla Veronica's struggles with autoimmune issues How her diet restrictions clashed with her culture Coming together as a family: support is everything Pushing through the pain of lupus Six to nine months of diet and lifestyle changes to resolve her symptoms Risking Veronica's insurance coverage to get started The Garza family captures an entrepreneurial spark Expanding the product (chips, seasonings, crunchy shells, etc.) Ethos and mission of Siete Family Foods Family first, family second, business third An admittedly bad first company name revealed Seven members of the family: “Siete” Building a soul-aligned company The Siete Table: writing a cookbook Favorite recipes from the book Inspirations for The Siete Table Resources:Order Siete Table: https://sietefoods.com/pages/siete-table (sietefoods.com/pages/siete-table) Find Siete products near you: https://sietefoods.com/pages/locator (sietefoods.com/pages/locator) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sietefoods/?hl=en (@sietefoods) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SieteFoods/ (Siete Foods) Twitter: https://twitter.com/SieteFoods (@SieteFoods) Connect with Kelly:https://kellyleveque.com/ (kellyleveque.com) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bewellbykelly/ (@bewellbykelly) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bewellbykelly/ (www.facebook.com/bewellbykelly) Be Well By Kelly is produced by http://crate.media/ (Crate Media). Miguel and Veronica Garza grew up in Laredo, Texas, in the kind of family that did almost everything together. So when Veronica realized that a grain-free diet was helping her cope with debilitating health issues, the rest of the family—all six of them—adopted the same paleo-friendly diet. Soon Veronica was making her own almond flour tortillas at home and selling them at a CrossFit gym that the Garza family had launched in Laredo. The grain-free tortillas were a hit, and by 2016, Siete Family Foods products were being sold in Whole Foods Markets across the country. Today, Veronica and Miguel head the company with the help of the whole family, and Siete has become one of the fastest-growing Mexican-American food brands in the U.S.How I Built This Summit - information and tickets at:http://summit.npr.org

It’s remarkable to hear Miguel Garza, co-founder and CEO of Siete Family Foods, discuss the brand’s innovation strategy and how it fits into the company’s mission and ethos. Since Siete’s launch in 2014, Garza has presided over a sprawling and ever-widening platform of products, including tortillas, taco seasonings, queso dips and enchilada sauces, all of which are plant-based and grain-free. Despite Siete’s alignment with two impactful food trends, Garza says that new product development is focused on creating heritage-inspired food that can appeal to a broad range of consumers. That commitment is a cornerstone of Siete’s ambitious goal to become a billion-dollar brand, an objective that, given surging sales and a $90 million dollar infusion of capital in 2019, is getting closer to fruition. In an interview included in this episode, Garza expounded upon the principles upon which Siete was founded, including the importance of family in how the company operates and plans for the future and why love is a critical component for any business. Show notes: 0:37: Miguel Garza, Co-Founder & CEO, Siete Family Foods -- Garza joined Taste Radio producer and host Ray Latif for an expansive conversation exploring the Siete CEO’s penchant for startling people, how the family-run company embraces its staff, the meaning of the brand name and logo and how he and his siblings work through business disagreements. He also discussed the hallmarks of Siete’s product development and innovation strategies, why certain products don’t make it to market and how brands can effectively collaborate with retailers on extensions. Later, he explained why revenue isn’t the defining metric for Siete to become an iconic brand, how he and Siete shareholders determined that The Stripes Group was the right long-term financial partner and shared his advice for young entrepreneurs and CEOs. Brands in this episode: Siete Family Foods, Annie’s, Chobani, Califia Farms, Honest Tea

Consumers are demanding more from brands—authenticity, transparency, and functionality are just a few traits that people are looking for. It often comes down to the values of which the brand is built on and Veronica and Miguel Garza co-founders of Siete Family Foods are an example of a brand created on a strong foundation. The brother and sister team, joined me on the mbgpodcast to talk about how they started a “better-for-you Mexican-American food brand” and why remaining true to their core values is critical as they grow. After Veronica was diagnosed with her first auto-immune condition at the age of 17, which then developed into lupus and Hashimoto’s years later, her brother suggested she try the paleo diet. Eating a healthier diet was just one component of her health puzzle that helped improve her symptoms, but she missed eating the foods she grew up eating like tortillas and chips. This led to her experiment with different grain-free flours. In her childhood, she learned how to make tortillas from her grandmother and decided to give it a try, this time with almond flour. She started sharing these delicious tortillas with her family and found more and more people around her were interested in a grain-free tortillas. “We saw how much it could help people, and realized that the best way to provide this product to people, make it more convenient for them, and have it change their lives the way it changed ours, was to put it out on shelves.” While building this brand, the seven siblings, who all work at Siete, have centered their growth around a list of core values which influence every product they launch and represent their roots as a Mexican-American family from South Texas. These are three that Miguel and Veronica spoke to as integral in creating an iconic brand. Enjoy this episode! Hint founder and CEO Kara Goldin knows a thing or two about building a brand around a successful e-commerce strategy. Approximately 40 percent of the flavored water company’s $100 million in annual revenue comes from online sales, a majority of which is from its website, drinkhint.com. When advising entrepreneurs on how to build a foundation for success online, Goldin encourages them to keep it simple. “Whether you’re a $500,000 brand or you’re a $1 billion brand, start small,” she said in an interview included in this episode. “Launch a small website… and make it really simple to transact. If you start with ‘the consumer controls your destiny,’ make it easy. Think about your own life. People are really busy. Spend money on photography, (include) a really basic story and make it super-easy to check out. And then spend a little bit of money on ads.” As part of the interview, recorded at Hint’s headquarters in San Francisco, Goldin also discussed the mission and purpose of its brick-and-mortar retail store, which it describes as an “experiential water bar,” and how it has enabled the company to learn more about its consumers. Also in this episode: A conversation with James Le Compte, the CEO of To’ak, an ultra-premium chocolate brand based in Ecuador. Le Compte discussed the origins and positioning of To’ak and shared an amazing story of how the company located and identified the rare cacao used in its products. Show notes: 1:27: Siete & Stripes + TR Now! -- The hosts discussed recent headlines on BevNET and NOSH, including a lawsuit filed by the model known as Fiji Water Girl against The Wonderful Company and a $90 million minority investment by The Stripes Group into Siete Family Foods. Mike, John and Ray also spoke about their visit to Hint HQ, and riffed on Taste Radio Now!, a new video show livestreamed on Instagram and YouTube. 12:53: Interview: Kara Goldin, Founder/CEO, Hint -- We first featured Kara Goldin on Taste Radio back in Ep. 81 of the flagship podcast. This time around, Ray Latif sat down with her Hint’s headquarters in San Francisco’s Cow Hollow/Marina district, where the company operates out of four storefronts, one of which is a company-owned retail store. Goldin explained why the shop enables Hint to “really secures [an] omni-channel approach,” and its role in attracting new business to its DTC platform. She also spoke about best practices for e-commerce and why data from online sales is critical to understanding Hint’s audience. 36:57: Interview: James Le Compte, CEO, To’ak Chocolate -- At BevNET Live Winter 2018, Le Compte joined Mike Schneider and talked all things To’ak. The company creates ultra-premium chocolate using a rare variety of cacao once thought to be extinct; To’ak chocolate bars range from $280-685, depending on variety. Le Compte discussed his affinity for Taste Radio and also explains why Ecuador is central to To’ak’s mission and discussed why the company chose to position its products as luxury items. Brands in this episode: Goldthread, Liquid Death, Harmless Harvest, Colorado Hemp Honey, Hint, To’ak
