How Britain Found Its “Great” (And Lost It, Found It Again, and Keeps Trying)

A Cultural Manifesto of Identity, Irony, and ReinventionWhat does it mean to be "Great" — and can a nation ever truly stay that way?In this lyrical and story-driven episode, Roy Sharples explores Britain's ongoing identity quest: from the rise of empire to the chaos of Brexit, from punk rock to AI labs, Shakespeare to Stormzy. This is not a love letter to nostalgia, but a poetic reckoning with what greatness means in the modern age — eccentric, inventive, resilient, and gloriously self-deprecating.Why is British greatness not about power, but reinvention? What connects Shakespeare, tea, punk, and Brexit? Can a country be culturally radical while politically confused? From the fog-draped roots of its past to the technicolor contradictions of its present, Britain isn't marching — it's muddling through. Still trying. Still adapting. Still Great — on its own peculiar terms.Support the showAttitude. Imagination. Execution. Create Without Frontiers.

Summer nostalgia hits different when it comes with a side of hope for devoted J-pop fans. Sarah and Panic serve up a deliciously meandering conversation that begins with seasonal treats but evolves into something much more exciting for Arashi followers.Remember those perfect Ben & Jerry's flavors that disappeared from freezers forever? We take a deep dive into the "Flavor Graveyard," mourning lost treasures like Rainforest Crunch, Cool Britannia, and Wavy Gravy. The passionate debate about these frozen delights reveals how certain foods become time capsules for specific moments in our lives - and why we're still grieving discontinued pints decades later. But the temperature in the studio rises when we discuss recent appearances by Ninomiya on Japanese variety shows. During a dinner with members of Snowman, he dropped what might be the most tantalizing hints yet about an Arashi comeback. His coy response when directly asked about future concerts - "Well, I guess so. We probably should" - has us analyzing every word and facial expression. With Arashi's anniversary approaching in November, could this be the moment fans worldwide have been waiting for? From ice cream memories to concert whispers, this episode captures the bittersweet feeling of longing - for discontinued treats, for travel adventures, and for the return of beloved performers. What flavor memories transport you back in time? It only took us eight years but we finally reached 150 episodes. How about that? To celebrate, we squeeze into matching Union Jack dresses and slam our bodies down and wind them all around to discuss Spice World (1997), the notoriously bad (but secretly good?) Spice Girls movie.   To elder millennials, this movie's a big honking deal, folks, and we pull out all the stops to unpack exactly why that is. Oasis was one of the world's biggest bands in the 90s and 2000s. Led by main songwriter and lead guitarist Noel Gallagher and lead singer Liam Gallagher, the band achieved heights rarely seen. But in the UK, Oasis were about as big as The Beatles and were the soundtrack to a moment in time around Cool Britannia and forward looking socioeconomic and political change at the time. Though they didn't become nearly as popular in the US, they attracted a core fan base including The Wolf (eventually). We've done shows in the past on the difference between the band's success in the US vs. the UK (episode 78). When they announced 14 dates (now 17) in 5 cities in the UK and Ireland on August 27, it was the biggest news around the world. So we felt compelled to give you our Hot Take reactions to the announcement, when and where they were playing, how we could attempt to get tickets, who will be playing in the band (Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs and Gem Archer have been confirmed) and where they might go after those initial dates. As some additional information has come out since we recorded our Hot Take, we address that news at the end of the show. We're beyond excited for this reunion but worried we might be left out in the cold on tickets! Should we pay way too much for 2nd hand tickets and see their first few shows before they breakup? The prime minister followed Tuesday's Oasis-fuelled Cool Britannia nostalgia with a rather gloomier vision of Britain in 2024 – with a speech that heaped blame on the last government for the tough choices to come. So will things only get worse? The Guardian's Jess Elgot joins the podcast team to respond to Keir Starmer's speech – and look ahead to Monday's return of parliament. The failure to fix the housing crisis stretches way back to the 1990s – so why have successive governments failed to build the homes the country needs? A new IfG report takes a tour through history – and has some solutions for the future. Plus: What is like to be a minister who takes maternity leave – and is the system working? Another new IfG report speaks to six former ministers. Hannah White presents, with Jess Elgot, Joe Owen, Sophie Metcalfe and Nicola Blacklaws Produced by Podmasters Learn more about your ad choices. Would anyone have voted Labour if they had put in their manifesto that they wanted to ban smoking outside pubs, Cut Winter fuel payments, not sort out the boats, would try to rejoin the EU by the back door, and thought that the majority of us are racist? With Noel and Liam back its like a return to the nineties with Blair but at least with Cool Britannia and "Things can only get better" Blair sold us hope and a bright future. But Starmer has no vision, he is the Mr Magoo of Britsh politics. He wants 10 years to fix Britain but he will be lucky to get 10 months. Everyone is getting sent to Prison except a bloke who threw objects at Nigel Farage. Then they try and tell us we don't have a two tier society. I am really angry, so don't bother listening if you're sensitive because I am looking back in real anger!  If you want to support me please go to  buymeacoffee.com/Jongaunt

