What a great way to start off the new year! Jumping right in with this excellent mix from friend of the show, Andy McNeill. Andy records as Maple Mountain Sunburst and he released a wonderful album last year - https://maplemountainsunburst.bandcamp.com/album/ecstatic He also did a guest mix for us last year which you can find here - Mixcloud & Low Light Mixes Blog. My favorite discovery in this mix is the third track, "My Dog's Eyes" by Zammuto. I am blown away each time I hear it. One of my favorite track of 2024 is also included in the mix - Andy's own "Pop-a-matic." So good! The rest of the mix a great as well. Here's what Andy says about his latest creation: "Cycles, patterns and joy in repetition. I'll paraphrase redditer Waves_of_awesome who said strongly repetitive music has the ability to transport the listener to a meditative state. “… repeating passages echo like a mantra, almost hypnotizing you”. It's a fundamental yet unpremeditated element in my musical endeavours. A lot of different genres represented here — not really intentionally, I just wanted to include some favourites and influential tracks. But wait where's O Superman? It's Gonna Rain? I guess we'll have to do a part two. I hope you all enjoy the journey." - Andy >>>Links to all the music used in this mix
La repetición está presente desde las ceremonias tribales hasta los viejos salones; se practicaba en la Edad Media y es básica, en forma de loop, en la música electrónica. Writer/director Jeff Greenstein (Will and Grace, Desperate Housewives, Friends) joins us again this week to unpack an album - and artist - that continues to get him spectacularly high: 'Big Science' by avant-garde titan Laurie Anderson. Laurie Anderson is bucket list. The artist, violinist, and poet has been exploring the world in her unique way for decades. She caught our breath releasing O Superman, and has continued to bring play, humour, and curiosity into all she does.Laurie was also the yin to Lou Reed's yang, as a life and creative partner; putting on concerts for dogs, and most recently feeding her and his writing into a supercomputer to see what AI would spit out, in their voice. That was the catalyst for me asking Laurie to Take 5; and her work in AI as an artist over the past few years explores all the questions we're having today about machine learning. Settle in, this is such a poetic conversation, full of great wisdom and plenty of laughs as well. I loved speaking with Laurie about music, and loved how much she embraced the theme I gave her, of duality. From Marianne Faithfull to Maggie Rogers, this is an extraordinary conversation with an all time great.Marianne Faithful – Falling in Love Again Ornette Coleman – Lonely WomanLou Reed – Magic And Loss (The Summation)Bob Dylan – Don't Think Twice, It's AlrightMaggie Rogers – AlaskaKate Crawford's atlas of sound.

Legendariska artisten Laurie Anderson ställer ut farfars falska fotografier i Stockholm. P1 Kultur träffade Laurie Anderson inför hennes utställning "Looking into a mirror sideways" på Moderna museet i Stockholm.
Synopsis On today's date in 1885, the Paris Opera gave the first performance of “Le Cid,” the 11th opera written by the French composer Jules Massenet. “Le Cid” is set in medieval Spain and tells the story of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, a legendary hero who defended his country against the Moors. The same story inspired a 1961 movie titled “El Cid,” starring—who else?—Charlton Heston. But back in 1890, the New Orleans Opera introduced Massenet's opera to American audiences and reached New York City in 1897, serving as a vocal showcase for turn-of-the-century superstars of the early Metropolitan Opera. Enrico Caruso made a famous recording of the opera's most famous excerpt—Rodrigo's Act III aria, “O souverain, o juge, o pere,” which translates as “Oh Lord, Oh Judge, Oh Father.” Unlikely as it may seem, this aria inspired a pop hit in 1981, when composer and performance artist Laurie Anderson translated its opening line as “O Superman, O Judge, O Mom and Dad.” As a credit to the French composer, Laurie Anderson‘s “O Superman” is even subtitled For Massenet. Trained as a classical violinist with the Chicago Youth Symphony, Laurie Anderson soon shifted to a variety of electronically-altered fiddles, and one of her albums is titled, appropriately, Life on a String. "Le Classico" de Sébastien Ministru : "Les Souffrances du jeune Werther" de Goethe. « Werther. Laurie Anderson is an American avant-garde artist, composer, musician, and film director whose work spans performance art, pop music, and multimedia projects. Initially trained in violin and sculpting, Anderson pursued a variety of performance art projects in New York during the 1970s, focusing particularly on language, technology, and visual imagery. She became more widely known outside the art world when her single "O Superman" reached number two on the UK singles chart in 1981. Her debut album Big Science was released the following year. She also starred in and directed the 1986 concert film Home of the Brave.Anderson is a pioneer in electronic music and has invented several devices that she has used in her recordings and performance art shows. In 1977, she created a tape-bow violin that uses recorded magnetic tape on the bow instead of horsehair and a magnetic tape head in the bridge. In the late 1990s, she collaborated with Interval Research to develop an instrument she called a "talking stick," a six-foot (1.8 m) long baton-like MIDI controller that can access and replicate sounds.Support the show

This week, Shane Harris talks with pioneering multi-media artist Laurie Anderson. A retrospective of her work, called “The Weather,” is currently showing at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC. Several of Anderson's works explore themes of security, terrorism, and surveillance. Her piece “Habeas Corpus” is a monumental scale video and sculpture installation about Mohammed el Gharani, who was imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay for seven years. Anderson talks about her life in New York during the pandemic, her creative influences, and the surprising ways that her storytelling intersects with national security. For instance, her biggest musical hit, “O Superman,” was inspired by the Iran hostage crisis. Chatter is a production of Lawfare and Goat Rodeo.

