I'm back with Chapter 2 of the Bhagavad Gita! This is so dense I had to split it into two parts. Today we'll discuss verses 1-38. This chapter serves as a foundation for understanding the eternal nature of the soul (Atman) and the importance of non-attachment in the face of life's challenges. Let's look at Arjuna's emotional turmoil and Krishna's tough love approach, emphasizing the need for inner stability and the acceptance of life's transient nature. The emphasis on the immortality of the soul, the significance of understanding one's Dharma, and the win-win perspective in life. This chapter literally has all of Krishna's essential teachings. Making it a gold mine. Get ready to learn from the original life coach (Krishna):

Make sure to go back a couple of episodes and listen to my overview of the Bhagavad Gita, and get excited because chapter one is only the beginning of this amazing series! Let's explore:

Eswaran, founder of the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation and meditation instructor at the University of California, Berkeley, emphasizes the power of slowing down the mind to reduce stress and tension. By practicing meditation and slowing our pace of life, we can cultivate resilience and make choices with clarity. Eswaran's book, "Words to Live By," provides daily guidance and inspiration, outlining his eight-point program that includes practices such as meditation, mantra repetition, and focused attention. The idea of having a mantra resonates deeply with me personally. I have found that listening to podcasts while driving and focusing on a chosen mantra helps me stay present and attentive. Eswaran's second point in his program is the repetition of a mantra, or what he refers to as a mantram. These powerful spiritual formulas can transform consciousness when silently repeated in the mind. Every religious tradition has its own mantras, such as the name of Jesus, Hail Mary, Blessed art thou, Allah, and Om Mani Padme Hum. It is important to choose a mantra that deeply appeals to us and to stick with it, as changing mantras may hinder the deep benefits they can provide. Repeating our chosen mantra silently throughout the day, during activities like walking, waiting, or doing chores, can help us stay relaxed and alert. The calming effect of the mantra can also alleviate negative emotions such as anger, fear, and worry. From my personal experience, I have been using the same mantra since the mid-90s and have found it to have a profound impact on my life. It pops up unexpectedly and grounds me in moments when I need it most. I highly recommend exploring Eknath Eswaran's teachings and reading his other books, including "The Unstruck Bell." Today's meditation comes from The Book Of Romans in The New Testament and from the writings of Eknath Easwaran, with music by Stephen Keech.Passage: To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. —Romans 8:6Perspective: Unless we train it, the very nature of the mind is to keep on hopping from one thing to another, almost at random. The mind can be very usefully employed, but it has to be trained for its job. Too much of the time the mind is engaged in negative thinking, either about others or about ourselves – a destructive occupation. Training the mind means establishing and maintaining sound shop standards: good, creative, consistently kind thinking, and no around-the-clock activity, either. When the mind has nothing productive to do, we need to learn how to close up shop and let it rest. —Eknath EaswaranMusic: “For They Will Inherit The Earth” by Stephen KeechNarrator: Ryan Phipps

Today's meditation comes from The Book Of Second Corinthians in The New Testament and from the writings of Eknath Easwaran, with music by Moments.Passage: Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. —2 Corinthians 5:6-8Perspective: As long as we think we are the body, we will fight to hold onto the body when death comes to wrench it away. The tragedy, of course, is that death is going to take it anyway. So the great teachers in all religions tell us, “Give up your selfish attachments now and be free.” Then, when death does come, we can give him what is his without a shadow of regret, and keep for ourselves what is ours, which is love of the Lord. There is great artistry in this. Death comes and growls something about how our time has come, and we just say, “Don't growl; I'm ready to come on my own.” Then we stand up gracefully, take off the jacket that is the body, hand it over carefully, and go home. —Eknath EaswaranMusic: “The Light Within” by MomentsNarrator: Ryan Phipps

Today's meditation comes from The Book Of Acts in The New Testament and from the writings of Eknath Easwaran, with music by Outside The Sky.Passage: “Paul and Barnabas had such a sharp disagreement that they decided to part ways. Barnabas went with Mark and sailed for Cyprus. Paul and Silas also left. They were commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord.” —Acts 15:39-41Perspective: “We should be able to make all sorts of graceful concessions on things that do not matter in life and yet stand unshakable on essentials. To do this, we have to be detached from our opinions. I'm not recommending that we be wishy-washy, or lack in our strength convictions, but that we cultivate the forbearance not to force our opinions on others.” —Eknath EaswaranMusic: “Inside The Hidden Forest” by Outside The SkyNarrator: Ryan Phipps

