Phil and Emily are joined by journalist and author Josephine Riesman to continue their Richard Kelly Reichardt mini-series with the magnificent disaster that is Southland Tales (2006). And there is no better guest for it: Josie wrote the definitive deep-dive on this movie and once spent three hours walking Venice Beach interviewing Richard Kelly himself.Set in an alternate 2008 where nuclear attacks on Texas have tipped America into a surveillance-state apocalypse, Southland Tales unleashes Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Justin Timberlake, and a cast of SNL alumni across a sprawling, end-of-days Los Angeles on the Fourth of July. It premiered at Cannes as an unfinished cut on DVD, got booed into oblivion, made a legendary $374,000 against a $17 million budget, and then quietly became the cult object that fans swear is more true than the reality we actually got.The gang digs into why a movie this incoherent is also this irresistible. Emily makes her case that it is what you would get if Philip K. Dick novelized Robert Altman's Nashville, while Phil counters with "Magnolia with a head injury." Josie reveals what Kelly told her about that surreal Justin Timberlake lip-sync to The Killers, the tie-in graphic novels, the Cannes catastrophe, and why he has a reason for every baffling choice, even the ones that never made the final cut. Plus its eerie kinship with Children of Men and The Handmaid's Tale, and the thin line between satire and prophecy.Misunderstood masterpiece or beautiful trainwreck? On America's 250th birthday, it might be the only movie that fits. This is the way the world ends.Follow the show & guests:Podcast Like It's... — https://www.instagram.com/podcastlikeitsPhil Iscove — https://www.instagram.com/pmiscoveEmily St. James — https://www.instagram.com/emilystjamsJosephine Riesman — [handle?]
Cheri talks about growing up in a rough house with a lot of kids and a young mom and pretending to escape and maybe grab some attention. She talks about imitating TV shows, soap operas and Joe Cocker. She talks about moving from Pennsylvania to California to pursue dreams of acting after a break-up and found herself in the heart of Panorama City nowhere near Hollywood. Later she found early success in LA @ A&M RECORDS. In fact she was so successful it was a little hard to give it up when it was time to start performing full time after she became a star at THE GROUNDLINGS. She talks about how her writing at The Groundlings helped her at SNL. How Laraine Newman was always encouraging even while breast feeding. How Matt Piedmont and Will Ferril were great writing partners. How sitcoms are pure fun. And how making charcuterie boards with vaguely dirty names is going to change the world for the better. Bio: Cheri Oteri was born in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia and later moved to LA, where she worked in promotions for A&M Records. She joined the Groundlings, and in 1995, the producers of Saturday Night Live saw one of her monologues, which led to an audition and eventually being hired as a cast member, where she starred for five seasons. As of late, Cheri can be seen recurring on Happy's Place for NBC, Mid Century Modern for HULU as well as in And Just Like That… for MAX. She has also appeared in several films, including Scary Movie, Inspector Gadget, Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumberer,Shrek the Third, Southland Tales, and Grown Ups 2. In 2009, Oteri became a regular voice on Fox's animated comedy series Sit Down, Shut Up, which later moved to Comedy Central. She also voiced “Esther” on Disney's Puppy Dog Pals. Cheri has made multiple guest appearances on sitcoms such as The CW's My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, TruTV's Those Who Can't, NBC's Just Shoot Me! (in which she was nominated for an Emmy), Hot in Cleveland, and as an emotionally unstable nanny on the Golden Globe and Emmy award winning series Curb Your Enthusiasm. She has appeared multiple times on CNN's New Year's Eve Live with Anderson Cooper & Andy Cohen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I've got soul, but I'm not a soldier, I'm a podcaster! Kurt and Nick are back on the show to talk about this absolutely insane movie. Richard Kelly's follow-up to his cult hit Donnie Darko. Is it unwieldy, convoluted, and nearly incomprehensible at times? Yeah, man. But if you read the three graphic novels first, maybe it makes more sense. Or maybe it doesn't They talk about it, so check it out!

PENDENTE: Rubrica su Cinema, letteratura, fumetto ed esperienze culturali
Benvenuti in America.
