Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Emily Rowe. She graduated from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2004 with a doctorate degree in medicine. After a brief time in the field of Internal Medicine, she became frustrated with the Western approach to illness. She realized that she was being trained to treat the symptoms of disease and its end-stage complications, while failing to address its root cause. Inspired to find a comprehensive and definitive way to heal her patients, she went back to school and completed her Master's Degree in Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture (Master of Oriental Medicine) in 2009.   She and her husband, Christopher M. Estes MD, opened the Miami Beach Comprehensive Wellness Center in 2017. In this episode, Dr. Emily takes us through the intricate web of factors that affect our health, often lurking beneath the surface. She sheds light on the challenges of maintaining health, emphasizing how elevated toxic burdens or chronic infections can impact the body's pathophysiology, leading to issues like hormone imbalances and irregular blood sugar. Dr. Emily draws intriguing connections between heavy metal toxicity and cardiovascular problems, highlighting the role of metals as conductors that can disrupt the heart's electrical conductivity system, contributing to conditions like hypertension and atrial fibrillation. I use them most for GI vitamins and allergy screening. Much more affordable than a standard lab.  DNA heartworm testing-  I've sent to Canada in past- very tricky with customs. Apparently Auburn offers this test. Any vet can set up an account with Auburn's lab to be able to run the test. Ideal when pet parents choose not to use a preventative. Detects living heartworm DNA - positive much sooner than standard testing. Heartworm - Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Animalbiome.com is an excellent company. tons of high quality research on microbiome health in dogs and cats and specific research on gut health with raw fed animals. Pet parents can test their pet's biome. I tend to recommend this with all of my GI cases, chronic skin, immune health cases. Results vary a lot. Some pets have severe e-coli overloads and practically zero beneficial bacteria so they need fecal transplants and specific pre/probiotic and fiber sources. Inulin might be a better fiber source than psyllium in some cases. Some pets don't have pathogenic bacteria but they have no good flora so they will also need fecal transplants. Best to work with a vet when this is needed as most of my patients need more support when they are undergoing fecal transplant. I reach for S boullardi /FOS a lot. This is not found in standard small animal formulas. Their product line is amazing! Vax/Titers: puppy /kitten vaccine protocol with titer testing recommendations from Dr. Jean Dodd's foremost authority on endocrine disease and immunology in small animals. One of her projects is the rabies challenge fund. vaccine protocol | HemopetPuppies and kittens need their vaccine series per the protocol to protect them from deadly diseases. We think of these as core vaccinations. We start them earlier in Texas because of the much higher risk here. These vaccines are extremely effective. I usually run titers when the pet has already had one 3 year vaccine because they tend to be better protected and if they are protected, we can run the titers every 3 years when the vaccine would be due.  Rabies is a legal requirement to prevent human exposure to this deadly disease. We have  a lot of rabies in Texas! Every year, there is at least one pet dog and multiple kittens or adult cats who test positive for Rabies in Austin. They are tested because of human exposure and they are euthanized so their brain tissue can be tested :( All healthy pets should be vaccinated at least twice before titers are run.  Titers can still be run but many clinics won't accept the titers. I am rabies vaccinated because I used to work with wildlife. We tested our titers regularly and when they were low, we got a booster. This is standard practice in the human field and may someday be the standard with small animals.  Interceptor dose example: Sharing this with y'all so you can see the calculation for Interceptor (milbemycin oxime) **Please note- the chewable pill cannot be broken because the medication is not evenly distributed** Jax weighs 80 # We convert his weight to kg= 36.4kg 36.4 x 0.1mg/kg = 3.64 mg- this is the bare minimum dose to prevent heartworms. I don't like to have such a narrow margin in case the dog gains weight or there is resistance to the drug and because we can't break the tablet, so I tend to dose at 0.2mg/kg - 0.3 mg/kg (instead of 0.5mg/kg)  So, his more appropriate dose is 7.3 mg- we round up to 8mg.  The 50- 100# dose is 23mg.  The 26-50 # dose is 11.5mg. It's the next size down.  11.5mg divided by 36.4 = 0.3 mg/kg dose so we're good!Note: The lower dose does not protect against hookworms according to the study, so you would need to be aware of this. Any dog with a history of hookworms needs the higher dose until 100% clear on antigen testing.    