"Take that step back and look at how the fabric that we exist in with our industries can change...I think there is so much room to embrace the opportunities, a challenge generally means there is money to be made as soon as you figure out how to do it." This podcast is a part of a series of episodes that will be coming out from now until Spring 2025 covering the AEC Summit in Austin, Texas April 23rd – 25th 2025. We encourage our listeners and partners to share and engage with us during this conference coverage! Use the promo code “AOCMFER” that will take $250 off registration. In this conversation, Devon Tilly and co-host Nathan Wood chat withNick Caravella in preparation for the  AEC Summit in Austin, Texas in April 2025! With over a decade of experience in the industry, Nick Caravella has a unique outlook by starting his career as an architect. His passion for using new technology on projects led him to a career in construction technology, where he worked in a series of product and community focused initiatives which further highlighted how companies could be enabling growth through optimizing their technology approach. Through this journey, Nick joined Avicado Construction Technology Services, where he currently works as the Director of Growth and Industry Strategy, as well as the Host/Producer of the company's construction technology podcast, Wired to Build. His background in architecture and expertise with technology provides a unique background that understands the needs of the AEC-O industry and how to apply the solutions being created to the problems we're trying to solve today. Nick holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and is a registered Architect. Co-host Nathan Wood understands how rewarding the design and construction process can be when technology and culture embrace a new era of innovation. Nathan first earned his reputation as an industry thought leader in 2011, sharing his award-winning implementation of virtual design and construction (VDC) while working on integrated project delivery (IPD) healthcare projects. Nathan strives to share the best practices and lessons learned he's gathered from over 100 project teams spanning the US, Europe, and the Middle East. These experiences have taught him that when it comes to adopting technology in construction, it's not one size fits all. For that reason, Nathan founded SpectrumAEC with a clear goal — solving the human barriers to new process and technology adoption. As SpectrumAEC's founder and chief enabling officer, Nathan helps organizations and project teams successfully adopt change through executive strategy sessions and end user workshops. Nathan continues to support industry progression through conference presentations, academic papers, and as President of the Construction Progress Coalition. Will regulators enforce compliance if the rule passes, especially given Evolve's shaky history? As the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) nears finalizing a personal financial data rights rule, the industry braces for a shift from screen scraping to APIs. The Building BITE host Mike Diercksen, CRIS, welcomes Nick Caravella, AIA, NCARB, NOMA, Director of Growth and Industry Strategy at Avicado Construction Technology Services. We begin the episode by discussing Nick's professional career. He initially started working as an Architect out in Denver Colorado but found himself feeling compelled to elevate the industry at large. To do so, Nick joined Avicado where he helps streamline owners' technology integration with various industry stakeholders and ultimately enhances the world of design and construction. Before we wrap up the conversation, Nick leaves us with three key takeaways. 1. There Is No Substitute for Good Planning: 95% of the industry data currently being collected is unstructured, meaning there is no clear-cut plan for how to optimize that data. Take the time to get ahead of the curve by reviewing your data and creating a road map for the “how” and the “why”. This will pay dividends when AI and other automations become even larger fixtures within the construction and design industry. 2. Who Else Needs to be at the Table? Nothing in the Construction and Design Industry happens in a vacuum, and while deadlines are tight, it is important to look around and make sure you are bringing in the right people. Seeking input from various stakeholders in the project along with industry experts will help you troubleshoot a wide range of problems before they happen, while keeping your team within their areas of expertise. 3. Ask How My Work Impacts Your Work: Whether your focus is on BIM or a specific trade, it is important to understand the impact your work has on those around you. Taking the time to communicate your process and understand the work of those around you will ultimately lead to better handoffs and reduce potential bottlenecks on the project. To learn more about how you can better prepare your firm for the opportunities ahead, listen to our full podcast episode with Nick on “Maximizing Owners Operations Efficiency Through Construction Technology.” Please like, share, and subscribe to this podcast!

Is the sports and active nutrition space really the influential epicenter of the CPG world? I've made that confident declaration A LOT lately, but I have to be honest…behind closed doors I'm just waiting for someone to call me out one of its massive blind spots (like sustainability). But as Deion Sanders recently said, "you better come get us now because this is the worst we will ever be." While there's still tons of industry-wide work that needs to be done, I'm inspired by a recent innovative sustainability project by the largest global online sports nutrition brand MyProtein. Faced with the common “out of date stock product disposal” challenge, the company decided to think circularly by combining Myprotein ingredients and upcycled materials to produce a sustainable fish feed pellet. So, if you see Nemo looking fit…you know why! Functional CPG Brands Should Fear "Private Label 3.0" | CPG Industry Strategy

the Joshua Schall Audio Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2023 9:39