I love this week's BEHIND THE LENS, and my interview with writer/director PAUL BOYD talking about his new film SCARED TO DEATH. In this exclusive conversation, Paul dives deep into the making of his horror-comedy SCARED TO DEATH, a self-described "love letter to horror movies" that blends satire, absurdity, and genuine genre reverence. We explore the film's genesis and how the film uses a haunted-house movie-within-a-movie setup to examine belief, fear, masks people wear, and the absurdities of Hollywood itself. Paul details the personal inspirations behind the story (including buying a supposedly haunted house once owned by Charlie Chaplin), the joyful collaboration with his cast and crew, and the deliberate balance of scares, humor, and emotional undercurrents. As you'll hear, we break down the visual grammar and Paul's work with cinematographer Steven Poster, whose work all of you are well familiar with – DONNIE DARKO, SOUTHLAND TALES, LIFE STINKS, ROCKY V, NEXT OF KIN, REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE, and more, and how they developed a color palette, lenses used, dutching, angles, POV, etc. And how about Paul's work with editor Ed Shiers who just happens to also be a drummer with an incredible sense of rhythm, something that comes in handy with editing? Plus, Misha Segal's score AND Kurt Diemer's end credit song "Scared to Death", which is fantastic. And you'll hear Paul talk about the location house in Altadena where the film was shot. The first home ever built in Altadena, and one of the only homes to survive the Altadena fires last year, and you'll find out how it lucked out. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

***I don't like doing disclaimers on episodes and this one isn't totally filthy or anything but there is some explicit dialogue in the film that we discuss, so if you listen in the car with other people or whatever, you've been warned***"This is the way the world ends. Not with a whimper, but with a bang."There are a handful of movies that I've specifically wanted to cover on the show from the very beginning and today we're checking a big one off of the list. Richard Kelly blew up on the scene with his debut feature Donnie Darko. It was a massive cult hit that earned him the attention and favor of both audiences and filmmakers. So much so that he was allowed to make one of the wildest (complimentary) movies of the aughts, with an absolutely stacked cast of stars like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Sean William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mandy Moore, and Justin Timberlake as well as several SNL alumni (and Will Sasso). The plot of the film is hard to convey briefly (thought Kev does a wonderful job at the top of our discussion) but suffice it to say it's about post 9/11 America and the ways we may destroy ourselves. Send us a textSome records feel like they were built to survive the algorithm. by them, by you, by me is one of them. We sit down with Harmless to unpack how an album can be both tighter and fuller by saying no—no to bloat, no to trend-chasing, and yes to constraints, honesty, and the strange joy of finishing a thing even when life gets heavy. We start with the “gospel” works that shaped his taste: American Movie as the patron saint of do-it-anyway creativity; Southland Tales as a teenage obsession that taught him to defend bold art on its own terms; and the secret world of what.cd, where lossless rips, vinyl transfers, and deep threads turned ambient, experimental, and electronic music into a lifelong compass. Those influences explain the album's texture: guitar-forward songs with an electronic brain, humble tools used with intent, and arrangements that feel tactile rather than crowded. The conversation also digs into the hardest parts. Harmless talks candidly about grief during production, turning in the most “noteless” record of his career, and rediscovering the peace of process over outcomes. We explore how House of Leaves mirrors internet-shaped storytelling, why The Larry Sanders Show remains the blueprint for ambitious, unlikable, deeply human art, and how an ADHD-friendly studio ritual—loop a take while a comfort show plays silently—can unlock flow when pressure spikes. We tackle AI and the future of music with clear-eyed optimism: technology will keep changing the tools, but people still gather around story, myth, and the watercooler. The work that lasts is the work that lets us talk to each other. If you're craving a thoughtful, funny, and grounded look at taste, constraints, and creative resilience, this one's for you.If the episode resonates, tap follow, share it with a friend who loves discovering new artists, and leave a quick review—then tell us the “gospel” film or record that shaped your taste.Follow My Pop Five: @mypopfive on all platforms We'll see you next time. This week Graham takes Joe on an inexplicable journey through Richard Kelly's Southland Tales, a film about porn stars, an amnesiac actor, the Book of Revelations, and so many other goddamn things that this could turn into a James Joyce-esque description if we hit each beat. So buckle up for opinions as divergent as Dwayne Johnson's acting abilities and get ready for some Fluid Karma as we try and parse through the madness of this sci-fi/action/drama/politcal satire from 2006. Will Joe be Left Behind or will he accept his role in all of the whirling chaos? Tune in to find out!