Russell & Robert meet LIVING LEGEND Laurie Anderson, one of America’s most reknowned – and daring – creative PIONEERS! Known primarily for her multimedia presentations, she has cast herself in roles as varied as visual artist, composer, poet, photographer, filmmaker, electronics whiz, vocalist, and instrumentalist. O Superman launched Anderson’s recording career in 1980, rising to number two on the British pop charts and subsequently appearing on Big Science, the first of her seven albums on the Warner Brothers label.!Laurie Anderson’s 1982 debut album, Big Science, will return to vinyl for the first time in 30 years with a new red vinyl edition on Nonesuch Records. In the early 1980s, Laurie Anderson was already respected as a conceptual artist and composer, adept at employing gear both high-tech and homemade in her often violin-based pieces, and she was a familiar figure in the cross-pollinating, Lower Manhattan music-visual art-performance circles from which Philip Glass and David Byrne also emerged. While working on her now-legendary seven-hour performance art/theater piece United States, Part I–IV, she cut the spare ‘O Superman (For Massenet)’, an electronic-age update of 19th century French operatic composer Jules Massenet’s aria ‘O Souverain’, for the tiny New York City indie label 110 Records. In the UK, DJ John Peel picked up a copy of this very limited-edition 33⅓ RPM 7” and spun the eight-minute-plus track on BBC Radio 1. The exposure resulted in an unlikely #2 hit, lots of attention in the press, and a worldwide deal with Warner Bros. Records. We discuss her most recent works, as well as her 2015 film 'Heart Of A Dog', a favourite of Russell & Robert's! We learn of her artist residency at NASA and even debate whether animals can make art and learn about a car opera Laurie wrote involving actual cars honking their horns!Follow @LaurieAndersonOfficial on Instagram and her record label @NonesuchRecords for links to buy the limited edition red vinyl reissue of Big Science.TALK ART BOOK is OUT NOW! This week Stuart and Elizabeth are set to beguile you with stories about arguably the oddest pop record to ever make the charts - Laurie Anderson's 'O Superman' - and one of the most influential though little-known figures in British music, Ken Colyer. In between times they're arguing about just how hard it is to get to Tennessee and where exactly 'Sprech' and 'Gesang' go their separate ways. Only on Notable, surely. Episode 5. Gail Ann Dorsey Song Chronicles is proud to present its fifth episode, a conversation with singer-songwriter, bass player extraordinaire, and dear friend Gail Ann Dorsey. "I think... since I was a little kid... I wanted to get out of Philadelphia. I wanted to see the world. I wanted to do these things. Honestly, the odds were not in my favor, from my background, of me achieving what I've achieved, regardless of... talent and things. But. I think I've always [had] a good daydreaming, uh, imagination thing, you know, a law of attraction thing. You think you see it, you see it, you see it, and then... it comes." I first met Gail in the early '90s in London. I reached out to her to see if she wanted to write some songs and perhaps start a duo project. The band name was going to be South of Venus. She came over and we started a song called "Femme Fatale" and then ended up demoing some other songs together in the English countryside (with recording engineer Andrew Jackson, who I'd met recording at Astoria Studio, David Gilmour's houseboat on the Thames). We were hoping to write more songs and play some gigs when she got a call from Bryan Ferry. He wanted her to go on a European promotional tour for television. I was happy for her and thought our plans would simply be delayed; but soon after, Roland Orzabal, who I'd occasionally see in the coffee shop around the corner from me, wanted her to play with Tears For Fears, so it looked like our duo plans had bitten the dust. The next thing I knew, she'd put my name in the hat to play guitar on the Bryan Ferry TV tour and I got the gig. This was the beginning of a long and cherished friendship. Happy times with David Bowie Louise & Gail recording for "South of Venus" in London While traveling in Europe, we had dinner with filmmaker Pedro Almodovar and actors Rossy de Palma and Beverly D'Angelo in Madrid and went to Copenhagen, Paris, and other major cities. We made a dark Berlinesque video for Bryan of his cover of "I Put A Spell On You" and then back in London, I