Alec has a really unique background ranging from Georgia Tech physics grad to former professional Spartan Racer and competitive ultramarathoner to Murph world record holder. Lately he's becoming a bigger and bigger voice in the fitness social media world with his emphasis on hybrid training, antifragile approach to movement, and willingness to take on big problems in the space. In this conversation we cover a lot of ground. We start with how to ask better questions (Alec is a master of the Instagram Q&A) and then we dive into interference effect, how people misinterpret the concept of progressive overload, and more. You can find Alec on Instragram @alecblenis where he has tons of great content, and he also offers paid programming and coaching. In addition, she considers herself a master community builder and has gathered hundreds of female leaders in her online community, mastermind program, networking events, and women's circles. Bridget's magnetism towards spiritual and healing work started at a young age with a lyme disease diagnosis. The diagnosis led her on a healing journey as she immersed herself in learning about holistic nutrition, ayurveda, and the idea of "food as medicine". She became a yoga instructor, holistic health coach and ayurveda workshop facilitator all before the age of 24. Beyond her work, she is an avid athlete, trail runner and Spartan Racer. She tends to find "herself" on the mountain and finds that running and racing is the perfect metaphor to navigate the at times, challenging, entrepreneurial journey. Alec Blenis is a lot of things: Georgia Tech physics grad, former professional Spartan Racer and competitive ultramarathoner, current Murph world record holder, Instagram Q&A master, and coach at Complete Human Performance. With a background like that, it makes sense that he specializes in coaching people who also want to do a lot of things. Specifically, he coaches people who are looking to pursue "concurrent training," with goals spanning both strength and endurance simultaneously. The relevance of this for tactical professionals is obvious, so we brought him on to have a conversation about how he approaches this kind of training as both an athlete and a coach.

The basis of his company is the foundation that we as humans cannot reach our potential until we have gone through a struggle or a test. It's what he calls, purposeful suffering.  Coming from a childhood where he had nowhere to learn, only his own,  and had to figure out how to make it. Joe believes his success came from his purposeful suffering philosophy. This is one of my favorite episodes, no doubt. Join Kressa and me as we camp, bike, run, kayak, paddleboard, swim in waterfalls, and even jump out of planes in the “all-around beautiful little town” she calls home! Kressa is a wife, mom, grandmother, Spartan Racer, ex-Sporthorse saleswoman, and entrepreneur. Her most recent venture was creating the Shower Toga, a clean-up and changing garment that acts as your very own personal locker room. It provides all the privacy you need to shower anywhere, anytime. And a few years back, Kressa presented the product on Shark Tank and walked away with a deal with/from Mark Cuban! These days, she and her husband can be found traveling the nation in their fifth wheel.   Save 15% off any Shower Toga order by clicking here and using the promo code LOCALS15 at checkout.   What We Cover in this Episode Why her product, the Shower Toga, is perfect for hikers, tent campers, and runners. How Woodstock, GA, has maintained a small-town feel amid US expansion. Why Woodstock, GA, is worth a visit. A nearby Hallmark-esqe town that's also worth visiting. The best and worst time of year to visit Woodstock, GA. A local destination you must visit during the winter. The best spots to stay (and camp) in Woodstock, GA. The optimal place in town for breakfast, snacks, and coffee. An unrivaled local area for biking, running, kayaking, and paddleboarding. How to find epic waterfalls in Woodstock, GA. Two of the finest places for lunch, one with a very talented chef and another with epic garlic rolls. A few local lakes and mountain destinations worth a visit. An exhilarating activity worth checking out (and the safest company to book with.) Where to find unsurpassable margarita's and martini's in town. The most beautiful Instagram spot in Woodstock, GA. Where you need to go to get a panoramic view of Atlanta. A destination in the area that is not overrated for beauty, but for its ability to provide peace and quiet, and what you should know before visiting. How to watch Kressa's Shark Tank Episode – Season 10 on Hulu!   