The Comparison Trap is when we get stuck comparing our lives to other people and feeling worse as a result. It's a common problem in language learning, and this is something that I often experience too since I was inspired to make this episode after a moment of comparison made me feel worse. We often compare ourselves to others in many ways, such as income, appearance, skills, and on social media. In this episode, I cover all of these topics while sharing some useful comparative grammar structures to improve your spoken English.Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast297Blue Grit Podcast: The Voice of Texas Law EnforcementHost: Clint McNear and Tyler Owen discussing topics, issues, and stories within the...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySign Up for Free Lessons - https://www.levelupenglish.school/#freelessonsJoin Level Up English - https://courses.levelupenglish.schoolBy becoming a member, you can access all podcast transcripts, listen to the private podcast and join live lessons and courses on the website.

Send us a text Home is supposed to be the safest place, a sanctuary where the chaos of the outside world is kept at bay. Yet, the chilling reality is that this is often an illusion. In the blink of an eye, the ordinary can transform into a nightmare. On the night of December 30th, 2000, a quiet, simple middle-class family experienced this fear and horror firsthand. Their once safe haven became a trap of terror when a deranged killer rampaged through their home. What happened to them would shake Japan to its core and lead to changes in its laws. This case would spark an international manhunt for the killer, a search that continues to this day. Curiosity is an important thing to practice to be better English language learners and enjoy your life more. When we start learning a language, we're naturally very open and curious to learning new things. It can be an amazing feeling when you're really into something and you're looking up every little detail. However, along the way, we naturally get more complacent and we begin to take things for granted. This curiosity fades into daily habits and routines. Curiosity makes language learning so much more enjoyable more also helps you progress faster. This week, I'll explore the peculiar true story that inspired William Peter Blatty to write the book and screenplay for the 1973 hit film "The Exorcist." This is the story of a boy around 14 years old who experienced something truly bizarre back in 1949. And unlike Regan in the exorcist, whose story is completely fabricated, this one is well documented, with lots of credible witnesses. And while we've known his story for quite some time, we only just learned his identity a few years ago. And he's not at all what you'd expect. Let's fix that. Support the show! Street Interviews with Young Adults and Parents from Around the World! As the old saying goes, “the best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray.” That is exactly what happened.Denise's plan to visit Ellen in Prague took a turn when Ellen, then in Boston, tested positive for COVID just a few days before her planned trip to Prague for Denise's arrival. She thought she might join a few days later if she tested negative, but her mother, who lives in Wisconsin, took a fall and Ellen went to take care of her. Denise and her husband, Kevin, spent 10 days in Prague in Ellen's apartment... sadly, without Ellen. The episode we had planned, about Ellen's book, had to be cancelled! So, today we are sharing street interviews with parents and adult children that Denise conducted in Prague. We interviewed people from Germany, New Zealand, Great Britain, the US and more. We also include some interviews from New York City's Central Park. We learned pretty quickly that some of the struggles parents have with their adult children are global issues. You will have to listen to learn more - it's a fun episode!Thank you to Connie Gorant Fisher, who took what we gave her and made the episode quite special and unique.Support us P L E A S E! The New York Times says this book is a close retelling of David Copperfield and there aren't a lot of major plot differences between the two books. This article states that you can read Demon Copperhead without reading David Copperfield. Kelly on Goodreads says the book is stereotypical, painting people from Appalachia poorly. Join us for Part 2 of assassinator John Wilkes Booth in today's episode. President Abraham Lincoln had been on John Wilkes Booth's mind for months before he shot and murdered him at close range in Ford's Theater on April 14, 1865. Around the time of Abraham Lincoln's re-election in November 1864, Booth began scheming against the President, whom he loathed for his anti-slavery stance and for waging war against the South. At first, the well-known actor hoped to kidnap Lincoln, bring him to Richmond and exchange him for Confederate prisoners of war. However, the Fall of Richmond on April 3, 1865 and the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee a few days later prompted him and his co-conspirators to consider even more drastic action….and Lincoln wasn't their only target. Find out the brutal consequences for Booth, his co-conspirators and his famous family. This episode digs deep. Today we interview Daniel Maté, who, with his father Dr. Gabor Maté has been holding highly engaging and popular workshops called “Hello Again - A Fresh Start for Parents and Their Adult Children." He points out that they do not call their workshops "a happy ending," instead it is a "fresh start." Everyone's fresh start will look different and he talks about how to get there. Dr. Maté, Daniel's father is a renowned speaker and author who, as his website says: "weaves together scientific research, case histories, and his own insights and experience to present a broad perspective that enlightens and empowers people to promote their own healing and that of those around them."And that is what we hear from Daniel today. How they work with parents and adult children and sort carefully this "intense, speedy relationship." "Once you are an adult," he says, your relationship with your parents is a choice...that comes with risks, rewards and pitfalls." This is not an episode with "answers," this is an episode to truly get you to think and examine so many aspects of yourself, your child-rearing and your adult children. This episode will help you realize what is possible.Read more about Daniel and his father's book, the New York Times best selling book “The Myth of Normal.” Link to Daniel's Mental Chiropractic Service and as an award-winning composer, lyricist, and playwright for musical theatre don't miss his podcast -- Let's Get Lyrical.Blue Grit Podcast: The Voice of Texas Law EnforcementHost: Clint McNear and Tyler Owen discussing topics, issues, and stories within the...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify The information provided by Bite Your Tongue The Podcast (“we,” “us,” or “our”) or biteyourtonguepodcast.com (the “Site” and our mobile application is for general informational purposes only. Lisa discusses the book American Dirt by American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. This book delves into a mother and son's journey to escape the cartel and flee to the U.S. as an illegal immigrant. This book has caused many people to look at immigration very differently but it's also been controversial because Cummins is a white writer and isn't Hispanic. Myriam Gurba writes an amazing take-down of the book criticizing the characters saying they are stereotypes that she says are highlighted in the book. Writer Roxanne Gay says in this piece in Medium that the publisher's dinner in celebration of the book had centerpieces with small concrete walls wrapped with barbed wire was “callous display” and “aestheticizing trauma.” This piece calls American Dirt trauma porn and The Guardian delves into the responses from Latinix writers. In this piece, The Long Shadow of American Dirt, a New York Times writer reflects on The American Dirt “debacle” three years later. The piece talks about self-censorship. Books Discussed:Salito: A Memoir by Javier Zamora Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli Children of the Land: A Memoir by Marcelo Hernandez Castillo Where We Come From by Oscar Casares Everyone Knows You Go Home by Natalia Sylvester Other publications have come up with lists of books to read as well. She acquired 28 children, about half of them stolen from psychiatric hospitals and raised them in such a spine tingling way. Was justice served? Where are these children today? Sometimes investigators get it really wrong. In 1986, after Michael Morton left his home in the suburbs of Austin, Texas for a regular day at work, his wife, Christine, was brutally murdered while their three-year-old son, Eric, watched. Upon returning home from work, he discovered that he was the prime suspect in her murder, due to a note he had left her that morning…six weeks later he was arrested. In 1987, he was sentenced to life in prison. Ken Anderson, the District Attorney, withheld key evidence which was later discovered by the Innocence Project. This evidence ultimately freed Michael Morton in October 2011, after he spent nearly 25 years in prison as an innocent man. DNA exonerated him and pointed to Christine's real killer!