Wisdom From Another Indian Sage and His Grandmother In our last +1, we talked about Yogananda and his guru's wisdom on what to do with ghosts/aka how to live fearlessly. As you may recall, the trick is to APPROACH our challenges rather than try to avoid them. The story is so good, we'll quickly review it. Yogananda's guru tells him: “My mother once tried to frighten me with an appalling story of a ghost in a dark chamber. I went there immediately, and expressed my disappointment at having missed the ghost. Mother never told me another horror tale.” Hah. Genius. The moral of the story? “Look fear in the face and it will cease to trouble you.” As I read that moral from an Indian yogi, I thought of another one of my favorite Indian sages, Eknath Easwaran. In his great book, Your Life Is Your Message, he tells us about a lesson he learned from his Indian guru—who happened to be his grandmother. The short story? Young Eknath was complaining about how hard it was to meditate and to change his habits. He tells us: “I complained about it to my spiritual teacher, my grandmother. She was a very plainspoken teacher, with none of the euphemisms of the intellectual, so she simply led me to a nearby amla tree. The amla is a beautiful tree, a little like the mimosa, with a small fruit. She picked a fruit and said, ‘Here, take a bite.' I started chewing. It was pretty awful. I said, ‘I've got to spit it out, Granny. It's sour, bitter, unpleasant.' She just said, ‘Bear with me. Keep chewing for a while.' So I went on chewing, and to my surprise the amla fruit began to get sweeter and sweeter. Similarly, meditation and the allied disciplines require sustained enthusiasm every day—even when it seems icky. Especially when it seems icky! If you keep at it, you will find those same disciplines becoming sweeter and sweeter. When meditation time comes around you will find yourself hungering for the inner peace and calm it brings. The time will even come when you want a double helping.” Approaching our fears? Rewiring our brains as we create new, virtuous habits that help us flourish while eliminating the old, vicious ones that don't? Of course… The process isn't always pleasant. It's often painful. It tastes “icky.” Until… We have the Wisdom to see that approaching our fears and embracing the inevitable challenges of the journey and doing the hard work to win the ultimate game that brings us the sweet reward of tapping into our infinite potential. Let's do that. TODAY.