Quotes "Woodstock, Georgia, still has that small-town feel. They haven't lost that quaintness that, to me, you only get from small towns, and they haven't lost that during the time that they've been growing and building and expanding. And, I think that's a hard balance for any town to keep that feel in the midst of so much expansion, which is going on all over the country." "You also have the mom-and-pop stores that haven't been run out of business because the people in Woodstock are wonderful, and the community supports those small businesses. And I love that. I love knowing that I can go into a dress shop, and it's owned by another small business entrepreneur, just like myself. And she's getting enough business in that boutique or dress shop to maintain a wonderful quality of life for her family. And that's because of the community." "…the area is absolutely beautiful. There are so many places to go and places to hike, and there's waterfalls out there. And then, within 30 minutes, there's lots of different places to camp and feel like you are literally hours away from civilization. So, there's a lot that it has to offer for anyone." "…there are good and bad days to living in RVs for sure. It is a roller coaster ride. But right now, I still love it. I feel free. I don't feel so tied down." "Woodstock is truly one of those places that, within a 25-mile radius, you can have amazing food, meet amazing people, have access to all of the shopping that you could ever want, go on incredible hikes, do water activities, and go into the mountains. … It's just an all-around beautiful little town that has so much to offer. And it should be on everybody's list. It really should be."   Links to Places Mentioned in this Episode Where the Locals Stay: Airbnb Red Top Mountain State Park Outdoor Destinations Mentioned in this Episode's “Perfect Day”: Red Top Mountain State Park Olde Rope Mill Park Lake Allatoona Kennesaw Mountain Yonah Mountain Spaceland Stone Mountain Lake Lanier Carters Lake Restaurants and Bars Mentioned in this Episode: Copper Coin Century House Ipp's Pastaria & Bar Ippolito's Neighborhood Italian El Jinete Mexican Restaurant Roswell ICE Instagram Photo Spots Mentioned in this Episode: Olde Rope Mill Park   Thanks for Listening! From a very early age I learned that life is to be lived, not just survived. Even before the accident I knew life was an adventure. After the accident I found the ability to conquer unimaginable things. “I can do hard things” has been a way of life for me. I mean, who could imagine that a guy without legs could complete a 50 mile hike, make it to State Championship Wrestling, or become an Eagle Scout? My mom told me soon after the accident that if I wanted to do something all I had to do was figure out a way to make it happen. Throughout my life there have been few if any challenges that I have not been able to succeed in accomplishing. Trials make us stronger. They raise us up to a higher plain. If we are never pushed and challenged we can never obtain our full potential. For me it was losing my legs. For you, it may be school, work, parenting, or just dealing with the complexities of day-to-day life. Regardless of what your challenge is, you too can find a way to RISE UP! Kacey is a true hero. I chose one athlete to represent each decade from the 40's all the way to the 90's. From Spartan Racers to Ice Swimmers, we have had some amazing Seasoned Athletes over the last 100 episodes. We discuss being an athlete in:- Your 40's: Cath Pendleton is an Ice Swimmer and shares how she got into Ice Swimming and eventually swimming the English Channel.- Your 50's: Andrea Owen is a Spartan Racer and fell into racing by way of her son who convinced her to give it a shot after attending one of his races.- Your 60's: Sue Spencer is an Olympic Weightlifter and loves the peace and solitude going to the gym brings to her and her life.- Your 70's: Lynn Salvo is a Cyclist whose journeys through Canada and North America earned her two Guinness World Records and many amazing memories from the seat of a bicycle.- Your 80's: Libby James is a Masters Runner earning World Records for USA Track and Field in 10K and 15K distances in the women's 80-84 age group.- Your 90's: Betty Lindberg is a runner who is still going at 96 and has the best advice for her younger self and what is most important for the aging athlete. Here are some highlights.  It's a lifestyle, not just a hobby“Staying active and healthy, I think is important. I mean, I don't want to be one of those people when I get to be 70 or 80, sitting around doing nothing. I think the more active you are, the more healthier you're going to be, the more you're going to be able to do, so I just think just getting out and having fun and finding something that you really enjoy.” - Andrea OwenIt's just as mental as it is physical“I love Olympic weightlifting, and I go to the gym three times a week with my trainer, and we just work on Olympic lifts, so he basically watches me what I'm doing and occasionally comments, and it's like a solitude time, it's a time for me, I'm just concentrating on what I'm doing, and I walk out of that gym after an hour or so, and it's like I've done a meditation or something, it's very, very relaxing in that way, mentally, you are so focused that you're not thinking about all those other things that go on in the world, and so for me, it's been amazing that way, and just being to let go of other stuff.” - Sue SpencerCycling through History“Well, what happened was I'd done the two cross country rides, and then I looked at the pieces and I thought, well, I have a great friend in Wichita, that could be the hub. And then I just kind of... And then I was going to do Canada, so that was going to be the top of the peace sign. So then I just looked at what needed to be filled in in order to make a peace sign, and then I just made rides that fit those places, and then it turned out that one of them was from Wichita to Biloxi, Mississippi. And it went through all kinds of civil rights places, which was unbelievable.”