Steven Chandler, general manager of Husk in Charleston, S.C. earned his culinary chops in the back-of-the-house, working in hotel kitchens overseeing purchasing, event planning, catering and more. But he felt his true calling was in the front-of-the-house, and he made that transition several years ago, landing at Husk in 2022. Since he joined the team, he's elevated the training program, added a bar and patio with a more casual vibe and menu and preserved the cherished restaurant's legacy while positioning it for the future. Listen as Chandler describes how his empathetic approach and holistic hospitality experience serve him well as GM, shares the keys to creating a positive culture and talks about what's next for Husk.

Steven Chandler is one of my coaching mentors. Being his client over 10 years ago dramatically improved my success. The “MindShift” he offers frees people from unnecessary pessimism and puts them back in touch with the source of their enthusiasm for work and life. Although Steve Chandler graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Creative Writing and Political Science, and spent four years in the military studying language and psychological warfare; he credits his own life experiences with failure as the most valuable tools for helping others. Steve's audiences are inspired by stories of his “low points” – it gives them hope, because they realize that they are not nearly as bad off as he was – they figure if Steve can transform his life, so can they! Steve Chandler is now the author of 30 books that have been translated into over 25 languages. His personal success coaching, public speaking and business consulting have been used by CEOs, top professionals, major universities, and over 30 Fortune 500 companies. He has twice won the national Audio of the Year award from King Features Syndicate. A popular guest on TV and radio talk shows, Steve Chandler has recently been called "the most powerful public speaker in America today." Steve is also a master coach that has helped train hundreds of coaches to transform many lives and businesses. He created the Coaching Prosperity School to assist coaches to build a strong practice and create great clients www.CoachingProsperitySchool.com You can learn more at https://www.stevechandler.com/index.html
Recently, I hosted an "Ask Me Anything" session on the topic of "The Business of Coaching" and Loubna Zarrou asked the following question: "I have been coaching many years but one struggle is how to turn it into a business when you can coach on almost anything." The advice I gave in this episode: First, I shared one of my favorite Steven Chandler quotes about the topic of "choosing a niche" for your coaching. Next, I provided the following five pieces of advice: Determine how much money that you need to generate on a monthly basis to thrive financially from your full-time self-employed coaching business. Do the math…. Can you find 1 client to pay 100% of your monthly amount within 15 to 20 hours a week of work? Can you find 2 clients to pay 50% of your monthly amount within 15 to 20 hours a week of work? Can you find 4 clients to pay 25% of your monthly amount within 15 to 20 hours a week of work? Can you find 10 clients to pay 10% of your monthly amount within 15 to 20 hours a week of work? Determine exact ideal client for that offer and go validate it. However, while searching for that exact fit, don't ignore all the other clients who would fit within that price ranged product. Commit to generating all your monthly income needs by working with as few clients as possible that would require no more than 15 to 20 hours a week of your time to serve. Once booked solid and consistently generating that revenue on a monthly basis, start adding other products and services. If you are resonating with the content that I create, you will find one or more of the following products and services extremely valuable and life transformative. 1. FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye - Healthy Leadership for Life and Ministry
How does our self-awareness relate to our health in life and in ministry? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Steven Chandler, pastor of Union Church, and author of Stop Waiting for Permission. Together, Steven and Jason look at the value of being honest with ourselves about our own brokenness, our flaws, and our hangups, and how that opens the door for God to do even more in our lives and through our ministries.Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/network------------Complimentary 1-hour Coaching Session for Pastors http://PastorServe.org/freesession------------Some key takeaways from this conversation:Stephen Chandler on ministry leaders taking time away from the church: “Here's what fear will say, fear will say if I step away from that church, it'll decrease. People won't get saved, the money will go down, leaders won't have vision and all that other goods. Jason, you know what happens every time I step away? Dude, the giving goes up, people get saved, people get baptized, and I start looking like, man, maybe I was the problem the whole time. Maybe it'd be a great church if I didn't come back. I think it's just a supernatural confirmation from God. I'm choosing to use you, but I don't need you.”Stephen Chandler on having people around you who will speak into your life: “This board is made up of brothers and fathers. Fathers are the ones I'm intimidated by. Brothers are the ones that have my back. And you need both in your life. You need fathers that, you know, hey, they will correct me. They will sit me down if need be and I honor that. But I also need brothers, that can say, hey, I'm not trending in the right direction. And I need an arm around the shoulder, not a foot in the pants. I need an arm around the shoulder of hey, man, you're doing better than you think you are.”Stephen Chandler on the importance of self-awareness for ministry leaders: "The sooner that we acknowledge that our hearts were wounded before we ever became pastors, and that our motives are never 100% pure, then we can begin to address the reality of our heart, bring it to Jesus, bring it to trusted colleagues, and start the process of healing so that we can lead and have aspirations and ambition from a healthy place instead of from an unhealthy place."