#underconsumptioncore is a thing! For this episode, we're in London visiting British journalist Tiffanie Darke to talk about her viral wardrobe challenge, The Rule of Five. She's also got a new book coming out in the US. What to Wear and Why, Your Guilt-Free Guide to Sustainable Fashion promises to get you "rethinking what clothes we buy, wear, and toss out, knowing that we can have a positive environmental impact while still looking good and dressing well”.It was during the pandemic, when Tiffanie was working at Harrod's, as the editor of that famed luxury department store's magazine, when she had a revelation. Mindless shopping felt meaningless. Then she read a shocking report by the Hot or Cool Institute - Unfit, Unfashionable, Unfair revealed that if we're serious about climate action, those of us in the global north/rich countries are going to have to have to drastically reduce our consumption. Of everything! So how much new fashion is sustainable if we want to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees? Buying just five new garments a year. Yikes! This is the story of how one woman set out to do that, and catalysed a movement along the way. Also up for discussion, who's to blame for the mess we find ourselves in? Could it be Gen X, those formerly hedonistic Cool Britannia types? After all, they were the first fast fashion fans…Can you help us spread the word ?Wardrobe Crisis is an independent production.

In 1979, 2 Tone Records (formed by Coventry, England art student and Specials keyboardist/songwriter Jerry Dammers) exploded into the consciousness of music lovers in Britain, the US, and beyond, as albums by the Specials, the Selecter, Madness, the Beat, and the Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was black and white: a multiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues, racism, class, and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against right-wing extremism. It was exuberant and eclectic: white youths learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae, crossed with punk attitude, to create an original hybrid. This week's Third Lad, Daniel Rachel, has penned the definitive story of the label that, for a brief, bright burning moment, shaped British, American, and world culture. Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story is out now from White Rabbit (UK) and Akashic Books (US). Daniel Rachel is a Birmingham-born, best-selling author whose previous works include Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters; Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism, 2 Tone, and Red Wedge; Don't Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia; The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn't Split Up?; One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene; and Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever. He is also co-author of Ranking Roger's autobiography, I Just Can't Stop It: My Life in the Beat. Oasis in the UK are more than just rock royalty. They are the foul-mouthed, big riff, council estate kids with unibrows and bad attitudes that helped lift the UK out of it's 1980's/Thatcherism malaisse and into the Cool Britannia of the 1990s. Out was the doom and gloom of American grunge, in were melodic songs that kids could relate to. Anthems like Rock N Roll Star, Columbia and Cigarettes and Alcohol spoke directly to the young generation who were anxious to make their own mark on the world. Led by the songwriting and riff borrowing of Noel Gallagher and the sheer strength of the vocals of his younger brother Liam, Oasis debut Definitely Maybe became the fastest selling debut album in the UK at the time. However, in the US, though Oasis debut hit the charts and eventually went platinum, the band never took off to the heights they would enjoy in the UK and around the world. Maybe it was Creation Records lack of solid backing by the US record industry or maybe it was the brothers snarling and nasty attitudes (and those unibrows) that turned enough people off during the age of grunge that would soon give way to softer sounds like Hootie and the Blowfish. But Oasis were the spokesmen of their generation in the UK and knew who to borrow from (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, T Rex, The Jam) to make a big, bright, loud sound that would have them headline Knebworth just 2 years after the release of this debut in front of 250,000 people over 2 nights. Oasis are also the masters of the b-side (a lost art in the US) and as CD singles with 4 tracks on them were all the rage, Oasis hit the playlists and sales from singles as well as anyone in the UK. So relive the big hits (Live Forever & Supersonic), enjoy the