Richard Kelly took the world by storm with his debut feature Donnie Darko. There was a lot of expectation on his follow-up Southland Tales, a film that seemed to promise even more originality and mind-bending antics. We're finally talking about Southland Tales, the first-ever Dwayne Johnson (not "The Rock") movie, and we're joined by Resident Historian Mike Manzi! After trying to parse the dense and complicated narrative in this movie, we talk about the critical reaction to the film as well as why this doesn't feel like a bomb/spectacular failure. Mike talks about the graphic novel accompaniments for this movie, we all explore the prescience of this movie, and Joey shares the wild backstory of Freddie Prinze, Jr. (and his ties to this movie). What kind of filmmaker could make a movie like this? We discuss. We also heap praise on Sarah Michelle Gellar and wonder: does Francis Ford Coppola love this movie? In the riveting Part 6A of "No Way, Jose!", titled "The Memory Gospel," host Jose Galison delves into Dr. Wendy Painting's latest research on the Oklahoma City Bombing, focusing on the enigmatic encounter between Timothy McVeigh, Terry Nichols, and the mysterious "Jacques" at Maloney's Realty in Cassville, Missouri. Dr. Painting meticulously recaps the accounts of three realty employees and the FBI's subsequent investigation, which included the extraordinary use of a military psychologist specializing in intelligence and counter-intelligence to hypnotize one witness. The episode explores anomalies in the Jacques investigation, particularly the FBI's handling of a composite drawing of Jacques, marked as "NEED TO KNOW," and questions the agency's decisions and apparent oversights. Through close reading and literary deconstruction, Dr. Painting dissects the witnesses' statements and media coverage, revealing inconsistencies that challenge later attempts to debunk the Maloney incident and expose weaknesses in the FBI's approach.Jose Galison guides listeners through Dr. Painting's analysis, which highlights how changes in the Maloney witnesses' accounts over time undermine debunking efforts and point to deeper issues in the investigation. The title "The Memory Gospel" pays homage to the 2006 film Southland Tales, a personal touchstone for Dr. Painting that resonates with the themes of memory and manipulation in this thread. "NWJ 581" offers a thought-provoking exploration of these overlooked aspects of the OKC bombing case, questioning the official narrative and inviting listeners to reconsider the significance of the Jacques encounter. Tune in to "No Way, Jose!" for a compelling dive into Dr. Painting's research, as Jose unpacks the complexities of memory, evidence, and investigation in one of America's most haunting tragedies. Please consider supporting my work-Patreon- https://www.patreon.com/nowayjose2020Only costs $2/month and will get you access to episodes earlier than the publicNo Way, Jose! TOTAL MASSACRE's Fiasco month concludes with Southland Tales, Richard Kelly's 2006 disasterpiece of a followup to Donnie Darko. It's a movie that's very angry about George W Bush, ineffective liberals, racist cops, and rampant nationalist consumerism, and boy does it want to deal with all those things at once, with wildly varying effectiveness. We talk about Sarah Michelle Gellar, SNL alumni, Amy Poehler's too-fast death, the mid-2000s liberal blogosphere, Barack Obama, Wallace Shawn as a Final Fantasy villain, Bai Ling as ..... some character, and whether The Rock was ready for this kind of stardom. And a lot more. There's so much movie in this movie!
If loving something ironically brings you real joy, is it still ironic? Who knows. But Auteur director Richard Kelly forces us to look into the depths of the black pool in our episode this week on his sophomore film "Southland Tales", where you will be forced to ask yourself such deep questions as "wait, what's that guy's name?"

Do you remember Donnie Darko? We reviewed it years ago and were pretty torn on whether it was good or not. Well, the disagreements are back as this week we're reviewing Richard Kelly's big follow-up to that movie... It's 2006's Southland Tales! It's an epic mystery thriller where Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has to figure out what's going on with the plot of this film. That sounds like a joke on how hard this movie is to follow, but it's also a pretty good synopsis as to what this thing is about. This week on Saturday Night Jive we watched Thomas And The Magic Railroad from 2000 starring 17-time SNL host Alec Baldwin as Mr. Conductor. So this was a huge mistake. Turns out this movie isn't interested in helping you understand what the hell is going on so we spend the majority of the podcast simply confused by the lore of magical trains who don't move their mouths when they talk. We also had no idea this was related to Shining Time Station starring George Carlin and Ringo Starr as Mr. Conductor, we thought that was a different thing. It could be a totally different thing, this could have nothing to do with anything, we have no clue and the movie doesn't seem to either. Help us construct this 1,000 shit puzzle as this is the most perplexing movie we've watched since Southland Tales. A Primetime Emmy Award nominee best known for her tenure as a cast member of the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 1995-2000. Cheri began her career in Promotions for A&M records for 4 years and joined up with the Groundlings, an improv-sketch comedy group based in LA. One night, a Saturday Night Live rep attended a performance with the intention of auditioning fellow Groundlings member Chris Kattan. Oteri performed a monologue during one of Kattan's costume changes, which led to her own invitation to audition for SNL where she played stand out comic characters such as Barbara Walters, Arianna an overly spirited Spartan Cheerleader with Will Ferrell, Rita DelVecchio, a grouchy Philadelphia woman who is mean to the neighborhood children; Cass Van Rye, the dim-witted co-host of the “Morning Latte” talk show; Nadeen, a testy employee whose catchphrase constantly orders everyone to "Simmer down now!"; Althea McMahonaman, an absurdly hyper child who is an awful passenger and disturbs public servants; Collette Reardon, a prescription pill-addict; Joy Lipton, Erotic Attic boutique owner; Adele, a vulgar and highly sexual office worker whose attempts at sexual innuendos disgust rather than attract her colleagues; Laura Zimmerman, one half of the Zimmermans, who suddenly break into rough and sexual behavior before returning to casual conversation as if nothing happened (with Chris Kattan). Oteri has appeared in a number of movies, including Scary Move, Inspector Gadget, Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Llyod, Shrek the Third and Southland Tales.