Even as food inflation moderates slightly, private-label brands continue to pose an expanding level of competitive threat to functional CPG brands. What? Why would a functional CPG brand be worried about competition risk from private-label products? They are just cheaper basic versions of national brand products anyways, right? While those cheapest copycat focused private-label brands like Great Value at Walmart or Market Pantry at Target are still thriving, those (and many more) would be bucketed into what I consider private-label 1.0. What happened next...was that economic conditions from the Great Recession caused shoppers (especially Millennials) to get even savvier. Because of this, they were more willing to give private-label brands a chance, despite growing up in a family that consistently bought branded CPG products. Retailers took advantage of that and invested heavily into store brands and shifted their private-label product development strategy away from imitation and into creating innovative products of their own. Retailers did not only change the ingredients of the products, but also have started entering very small and sometimes experimental segments. Thus, private label not only helps with better-priced alternatives to common products…but allows a consumer to enter premium, niche categories without compromising their spending. This maturation in everything aspect of private-label products is what I consider private-label 2.0. It seems that in today's CPG business landscape…the competitive clash between premium-positioned branded CPG products and retailer private-label brands seems to be at an all-time high. But what if I told you things are going to get tougher! We are about to start the private-label 3.0 era, and I have the playbook that every premium CPG brand needs. Private labels will continue adapting to the changing consumer landscape, be it a surge in demand for traditional value-orientated solutions, or requests for something beyond the historical standard. It seems without a doubt at this point that retailers will continue to maneuver within the set of different price-tier solutions…with more premium private label products being developed to enter various niches. So, don't get caught overlooking those same retailers that are your wholesale customers when doing competitive analysis…because they are equally a threat to your fellow functional food, functional beverage, and supplement brands. The Coca-Cola Company is no rookie when it comes to brand licensing…that is unless we are talking about the kid from the Rookie of the Year movie. Heck…The Coca-Cola Company is basically an elaborate licensing company when you realize about two-thirds of its total revenue are generated by "concentrate sales" aka licensing of its secret ingredients in syrup form. But that's neither here nor there, because ole Henry Rowengartner got something new up his sleeve. The Coca-Cola Company can be seen pretty much everywhere in the grocery store, right? Well…add the produce section to the list because the beverage CPG giant is entering into a licensing deal with an agricultural company to leverage the Minute Maid and Simply logos on select items. While the licensing revenue will help the petty cash fund grow…I think a bigger win is if this strategy helps boost branded juice sales. Small Batch = Big Customer Intimacy | Siete Family Foods "Case Study" | CPG Industry Strategy

As your CPG brand grows bigger, something naturally happens that has a divergent relationship with customer intimacy. In the CPG industry, scaling your brand usually involves onboarding more intermediaries. The fact is that creating long-term close bonds between customers and CPG brands isn't easy given the nature of the industry. The examples are plentiful within the CPG industry, but the bigger a brand gets, typically the further it wrongfully distances itself from those core customers. And that's becoming a bigger issue in today's market where customers expect CPG brands to add value to their lives beyond simply providing a great “made to stock” product. So, CPG brands must focus on building in a company culture that rewards the creation and adoption of unscalable customer-centric strategies. The goal is to prioritize customer intimacy even as your brand goes through the typical legacy growth construct of the CPG industry. This business strategy increases customer loyalty and fosters customer-driven revenue growth…and companies that excel in customer intimacy combine detailed customer knowledge with operational flexibility. While there are tons of different customer intimacy building strategies across departments, many of which have become more scalable by leveraging technological and social platforms…I want to focus on a specific product development one that I've dubbed “Creatively Small.” I will also share a Siete Family Foods (Siete Small Batch) case study that will really drive the "creatively small" strategic points home. Now because that loyalty's been shattered, there's a very good chance they're going to go across the street to your competitor." 21:56 The importance of listening to consumers and customers - Mark: "One other area that's top of mind with our customers these days is employee satisfaction. Because it's very expensive to lose a good employee, especially someone who's been there for a period of time and you've invested in all that training. For them to be mired down by spreadsheets and phone calls and all that, if you can give them that visibility and confidence that they're communicating something that's accurate, they feel better as associates."  Find out more about Mark in the links below:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/markjdelaney001/Website: https://www.fourkites.com/

