Working with partners in government, business, and the community, MAPS Canada is committed to advancing psychedelic medicine by supporting scientific, multidisciplinary research; advocating for drug policy reform; offering public education; and supporting equitable access to legal and regulated psychedelic medicine in Canada. The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) was formed in the US in 1986, in response to the US Drug Enforcement Agency's classification of MDMA as Schedule 1 substance, and has been developing medical, legal, and cultural contexts for people to benefit from the careful uses of psychedelics since then. MAPS Canada was founded as a sister organization to MAPS in 2011, and is a registered Canadian non-profit organization. Based in Vancouver and with hundreds of volunteers from across Canada, MAPS Canada is moving forward to become the leading Canadian source of information, resources and advocacy regarding psychedelic medicine and related clinical research, education, and public policy. Dr. T and Truth Fairy welcome guest Robert Laurie to the show to talk about radical approaches to medical health and the ongoing fight for the recognition and legalization of cannabis and psychedelic medicines. Robert is a pioneer in psychedelic law and policy, the founder of Ad Lucem Law Corporation, and has been instrumental in advancing medical access to cannabis and psilocybin internationally. Robert shares his insights on the future of psychedelic therapy with Dr. T. and Truth Fairy.Robert discusses how he has represented many cases in the psychedelic space but the focus of his work has primarily shifted to looking at constitutional arguments. He points out such areas as opening dispensaries, operating psychedelic healing centers, and making psychedelics available on reserves through retail dispensaries. He explains that he collaborates with and represents academics, scientists, MDs, researchers and elders in his quest to shape policy in favour of cannabis and psilocybin.  Truth Fairy, Dr. T, and Robert examine the history of cannabis prohibition, how cannabis use compares to tobacco and alcohol use in terms of lethality rates, the rigidity of government views on psychedelics, and how policy aims to combat the ingrained structures that stand against the proliferation of psychedelic medicines. Robert's opinions and outlook are shaped by personal experience, years of study, and legal expertise in the realm of psychedelic use. He sheds light on what he believes is the innate right of humankind to access plant-based medicines and why governments tend to oppose that right.  “I mean, I think it's fair to say that there's probably been tons of scientific research by both military and medical and pharmaceutical. But what it boils down to is, you know, just take smoking cessation and psychedelics, for example. I mean, psychedelics, you know, promise major disruption to these well-established and entrenched hallowed halls, including tobacco, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, and the government isn't, I think, sure what to do with all of this.” - Robert Laurie__ About Robert Laurie:Robert graduated from the faculty of Political Science and International Relations at the University of British Columbia and earned his law degree from the University of Oxford. He has been practicing law since 2006, and is recognized as an accomplished lawyer, international consultant, and public speaker.Part of Robert's practice is committed to improving medical patient access and facilitate drug laws for cannabis, psychedelics, and sacred plant medicines. Robert advised Dr. Bruce Tobin and the TheraPsil Alliance litigation team (first Section 56 CDSA medical exemption for psilocybin in Canada). He was one of the Decriminalize Nature Canada Petition drafters, part of a national campaign to decriminalize restricted plant medicines and fungi in Canada. His goal is to help provide more options for doctors and treatments for anxiety, depression, addiction, and PTSD.Robert is a Special Advisor to Gateway Proven Strategies (GPS Global), [JB1] a Denver-based cannabis management consultancy firm operating globally, and serves as a board advisor to MAPS Canada, the Last Prisoner Project, and the Psychedelic Association of Canada. Erika joins us for an interview with Jaipreet Mattu to discuss her 20 years of research on Canada's past with psychedelic psychiatry, the growing awareness of the role women played in the development of psychedelic therapy, Indigenous use of psychedelic plants and protecting their cultural rights, and lastly, the global future of psychedelic plant medicine. Erika's research focuses mainly on the history of medicine, health and social justice, and of course, the history of psychedelics