“I was a terrible history student, but being in the places being in the place where Emmett Till would have harassed the white owner of the grocery store and being in the courtroom where his murderers were tried, it was unbelievable to me so those are two highlights, but there were many, many, many of them. And then not even a month later, I cycle what I hadn't done on the East Coast, and I cycled Underground Railroad with a friend.” - Lynn SalvoGet started on your athletic aging journey by joining the Ageless Women Athletes Facebook community. Are you in it for the long game? The long haul? Many Spartans have spoken about the patience and the undaunting work ethic and determination it takes to get a taste of success let alone get to the top. Our fearless leader Joe DeSena recently made an Instagram Story on this. Gary Vaynerchuk says this on the regular, and of course, ask any Spartan Racer if they out of the blue started winning races. NO. You gotta be it in for the long game if you want to get to the top. As they say, Every overnight success story has a 10 year history (at least)! LESSONS: Did you know Rodney Dangerfield got involved with comedy as a young kid but he did not start building momentum until his late 40s! That’s 30+ years of struggling and never giving up! To stay motivated, it’s important to look at short term goals such as this week, this month and this year. But also, look at the BIG picture, the 3, 5 and next 10 years. Be ready to pivot your course of action, but don’t quit! Using Westley’s own words, he has “Professional ADD” and wants to do everything...but also do it well! Westley also happens to be one of my primary ninja warrior training partners who has inspired me to push past my abilities and become a stronger and more well-rounded human being. There are few people I’ve met in my life who are more positive, energetic, and encouraging...all while being brutal and relentless all at the same time. In our conversation today Westley and I focus on what it takes to become 1% better every single day. We talk about the hardship he’s faced in his life including waking up one morning to find his roommate dead, and battling a year of depression because of this. And we dig into the idea of being intentional about progress...because it’s not just about “putting in your 10,000 hours,” it’s about WHAT YOU DO with those 10,000 hours that actually counts. #59: Thad Burkamper -- Training For and Racing His First Spartan Race

About a year ago, Thad Burkamper signed up for a Spartan Race. Admittedly, he was out of shape and was starting from step one with this whole running thing. Here's the important part: he embraced the "It's a long way to the top...if you wanna rock n roll" mindset (or the IALWTTTIYWRNR mindset...for "short") and consistently improved little by little as the year went by. As running became easier, he transformed his garage/back yard into a homemade Spartan Race obstacle. Now there are soft balls hanging from ropes, giant tires, Atlas stones and humongous logs. Basically, he went full Spartan Racer. And it has paid off. I'm excited to share this podcast today because Thad hits on quite a few topics: what inspired him to kickstart his physicality, how he overcame a major health related setback halfway through his training, how he used work and home-life as "added workouts" and, of course, his experience racing the Spartan Super in Michigan. I'm proud to say that now he's completely obsessed and is taking on the Spartan Trifecta next year (hopefully finishing out here with me in Colorado!!). More importantly, Thad is spreading goodness by inspiring his wife to step up to the plate. After watching Thad race, she is now spending her afternoons flipping big ole tires and rope climbing up trees. What's more "Like a Bigfoot" than that!! Also for the first time ever, Thad recorded a song specifically for the show! It's hilarious and is extremely relatable by anyone who has been a beginner runner. I put it right after the intro so be sure to check it out! Thanks Thad! I'm excited for our race next summer! Keeping in touch with you through your training has really inspired me to stay on track over the last year. Keep spreading goodness! #37 How To Perform At Your Peak Potential with Ben GREENFIELD Expert Game Plan Session: New York Times Bestselling Author, Top 100 Most influential People in Healthy and Fitness, Ex-Body Builder, Ironman Triathlete June 3, 2015 BACKGROUND Today we will discuss health vs performance, the misconceptions of pre and post workout fueling, as well as the benefits of thermoregulation. You will learn how you can change your surroundings to optimize your recovery and help perform better on a day to day basis, travel tips, warrior breathing, ways to OPTIMIZE your breathing, and things to do during the day that optimize your body’s