Offense and defense are terms that we're mostly familiar with when talking about sports, but these words are also applicable in business strategy. The easiest way to think about offensive versus defensive business strategy is that when a company is playing offense, its making investments that move the business forward. Alternatively, when a company is playing defense, its making investments to prevent potential downside. Offensive and defensive strategies are equally important, but when you utilize them depends on numerous considerations. That being said, I want to focus on a saying in sports that “defense wins championships.” So, who's the “King of Defense” in the beverage CPG world right now? Monster Beverage Corporation (NASDAQ: MNST). It's no exaggeration to say that Monster Energy is one of the most successful beverage brands in the world and if business championships are determined by financial success…Monster Energy would be a dynasty within the CPG industry. Episode 139- Representation Matters with Kevin Iwamoto Today, we are delighted to speak with another icon in our industry, Kevin Iwamoto!  Kevin has received many awards! He is the Chief Customer Officer of Bizly and is also a speaker, singer, and writer. He joins us today to talk about our industry, changing careers, and racism against Asian people and people from the Pacific Islands. We hope you enjoy listening to today's engaging conversation with Kevin Iwamoto! Bio: Condensed Bio for Kevin Iwamoto, GLP, GTP | Chief Customer Officer | Bizly Inc.:  Kevin Iwamoto is an award-winning speaker, industry influencer, author, educator, and subject-matter expert consultant in business travel, GDPR, SMM, the meetings/events marketplace, and personal branding. His progressive industry expertise is featured regularly in industry trade publications, such as Business Travel News (BTN), Northstar Meetings Group, and MeetingsNet. He was President and CEO of the NBTA (now GBTA) from 2001-2003 during the tumultuous 9/11 aftermath.  Kevin is the recipient of many industry awards and recognition, including the 2015 Travel Weekly Gold Magellan Award for Best Overall Industry Blog, which is now syndicated and featured as Industry Insights via Northstar Meetings Group online. Kevin is also the 2016 MPI RISE Award for meetings industry leaders, and in 2014 he received a rare honor from GBTA with a designation as Industry Icon. Throughout his career, he has also been included in numerous industry Top Most Influential Executive lists.  He has two published books to his credit, Strategic Meetings Management: From Theory to Practice published in April 2011, and, Your Personal Brand, Your Power Tool to Build Career Integrity, published in October 2016. Both are available via Amazon. Before joining Bizly, Kevin was Sr. VP at GoldSpring Consulting and VP of Industry Strategy at Lanyon, Active Network, and StarCite. As a buyer, he was a Sr. Global Category Manager for HP's global travel and meetings team and Sr. Travel Account Manager for Disney Worldwide Services. Kevin's journey Kevin received a scholarship from Hawaiian Airlines to attend the University of Hawaii's Travel Industry Management School and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in business. While at college, he made a living and contributed to his tuition fees by performing in nightclubs and working part-time for Hawaiian Airlines. His business degree helped him focus on the business side of his entertainment career. He did several recordings, collaborated with other local artists in Japan and California, and later created a label of his own. After retiring from live performing, he transitioned to a career in business travel, meetings, and events.  Regaining ownership Kevin recorded three vinyl albums. Many years later, he saw that others had placed his music online without his permission. During the pandemic, he finally had the chance to regain control by successfully monetizing his music after remixing and digitizing it, re-registering and re-copyrighting it, and then making it available on the internet. Racism In the 1980s, after moving to California, a high-profile manager informed Kevin that he would not represent him because there was no market for Asian or Pacific Islander performers. Kevin had grown up in Hawaii, where people were mostly Asian and Pacific Islanders. So that was the first time he ever encountered racism. Even though he chose to overlook that incident, he decided to stop performing, and look for something different.  From business travel to meetings and events Kevin moved into business travel and became a travel manager for various companies, including Walt Disney and Hewlett-Packard, where he successfully managed global travel programs for big corporations.  A corporate standard After that, he transitioned to meetings and events and wrote a book about initiating the Strategic Meetings Movement. He got a lot of recognition for that. Then he helped to institutionalize a corporate standard for how big corporations and enterprises should manage their meetings programs on a global level. After that, he took to the road to evangelize the corporate standard globally and won some awards along the way. The 9/11 President Two months after Kevin got elected as the president of the National Business Travel Association (now the Global Business Travel Association), 9/11 happened. The industry came to a halt, and Kevin and his board of directors managed to get business and leisure travel up and running again. Since then, he has become known as “The 9/11President”. No problem is unsolvable After pulling the travel industry out of the 9/11 global crisis, Kevin realized that no problem is unsolvable. Kevin's role at Bizly  As the Chief Customer Officer Head of Enterprise at Bizly, Kevin leads the customer and enterprise efforts and guides sales and customer success teams. Focusing on others Kevin has always focused on what is good for everyone else rather than what is good for him. Diversity equity and inclusion Kevin believes that DEI awareness occurs in people at different points in their careers. Some people get it when they experience racism directed toward them. Others get it after hitting a glass ceiling when trying to advance their careers and attributing it to racism. Overcoming scapegoating and racism Kevin points out that scapegoating is easy when people look different from you. People need to realize that second or third-generation Asian Americans are American on the inside.  Educating people about racism Kevin has realized that it is up to him to overcome his cultural programming, speak up, correct people, and take the time to educate racist individuals on why racism is not okay.  Representation Kevin feels that representation is essential for Asian American and Pacific Islander actors because, without it, most Asian American and Pacific Islander actors will never believe they can become lead actors. Fighting racism in the industry Representation starts with a voice. For Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to have a voice within the industry, associations, or corporations, there should be a sub or separate group that accepts responsibility for education and awareness.  Mentorship Mentorship programs are vital for creating easier paths to the top for underrepresented individuals.   Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website   Connect with Kevin Iwamoto On LinkedIn Bizly