-------Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? After his daughter filed a missing persons report she found out that her dad hadn't accessed his bank accounts in almost a year. While Steven struggles with substance abuse, mental illness and at times homelessness, he was getting on the right track so he could sustain himself financially and then suddenly he vanished. Episode 278: Do you want help in going after your dreams—the ones that you feel are totally unobtainable, but keep burning within you? Do you want to get better at the work you do? Do you want to finally take that plunge and move across the world? Whatever your big desire is, hiring a coach can help you obtain it. In this episode, Madelyn Moon discusses why everyone needs a coach to obtain the life you truly desire. Coaches are the reason why people are taking their dreams seriously. When we put down our money to hire a coach and declare to the Universe that we're ready, a beautiful, transformative journey begins. The Universe meets you halfway with your desire and helps you bring your dream to fruition. If you've got a dream—a vision, a burning desire, this podcast episode is for you. Show notes: "Finding expanders in life" - a coined term by Lacy Phillips Madelyn’s journey with her first coach. How Madelyn was able to afford a coach that was out of her price range at the time. Why she coached 20 people for free. “I trust that when things are not perfect—that's the way they're supposed to be.” “Every time I have made an eternal leap, the universe has rewarded me.” Currency is the root word of 'current' - currency is supposed to be flowing. Energetically, when you clamp on your money, you’re clamping on the flow. Money is like germs—you just wash it off and it comes right back. The missing part in manifestation is the action. Sometimes spending money is meeting the universe halfway. The online courses that Madelyn created. Why she finally felt confident to do retreats. Coaches are the reason why people are taking their dreams seriously. “When we’re about to make a change, we’re hyper-aware of the loss.” It’s not about the time that we’re spending with a coach—it's about the impact, which can take place in less than a minute. Finding a purpose is a lot of pressure. It can cause stress and anxiety, and creates a mindset of looking outside. What if we could reverse engineer this process and find ourselves first? Start with who you are and what are your values before seeking higher purpose in life. Core values are a way to bypass unnecessary challenges of life to get to where you want to go.Sid went through this process of uncovering his core values of connection, belief, and service. He began asking better questions, such as: what can I do to live my values every single day? Based on his core values, one avenue for him was being a coach, which involves having deep conversations with people to uncover beliefs and also grow. He immersed himself for 3 months, outlining what kind of coach he needed to be to live these values. His purpose evolved into exploring human connection at deep levels by creating spaces for people to be who they are. He then realised that if he had started the other way around, looking for purpose first, he would have gone into a skill that he's good at instead of what he enjoys. He read 3 books: Supercoach by Michael Neill, which breaks down personal growth into 10 different methods of coaching. The Prosperous Coach by Steven Chandler and Rich Litvin, which discusses how to build a business one conversation at a time. The Book of Coaching by Ajit Nawalkha and Dr. Neeta Bhushan, which outlines you as a coach, your methodology, and your business. What are core values? Core values are the framework to get to any one of your potential paths, instead of only looking at what you "should" be doing or only what you “enjoy." It's a more balanced approach.Once you discover your values, they show up everywhere. Every decision starts with: am I living in alignment with my values? It becomes a very simple framework to prevent the noise of the world from drowning you. It’s a compass of how you show up in the world. How to find your core values? Building your timelineStep 1: Go through your years of life. Ask: in order to become who I am today, what were the different events, experiences, and moments that I can remember? Don't overthink. Start from whenever you remember (e.g. 7 years old).Step 2: In each of these experiences, what was happening outside of you? Step 3: What was happening inside of you as a result of those external experiences? You must feel it in your body, go back to those moments and live them once again. Step 4: What was the core thing or things that I was valuing? Write all of them down and move on to the next moment. You will see similarities of values. Step 5: Based on all of these things that you value, if you had to categorize them, what are the ones that you value the most? Choose 3. This is a process designed to be repeated as we uncover deeper layers of emotions. Do core values change? Core values are dynamic. You add experiences and memories as you open up yourself to new ways of living as well as new perspectives on your life. Remember, core values are not something a friend or family member can suggest or that you pick from a list. Your values are who you are right now, not who you want to be. There's no shortcut. You have to go through the experience of life to discover and accept who you really are. What about conflicting core values? Even if values change over time, there will be one value that you know because you feel it in your bones. The way you learn is to ask: what was the conflict? and why was there a conflict? If that pattern of conflict persists, that means that your #1 value might actually be different. Finding core values is a lifelong discovery. Place these values where you see them often. The more you see it, the more you step into it. What can we do to use values to make a decision once you have your values? The test is to ask yourself: what would it be like if I took this decision based on this value or against this value? Then compare and contrast. You’ll start to notice that it’s never really about the decision you make, but rather the consequences of that decision. The strength to live it and accept it are embedded in your values.Tips Understand that core values exercise is an interactive and continuous process. Don't over-analyze. The beauty of this process is that whatever comes first is ALWAYS right. It’s a heart exercise. Time box this exercise, especially if you are an over-thinker.Connect with Siddharth Anantharam.