album tracks (Slide Away, Bring It On Down) and unearth some b-sides as we celebrate Definitely Maybe as it turns 30. Stone Temple Pilots helped define the grunge-ridden days of the 1990s with their big downtuned riffs and lyrics soaked in heroin resin. Riding the wave from Seattle, their debut album Core sold over 8 million copies in the US alone. The record company couldn't wait to get more STP out into the market so in November 1993 they released the live Unplugged album featuring the new song Big Empty. Vocalist/lyricist Scott Weiland was a charismatic and troubled performer, writing lyrics about fear, self-loathing and ruined relationships built on his addiction to heroin. But STP were more than just a grunge band as Dean and Robert De Leo wrote great songs full of melody and cool changes in tempo and delivery. Purple, their second effort, included songs like Interstate Love Song and Vaseline scored high on the charts and while some of the songs were definitely grungy (Meatplow), they showed they can deliver a straight-ahead rockers (Unglued) and lighter songs with heavy themes. The album went to #1 in the US and would go on to sell over 6 million copies. While the UK were enthralled with the Cool Britannia acts like Oasis, Blur and The Verve, hard rock and grunge bands took over the US and Stone Temple Pilots were among the most successful. But were they really a grunge band? Did Weiland have talent beyond the creativity that flowed from his narcotic visions? Were they a band of the time or of all time? The Italian Job (1969) is the epitome of what would become Cool Britannia. It celebrates its 55th anniversary this year, and has lost none of its Britishness. In fact, for the quintessentially British cult classic, they had to have the cool car of the 1960s youth - the Mini - for the quintessential British heist.Setting the film in Turin also gave them the bonus of having access to Fiat's locations and vehicles. Fiat and the city of Turin were incredibly welcoming to the production, despite all the chaos caused by filming. Fiat would also offer a huge cash incentive to swap the British Leyland Minis for Fiat 500s. Obviously that never happened! While it would flop in the US, The Italian Job remains an icon of cinema in the UK, and although Paramount insisted the movie was in debt, they were still keen to remake it in 2003...The Italian Job (2003) would show a character watching The Italian Job, while having characters named after characters from The Italian Job, and referencing "The Italian Job" as the inspiration for their own heist that's remarkably similar to The Italian Job's Italian Job, without being an Italian Job that's actually set in an Italian city. You'd think its writing team had never seen the original before... and you'd be correct! This version of The Italian Job would have its own pioneering stunts though, including the creation of the first ever electric powered BMW MINIs...I would love to hear your thoughts on The Italian Job (1969) & The Italian Job (2003) !CONTACT.... In this episode, I am delighted to interview Pete Brooker (From Tailors With Love) about his work about the forthcoming memoir of Timothy Everest MBE.Boy Wanted on Savile Row is a revealing memoir that charts the evolution of British tailoring over the past four decades, starting in the 1980s, when Timothy Everest MBE studied under the rebel of Savile Row, Tommy Nutter, and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Steve Strange and Boy George among the New Romantics club scene.Branching out on his own in the ‘90s, Everest initially styled bands and pop stars, such as George Michael, before he became the spearhead of the ‘Cool Britannia' generation and the face of the New Bespoke Movement. His many bespoke clients included Tom Cruise, David Beckham, Mick Jagger and Jay-Z, to name a few. Eventually he would turn his hand to tailoring for films, such as the James Bond and Mission Impossible franchises, and would create some truly iconic suits.Featuring a wealth of celebrity anecdotes, both hilarious and tragic, Boy Wanted on Savile Row leads the reader through a landscape of bespoke British tailoring that would change the way we view and buy our clothes forever. The book is available for pre-order on Amazon, now.You can find Pete on Instagram and Youtube: @FromTailorsWithLoveMessage me anytime on Instagram, @FlemingNeverDies, or e-mail: AlbionNeverDies@gmail.comCheck out my https://www.youtube.com/britishcultureCheck out my Red Bubble shopSubscribe to my newsletter for update e-mails, random postcards, and stickers: https://youtube.us9.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=b3afdae99897eebbf8ca022c8&id=5165536616Support the show

