In this episode of 5 O'Clock Apron Podcast Claire cooks with RNLI lifeguard Gavin Philpotts. The podcast is recorded in the sand dunes above Sennen Beach, just below the lifeguard hut. With the sun shining bright and the lifeguard's radios in bleeping distance, Claire and Gavin carve a space to cook with a lifeguard rescue board as their work surface. Claire arrives with some mackerel bought that morning in Newlyn and the pair get busy preparing a tabbouleh to go alongside, Gavin also contributes some roasted beets which he brought from home that morning. With the iconic 90's TV series Baywatch as Claire's reference for all things lifeguard, coupled with the countless lifeguards Claire and her family spot on Cornish beaches each summer, meeting and cooking alongside Gavin was a real highlight. We talk saving lives, long distance swimming, rip currents, weever fish and where lifeguards go in the wintertime.Huge thanks to RNLI for covering Gavin as he cooked with us, after all lifesaving can never stop, for whatever the reason, my podcast included.Find out more about the RNLI and Sennen beach here: Sennen Beach - RNLI Lifeguarded Beach in CornwallFollow Claire at 5 O' Clock apron on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/5oclockapronMake this recipe. Fathom: getting below the surface of the UK fishing industry.
For episode 5, Fathom headed to the launch event organised by the first-ever Young Fishermen Network, here in the UK. We speak to young fishermen Will Jaycock, a 20-year-old 3rd generation fisherman from Looe whose heart is set on a sustainable future for fishing, and 28-year-old Tom Lambourn from Newlyn who only decided to pursue fishing full-time after graduating from university. Also featured are the CFPO's Chris Ranford, and Matilda Phillips in her new role as Network Coordinator. This episode broadcasts some of the unconventional and refreshing ways in which the Young Fishermen Network are bringing young fishermen together, to talk fishing gear, life at sea and the future of fishing. The view is simple, young fishermen need to feel like they are a part of something, in a profession with a viable future. In this episode, Tom and Will talk about how welcoming it has been to meet up with other young people who fish, and offer their vision for how a young people's network can develop the relationship between older generations and mentors, and strengthen the relationship between fishing communities and ports across the UK.CFPO Chief Executive Chris Ranford, and co-ordinator of the Young Fishermen Network Matilda Phillips, tackle the issue of retaining young fishermen already in the industry while ensuring new generations of fishermen are coming through. They reveal the practical nature of bringing people into commercial fishing with more meetups, career events at schools, and active social media platforms offering behind-the-scenes information for young people. Listen and learn how the network is developing future leaders of the industry, and hear from young fishermen themselves on being closer to the decision-making processes determining their future on the seas. The fourth series of the Fathom podcast has been produced by the Cornish Fish Producers' Organisation (CFPO) with funding from The Seafarers' Charity.

The SNP is meeting in Aberdeen - throughout the party conference season we've been catching up with the rural affairs spokespeople. Today we talk to the Secretary for Rural Affairs in the Scottish Government, the SNP's Mairi Gougeon. A project offering fishermen free dental checks and treatment on the harbourside has got underway in Newlyn in Cornwall. Smiles at Sea will be visiting eight fishing ports in Devon and Cornwall between now and December. The demands of being at sea means it can be hard to visit a dentist. The scheme is also helping children in coastal communities be seen by a dentist. All week we're taking a look at land-based education. A parliamentary committee launched an inquiry into it last month. The EFRA committee is looking at education from primary to universities to see how effectively its making students aware of the opportunities in agriculture and equipping them with the right skills. We speak to Landex who represents 39 colleges and universities in the sector. Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Is it even possible to imagine what Britain would have been without seafaring? Braving the waters beyond our harbours can be traced back eight and a half thousand years - the earliest boats made crossings as soon as Britain broke away from the continent. You can trace the ages of Britain through the vessels that have been launched to and from her shores - Roman warships, Viking longships, William the Conqueror's flagship Mora and many more besides. In this episode recorded at the 2022 Chalke Valley history festival, conservationist and author of 'The Ship Asunder', Tom Nancollas joins Dan to talk about Britain's seafaring history through three aspects of three vessels: the mast of the steamship SS Great Eastern designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the hull of the Rosebud- a Cornwall-based fishing boat at the centre of the 1930s Newlyn villagers protest to save their condemned properties, and the figurehead of the Rosa Tacchini wrecked on the Isles of Scilly.Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal Patmore. If you want to get in touch with the podcast, you can email us at ds.hh@historyhit.com, we'd love to hear from you!If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today!Download the History Hit app from the Google Play store.Download the History Hit app from the Apple Store. JollyRoger is set to release its newest single, ‘Band of Brothers, ' on December 9th, 2022. The song is a story of loss in the fishing community and was written by Dorian Arnold who is the Aunt of JR's Mandolin player / vocalist - Samantha. It describes the heartbreak of people not returning from sea and tells the tale of those left behind with delicate acoustic guitar moving to an emotive and powerful electric guitar solo, reminiscent of ‘Zombie' by the cranberries. Dorian Arnold (the songwriter) holds the subject matter very close to her heart, she says: ‘Throughout the '90s, I dated a Newlyn man, an ex-fisherman, & I spent a lot of time with the close-knit fishing community there. The loss of the Margaretha Maria with all 4 of its crew haunts me still, & I am reminded of those sad days every time I hear a news report of another missing boat somewhere off the shores of the UK. Those lost boats, their crews, the grieving families & friends are what inspired me to write this song.' The music video features Jolon Williams, whose father was one of the lives lost on the Margaretha Maria, and will be released alongside the single. JollyRoger is working with the Fishermen's Mission to donate all physical and digital download sales to their cause of supporting fishing communities throughout the UK.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Helen Glover returns to her beloved childhood patch of Newlyn and Penzance in Cornwall to explore the area where she grew up and discover how it's changed since she was a girl. Helen is a double Olympic gold-medal winner and her love of physical activity and the outdoors was shaped by her childhood environment. She recalls running along the prom as part of her training as a schoolgirl athlete, and reflects on fond memories of her Dad's small but legendary ice-cream business, wheeling supplies up down the road in an old pram. Helen also visits the Penlee Lifeboat with long-time RNLI Coxswain, Patch Harvey and meets the Battery Belles, an outdoor swimming group who plunge into the sea every morning. She considers how the cliffs she's known all her life are gradually changing through relentless erosion, and speaks to the director of an art school who ran a mass painting event to raise awareness and funds to protect the landscape he loves. She also meets an artist who had a very near miss when the cliff he was painting under collapsed shortly after he left. Helen also reflects on the sad fact that her favourite beaches are now littered with plastic, and catches up with a young beach cleaner who devotes hours to picking up and making art from other people's waste. Contributors include: Tina Riggall of the Battery Belles; Landscape painter Paul Lewin; Henry Garfit of the Newlyn School of Art; Patch Harvey, RNLI; Louis-Matisse litter picker and artist. Fathom: getting below the surface of the UK fishing industry.
The Fathom podcast has partnered with The National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations (NFFO) to produce a series of informative and highly topical episodes, focusing on the challenges and opportunities facing UK fishermen in the post-Brexit landscape. In this third episode, NFFO CEO Barrie Deas and CFPO CEO Chris Ranford are joined by Newlyn-based fisherman Andrew Pascoe as Fathom embarks on a series-first – a discussion centred around just one species of fish. This episode takes a granular look at all of the past, present and future issues with sea bass, which is timely given that it is a frontrunner for a new fisheries management plan. DEFRA is currently seeking the industry's views on this, and you can find out how you can get involved using this link. Bass is a financially lucrative and reported by fishermen to be a widely available species. But due to a considerable amount of catch restrictions, and limits to catch authorisation, it has often been a subject of contention. In this episode, Andrew and Barrie discuss entitlements, and whether it looks like there might be some flexibility on the horizon now bass will have its own fisheries management plan. We hear from Carl Davies, a fisherman working out of Conwy in Wales who spoke about the challenge he faced when stock levels of sea bass dropped, while also getting inundated with paperwork after upgrading his vessel. Carl would like to see “mini-entitlements” to be given so that inshore vessels, which are dependent on following seasonality, are provided with more options. Mike Warner from A Passion for Seafood, based in Suffolk emphasises the importance of being able to use all methods available to catch bass when they're in abundance and would like to see an up to date management procedure to that effect. Current rules are having a disastrous impact on east-coast fisheries and coastal communities, according to Mike, with new entrants struggling to find a way in. Listen in to hear Barrie and Andrew's response to these comments and questions in our bumper bass episode. And in the next episode, we'll also be getting DEFRA to respond to some of these concerns. Lamorna Ash is a British writer, and her award-winning book ‘Dark, Salt, Clear: Life in a Cornish fishing town' documents her time spent in the Cornish town of Newlyn. We spoke about what it is to fully immerse yourself into a new environment, and what she took away with her, from her experiences at sea.