focused on songwriting and played some shows with an expanded line up and called it South of Venus. My hair was short then anyway, but then I dyed it blonde for a minute. Somewhere in that period of time Gail and I were called into the studio to sing backgrounds together on a Gang of Four album called Mall. I was already friends with Andy Gill. He was a beloved friend and he loved to cook and also knew all the best East End markets and wine bars. He produced some songs for me too that were never released. That was a snapshot in time, of changing busy lives going off into different directions. I was in London only another eighteen months before getting a gig opening for Swing Out Sister and decided at the end of it to stay in LA, ending my ten-year chapter as a Londoner and eventually ending up back on Lookout Mountain in Laurel Canyon. Gail, meanwhile, had done two tours with Tears For Fears, played on their records, and Roland Orzabal was mentoring her on her own solo record when she got the call from David Bowie. Over the years, we'd find time to meet up in LA, Woodstock & Nashville, and always we'd get right back into our groove. Gail was always fascinated with Hollywood and filmmaking, and in fact, had won a scholarship to Cal Arts and had attended film school well before her career as a signed recording artist (first for CBS and then Island) and her star side-woman singer-bassist-performer extraordinaire status with icons — none more famous than David Bowie, with whom she shared a lengthy residency from 1995 to Bowie's death in 2016. with David Bowie Gail sang lead vocals on live versions of "Under Pressure" and dueted with Bowie on other songs, including "The London Boys," "Aladdin Sane," "I Dig Everything," and a cover of Laurie Anderson's "O Superman." Behind the Scenes at the video shoot for Bryan Ferry's "I Put A Spell On You": Gail Ann Dorsey, Rossy de Palma and Louise Goffin

Today’s episode, the second in my Black History Month series, is a tribute to the extraordinary African American tenor Charles Holland (1909-1987) whose career spanned more than four decades. Early appearances as a vocalist with the band of Luther Henderson and the Hall Johnson Negro Choir led to his Hollywood film debut and to appearances on the Broadway stage. In 1949, frustrated with the lack of career opportunities for an African American tenor, Charles Holland departed for Europe, where he enjoyed a distinguished career. Late in his life he experienced an extraordinary career resurgence through an association with American conductor Dennis Russell Davies, which led to his belated Carnegie Hall solo recital debut in 1982 at the age of 73, as well as serving as the inspiration for Laurie Anderson’s surprise 1981 pop hit, O Superman. Musical excerpts include live and studio recordings over more than 40 years and a wide swath of genres. Countermelody is a new podcast devoted to the glories of the human voice raised in song. Pioneering artist Laurie Anderson traces the roots of performance art - the most daring and popular of contemporary art forms, which blurs the boundaries of art, theatre and dance. More and more artists are drawing on the live quality of performance in their work: the artist Marina Abramovic was present for three months in New York's Museum of Modern Art for visitors to lock eyes with, silent and motionless; this year's prestigious Venice Biennale Golden Lion prize was given to the performance artist Tino Sehgal; and the newest addition to the Tate are the Tate Tanks, dedicated to Performance art. But what is this transient medium and where has it come from? Laurie Anderson, famous for bringing her song O Superman to the British pop charts in the 1980s, focuses on this innovative and elusive art form, drawing out the qualities of ritual and gathering, pain and endurance. She turns to the earliest recordings of the Futurist artist, Marinetti's Zang Tumb Tumb, the actions of German artist Joseph Beuys; the influence of John Cage in contrast to the risk of Yoko Ono, the sexual politics of Vito Acconci, the confrontation of the Viennese Actionists or British artist Stuart Brisley's offal bath and the explosive shock of Chris Burden's Shoot.

He consults musician and sound artist Mark Fell, finds precedents in Wagner's operas, considers how a 16th-century choral work became a contemporary art installation, and celebrates the American performance artist Laurie Anderson who accidentally had a pop hit with her piece O Superman.

