NOT KNOWING HOW A DEAD LANGUAGE SOUNDED—episode seventeen of the of The Tale and the Tongue series—follows a conversation with multi-media producer, writer, public speaker, educator, audio remixer, DJ, and owner of the Comatonse Recordings record label Terre Thaemlitz, and Sonia Fernández Pan, the host of this podcast series. The title of this podcast is inspired by a comment that appeared during the meeting with Terre Thaemlitz. She proposed a future in which aspects of the past are unknown as a critical gesture towards the ongoing and growing demand for visibility and preservation of mainstream, but not only, archival systems. Like any other medium, archives and documents produce ideology and are produced by ideology. Following more of Terre Thaemlitz's comments, this podcast conversation is also not excluded from how criticism of the system is part of the system. Because, as he says, analysis and artistic work is often confused with political organisation. The relational dynamics of gender also emerged in this conversation with Terre Thaemlitz. Like Brigitte Vasallo—author, activist and former guest of the Promise No Promises! podcast series, episode 27 The Monogamy of the System—he is very nuanced about the widespread belief that removing gender from language removes its impact on social realities. On the current situation of gender pronouns, Sonia Fernández Pan also shared with Terre Thaemlitz her thoughts on other uses for the pronoun “they.” Sometimes Sonia Fernández Pan perceives in this pronoun a chance to imply the plurality of the self: “they” in relation to the “I” and not so much to the “she” or “he.” We are often asked to speak in key words that make us less complex than we are. Identity as a comfort zone or final destination contradicts the identity discomfort of so many lives. Being different like others is not the same as being different from others.
INTERVIEW & TRACKLIST > https://inverted-audio.com/mix/black-light-smoke American producer @black-light-smoke steps up to deliver the 374th edition of the IA MIX Series, interweaving a subterranean masterclass of deep club sonorities, bolstered with his own edits of classic tracks from Maurizio and Chip E. Originally from Chicago, Jordan Lieb studied in Massachusetts before relocating to New York in 2001 to pursue a career in music. He met Francis Harris (circa 2010), whilst Harris was looking for a studio to mix down his debut album ‘Leland‘. This initial friendship blossomed into a mutual kinship that resulted in Jordan releasing the first two vinyl releases on @scissorandthread. Jordan's second studio album ‘Ghosts‘ is a woozy deep house LP packing 15 chugging grooves, analogue synth melodies and sultry vocals that will appeal to the deepest of house heads. In the interview below, we find out more about the makings of the album, its cryptic artwork, collaborations with vocalist Léah Lazonick and his long-standing admiration for all things Terre Thaemlitz, alongside studio gear and his approach to using social media.

Tonight's edition wraps around three wonderful longform ambient pieces I've re-discovered - Bill Laswell + Terre Thaemlitz' Insectoidal Regression, David Newlyn's Church Fires and Eluvium's Static Nocturne. That and a few other choice works makes tonight's episode a special listen. Enjoying the show? Please support BFF.FM with a donation. Playlist 0′00″ Accepted Isolation by Alonefold on Signpost Horizons (Rural Colours) 14′20″ Insectoidal Regression by Bill Laswell and Terre Thaemlitz on Web (Subharmonic) ⭐️I love this track. It's my favorite on the record (released 1995), and a pretty unique collaboration for Bill Laswell, who usually is doing some pretty loud free jazz. However, in the spirit of Laswell's 'collision music' concept bringing Terre Thaemlitz into the mix is a perfect choice. 33′44″ Church Fires by David Newlyn on Church Fires (Polar Seas Recordings) ⭐️An absolutely lovely 40+ minutes of shifting tones, some of the most gentle and enjoyable work I've heard. This came out in 2015, following a few really great records that are a bit more 'conventional' for Newlyn (more making use of his skills as a pianist). 77′30″ Static Nocturne by Eluvium on Static Nocturne (Watership Sounds) ⭐️Everything you'd expect from a long Eluvium piece. By far my favorite of Matthew Cooper's work is the rare CATALIN record , but in terms of sheer atmospheric weight and variety of textures, 2010's Static Nocturne is top-notch work. In this episode Jared speaks with Terre Thaemlitz, a music producer, DJ, writer and public speaker, whose work over three decades offers uncompromising critical examinations of media distribution, queer identity, and non-essentialist transgenderism.Raised in Missouri before moving to New York in the late 1980s, Terre was a resident DJ at storied queer nightclub Sally's II in the early ‘90s. Since then, Terre has released music, critical writing, and video via her own Comatonse Recordings, as well as independent labels including Germany's influential Mille Plateaux. Based in Japan since the early 2000s, he also continues to perform and record under the deep house alias DJ Sprinkles, releasing the acclaimed 'Midtown 120 Blues' in 2008.Image courtesy Comatonse Recordings.

Longtime label friend James Lotion is a Dutch transplant living in Copenhagen. As part of the queer and trans DJ collective SWEAT, they hosts parties and events with focus on uplifting queer and trans artists and creating safer dance floors at club nights in Copenhagen and Malmö. In their own words: ‘’I feel very inspired and empowered by artists that use their music as a platform for their activism, and decided to highlight some of their work in this mix. There is a lot to tell about many of these artists, but here is a (very) short intro to three artists that are particularly dear to me.’’ DJ Hvad (Danish for What) is a well-known experimental artist from Copenhagen who o.a. uses his music and performances to speak out against racism and the anti-immigration policies of the Danish government. Terre Thaemlitz is an ambient artist/composer that focuses on themes of gender and sexual identity, sex work and the HIV crisis. I highly recommend checking out her work and writings on comatonse.com Utra-Red and is a LA-based group that explores urban social relations o.a. through sound recordings. Their song N30, which I included in this mix, is fx. composed exclusively from site recordings made during street protests against the World Trade Organization Third Ministerial Conference in Seattle in 1999.