In this Candid Craic, we talk to Colin Newlyn about his mission to decrapify work. Colin explains how, despite the rhetoric, we seem to be moving away from the trust and autonomy of the working conditions he experienced in his early career to a more command and control structure, often infected by bullying and toxicity, and replete with technologies, practices and processes that seem to hinder productivity and innovation. He explains how he has begun to take the concept of self-organisation increasingly seriously, seeing it as a holistic toolkit that can create better organisations if only we could work out a way to strip away prevailing power dynamics. He further explains how he has taken up the role of an "agitator from the margins", trying to translate and interpret complex ideas into more digestible forms that people find engaging and useful. We then take a fascinating journey into the golden age of pirates, with Colin explaining how they perhaps invented the democratic-participatory organisational form; why recreating it might not require the complex overthinking that dominates the market; and how simple truths and human-centric skills might be more than enough.
On this episode we hear from Colin Newlyn ()I know what it's like when work is good. And I also know what it's like when work is crap.Sadly, it's crap for way too many people and that's completely unnecessary, counter-productive, and just plain wrong! 40 years on, the dramatic story of the Penlee lifeboat disaster. Mousehole, 19th December 1981. The famous Christmas harbour lights illuminate the fishing village in this quiet corner of Cornwall. But a storm is coming and the events of this night will leave a mark on the community that will never fade. 40 years after the Penlee lifeboat disaster, Solomon Browne is a poetic, drama-documentary, weaving together monologue, recorded testimonies and the genuine radio communications from the disaster. Written by Newlyn resident Callum Mitchell, the programme was made in Cornwall, with the help of some of the family members of the men lost. The result is both a celebration and memorial to the men of the lifeboat – Solomon Browne: Trevelyan Richards, Stephen Madron, Nigel Brockman, John Blewett, Charles Greenhaugh, Kevin Smith, Barrie Torrie and Gary Wallis. Helping us tell their story are: Neil Brockman, son of Nigel Brockman. Neil was 17 at the time and also a member the lifeboat crew, alongside his dad. Jane Torrie is the sister of Barrie Torrie. The night of the disaster she was busy babysitting her brother's two children, as he set out into the storm. Jo Payne, is the daughter of Charlie Greenhaugh, member of the lifeboat crew and also landlord of the Ship Inn that overlooks Mousehole's harbour. And Baden Madron, brother of Stephen Madron. The Penlee lifeboat disaster was a tragedy that tore the village of Mousehole apart, days before Christmas, but through the darkness of the storm, shines the light of a coastal community intent on remembering the bravery of its lost neighbours. Callum Mitchell is a writer from West Cornwall. He was Assistant Director on Mark Jenkin's BAFTA-winning film Bait (Early Day Films/BFI), as well as the forthcoming Enys Men (Bosena/Film 4). Callum is an Associate Artist at Hall For Cornwall and was the recipient of the Nick Darke Talent Award 2020. He has spent the past year on attachment as part of the BBC Writersroom Cornish Voices programme. Solomon Browne is his first work for radio. Two lively meditations on our relationship with the sea and shoreline which are also memoirs. As part of her postgraduate cultural anthropology masters, Lamorna Ash elected to return to her mother's Cornish roots to embed herself in Newlyn's fishing community. There she experienced first-hand the brutal lessons of life at sea and came to appreciate both the challenges facing an industry in peril and the privileges she had taken for granted. The result, Dark, Salt, Clear: Life in a Cornish Fishing Town has struck a chord with a forcibly isolated public and been Radio 4's Book of the Week. Cornwall-based Lisa Woollett's Rag and Bone celebrates the environmentally friendly pleasures of picking over what the waters throw up, from mudlarking on the Thames to beachcombing in the far west, while charting her family's association with recycling what others throw out. The BBC's Petroc Trelawny interviewed Lamorna and Lisa at North Cornwall Book Festival 2021.