Reviled upon its first release, Richard Kelly's dystopian sci-fi satire SOUTHLAND TALES (2006) has earned a cult following that sees in it a prophetic vision. We wade through the soup of its sounds and images and debate what, if anything, this collection of late-Bush-era sounds and images is saying. This one has been a long time coming, folks! This is an Operation Podcast production, connect with us @operationpodcast. Prepare yourself for a profound journey of love and self-discovery with my guest Perry Farrell. As artists, we explore the transformative power of love and fear and how these emotions shape our world. Together, we step into a new era, one defined by brotherly love and grace. We discuss the Noahide codes, divine rules that hold the potential to unify religions and heal our fracturing world. We then traverse the global stage, drawing inspiration from the rich cultures around the world and their deep impact on humanity and how material possessions often serve to fill emotional voids. As we journey further into the realm of creativity, Perry and I delve into the power of artistic collaboration and the importance of ego dissolution. We conclude by exploring the evolution of an artist, striking a balance between staying true to oneself and maintaining creative fluidity. How does Perry define living a life through love? “When I wake up in the morning, I pray. When I pray, I study and I read about the universe and I read about the different heavens and the different worlds, what's going on in all of them and why we're here. And we are here to definitely spread love.” So, are you ready to redefine your perspective on love, fear, and art? Let's start this journey together. ----- Key Highlights Perry's lifelong studies of mysticism and spirituality The Noahide Codes and the Angel Gabriel Discovering India and synthesizing the animal with the Divine Exploring love and overcoming fear The importance of ego dissolution Collaboration and love's transformative power Creating Lollapalooza ----- Follow Perry @perryfarrellofficial About the guest: Perry Farrell is the lead singer of the iconic American rock bands Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros. He is an actor and composer, known for Twilight, Southland Tales and The Cable Guy. He has been married to Etty Lau since 2002. They have two children. ----- Love Notes from Perry: It would serve all of us well to collaborate and bring in more and more people to help… It makes the end product even better. To know thyself is really to know God. ----- Follow Ruben on Instagram Watch and subscribe to Live Through Love on YouTube
PUBLIC VERSION. Actor Seann William Scott (the AMERICAN PIE franchise, FINAL DESTINATION, ICE AGE, GOON, THE RUNDOWN, ROLE MODELS, JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK, SOUTHLAND TALES, ROAD TRIP, DUDE WHERE'S MY CAR?, and more) joins Adam and Arwen to discuss his career journey and the making of his latest film THE WRATH OF BECKY (now in US theaters and available soon on digital)! From a high school athlete in Minnesota who loved movies… to the local talent agency that helped him get started and find a manager in Los Angeles… to the struggle of simply getting himself to auditions all over LA when he didn't own a car… to booking commercials, small speaking parts, and a role in an AEROSMITH video… to landing the role of “Stifler” in what would become the hugely successful AMERICAN PIE series… to being beheaded in FINAL DESTINATION, fighting The Rock and swimming in frigid waterfalls in THE RUNDOWN, learning how to ice skate AFTER landing the lead role in GOON, portraying an ex-military, alt-right militia leader in THE WRATH OF BECKY, and everything in between… Seann has been keeping the world entertained for over 2 decades. Best of all, he's remained the same down to earth, small town guy despite the awe inspiring 6 BILLION + that his filmography has generated at the box office so far. Joe unfortunately had to miss this one but Adam and Seann become BFFs by the end of this candid conversation with a surprising revelation at the end!
