Not yet, young grasshopper, as first we have to get there. And what better way than to step into Nick Frost's Black Cab? Well, that story doesn't end well but at least we finally get to prowl the gutters looking for Tenafly Viper with the new "spiritual sequel" of Street Trash! Supporter Susan from Geek Girl Soup (https://geekgirlsoup.com) has picked some corkers in the past, and this choice is no exception. It's the 1987 body horror comedy, Street Trash. Street Trash, directed by Jim Muro, was a low-budget endeavor that became known for its outrageous blend of horror, comedy, and social commentary. The film was originally conceived as a short student project by writer Roy Frumkes, but its success led to the development of a full-length feature. Muro, who was only 21 years old at the time, brought his unique vision to the project, heavily influenced by his background in Steadicam operation, which he utilized to create dynamic and fluid camera movements that became a signature of the film's visual style. Filmed primarily in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and various locations around New York City, Street Trash captures a grimy, apocalyptic version of the city, which perfectly complements its story of melting derelicts and social decay. The film's practical effects are one of its standout features, delivering some of the most memorable and grotesque gore sequences of 1980s horror cinema. The story revolves around a batch of toxic liquor called "Tenafly Viper," which causes the homeless people who drink it to melt in vividly colorful and shocking ways. Despite its micro-budget, the production team managed to create elaborate melting effects using a combination of foam latex, prosthetics, and colorful slime. These effects, coupled with the film's darkly humorous tone, helped Street Trash gain a cult following. The film was controversial for its unflinching portrayal of societal outcasts and graphic content, but it has since been celebrated for its daring approach to blending genres and its influence on the splatter film subgenre. When consumed by the local homeless population, the drink causes their bodies to grotesquely melt, leading to a series of bizarre and horrific deaths. Amidst this gruesome madness, the film also explores the lives of various misfit characters, including two homeless brothers trying to survive on the streets, a deranged junkyard owner, and a corrupt cop, all of whom get caught up in the escalating violence and absurdity that surrounds the toxic brew. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

The drinks causes its consumers to melt, very messily. Two homeless lads find themselves up against the effects of the toxic brew, as well as going head to head with "Bronson" a Vietnam vet with sociopathic tendencies, and the owner of the junkyard they live in. The owner of a liquor store in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York City finds a case of cheap booze ("Tenafly Viper") in his basement. It is more than 60 years old and has gone bad, but he decides to sell it to the local hobos anyway. Unfortunately, anyone who drinks it melts away hideously. At the same time, two homeless brothers find different ways to cope with homelessness while they make their residence in a local junkyard while one employee, a female cashier and clerk, frequently tends to both of them. Meanwhile, an overzealous cop (Bill Chepil) is trying to get to the bottom of all the deaths, all the while trying to end the tyranny of a deranged Vietnam veteran named Bronson (Vic Noto), who has made his self-proclaimed "kingdom" at the junkyard with a group of homeless vets under his command as his personal henchmen. The film is littered with darkly comedic deaths and injuries. It also contains the notorious "severed privates" scene where a group of homeless people play catch with the severed genitals of one of their number, as he futilely attempts to recover it.

While not a Troma film in name, Street Trash definitely fits the bill in spirit. This film is one of the most revered “melt movies,” spawning several imitators. Originally, director, James Muro Jr., created a 15-minute short film of the same name. He later teamed with his former professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and screenwriter, Roy Frumkes, to turn the gross out short into a feature film. Of note, Roy Frumkes played the pie face zombie in Dawn of the Dead, and his likeness can be seen on many posters for Street Trash, as the businessman soaked in yellow acid.  The basic plot revolves around a local dump and a ragtag group of miscreants and derelicts, all trying to get their hands on some Tenafly Viper. What they don’t know, is that this wine is made of something far worse than sour grapes, resulting in some tremendous effects.  While none of the actors went on to major onscreen success, director James Muro Jr. would later be the Steadicam operator for The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, True Lies, and Titanic. Sadly, he never returned to direct another feature film, only occasionally directing TV after Street Trash.  The film mainly stands out for its makeup effects, headed by Jennifer Aspinal. You may recall that Aspinal had worked on Toxic Avenger, Twisted Souls, and Spookies, before abandoning the horror genre to work on SNL and Mad TV.If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.