in psychiatry. She's taught classes on the history of medicine and psychiatry, social justice and gender equality in medicine, and eugenics. She's also written on women's health in other aspects of Canadian health care. More recently, Erika's research focuses on women in the history of psychedelic psychiatry. She highlights the importance of thinking about the intersections of gender in psychedelics and incorporating new voices and discussions about gender considerations in the development of psychedelic therapy. This episode is the first in our two-part series on Canada's captivating history with psychedelics. Join us as we take a trip down memory lane... Did you know Canada was once the leading country in psychedelic research? Beginning in the late-1940s, Canada's first so-called socialist provincial government in Saskatchewan set out to improve the state of mental health care with research at the Weyburn Mental Hospital. Over the course of the 1950s, groundbreaking research with LSD and mescaline was conducted at Weyburn and LSD made its way to British Columbia which became home to the most prominent mental healthcare facility in the world during the 1960s. In this episode, we deliver a behind-the-scenes look at the introduction of LSD and peyote into Canada and the story behind the fascinating scientists and researchers that pioneered psychedelic research in the realm of psychiatry, while also advocating Indigenous Peoples and their cultural rights to peyote. This episode was produced and edited by Brendon Campbell. It was researched and written by Jaipreet Mattu, Sean Hallam, Rebecca Troock, Sidath Rankaduwa, Monica Lau, Ross Crockford, and Bob Sybydlo. Readings by Sean Hallam, Jaipreet Mattu, and Brendon Campbell. Original music and audio engineering by Andrew Illmann. We often think of psychedelics to be purely recreational, but studies are showing that they may have medical value. Hosts, Rhys Paterson and Francesco Colosimo sat down with Master of Science student, Sid Rankaduwa, to discuss his research involving looking for the possibility of 'higher states of consciousness' in psilocybin users. More specifically, he is testing the effects of psilocybin on certain aspects of visual processing, and seeing how this might inform current theories of consciousness. Today a growing number of alternative health professionals and former addicts offer ibogaine treatment at centers in Mexico, Central and South America, and at underground locations in Europe and the United States. Even though iboga is classified as a Schedule 1 substance in the United States, which makes possession against the law. At the same time, as many as 4 million Americans now have an opiate addiction problem. In 2017, some 50,000 people died from overdoses. More people need to know about ibogaine. That's the mission behind Lakshmi Narayan's campaign, Iboga Saves, which includes a movie and a public education effort to help addicts find care. Lakshmi invited some of the experts she's working with to join us for a conversation about what ibogaine treatment is like, how it works, and where it's heading. With Ken today are Deanne Adamson, the founder and president of Being True to You, which is pioneering a transformational recovery model using ibogaine, Anslyn Ryan, who is a Being True to You certified recovery coach, Trevor Millar, who founded the ibogaine provider Liberty Root in Vancouver and is Chairman of the Board of MAPS Canada, and Eric Theirmann, the film director who is making the Iboga Saves documentary.Iboga Saves: https://awake.netBeing True to You: https://beingtruetoyou.comLiberty Root: http://libertyroot.netFollow us on Instagram @TheEvolverPodcast: https://www.instagram.com/theevolverpodcastThe Evolver is sponsored by The Alchemist's Kitchen, a botanical dispensary dedicated to the power of plants, where you can ask an herbalist to recommend the herbal remedy that's most right for you. Mark has been educating the Canadian public about all aspects of drugs for decades. He's now the chair of MAPS Canada, which is the Multi-Disciplinary Association of Psychedelic Substances. With them he is working to organize studies with MDMA and other psychedelic substances in therapeutic settings, mainly with people suffering from trauma.  We talk about this research, but also much more. From how to talk to youth about drugs, to the possible future of drug use after prohibition. Mark believes we should train and educate people in the safe use of whichever substance they are interested in before granting the right to use it. Also that we can regulate in ways that avoid the marketing and commercialization of these powerful drugs, as is the current case with cigarette's and alcohol.  Find Mark at MAPS Canada at MAPS at INSTAGRAM:  TWITTER: www.
