In today's episode, I share a bit of the more personal parts of my life. Last week I celebrated three years of sobriety, and while it may not be obvious how this ties into language learning, I can say that the link between these two things is very strong for me. I can say for sure that my early experiences learning Italian while living in Italy had a strong impact on my self-doubt, which had a strong impact on how much and how often I drank in order to escape the stress and pressure I put on myself, the raw feelings of vulnerability and failure, and so much negative self-talk. And I can say for sure that how much and how often I drank had a strong negative impact on my language learning because, while I was trying to escape my negative thoughts, I also escaped the positive ones, and I masked the joy of progress I was making and the pride of what I was accomplishing in my language. So this soberversary was a perfect time for me to reflect on the things that contributed to my downward spiral, with both alcohol and languages, and what I've done to start creating a life from which I don't want to escape. It's not a far stretch for me to see similarities between my journey to and through sobriety and my language learning journey, and some of the tools I used to get and stay sober have also worked for helping me improve my mentality about languages. Thank you for listening to this vulnerable yet uplifting episode. I hope you get something out of it and are more inspired to create a joyful life for yourself with languages and beyond. There's a myth that we need alcohol to relax and have fun. Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol-free life! This week my guest is Mandy Manners. Mandy has her own recovery story to tell. Alcohol free for more than 4 years she is now a recovery coach and author. In this Episode Mandy and I are both Brits married to Frenchmen, so were able to discuss and contrast the very different attitudes to drinking in Uk & France. Mandy's French husband was able to cut down easily when they became parents but for her it was not quite so easy.. She believes that in France you are either seen as an "alcoholic" or someone who can have just one glass. When she first moved to France she had two young children and felt isolated which meant that her drinking got worse. Mandy had a touch of sober curiosity when she met her sister in law who didn't drink yet she seemed to be happy! After stopping and starting for years she reached out to Soberistas for help and found the community a great help We both agreed that "finding your people" was an essential first stop - find a community that suits you She had been a binge drinker during her teenage years and also took recreational drugs. Mandy highlighted the fact that hard drugs are demonised whereas alcohol is encouraged. Like many of us Mandy tried to moderate for years - setting (and breaking) many of her own rules about when she should drink. Due to a trauma in her teenage years Mandy had underlying issues which meant she needed to work with a therapist Mandy said that many people feel that once they've sorted the rest of their life out then they will address their drinking - however it should be the other way round - stop drinking and you will be able to sort your other issues Mandy is now 4 years sober and thriving in her alcohol free life - she has a better relationship with her husband and kids - she sleeps so much better She is now a recovery coach and has written a book called "Love Yourself Sober" - she has a podcast called "Love Sober" and her website is mandymanners.com Joining Tribe Sober is a great way to start your Sober Curious journey - find out more on tribesober.com We start our annual 66 day challenge in September - called Sober Spring here in South Africa but can be Sober Autumn as well Membership also allows you to find your people as we welcome you into our supportive community - and this month new members will get a complimentary Sober Spring Challenge Just go to tribesober.com and hit the "join our tribe" button to read more about the benefits of membership More info Subscription membership for Tribe Sober is just R85 (£4/$6) a month - you can join up HERE To access our website click HERE If you would like a free copy of our "Annual Tracker" or our e-book "66 Days to Sobriety" please email janet@tribesober.com If you would like to come to our Saturday afternoon Zoom Cafe as a guest and meet our community just email janet@tribesober.com Episode Sponsor This episode is sponsored by the Tribe Sober Membership Program. Today Alex and Lisa talk with Lucy Rocca about her journey to sobriety, Soberistas, her books and what helped her to get and stay sober. Lucy Rocca drank rather too much alcohol for 22 years before finally deciding, back in 2012, that it might be a good idea to not drink any more. Following this momentous lifestyle change, she set up the website soberistas.com for people who had an unhealthy relationship with booze and were looking for non-judgmental support and solidarity in getting and staying alcohol-free. In its first year, Soberistas attracted 20,000 members and now has 65,000 people from all over the world making up its lively community. Lucy has had 5 books published since 2012, all on the topic of quitting drinking, and continues to work as editor and director of the Soberistas website. She is also a life/sober coach, specialising in quitting drinking and rebuilding self-esteem, and offers 1-to-1 online support to people looking for extra help in ditching the drink. When she isn’t working, Lucy loves running, family time, music, her dogs, cooking and eating newfangled healthy stuff, and watching box sets. Erin talks with Kate Baily, cofounder of the LOVE SOBER community and cohost of the LOVE SOBER podcast. Kate’s story of recovery began when she stopped wondering if her drinking was “bad enough,” and joined in an online sober women’s community, Soberistas.Kate's “bad enough” question is one many women in our community struggle with as they feel stuck in the gray area of drinking - that space in between the extremes of rock bottom and every-now-and-again drinking. In that gray area, the consequences of our drinking behavior is often intimate and known only to us.Kate also shares about the trauma and self harm she experienced as a young teenager in a devout religious community and how she used Buddhist principles and practices to help her heal. As we're now well into Sober October, and with Dry January already on the horizon, this month's Real Podcast is bound to be focused on not drinking. Not that we're against alcohol, of course. Alcohol is not the problem. What fascinates us, and what we're really keen to investigate over the coming episodes, is the way in which our society tends to dive neck first into what can only be described as an unthinking drinking culture. As usual, we've been out to chat to people who we've met on the Real Kombucha journey – people who like to think a little differently and look at things through an alternative lens.On the way through this month's podcasts, we'll be hearing a lot of personal stories, some of which are quite harrowing, but they all have a common outcome: positivity. The desire to make a positive change and to help others to do the same. We'll be talking to people who came of age in the hard-drinking nineties culture, as well as younger non-drinkers currently running some of the biggest sober curious Instagram accounts. We'll also be talking to people who are hoping to make changes from inside the drinking industry. It's going to be a fascinating month. One person who has really gone to the heart of this and started opening people's eyes to the peculiarity of our accepted drinking culture is Lucy Rocca. Lucy launched the incredibly helpful Soberistas platform after shaking off the shackles of a particularly fraught relationship with alcohol and realising that, like so many people, Alcoholics Anonymous wasn't necessarily for her.As of this moment, Soberistas have close to 11,000 Facebook followers, 60,000 registered members, and a website containing 54,000 articles relating to what people are calling the Sober Curious Movement.I caught up with Lucy on a rickety phone line from Sheffield to discuss the sinister rise of Wine O'Clock, memories of Melanie Sykes and her Boddingtons Ice Cream van, and why it's perhaps not a good idea to go drinking in theme parks.Go on… have a listen.
