South African guitar virtuoso Derek Gripper plays music originally meant for the 21 stringed lute-harp, the kora, on his 6-string Segovia-styled guitar and does it so well that the world's leading guitarists and kora players keep wondering how one even does that. His original music is informed by kora masters Toumani Diabaté, Salif Keita, Estonian minimalist composer Arvo Part, Brazilian guitarist Egberto Gismonti and German Baroque innovator, J.S. Bach. Watch out, because he's about to collaborate with the Iraqi-American oud player and composer Rahim Alhaj. (Ed. note: just wait until the 11 or 13-strings of the oud and those maqams make it to the 6-string guitar in Gripper's hands!) For now, Gripper plays another unbelievable arrangement of a Malian kora song, as well as an original song informed by the cascading style of kora music, plus some of the second cello suite by J.S. Bach, in-studio. - Caryn HavlikSupplemental Reading: The Beauty of Everyday Things, In Search of Lost TimeSet list: 1. Alla L'a Ke 2. Moss on the Mountain 3. J.S. SynopsisIn 1980, the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt emigrated from his Soviet-controlled homeland and settled in Austria. Since the 1960's, Pärt's increasingly spiritual and overtly religious music, imbued with mystical and contemplative rituals of the Russian Orthodox Church, did not sit well with the communist authorities, and Pärt found it increasing hard to live and work in Estonia. On today's date in 1980, at the Salzburg Festival in Austria, another Baltic artist, the Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer, gave the premiere performance of a new violin-piano arrangement of Part's Fratres, or Brothers—an instrumental work from 1977 that Pärt subsequently rescored for a variety of ensembles. In the version commissioned by the Salzburg Festival, the original harmonic material resides in the serene piano part, while the violin plays virtuosic variations above it. That serenity is the result of Pärt's effort to—as he put it— “learn to walk again as a composer.” He came up with a term, tintinnabulation, for the simplicity and directness of expression he sought.“Tintinnabulation is like this,” writes Pärt. “I am alone with silence. I work with very few elements… The three notes of the triad are like bells. And that is why I called it tintinnabulation.”Music Played in Today's ProgramArvo Pärt (b. 1935) Fratres Gidon Kremer, vn;Keith Jarrett, p. ECM 1275

Musical analysis and investigation on the meaning of a true masterpiece of the 20th century. ‘Fratres' represents a moment of dialogue between profound intellectualism and genuine emotionality, a rare case of Contemporary Art Music that speaks straightforwardly and without filters to the listener. Why is this piece so meaningful? How come it connects with us in such a deep, almost metaphysical way?The key is in the notes. I will offer an interpretation that takes from the score and integrates music with physics and geometry.Link to Fratres, by Arvo Part, for Piano and Violin, performed by G. Kremer and K. I'm a singer/songwriter living in the beautiful state of Maine. After all these years, I finally found my home — and her transcendent beauty and power never fails to inspire and nurture me. Music has always been a central part of my life — my mother said I sang before I spoke. Most of what I write is pure improvisation, and I write the music and lyrics on the fly, in a holistic manner. As such, my music is a diary, a means of therapy, and a window into my deepest thoughts and other worlds, and encompasses everything from pure folk to multitrack experimental or atmospheric music. At 15, my parents took me on a vacation that would change my life. We went to Michigan and "while we were there," we visited the Interlochen Academy for the Arts. I was transfixed by the immense talent around me and I never forgot that place. One day, I mentioned the school to my mother and she had me apply. I was accepted and never looked back. I went on to study music composition at Peabody Conservatory of Music (Now The Peabody Institute of Music of the Johns Hopkins University) and the Yale School of Music and studied under composers Jacob Druckman, Martin Bresnick, Poul Ruders, and Morris Moshe Cotel. I've written string quartets and orchestra pieces. But eventually, I realized that I was my own instrument and pursued my authentic musical voice. I will never forget the day I discovered the true power in and freedom I could experience when I connected deep into my soul and let it all out — the beautiful, the dark, the ecstatic, the bloody, the traumatic, the angry. It is one of the most wonderful experiences a human being can have. Influences include Arvo Part, Ani DiFranco, George Crumb, John Cage, Bjork, Sinead O'Connor, Loreena McKennitt, and a host of others.