However, in the spirit of Laswell's 'collision music' concept bringing Terre Thaemlitz into the mix is a perfect choice. 33′44″ Church Fires by David Newlyn on Church Fires (Polar Seas Recordings) ⭐️An absolutely lovely 40+ minutes of shifting tones, some of the most gentle and enjoyable work I've heard. This came out in 2015, following a few really great records that are a bit more 'conventional' for Newlyn (more making use of his skills as a pianist). 77′30″ Static Nocturne by Eluvium on Static Nocturne (Watership Sounds) ⭐️Everything you'd expect from a long Eluvium piece. By far my favorite of Matthew Cooper's work is the rare CATALIN record , but in terms of sheer atmospheric weight and variety of textures, 2010's Static Nocturne is top-notch work. Check out the full archives on the website.
It was great to talk to chef Bruce Rennie from The Shore in Penzance, Cornwall. Bruce is the sole chef in the kitchen; his philosophy is simple; he sources the best quality and freshest fish from the Newlyn market daily, emphasising sustainability and quality and supporting the local fishermen. By creating dishes focusing on local vegetables & herbs, some from his garden, most from local farms. Find out more about The Shore Restaurant and follow on Instagram; follow Bruce on Youtube if you are looking for inspiration. Big thank you to episode sponsor Bizimply.

Another fortnight's passed and we're already at the point of only being happy about the Euros for the excuse to drink on a school night - seriously, how are people still talking about it when there's so much better about to watch? This week we delve into Season 2 of Feel Good and Becoming A God In Central Florida, plus of course the books we've been devouring (Tabitha Lasley's extraordinary Sea State and David Mitchell's riotous Utopia Avenue) along with our favourite short-form literature: stupid tweets, and we may have beaten the toenail one. Our guest this week is the serene and beautifully cerebral Lamorna Ash, author of previous BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week Dark, Salt, Clear: Life in a Cornish Fishing Town. In her honest, hilarious and heartwarming chat with Becky, they discuss what drew her to drop life as she knew it and move to Newlyn, the friendships she found there and of course, what gets her enthused on the daily. If you're a fan of writing, pasta and cult movies, you're gonna love it.And for the big one... For a while now we've been beavering away behind the scenes and we are finally delighted to announce OUR FIRST LIVE SHOW! On Wednesday 21st July you can join us at the beautiful Ocean Studios in Plymouth (or if you're further afield, online) for an evening of chat, performances, food, beers and bants. We cannot WAIT, especially given that we'll be joined for a live podcast recording by Suzy Bennett, award-winning Plymouth-based comedian you may know from support dates for Jimmy Carr and more, and the glorious also award-winning, Glastonbury and Maida Vale-playing, Mystery Jets and Robert Plant supporting Ferris & Sylvester! We know too that everyone's erring towards being stone cold broke (us too) and so the tickets are pay what you feel and in limited numbers. We can't wait to see you there!! Work become cluttered with crap in the form of policies, bullshit jobs, outdated procedures, compliance based surveys etc. etc. This weeks guest Colin Newlyn is on a mission to decrapify work, and shares why we need to be like the Pirates of old to do so.
Lamorna Ash talks about her book Dark, Salt, Clear with EconTalk host Russ Roberts. Ash leaves London and moves to the small fishing village of Newlyn, near where her mother grew up on the Cornish coast. In Newlyn, everything revolves around fishing. Ash gets herself a bunk on a trawler and quickly learns how to gut fish with sharp knives on a rocking boat in the middle of the night. And so much more.