This week Woman's Hour is all yours. We've had loads of emails and tweets about what you want us to talk about this week. Today we hear from Heidi who wants us to explore a kind of ADHD which is the Inattentive type and affects girls. Heidi is joined by Dr Céline Ryckaert who explains how and why it can be hard to diagnose in young girls and women. We've also got Marilyn on. Not only is she a regular listener but she's a psychotherapist and new mum. She wants us to discuss what she calls "mummy drinking” which she believes is a problem. We've paired her up with Lucy Rocca, author and founder of Soberistas, a social network for women struggling with alcohol addiction. What's it like to divorce when you're 70? Scary or liberating? Our listener Anne tells us all about it. And how do we bring up sons to be kind and considerate men in the future, especially towards women? How do you encourage them to believe that girls and women have the same rights and opportunities as they do? And what does it really mean to bring your boys up as "feminists"? Kelly-Anne told us that she wanted us to tackle that one.

In this episode we had the great delight to talk with Lucy Rocca - Founder of Soberistas. Lucy has written four books on sobriety, helped thousands of people (including us) on their journey into living a happy, healthy alcohol free life. Lucy gave up drinking seven years ago and felt there was a huge lack of support for people like her, the idea behind Soberistas was to create "a Mumsnet for worried binge drinkers" Not using prescriptive language of alcoholism/alcoholic/addiction but for people to be able to share their concerns, their problems and help each other giving up alcohol. The formula has proved hugely successful and since launching the site in 2012 there are now 52,000 registered members worldwide. In Lucy's words "You've got to create a life you love." that being alcohol free isn't giving up anything, but the best decision you could ever make for yourself. Thanks so much to Lucy for her time, energy and continued sober activism. She really was one of the trailblazer's of the modern Sober Revolution movement and continues to be a vital advocate for sober living. And thanks personally from us, when we think of how life would be for us without Soberistas it doesn't bare thinking about. Much Love K & M. Death by alcohol is a real thing. And a brush with this fact of life completely turned things around for our featured guest in this episode. She asserts, “The worst thing that ever happened to me was drinking alcohol.” In this 7th installment of our podcast, One Year No Beer Co-Founder Ruari Fairbairns talks to Lucy Rocca. Lucy is the founder of the phenomenon that is the Soberistas, a movement which has built an incredibly supportive, non-judgemental community helping many people conquer long-term alcohol dependencies. She has written five best-selling books and regularly inspires people to take up alcohol free living. The ‘magic potion’ Listen as Lucy recounts how she started drinking at the young age of 13. She had thought, accordingly, that alcohol was like a magic potion that made her feel attractive, made her ‘fit in’, and made things seem so much more fun. She was so seduced she embraced a hedonistic lifestyle basking in alcohol throughout her twenties. She confesses, “I wasn’t ever drinking for the taste, or to get a little bit tipsy. I was drinking to get drunk.” Lucy was divorced and a single parent in her late twenties. Alcohol became a ‘self-medication’ for her. And she relates, in this episode, how she carried on with the routine of frequenting bars, muddling through the week and living for the weekend, until she was 35. Wake up call It was that fateful night in April 2011 when Lucy’s life was changed forever. She remembers how she was drinking alone, being very depressed, and downing 3 bottles of wine and a litter of strong cider. She eventually collapsed on a pavement outside of her house, and woke up in a hospital. She thought she could’ve died, and she never drank alcohol again after that. Soberistas Drawing from her own experiences as a heavy drinker (for twenty years) who did not find any support in quitting drinking, Lucy created Soberistas. She discusses in this podcast how she saw the need for an ‘online space where people could be completely anonymous and honest about their drinking.’ The movement started with a blog. And it was such a sensation it initially attracted at least 20,000 people to sign up. It has been featured in Australian Vogue, Canadian Elle, Red Magazine, and several popular TV programs. Beautiful redemption Lucy muses, in retrospect, how she became fitter, healthier, more productive and creative, a better mom, a nicer friend, and how she now has more money, being alcohol free: “I feel the best I ever felt (and I’m nearly 41) and I look the best I ever looked . . . The single act of stopping drinking has completely changed my life.” LINKS & RESOURCES OYNB Website: https://www.oneyearnobeer.com/ OYNB Faceboook Page: https://www.facebook.com/Oneyearnobeer/ OYNB Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/199505820380513/ OYNB Twitter: https://twitter.com/oynbuk/ OYNB Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oneyearnobeer/ LUCY ROCCA’S LINKS Lucy Rocca’s Books Soberistas Website: http://soberistas.com/ Soberistas Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/Soberistas/ SoberistasTwitter: https://twitter.com/soberistas/ Soberistas Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/soberistas/ Soberistas Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/soberistas/ Soberistas Futures Twitter: https://twitter.com/SoberFuturesCIO/