This episode is sponsored by: Noble Origins, an animal-based organs focused company serving up Nose-To-Tail Protein With Organs, Collagen, & Colostrum. In this episode, Dr. Evan M. Rabinowitz, the founder of the Yao Shan Center for Chinese Medicine in Washington, DC, joins us for a conversation about acupuncture for menopause symptom treatment relief, the importance of treatment for the individual, how the body is an ecosystem and how holistic & Eastern medicine focus on addressing and balancing the entire system rather than just a single problematic issue.Acupuncture as a medical practice has existed for thousands of years and it used to be the predominant healing practice, yet the Western world still sees it as “alternative medicine.” Eastern medical practice is more than just sticking needles and mixing herbs together. Underneath lies a worldview that all living things are connected and that everything has its own course and cycle. This perspective brings a holistic approach to health and medicine, recognizing that changes in one part of the body or the external environment can cause seemingly unrelated symptoms. Dr. Rabinowitz has been in clinical practice for over 25 years, is a professor at Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts in Asheville, NC and a lecturer at Georgetown University School of Medicine's Integrative Medicine Program in Washington, DC. He's the former Director of Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH), where he helped create the University's Masters and Doctorate programs in East Asian Medicine during his eight-year tenure. He also taught and supervised Chinese herbal medicine at the Academy for Five Element Acupuncture in Gainesville, FL. He is a graduate of the George Washington University (B.A.), Traditional Acupuncture Institute (M.Ac.) and Maryland University of Integrative Health (D.Ac.). Dr. Rabinowitz maintains an active teaching schedule, offering continuing education for practitioners online and in-person across the US and internationally.Dr. Rabinowitz's goal is to see each person as unique and whole, and offer to them individualized, compassionate care for both chronic and acute pain. He has specialty training in gynecology seeing a broad range conditions throughout the lifecycle, including painful or irregular periods, fibroids and cysts (including PCOS), endometriosis and menopause related issues. In this episode, Dr. Rabinowitz discusses:The history and definition of acupunctureEastern medicine's approach to and treatment options for menopauseUnderstanding menopause from a holistic, empowering perspectiveFinding and receiving individualized treatment by a qualified, licensed practitionerDr. Rabinowitz also shares an empowering perspective for women: since puberty, our bodies have been working to sustain and bring new life. It's not been an easy path by any standards, with 3 strokes, which almost killed her. However it was a catalyst that brought about a slower life but perhaps a lot more contented life. Drawing from her powerful personal narrative, Suzanne unfolds her venture into holistic healing methods such as somatic therapy, breathwork, meditation, and particularly, amp coil, a therapy integrating sound and PEMF. Suzanne talks about her struggles with chronic conditions, including Lyme disease, and how she turned to alternative healing modalities such as somatic therapy, acupuncture, and energy healing to regain her health. She introduces the audience to the revolutionary amp coil, a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) device combined with sound therapy, and shares incredible stories of transformation, including her mother's remarkable recovery from osteoporosis. She brings to the fore the often ignored complexities faced by patients with unseen illnesses and the struggle of locating a healthcare provider who truly comprehends their plight.Complementing her storytelling, we delve into the science of how trauma resides in our cells and how therapeutic practices like energy healing, breathwork, and meditation can help release it. Whether you're looking for alternative healing methods, curious about the impact of lifestyle changes on health, or simply in need of some hope and inspiration, this episode with Suzanne Casamento promises an enlightening exploration. To learn more about Suzanne: https://www.suzannecasamento.com/ampcoil-PEMF-sessions-los-angeles Support the showWe hope you found the episode to be enlightening and insightful. Dr. Heart grew up in the western suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec with a BSc. in Biology in 1985. She went on to Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine located in Grafton, Massachusetts, receiving her DVM in 1991. Her career since graduation has been dedicated to working with sport horses all over the United States. In 2001 Dr Heart left the track to focus on other disciplines in the equine industry – a move motivated by the birth of her daughter Camille in 2000. She spent 6 years at a busy equine referral clinic in Illinois where she focused primarily on lameness. This move exposed her to the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques available in the sport horse industry. She was able to refine her skills in all imaging modalities and attend clinics devoted to lameness diagnosis and treatment.Dr. Heart began her training in Acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in 2003 with Dr Huisheng Xie DVM, MS, PhD. She completed her certification in Veterinary Acupuncture in 2005. She is currently working on her Masters in Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Chi Institute. She obtained her certification in Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (Also