Lamorna Ash (@LamornaAsh) is the author of Dark, Salt, Clear: The Life of a Fishing Town (Bloombury). Her background in anthropology served her well as she immersed herself in the fishing town of Newlyn. Conor Tallon spoke to Michael Waldron from the Crawford Art Gallery outside in their garden café about this weeks offering.... It's time for a ‘Guinness' with this WORK OF THE WEEK! May Guinness, that is.Not only does Portrait Study (c.1930) reveal May Guinness' artistic influences but it also suggests her later collecting habits. Slightly downcast in a brown felt hat, the subject of this study is pensive and appears to be a thoroughly modern woman, much like the artist was herself.Descended from brewer Arthur Guinness, May Guinness (1863-1955) was also a nurse and was awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1917 for her brave service in the French army during the Battle of Verdun (1916).Although less experimental than some of her other works, this painting combines a Fauvist handling of colour and free brushwork with some of the spatial and formal aspects of Cubism. Both modernist art movements would have a pronounced effect on Guinness, who had begun to pursue her artistry in the 1890s as a watercolourist.Extensively travelled throughout her life, Guinness spent time in Paris in the early twentieth century, where she encountered the work of Henri Matisse. Having studied with Norman Garstin at Newlyn, alongside Mildred Anne Butler, she would later work with Andre Lhote, as did fellow Irish artists Evie Hone, Mainie Jellett, and Norah McGuinness. She also collected paintings by Matisse and Pablo Picasso.Portrait Study (c.1930) by May Guinness is featured in lucid abnormalities, our current exhibition in the historic Gibson Galleries (Floor 1). Welcome to Create Shift podcast season 6 ep1, a deep dive into the immune system from a holistic perspective with guest Emma Newlyn. As I write this it's Wednesday on week two of lockdown in the UK. We find ourselves navigating entirely uncharted waters. Our lives, work and entire worlds are changing. It's challenging and scary to say the least. And yet there is - I think - some hope to be found in all of this. The systems we've known for so long are crumbling, and with that comes the chance for different and perhaps better systems to be built in their place. I hope that holistic living and the things we talk about on this podcast may play more of a role in this new world. Perhaps this season of the podcast can support you to gently ask questions of what kind of life you'd like to return to, and encourage you to find the ways you can best support yourself and those around you right now. In today's episode returning guest Emma Newlyn and I talk about the immune system and offer practical suggestions for ways we can all support our immunity. We were going to kick off this series with Helen Glover exploring Newlyn in Cornwall: on an RNLI lifeboat, and with open-water swimmers... However, at the last minute, Covid19 stymied our plans. Instead of the wild open countryside of Cornwall, she's reporting from the confines of her back garden, on the River Thames, in Buckinghamshire. Luckily, she's married to the naturalist Steve Backshall, so she has access to a ready-made expert who helps to explain the wildlife in their midst. Producer: Karen Gregor
A new feature for the podcast! For the next few seasons Emma Newlyn will be returning to chat to me about seasonal living and holistic health. We'll share where we're at, things we've been thinking about and working on when it comes to holistic health. We'll talk about Ayurvedic seasonal living guidance for the current season, and share lots of practical tips and guidance for you. So, enjoy the first in this new feature where we discuss tips for living well in late Winter - early Spring. Interested in 1:1 Holistic Health coaching? Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com ANDREW LAW emailed: "Hi There, I'm a Newlyn-based folk fiddle player and a Survivor of childhood sexual abuse. As part of my now, nearly 50 year journey of recovery, I have recorded a CD of folk music from Cornwall and around the UK, alongside a number of other Newlyn and Penzance-based folk musicians. The CD is called "The Long and the Short of It" and every penny from the CD sales is being donated to the amazing Aurora Foundation for People Abused in Childhood. I am wondering whether you would be interested in featuring the CD and supporting this really important cause." Murphy emailed photos: "Good evening! (Or at least where I am right now) Was just finishing up #427 and I gotta say I absolutely adored it. Been a year I think since I last wrote to the podcast. Either way, thought you might be interested on what I'm doing while listening to your podcast. It's not that good so far but I've been working on carving a spoon in my Native Art Studio class. It's very much a work in progress right now because I've never done this before. I'm kinda proud of it though! (Sorry 'bout the camera angles, they came out funny ) Thank you so much for keeping this show alive and thriving with beautiful music!!" Margaret Zavala emailed on Facebook: "Hi finally I can listen to my favorite music, any