This week we're finding out how to be a hoverfly hero. These masters of mimicry are vitally important pollinators, decomposers, and aphid predators, but their populations are in steep decline in the UK. RHS entomologist Josie Stuart will be telling us more about these garden friends, and how we as gardeners can help. Keeping our gardens blooming for as long as possible is a great help for all our pollinators and Cosmos shows off its delicate flowers all the way from late summer through to the first frosts of autumn. We'll speak to National Collection holder Jonathon Sheppard for his recommendations of the best cultivars to try this year. And from one remarkable collection to another – Sarah Cook has dedicated years to researching and reviving the lost irises of Cedric Morris. These striking blooms, once thought to survive only in his famous paintings, have been brought back to life thanks to her tireless work in the RHS archives and in Cedric's garden at Benton End. Creativity Coach Sarah Cook joined me in a conversation peeling  back the layers of her life post-autism diagnosis, exploring the transformative power of understanding and embracing neurodiversity. Because this is brand new information to her, I cherished the opportunity to capture the raw joy of this moment in her life. Through the lens of her experience, we navigate the often invisible terrain of unseen disabilities, unmasking the complexities of autism—particularly among women and people of color. This journey isn't just about self-acceptance; it's a broader challenge to societal norms and the way we perceive and support those around us.Sarah and I unravel the tight weave of where trauma and misinterpreted neurodivergence converge. The conversation becomes a sanctuary for those feeling misunderstood within the rigid structures of mental health diagnosis, as we examine the spectrum of human traits with curiosity and compassion. Our dialogue offers a perspective shift, proposing that the essence of therapy and coaching is not to reshape but to recognize and validate the diverse tapestry of the human experience. As we close this profound exchange, the focus turns to the delicate dance of unmasking in pursuit of authenticity. Sarah's insights guide us through the process, revealing the patience required to shed layers of conditioning and societal expectations. This episode isn't simply a story shared; it's an invitation to witness the journey towards true self-discovery and a celebration of the neurological diversity that enriches our lives. Grass weeds are a problem on almost all farms in Ireland and the scale of the increase and the measures necessary to control them is less well known.  Black grass is in every county in the country and while it can be relatively easy to keep it out, it takes vigilance. To get a better insight into the topic, this week's Tillage Edge podcast features Dr. Sarah Cook from ADAS in the UK, who spoke at the ECT Grass Weed Conference in November about black grass and how to eliminate it from farms. You can also view the presentation at:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOtyctCulNg&ab_channel=TeagascCrops Teagasc SurveyTeagasc have launched a survey to help identify the areas planted this autumn.  The wet conditions have persisted from mid-September to late-November hindering planting in all areas.  This loss of winter crop area this autumn looks to be compounded by a lack of seed for spring cereals, which may lead to unsown land on many farms in 2024.  Teagasc are asking for as many tillage farmers as possible to participate in order to get the best picture of the national areas as possible. How much planting have you completed this Autumn? Will you plant more winter cereal in Jan/Feb? Email automation can save you time and increase your revenue…how cool is that! There are so many different ways you can use automations at all stages of the donor journey. Here are five automations you can implement to help you grow your list, nurture your audience and keep them coming back for more. What you'll learn: → what is an automation? → creating a welcome sequence. → what to send after someone purchases from you. → lead magnets that help you grow your list. → building energy buzz with pre/post event emails. → creating a process for follow up after one on one conversations Want to skip ahead? Here are key takeaways: [3:17] Email automations are emails that go in the background. They help you develop a deeper connection with your audience and are specific for the actions that your audience is taking. To set this up you'll need an email service provide. Some of my favorites are in the resources below. [6:06] Automation #1 – Welcome Sequence. This is the emails people get right after they have donated. It allows them to dive deeper into your organization and feel a part of your community. [8:13] Automation #2 – After a Purchase. This is in relation to a purchase like tickets or pet adoption etc. This isn't related to a donation. Think about how you can add value to them for the product they've purchased and build more trust and repeat purchases. [9:53] Automation #3 – A Lead Magnet. A lead magnet gives someone a resource or solution to a pain point in exchange for their email address. This can be a checklist, pdf, audio clip, etc. The important thing is that it gets you in front of your ideal audience. [11:53] Automation #4 – Pre/Post Event Emails. These are emails that your event attendees get prior to the event. This helps to create buzz and and energy for the event as well as provide important information they need to have fun! Then, after the event, having a serious of emails that shares results and how they can dive deeper with you moving forward. [15:41] Automation #5 – Follow up from one on one conversations. This might be the trickiest but this allows you to follow up with people you've had one on on conversations with that fit in a smiliar bucket. What you send them will vary based off the type of conversation. It can help you stay top of mind while still adding value. Olivia Enos of the Heritage Foundation speaks with Mark Melton about how the Chinese government has been snuffing out liberty in Hong Kong. She discusses the recent arrests of Cardinal Zen and pro-democracy advocates and explains what they mean for religious liberty in the city-state. She also analyzes the Vatican's deal with the Chinese Communist Party and warns the Catholic Church against improving relations with the Beijing regime. Enos wrote an article for Providence making the case that the United States government should give Hong Kong refugees “Priority-2 Status,” so she explains what this means, why it is necessary, and how the Biden administration could make this change immediately. After traveling to Europe, Enos noticed how European governments were not taking the China threat seriously as both Republicans and Democrats in America do. So she discussed the dangers of Europe being too lax on the CCP and does not take the US warnings seriously. Even though there is bipartisan consensus that China is a threat to US foreign policy interests, she explains how the Biden administration's approach to Beijing has been mixed. Uighurs still face unprecedented persecution in China, and last fall Congress passed the Uighur Forced Labor Prevention Act—which Christine McDaniel and Weifeng Zhong discussed on the Foreign Policy ProvCast in February. As part of the process to implement that Act, Congress has been listening to public comments, including from Enos. She explains where this Act stands today and other developments with the Uighur genocide. Today, I'm talking with Business Strategist and life enthusiast Sarah Cook. Sarah was one of my coaches when I was in Trudi Lebron's Amplified Impact Mastermind this year. During our time together, I came to respect Sarah's perspective on equity, the coaching industry, and how we can do better. I reached out to her because lately, I've been wrestling with my training as a coach. In hindsight, one of the programs focused a lot on building a business, but not so much on being a better coach. There I learned practices that aren't really aligned with my values. After trying hard to make them work for me, I got burned out. Now I'm creating a workflow and coaching style that feels right for me. The coaching industry has a dark side and one I don't want to perpetuate. One that tends to prioritize profit for coaches over clients' experiences. One that views mindset as the only barrier to growth, and overlooks the lived experiences of people who hold identities different than the dominant culture. As with most growth opportunities, I'm having to look at my part in all this. While I may never be free of my insecurities and biases, I am committed to noticing them and making changes for myself and my clients. We'd love to know what you have to add to this conversation. Have you ever felt like your profession or work culture wasn't aligned with your values? How did that affect you? What did you do? About Sarah: Sarah Cook is a business strategist who loves helping entrepreneurs build their businesses in unique and effective ways by implementing strategies that make sense for their values, strengths, impact, and personal goals. Sarah resides in the beautiful state of Maine. She is an avid hiker, loves art, and daily dance parties. Resources: Business for Social Change: Trudi LeBron https://trudilebron.com/