At the height of the ‘Cool Britannia' craze, the Spice Girls released their first movie, ‘Spice World', with a glittering premiere at the Empire Leicester Square, on 15th December, 1997. Geri, Emma, Victoria, Mel B, and Mel C donned pinstripe suits with boosted cleavage; attendees included the Prince of Wales; and their on-screen co-stars included Meat Loaf, Richard E Grant, Roger Moore, and Elton John.  The film, made for a budget of just $5m and with a production schedule of just one year, had been written by Kim Fuller, who drew inspiration from The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night", infusing the sketches that formed the screenplay with self-knowing British humour. In this episode, Arion (WHO WAS AT THE AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE, WHAT?!), Rebecca and Olly consider whether a movie like ‘Spice World' could still be made today; explain how the internet came to the rescue when it came to filming at the Albert Hall; and marvel at the eccentric characterisation of its five key protagonists… Further Reading: • ‘‘We ran out of parts for people': How Spice World became the ‘must be in' movie of the Nineties' (The Independent, 2022): https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/spice-girls-spice-world-movie-songs-b2251622.html • 'Inside the Absolutely Impossible, Iconic ‘Spice World' Bus, 25 Years Later' (Vanity Fair, 2023): https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2023/01/inside-spice-world-bus-25-years-later • ‘Spice World: The Movie (U.S. Trailer)' (Columbia Pictures, 1997): (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmSBtOHzGPM #90s #Film #Music #UK We'll be back on Monday - unless you join

Blank Check with Griffin & David

UK house music, a *very* active camera, and Ewan McGregor looking like a SNACK…that's right, folks - we're covering Danny Boyle! With the England bit retired, we're finally giving dual citizen David Sims the time and space to actually reminisce about his very British upbringing. A sensation in the UK upon release, SHALLOW GRAVE introduced Boyle as the cinematic voice of “Cool Britannia” - yet the film remains an under-seen gem in the States. In this episode, the boys discuss what they would do with a dead body (wouldn't cut it up) and a suitcase of cash (would only skim off the top for a cheeky Nando's); plus, they gush over the film's incredible apartment setting…or should we say “flat”? Jamie Oliver returns to the show, and we could not be happier to talk with him about so many things. For those who didn't grow up watching food TV, here's the deal. Jamie pioneered a form of food television that brought cameras into the home in a way not previously seen. When The Naked Chef debuted on BBC Two in the UK and the Food Network in the United States in 1999, home cooking on TV was a stand-and-stir affair. Here, a young and floppy Oliver was cooking real food from a cool East London flat, talking viewers through the relative simplicity of making dinner. Oliver has gone on to write numerous cookbooks (selling 50 million in the UK alone) and create food TV that expanded beyond cooking, producing documentaries about the sugar industry and school lunches that transitioned his work from dude food evangelist to heartier activism. His latest book, One: Simple One-Pan Wonders, is out now.Oliver was a joy to have on the program, and we talked about spice blends, Cool Britannia, the sugar tax, Jamie's future in UK politics, and what sparks creativity for a guy who is always working on three projects at once. This was such a great talk, and we hope you enjoy it.Also on the show, Aliza and Matt catch up to talk about what's underrated and overrated (protein bars, savory granola), before diving into a discussion about starlight mints, the Werther's children, and the Holiday Inn Holidome.More from Jamie Oliver:Jamie Oliver's Sneaker Game Needs No Seasoning [High Snobbery]Jamie Oliver Dishes Up Easy & Affordable One-Pot Recipes [The View]Miso Roasted Chicken [GMA]Superiority Burger [IG]

Kate Moss came to fame in the 1990s, and her distinctive look went on to embody the era of Cool Britannia. She has appeared on the cover of hundreds of magazines and starred in campaigns for many of the top fashion houses. She has made cameos on film and television and inspired artists including Lucian Freud, Tracey Emin and Marc Quinn. Kate was born in Croydon in 1974. When she was 14, she was spotted at JFK airport by Sarah Doukas who signed her to her modelling agency. Two years later Kate was on the cover of the style magazine the Face – one of a series of photographs shot on Camber Sands by Corinne Day. The images were raw and natural and Kate's slight, delicate build, in stark contrast to the curvaceous supermodel silhouette that had defined the decade, heralded a new era in modelling. Kate moved on to high profile campaigns for the designers Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs. In 1993 she appeared on the cover of British Vogue for the first time. Later her waif-like figure attracted criticism from some commentators who thought some of her photographs glamorised thinness. In 2013 Kate received a Special Recognition award at the British Fashion Awards, acknowledging her 25-year contribution to fashion. Kate set up her own talent agency in 2016 and one of the agency's first signings was her daughter Lila.