where I go. Just one question are you doing music for tartan week in NEW YORK. The Parade is April 6?" Michael Finaly emailed on Facebook: "Hi Marc, so I've been trying to plan a trip to the UK and Ireland for my daughter and I, but I'm a bit worried about how Brexit is going to work out over there. But this show helps to keep my hopes up that I'll be able to show my little girl where her grandfather grew up, and get to really understand the centuries long story of her family. But in the mean time, come to Memphis, we have great food, music, and it is the home of The King, just saying... Keep up the good work." William Carter emailed photos: "Listening while taking down drape out of a ceiling after a wedding. The song “An Buachillin Ban” by Bellow Bridge moved me to tears. Thank you for this podcast!" Barry emailed on Facebook: "Marc, You asked for feedback, so here's some - Please, keep your SJW views out of the music podcast. Make it a sacred place just for the music. It's about Celtic music and the culture. NOTHING else. PLEASE!" Thanks Barry. But my quick response is no. First off, if someone attacks my friend, as well as a guest host of this podcast, I will defend them. That's all there is to it. But it seems you did not listen to my SJW rant. That's what this podcast is about. If we do not defend our Celtic culture in ALL of its diversity, we will lose it. I will defend the women of Celtic music. I will defend the different shapes and colors of Celtic music. I might not spend all my time talking about it. But it will be here. And again. If you don't like that, if that's not for you, that's fine. I respectfully suggest you not listen. Because THIS is a part of what Celtic culture is all about. You can take it or leave it. I will not compromise my defense of Celtic music and culture when it comes to diversity. So again, if you don't support the social justice of the Celts, then I wish you all the best.
This episode is for those people who love animals and art because in it, I interview Jenny Hand, curator at Munnings Art Museum. Alfred Munnings was a famous 20th century impressionist painter, particular known for his paintings of horses. The objects Jenny picked though, are actually remarkably animal free - they are the sketchbooks from his years living in Cornwall. Listen in to learn more about a rather tragic period in Munnings life, and be reminded that he was rather good at depicting people and not just horses too. To view pages from the sketchbooks, visit Ployradford.com.
In episode 4 of season 1 of Create Shift I'm joined by yoga teacher, writer and therapist Emma Newlyn. Our chat covers all sorts of topics from our need to recognise how interconnected we are with the world around us, how advancements in industry and technology have impacted modern day humans and the ancient Indian health and wellbeing system of Ayurveda. You can read the full show notes with links to all resources discussed at being-change.com. (http://being-change.com/create-shift-s1ep4-emma-newlyn/)

With Francine Stock. "I wanna be like you, I wanna talk like you, be like you too" could easily be the refrain sung by Hollywood producers intent on flooding the market with re-boots, remakes, sequels and prequels. As The Jungle Book is the latest to get a computer-generated makeover, Francine talks to the King Of The Swingers, director Jon Favreau. Many of us who live in the city dream about moving to the country when they retire. Many cinephiles dream about moving to the country and setting up a cinema. Alastair Till and Suzie Sinclair have done just that. They sold their business in London and built a cinema in Newlyn in Cornwall, without any previous experience of the film industry. Francine pays them a visit to see how they're getting on. Director Agnieszka Holland recalls her life in exile after she defected to the West from her home country, Poland, in 1981, and what happened when the communist authorities stopped her contacting her daughter.
We talked with Jamie Newlyn of the MUA about the early days of the MUA youth moment, then Dean Summers joins us to talk about his work with the ITF and swimming the English Channel.
In the third in a series of inspirational walks for Ramblings, Clare Balding is in Cornwall where she is joined by writer and storyteller, Anna Maria Murphy. Inspired by the story of Mary Kelynack, an 84 year old Cornish fishwife who walked from Newlyn to London in 1851, Anna decided to walk all over Cornwall meeting people along the way and gathering stories to inspire her writing. Using ancient routes and seldom used footpaths, Anna set off with a notebook and pen and describes her journey as possibly the single most inspirational thing she has ever done in her life. Today, Clare joins Anna to walk from the small coastal fishing town of Looe to Polperro, the village where Anna was born. Although this route usually forms part of the popular South West Coast Path, Clare and Anna choose to head inland following woodland footpaths and the 'roads less travelled' of Cornwall before heading to Talland Bay where they pick up the coast path for the last section of the walk. Who will they meet along the way? Presenter: Clare Balding Producer: Helen Chetwynd.