known as Animal Chiropractic) from the Healing Oasis Wellness Center in 2007 where she was trained by Pedro Rivera DVM. Rachel became certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) in 2008. She is currently completing a series of seminars on Postural Rehabilitation in Horses with Judith Shoemaker VMD and Karen Gellman DVM. She has also trained with Marvin Cain DVM (Acupuncture), Jean-Michel Boudard (Osteopathy), and Carl J. Join us on this enlightening journey with Dr. Emily as she uncovers the hidden factors affecting our health and provides valuable insights for a holistic approach to well-being. She emphasizes that elevated toxic burden or chronic infections can significantly impact the body's pathophysiology, leading to issues like hormone imbalances and blood sugar irregularities. Dr. Emily draws a connection between heavy metal toxicity and various cardiovascular problems. She notes that metals, acting as conductors, can disrupt the heart's electrical conductivity system, potentially contributing to conditions such as hypertension and atrial fibrillation. The importance of addressing chronic stealth infections, including Lyme, Bartonella, and mold, is underscored. These infections can play a crucial role in complex chronic medical illnesses, affecting various bodily functions. A combination of factors, such as traumatic events, environmental exposures, and unresolved emotional challenges, can contribute to the development of chronic illnesses. [17:10] Metals, Tea, and Health Threads: Navigating Risks Dr. Emily sheds light on the potential risks of being an avid tea drinker, especially when it comes to the interaction between tea's slight acidity and mercury from dental fillings. The Clifford test, exploring immune reactivity to metals, becomes a crucial tool in understanding allergic reactions.  There is a connection between tendinitis and heavy metal toxicity. Linking this to Chinese medicine, Dr. Emily notes the impact on the liver, which governs tendons and sinews. Exploring the intricate relationship between oxalates, heavy metals, and connective tissue, Dr. Emily warns against high oxalate diets. The combination can create a problematic mesh within connective tissue, emphasizing the importance of a gradual approach to removal due to potential health risks. [29:00] Decoding the Neurological Maze: Mold Exposure and Intricate Challenges Dr. Emily unravels the intricate relationship between mold exposure and neurological challenges, emphasizing the principle of "like dissolves like." Mold, being a fat-soluble toxin, particularly targets the brain and nerves composed of fat, often triggering peculiar neurological symptoms. Patients may present with nuanced diagnoses from neurologists, such as one-sided Parkinson's. Dr. Emily highlights the difficulty in addressing mold issues, urging patients to test their living environments first and foremost.  Despite the financial challenges, creating a mold-free environment or relocating becomes imperative for lasting recovery.  [43:15] The Power of Nitric Oxide: Dr. Emily's Exercise Insights In the pursuit of optimizing nitric oxide levels, Dr. Emily advocates for the unparalleled benefits of exercise as the foremost trigger.  Understanding the significance of mobility, Dr. Emily underscores the potential pitfalls of a sedentary lifestyle, emphasizing the link between inactivity and health issues, including the risk of nursing home admission.  Her insights serve as a reminder of the transformative power of exercise in promoting overall well-being, transcending physical limitations, and contributing to a healthier, more active life. [46:30] Unveiling Lyme Testing Realities: Dr. Emily's Journey Beyond Tick Bites In the realm of Lyme testing, Dr. Emily sheds light on a significant challenge: the prevalent use of standard methods like the Western Blot ELISA combo, which, astonishingly, misses 50% of cases.  Drawing from her personal experience, she shares a compelling narrative of grappling with Borrelia, Babesia, and Bartonella without a recollection of a tick bite. Exploring the possibility of Lyme transmission in utero, Dr. Emily delves into her childhood health struggles and autoimmune issues, unraveling the complex interplay between chronic infections and the immune system. Encouraging a shift in focus from emotional guilt to tangible solutions, Dr. Emily addresses the broader issue of environmental poisoning, urging individuals to acknowledge the harsh reality and take proactive steps toward better health.  Her insights serve as a beacon for those navigating the intricate landscape of Lyme disease and chronic infections. [53:50] Shedding Light on the Connection between Chickenpox, Shingles, and Epstein Barr Dr. Emily unravels the connection between childhood infections, immune suppression, and virus reactivation, particularly in the case of chickenpox and Epstein Barr.  Chickenpox, a common childhood ailment, can resurface as shingles later in life, especially during periods of immune suppression, forming a part of the 'Perfect Storm' scenario. Epstein Barr, a member of the herpes virus family, stays dormant in the body after causing conditions like mono during adolescence. Factors like living in a moldy environment, elevated heavy metal toxicity, and contracting COVID can trigger Epstein Barr reactivation, manifesting primarily as fatigue and brain fog. AND MUCH MORE!