Digital tools have transformed the car buying experience for drivers over the last twenty years. Most will routinely do their own research online before visiting their local dealer, but could the Metaverse further transform the process of browsing and purchasing your next vehicle? Sitecore's 2022 Perceptions of the Metaverse Report recently revealed that consumers are ready (and expect) to engage brands in new virtual environments. The company is also working with Honda to streamline the purchasing experience using a Metaverse that does not require strapping a clunky headset to your face. The concept promises to help make car configuration easier and more interactive. Drivers will be able to get all the information they need in a virtual world before completing the purchase. Ultimatley, technology is beginning to reimagine the traditional car dealership as an experience centre. I sit down with Aswin Mannepalli, Global Director, Industry Strategy and Marketing for (Automotive and Manufacturing) at Sitecore Symposium 2022 to explore how digital and metaverse experience tools can streamline the car buying process to ease the path to conversion.

The percentage of people who wish to own a motor vehicle is going down. That's because people want to only pay for mobility services when they need them. This is being viewed as a sign that we are becoming ready to welcome and adopt autonomous transportation. That is why mobility companies are at the forefront of the development of autonomous vehicles (AV). They want to make sure that the user experience is given a high priority in the process so as to attract as many clients as possible. In this lively Nomad Futurist podcast, Phil and Nabeel speak with KC Mares whose passionate interest in achieving energy efficiency has fueled a remarkable career in the data center space and beyond. Mares is a dynamic data center leader who has headed major development projects and data center builds for an impressive roster of companies including Google, Equinix and Yahoo. Recently he led design teams and achieved massive deployments of cutting-edge technology for Tesla.  Energy efficiency was an early calling. As a 12-year-old, Mares was already exploring renewable energy, having created an energy efficient building design for a national science fair. “Even then I could see that there were a lot of things we could do to improve the efficiency of transportation, of our buildings, and really, of our whole built environment.” His interests led him to pursue a double major in college: Oceanography (which encompassed studies in physics, chemistry, earth sciences) and business /accounting. After college, Mares jumped right into the world of business. “I wanted to change the world. I felt like we had to do something about making businesses more energy efficient.”  He immediately started considering which industries needed to address energy efficiency as it impacted their bottom line. Mares became a data center industry champion. “A fascinating thing about our industry is that it encompasses all kinds of different disciplines, from finance to sales to engineering and real estate.” Mares shares insights he's gained over the years including thoughts about serving communities in a holistic way.  “We really have to rethink how we're part of the community. A data center is not just an insular box totally isolated from the surrounding community. There's no point in a data center staying operational…if the entire community is down.” Mares advises data center HR teams to look for people with different backgrounds. “The more diversity we have in terms of professional and educational experiences, the better we become as an industry.” Mares is also always thinking about the future as it pertains to the end user.  “We need to be constantly iterating, changing, evolving, because we know that technology is evolving faster than our data centers are. So, let's adapt to that forward change and not keep doing things the same way. One of the things I've done throughout my career is making these paradigm shifts.”   His two pieces of advice for the young: “Keep an open mind to both the industry and the job that you're doing and try to focus on affecting the change that is important to you as a person. Find the place where you can make the biggest impact.” “Work with really smart, good people and collaborate with them and everybody owns their piece and grows together!”    KC Mares, currently Director, Industry Strategy for Data Centers at C-Power Energy Management, has focused on energy efficiency in data centers for over 20 years, with leadership over design, building and operating the lowest cost and most efficient data centers in over twenty countries. Mares has developed solutions for hyperscalers, tech companies and the largest providers, enterprises, and government data center operators. He has led the design of over $10 billion in data centers, driving industry leading energy and cost efficiencies. He also recently led factory engineering and battery cell production projects for Tesla.    Mares has chaired the SVLG Data Center Energy Efficiency demonstration program and summits, and prior to that the SVLG Energy Committee, helping create long-term clean energy solutions for California. When Yahoo was still the largest Internet property, Mares led its worldwide data center strategy, leading the construction of energy efficient data centers. His work has earned industry recognition, including two EnergyStar Partner of the Year awards.
