In 1979, 2 Tone Records (formed by Coventry, England art student and Specials keyboardist/songwriter Jerry Dammers) exploded into the consciousness of music lovers in Britain, the US, and beyond, as albums by the Specials, the Selecter, Madness, the Beat, and the Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was black and white: a multiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues, racism, class, and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against right-wing extremism. It was exuberant and eclectic: white youths learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae, crossed with punk attitude, to create an original hybrid. This week's Third Lad, Daniel Rachel, has penned the definitive story of the label that, for a brief, bright burning moment, shaped British, American, and world culture. Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story is out now from White Rabbit (UK) and Akashic Books (US). Daniel Rachel is a Birmingham-born, best-selling author whose previous works include Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters; Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism, 2 Tone, and Red Wedge; Don't Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia; The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn't Split Up?; One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene; and Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever. He is also co-author of Ranking Roger's autobiography, I Just Can't Stop It: My Life in the Beat. Since the group formed in 1989, they have released eleven studio albums including the million-selling Moseley Shoals and the number one Marchin' Already. Their run of twenty successive Top 20 singles includes the era-defining ‘The Riverboat Song', ‘The Circle' ‘The Day We Caught The Train' and ‘Hundred Mile High City' (as featured in the film Lock Stock & Two Shooting Barrels).  The band and Paul Weller have had so many connections over the years - playing on each other's records, hanging out, music videos and TV promo appearances, playing live together and on supporting slots - not least with Steve Cradock and Damon Minchella joining Paul's band for such long periods too (Steve has been with Paul for around 30 years now!). Tom Service talks to the pianist Piotr Anderszewski about a new album he’s recorded and edited featuring Bach's preludes and fugues – a project undertaken during lockdown. He reflects how the quest to achieve perfection is one of the drives that still keeps him searching, as well as what he describes as the need to 'tame the beast' – his piano. The scholar Laura Tunbridge, expert on 19th-Century lieder, reviews 'The Songs of Fanny Hensel', a new collection of essays edited by Stephen Rodgers about this pioneering composer and sister of Felix Mendelssohn, who remains mostly undiscovered. We hear from the violinist Maxim Vengerov about his latest project, an educational website designed to give masterclasses to both his regular students at prestigious institutions.... and any players from around the world who subscribe and who are selected for free lessons from an open lottery. We learn about the touching stories behind the first two winners. And we take a look at two projects aiming to engage young audiences and bring them to Classical Music, including 'Classics Explained' – a YouTube channel dedicated to short video animations that throw light on the greatest pieces of the classical repertoire; and a new radio station for children, 'Fun Kids Classical', which is reviewed by radio critic, journalist and broadcaster, Gillian Reynolds.