Over at Let's Take Five the guys are diving into the films of Terrence Malick. It's only fair that The Immortals do the same by reviewing his first film, Badlands. It is the story of two (very) young lovers who decide to flee across America after committing violent crimes. (I look forward to the episode of Ad Absurdum where they claim the murders in this film are illegal.) They also review the soothing sounds of Suzanne Vega, the stranger sounds of Laurie Anderson and the stupid sounds of Charmed. Get excited! Buckle up, because we haven't seen a rant quite like we got out of this week's guest. Chris Sims of Comics Alliance and War Rocket Ajax joins us to talk about the Superman v Doomsday fight and we find ourselves in the unlikely position of actually defending the film for once. To put it lightly, Chris didn't like it. We also go deep into the history of DC Comics and talk about the essential nature of Batman and Superman through the decades and how the film missed those characterizations by a mile. And, we explore an very surreal product placement tie-in that gives us a glimpse of an alternate DC film universe in which things aren't so dreary. Shock World Service 051 Long Distance Call by Jon Averill 01/02/2013 London, United Kingdom 1. Chromatics – The Telephone Call Some late night atmospherics to start us off from ‘Night Drive/Original Motion Picture Soundtrack IV' accompanied by some London rain I recorded. 2. How To Dress Well – When I Was In Trouble HTDW bring melancholy & starkness to the genre. Sounds more like the soundtrack to the walk home after breaking up with your girlfriend (suitable to this podcast) than champagne & gold chains. 3. Inc. – Swear Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis on Ketamine. 4. fLako – Mating Dance For me music is at it's best when it sounds unconventional, surprises you & demands your attention. fLako's afro-electronics ticks all the boxes. 5. Chosen Gospel Singers – Prayer For The Doomed This track was recorded at some time in the late 1950s & though a million miles away in process, to me has a lot in common with the previous tracks by How To Dress Well & Inc. 6. Daniel Bernard Roumain & Ryuichi Sakamoto – The Need To Be ‘The Need To Be' is taken from a compilation with the lengthy title of ‘DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid* – Sound Unbound Audio Companion: Excerpts & Allegories From The Sub Rosa Archives', which is to accompany his book of the same name. 7. Edgar Froese – Icarus Edgar Froese was a founding member of seminal German act Tangerine Dream. in 1978 Froese released his solo album ‘Ages' after major differences with his bandmates. According to Froese, it was recorded at a very emotional time in his career. 8. Dom Thomas – Gin & Tonic From the Finders Keepers & B-Music Crew; Dom Thomas blurs the lines between mixtape & original composition 9. Robert Ashley – Bruno Part 1 Robert Ashley is a contemporary American composer whose work traverses opera, experimental electronic music & theatrical works. ‘Bruno Part 1' is a hypnotic spoken word piece that is similar in tone to Laurie Anderson's ‘O Superman'. 10. Lee Hazlewood – Hands Ah, our old pal Lee Hazlewood is back – possibly the most featured artist ever on the World Service. Wouldn't you know it, poor old Lee is down on his luck & of course it's a woman that's the source of his troubles. Chin up son. 11. Hackman – Forgotten Notes This track is released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Records, named after North London's Brownswood Road, which my old house backs on to. A fact interesting only to me. 12. Vangelis – Multi Track Suggestion Van the man in rare disco mode, disco with his unique take on it as you would expect. This is from the 1980 album ‘See You Later' which sees him experimenting with electronic sounds for the first time. 2 years later he would take his electronic sounds to new heights & greater acclaim with the Blade Runner soundtrack. 13. Oneohtrix Point Never – Betrayed In The Octagon The Brooklyn-based musician Daniel Lopatin describes the track as "a stoned space epic about one really bad day in the life of an astronaut.", & that is good enough for me. 14. Robert Frost – Reluctance Another piece of spoken wordery by American poet Robert Frost 15. Julia Holter – Goddess Eyes (Echo Manor Version) Holter's music builds up from layers of patient, breathy voices & strings that seem to slowly sneak up on, rather than impose themselves on you. 16. Bill Fay – The Never Ending Happening Revealing itself behind some Arsenal fans (thanks lads) is ‘The Never Ending Happening', simply one of the most heartfelt & beautiful pieces of music i've heard in a long time. 17. Seti The First – Sugar To Sea Lion I've been a big fan of Seti The First for a while, only very recently discovering they were two Irish musicians; Kevin Murphy & Thomas Haugh. 18. F.J. McMahon – Sister Brother Released in 1969, following a stint serving in the U.S. Air Force. The album's outsider, lo-fi folk vibe pulls from his experiences in Vietnam & has become a top item among collectors & folk/psych lovers alike.