“Putting things off is the biggest waste of life: it snatches away each day as it comes, and denies us the present by promising the future. The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow, and loses today. You are arranging what lies in Fortune's control, and abandoning what lies in yours. What are you looking at? To what goal are you straining? The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately.” – Seneca Do you think too much about the future that you are not living in today? This quote from Seneca hits two really great points of the Stoics. Momento Mori, remember you will die, and because we could die at any moment, there really is no other time than now. There is now and not now. Amor Fati, love your fate. Because we have so little control over what happens to us in life, worrying about the future is worrying about something that may never happen. So when you think about it, the only thing you have control over is your choices at this moment. Many of the great philosophies and religions focus on mindfulness, of being in the present moment. What does mindfulness mean exactly? What does it mean to live in the now? To me it mean bringing my focus, my attention, my awareness to the present moment. To be fully engaged in my life, and not stuck thinking about how great things are going to be in the future, but to be present and involved with what’s going on around me and the work that I am engaged in. To be honest, I do get very stuck in the future. I think about all these great things that I want to do and create, or how much better it’s going to be....tomorrow or the next day or next week, and pretty soon, it’s next week and I didn’t get done what I wanted and I didn’t enjoy the things that happened. It takes effort to keep myself in the present and not get stuck thinking about the future. It’s a lifelong habit that I’ve built up and it’s not easy to break. But I have found that being more present and more focused on the moment, things seem more vivid and intense, it a good way. It’s like I’m more awake to the world. For example when I go on a walk in the wood near my house, if I’m making an effort to notice more of the world around me, the woods seem more colorful and the smells more sharp. It’s the difference between being half asleep and fully awake. Growing up, we’re often too focused on what life will be like in the future. When we’re in grade school we want to be in middle school. Middle school we want high school. Then off to college, career, family. And the thing is, whatever our future holds, it’s all going to happen anyway, so why not focus on enjoying today? Have you ever seen the painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges-Pierre Seurat? For those of your who’ve seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, it’s the painting that they stare at in the Art Institute of Chicago. It’s an amazing work of art that is made up of tiny points of unmixed paint. By doing so, your eye fuses the colors together to create the end color. So to create purple, Seurat would paint red dots next to blue dots until the eye saw purple. Seurat focused daily, deliberately putting each individual brushstroke to canvas, focusing on each small section to bring out the colors he wanted, until 2 years later the 10 foot painting was complete. Creating a life is the same way. If we take the time to lovingly and deliberately focus on and live in each day, in this present moment, then we have a great life each and every day. We never have a bad day. There’s a great quote by Steven Chandler in his book The Time Warrior. “Don’t create your year, create your day. Figure out the perfect day and then live it. The year will take care of itself. So will your life.” What can you do to create your perfect day? I think choosing what are the most important things for today, and then doing them with care, and focus. Let go of what you’ll do tomorrow. Tomorrow doesn’t yet exist, so is not real. Now is real, and now is the only time that you can do anything with. Don’t be busy, be effective. Are you doing something that matters or are you wasting time? Do it well. Don’t half-ass your way through something. Do it with care and focus and in a way that makes you proud. What can you do to keep yourself in the present moment? Slow down. This is one of the hardest things for me to do. But it takes time to live deliberately. We get too caught up in finishing, that we forget to enjoy the creating or the doing. Stop. Sometimes just stop and breath from time to time and look around and see the world, to be thankful. I know some people set reminders so they take time to re-center themselves. Write it down. For me, one of the most effective things I do is to get all the things in the future out of my head. I write them down so they don’t spin around in my head. I take care of it now, or I choose a time in the future to take care of it. When I do that, when I get it off my mind, it frees up brain cycles for more important things. When I don’t do that simple exercise, I spend time trying to hold onto all these ideas, and appointments and such, and half the time I forget them anyway. Living immediately helps you to worry less about the future, because your focus, your attention is on the present. This also helps you not feel overwhelmed because the future is not your focus. Now is the focus, so you only deal with the now, and ignore everything that is not now. Like Ferris Bueller says, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