And… How I Pick the Books I Read I'm often asked how I read a book AND how I pick the books I read. In fact, I was asked this question in one of our recent Heroic Coach Soul Force Forge sessions in which I have 1-on-1 coaching sessions with our Coaches in a group environment. (These sessions are among the highlights of my month!) Today I'd like to chat about that for a moment or three. So… In a recent Zoom, I had an opportunity to connect with Franco—an incredibly inspiring 19-year-old Argentinian Heroic optimizer who is going through our Coach certification program. Franco told me that he was getting an ARETÉ tattoo for his 20th birthday (!!) and then asked me how I read a book. I kinda went off. Here's the video clip of our time together. And, here's the short story… The most important part of how to read a book, from my perspective, is to make sure you're reading THE RIGHT BOOK. If you're reading a book because you think you “have to” or because everyone else is reading it but… You're not THAT into it, then… Well… Good luck with that. It's going to be a bit of a slog and you may find your self x pages into another book but never finishing it. Of course, sometimes we need to read a book for school or for our jobs or whatever—in which case, we'd be wise to remove all ambivalence and GO ALL IN and act like that book you need to read is the most exciting book you could ever possibly read. (Seriously.) Assuming we're talking about a situation in which our reading list is not assigned to us, the first thing I do is follow Joseph Campbell's wisdom. In The Power of Myth, he tells us: “Sit in a room and read—and read and read. And read the right books by the right people. Your mind is brought onto that level, and you have a nice, mild, slow-burning rapture all the time. This realization of life can be a constant realization in your living. When you find an author who really grabs you, read everything he has done. Don't say, ‘Oh, I want to know what So-and-so did'—and don't bother at all with the best-seller list. Just read what this one author has to give you. And then you can go read what he had read. And the world opens up in a way that is consistent with a certain point of view. But when you go from one author to another, you may be able to tell us the date when each wrote such and such a poem—but he hasn't said anything to you.” Yep. That's the way to do it. And, that's what I've done for the better part of the last 15-20 years now. In my 20s and early 30s, I started with Dan Millman. And Paulo Coelho. And Wayne Dyer. I've read nearly everything those guys have written. (Check out the Notes by clicking on the link for each author.) More recently, I've read almost everything written by Steven Pressfield, Ryan Holiday, and Cal Newport. Then there's my old coach Steve Chandler and my beloved Yoda Phil Stutz. Then there's Joseph Campbell himself. And one of my all-time favorite teachers, Eknath Easwaran—who I consider to be, in many ways, the Indian version of Campbell. In fact, I've created the MOST Notes on Easwaran and his great books. Nine of them so far. His translations of the Gita and Dhammapada in particular are ! Most recently, I followed this thread with Michael Singer. Not too long ago, I read his latest book called Living Untethered. It's INCREDIBLY good. We previously featured The Untethered Soul, which I really liked, but after reading his latest book, Singer is now one of my new favorite teachers. So… After finishing that book, I immediately got three other books he's written—including a couple he wrote nearly 50 years ago. In one of THOSE books he thanked Yogananda for being the deepest influence of his life. So what did I do? I immediately got HIS classic An Autobiography of a Yogi. Then I learned that Steve Jobs gave An Autobiography of a Yogi to everyone who attended his memorial service as THE final gift on their way out. (Goosebumps) Then I went back to Amazon and bought a half dozen more of Yogananda's books (/booklets) all of which are !! Notes on all those coming soon. All that to say… That's one powerful way I pick the books I'm going to read—which is, again, in my mind, one of the most important things to consider in terms of how to read a book. In our next +1, I'll tell you more about how I actually read the book once I've decided to read it. For now… Happy reading. Here's to that nice, mild, slow-burning rapture we get connecting with wisdom from a brilliant soul. Day 1. All in. Let's go!
Today's meditation comes from The Book Of Romans in The New Testament and from the writings of Eknath Easwaran, with music by Outside The Sky.
Here It Is… This morning a friend of mine (thank you, Jon!) sent me a link to an article on Ray Dalio's meditation practice. As you know if you've been following along, I'm a big fan of Dalio and his wisdom. We've featured Notes on his great book Principles and the kids and I enjoyed his kids book as well. We've also chatted about his 5-step process for success (note: Step 2 is FAILURE!!) as part of our “win or learn” and “learning is winning” so “win or win!” philosophy. But… It wasn't until this morning that I learned about Dalio's meditation practice. He says it's his secret weapon. His approach? Transcendental meditation. Otherwise known as TM. The key features of that approach include two, twenty-minute meditation sessions. Dalio does his first session after waking up and his second before dinner. Note: He reduces the variability of his behavior to increase the likelihood of making the habit stick which—as you know if you've gone through Basic Training and/or the Mastery Series and/or Habits 101–is a scientifically proven way to master yourself. Another key feature of TM? A mantra. With Transcendental Meditation, you get your mantra from your TM teacher. You're not supposed to share it publicly. But it's something kinda like “om.” You come back to that mantra again and again and again. It's the anchor (see Meditation 101 and our collection of Notes and +1s on Meditation) that helps still your mind so you can connect to something bigger than yourself while experiencing all the other proven physiological and psychological benefits of meditation. Now… I've studied TM—and actually learned in the same room Maharishi Mahesh Yogi meditated in as I was blessed to be trained by one of his top students and teachers. I've also studied Vipassana. We chat about my experience with Vipassana in our Notes in As a Man Thinketh. We also chat about Vipassana in our Notes on Yuval Noah Harari's 21 Lessons for the 21st Century. Harari is one of my favorite writers. The lucidity of his writing is EXTRAORDINARY. Did you know he's been practicing Vipassana and meditating for TWO hours a day for DECADES? It's true. I've also practiced something called “Passage Meditation” developed by Eknath Easwaran (see those Notes) and the style taught by Nichiren Buddhism (see these Notes), and, well, a bunch of other approaches. I've also developed my own Heroic Meditation we'll talk more about soon. But… Today I want to share the new mantra meditation I'm going to start practicing as a little experiment. A single word. Can you guess what I'm choosing? … Hint: It's tattooed on my right forearm. The one-word summation of my life philosophy and ultimate target. … Areté. That's the new mantra. Areté. Areté. Areté. On the Inhale… Areté. Areté. Areté. On the Exhale… Areté. Areté. Areté. Let's close the gap between who we're capable of being and who we're actually being. Not someday. Not even some moment. Right now. And… Here's to soaking our consciousness in that ultimate target one breath at a time. +1 Areté. +1 Areté. +1 Areté. All day. Every day. Especially TODAY.