potential to adapt to training. BIO Born, Ben GREENFIELD Currently living in Spokane, Washington with wife and twin sons Ex body builder; Ironman Triathlete, Spartan Racer, Coach, speaker Author of the New York times bestselling book Beyond Training: Mastering Endurance, Health, and Life Voted NSCA’s Personal Trainer of the year in 2008; Top 100 most influential people in health and fitness LEAVE A REVIEW & Subscribe to #BeyondAthletic in iTunes so other can find us too! Share this with one person you think could benefit the most… PERSONAL QUOTE: “Every little win counts.” -BG Key Discussion Points: Why did you title your book “Beyond training”? What are the top 5 mistakes you see athletes making? What is the importance of pre and post workout fueling? How should athletes prepare for days with weight trainings, conditioning, and practice all in one day, with less than an 8 hour window? What can you tell us about cold/hot thermogenesis? What is the significance of “Warrior Breathing” and “Breath Hold Walks”? Key Lessons: Its not hard figure out how to get stronger, its how do you optimize your ability to doing so the best and healthy way “What gets left on the table is how to incorporate things in your life that are going to optimize hormones that are going to enhance your deep sleep, that are going to speed up your recovery, get rid of annoying issues like bloating and gas and gut problems that plague a lot of athletes.” BG @ 3:47 Its not only about looking good on the outside; but its most important to FEEL good(healthy) on the inside Think more about your long term health and career and not just about the acute performance Most athletes neglect the areas of strength, power, balance, mobility, and speed. It isn’t always needed to massively prioritize your pre and post workout meals You can stay fueled without relying on energy bars, powders, and other processed sources “The trick is to be able to keep the body fueled without necessarily relying on franken fuels to do so.” BG @ 16:25 Its important to go out of your way to find convenient fuel sources that are more natural “Chia seeds are fantastic; you mix them in water, they give you a slow bleed of amino acids along with fatty acids, and you can add some REAL honey to that..some sea salt..put it in water..or coconut water..you’ve got a little more natural rehydration beverage.” BG @ 17:26 Cold exposure can be beneficial for stress resilience “If you train yourself every single morning to hop in the shower and put it on the cold setting, take a deep breath and just let yourself flow, let your mind block any type of pain or discomfort, there’s a huge bonus there in terms of stress resilience.” BG @ 22:43 Heat has similar benefits to cold “..trains your body how to shovel blood very efficiently around your body.” BG @ 23:22 Warrior Breathing can be done with meditation “50 sharp and deep inhales...and each of those sharp and deep inhales is followed by a short and shallow exhale.” BG @ 16:19 Breath Hold Walks can increase your overall breath hold times MORE TIPS FROM BEN @ http://beyondathletic.com/37 Definition of an Athlete? "..having the ultimate combination of performance, fat loss, recovery, digestion, brain, sleep, and hormone optimization...once you’ve got to that point..then you’re performing like the human machine has the potential to perform." -Ben Greenfield LEAVE A REVIEW FOR THIS EPISODE ON: ITUNES -OR- OUR SITE.. Ben Greenfield, triathlete, Spartan Racer, fitness guru, father and author of Beyond Training is equally driven by his passions as well as his family. The whole idea, he says, is to remember the important things in life. To achieve that balance, instead of forgoing one thing or another, he combines both. His family stays together while they play together. It started when he began running triathlons together with his wife eight years ago, and continues to this day even if it means doing hill sprints with a toddler on his back.  Watch the video episode at http://spartanuppodcast.comLessons:1. It’s okay to push the limits in life.  But be when your activities take you away from your family, friends, relationships, love, etc., you have gone too far.2. The best way to stay active and motivated is to sign up for something – 5K, Spartan Race, etc.3. Expose your kids at a young age to fitness and an active lifestyle.Panel Notes:Joe Desena: Ben Greenfield is the ultimate body hack. He is always experimenting and trying to find ways to do it faster while requiring less work, and at the same time he’s an incredibly smart and thoughtful guy. As I was interviewing him I kept thinking,  “I need to meet his parents. I need to find out how they forged him.”Col. Nye:  He’s a renaissance athlete, tennis player and a body builder turned triathlete with an admirable philosophy of balancing fitness with family.  Don’t be an “Invisible Athlete.” Teach, mold, lead the next generation through your actions and lifestyle. Sefra Alexandra: When you build a community around your training you have the opportunity to maximize the work-play-life ethos. Ben brilliantly involves his wife and children creating a baseline of physicality and togetherness in his family’s ecology.