Shock World Service 048 Zero Hour by Neil Higgins 02/12/2012 London, United Kingdom 1. Claude Larson & his Computer Controlled Oscillators - Mountains & Meadows Like a lot of the early synthesizer artists this German producer veers between moments of lush magic & terrible cheesy nonsense, but this is a lovely warm wave of analog atmosphere to kick things off. 2. Tonto's Expanding Head Band - Cybernaut When these synth pioneers started making this music around 1969 there were virtually no reference points for what they were doing. This was just the music that the machines seemed to want to make/ 3. Mike Vickers - Surf Rider This slightly re-edited piece of proto-techno was recorded by a former member of Manfred Mann, and featured on a library music LP on the British KPM label. 4. Sid Bass - Moog Espana The first commercially successful synthesizer record was ‘Switched-On Bach' by Walter (later to become Wendy) Carlos in 1968. It was an attempt to show that the Moog synthesizer could replicate the full palette of sounds of an orchestra. Although it now feels like a full-on novelty record, it pretty much kick started the popularity of the Moog and launched the idea of using synthesizers in popular music. 5. Adrian Wagner - Where Are We Going A hypnotic but slightly bonkers epic from the UK Charisma label – home of Genesis and the Monty Python albums. 6. Cabaret Voltaire - Seconds Too Late Punk might have shattered much of the cosmic pretensions of 70s synthesizer music, but electronic music emerged darker and more experimental after the late 70s. 7. Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company - Ceres Motion This is just a small section of a 15-minute long minimalist journey. It's well worth soaking up the incredibly euphoric full-length version. 8. Kraftwerk - Antenna The Men Machine certainly weren't the first electronic group, but they were the first to sound like they were in complete control of the machines and to create their own unique sound – mysterious and unearthly but totally catchy. 9. Avida - Il Grillo e la Formica Some abrasive but romantic electro madness from early 80s Florence, Italy. This features the great Maurizio Dami. 10. David Bowie - Weeping Wall From the majestic B-side of ‘Low', Bowie's Eno-influenced homage to 1970s German electronic music. 11. Makers - Don't Challenge Me A wonderful, obscure synth-soul classic from a recent compilation ‘Personal Space: Electronic soul from 1974 to 1984'. That's all I know … 12. Suicide - Touch Me These New York electro-punk pioneers took electronic music down a completely different back alley – one littered with junkies, muggers and seedy glamour. 13. Cluster – Caramel Cluster was Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, two of the most legendary figures of 70s German experimental music (OK then, Krautrock – I was trying to avoid using that ridiculous label, but it's inescapable). This warped minimal groove brings to mind a bunch of ecstatic robots dancing in a forest clearing. Anyway, Dies ist verdammt gut… 14. E.M.A.K. - Filmmuzik The E.M.A.K. collective were part of an early 80s second wave of German electronic music. Futuristic techno, minimal, deep house – you can hear the germs of all these movements in this track. Although it is 1982 in Germany and these things don't exist yet, do they? 15. Laurie Anderson - Big Science Famous for taking ‘O Superman', an abstract 8-minute minimal experiment, to the top of the charts – that could happen in 1982. 16. Rhythim is Rhythim - Kaotic Harmony The next chapter is well known … when black kids in the urban decay of Detroit, USA, started to absorb some of these sci-fi sounds from Europe and fused them with the ghosts of soul and disco to create Techno. This is a glimpse of how powerful that fusion could be. 17. Cluster - Rosa Closing with another track from the ‘Zuckerzeit' LP. Deep, sad and otherworldly. Magic stuff.

I was playing some Boards of Canada recently & came across the song "In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country." I love the use of the vocoder in that tune. Being a sci-fi geek & an electronic music dork, it makes sense that I would like songs with vocoders. So I set out to find enough vocoder tunes for a mix. The result is "Vox Electronix". The vocoder is is an analysis/synthesis system, developed in the 1930's, that dramatically reduces the amount of information needed to store speech, from a complete recording to a series of numbers. Because much info was lost in the encoding & decoding process, the voice ended up sounding "dehumanized" or robot-like. Eventually changes were made by people like Wendy Carlos & Robert Moog, that made the vocoder a musical device, used most prominently by artists like Kraftwerk. The vocoder is used in many of the tracks in this mix, but I'm not exactly sure which ones are vocoder & which ones are auto-tune and which ones are just clever vocal manipulation. So don't everyone go crazy saying "hey that's not a flippin' vocoder!" I was just going for a certain sound, a certain feel. It was cool discovering tunes I'd either never heard of or forgotten about. Thanks to Judd at the Hypnos forum for recommending the tune by Tonto's Expanding Head Band & for reminding me about the track from the U2/Eno collaboration, Passengers. Also thanks to False mirror on the Hypnos forum for the heads up on the Robert Rich song. That's one of those that I think is some form of auto-tune versus a vocoder. The mix opens with a cool bit of audio which was recorded at Bell Labs in 1936. This was a fun mix to put together, discovering new tunes & revisiting old favorites(O Superman). I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