For Part I of the interview, please see Previous Post With a shared passion for Music, Text & Story, we talk about the many hurdles young musicians face in getting the support they need to succeed. We talk about the impact of the pandemic and the lessons we've learned along the way. Most importantly we talk about the soul-deep need for community that is the human experience, and how we can use music to connect. New music powerhouse Dr. Lisa Neher (pronouns: she/her, last name pronounced "NEER") is an award-winning composer, mezzo-soprano, and actress on a mission to transform audiences through sound, story, and vulnerability. Described as a “maestro of beautifully wacky noises” (Oregon ArtsWatch) and a composer of “varied and imitable” vocal lines (Contemporary Classical), Lisa writes music inspired by female athleticism, the tender love of friends, the ambiguities of death, and the eerie mystery of deep ocean life. Praised as “a small woman with a very big voice” and “especially alive” (Oregon ArtsWatch), Lisa captivates audiences as a performer with her electrifying dramatic commitment and unforgettable vocal colors. Lisa's musical-theatrical fluency and passion for contemporary music have led to engagements such as Reciter for William Walton's Façade with the Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra, the world premiere of Space Station 189: A Micro-Opera for Instagram at New Music Gathering, the first staged version of Sun Songs: Three Micro-Operas by Augusta Read Thomas with the Center for New Music, the world premiere of Aaron Israel Levin's Fiumana, for mezzo-soprano singing while playing the bass drum, and the leading role of Jennifer in the world premiere of Rita Ueda's chamber opera One Thousand White Paper Cranes for Japan with the Singaporean ensemble Chamber Sounds. Her recent engagements include performances with Third Angle New Music, the Resonance Ensemble, Opera Theatre Oregon, Queer Opera, and the International Saxophone Symposium. Lisa is an active advocate for new music, frequently premiering new works as well as established masterworks of the last fifty years. She is the creator of the One Voice Project, a one-woman performance combining contemporary poetry and new musical works for unaccompanied voice chosen through a call for scores initiative. Lisa is in high demand as a concert soloist. Her credits include Duruflé's Requiem, Mozart's Requiem, Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, and Coronation Mass, Bach's Magnificat and Ascension Oratorio, and Arvo Part's Pässio, with groups such as the Central Iowa Symphony, the Grinnell Oratorio Singers, and the Chamber Singers of Iowa City. Her operatic credits include Dorabella in Così fan tutte with Iowa City Concert Opera, Dolores in The Gondoliers, Mrs. Malaprop in The Rivals, Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus and Annio in La clemenza di Tito with Martha-Ellen Tye Opera Theatre, the Student in the premiere of the chamber opera The Nightingale and the Rose by Li Kai Han Jeremiah with Helianthus Ensemble, and Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro with the Midwest Institute of Opera. Lisa was a Young Artist with Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre and the Vancouver International Song Institute. Lisa's compositions include solo and chamber music for instruments and vocal works in the operatic, song, and choral genres. Her particular passion for text and poetry has led to works such as her chamber operas Sense of Self, about a triathlete struggling with a breast cancer diagnosis and White Horizon, about a nineteenth-century Arctic expedition gone wrong. Lisa's major song cycle, No One Saves the Earth from Us But Us speaks the the urgency of the global climate crisis. Her commissioners include Third Angle New Music, Third Angle New Music, Opera Elect, Opera Theatre Oregon, Coe College Symphony Orchestra, Kirkwood Community College Choirs, the Glass City Singers, tenor Zach Finkelstein, pianist Michael Kirkendoll, and flutists Rose Bishop and Hal Ide. Tom Service lifts the lid on the music of the most popular living composer - Arvo Part. Nominated for 11 Grammy awards and revered by Bjork, P.J Harvey, and Radiohead, as well as classical musicians around the world, his seemingly simple and spiritual music is loved by millions. Born in Estonia in 1935 he did military service in the Soviet Army, worked as a radio producer, and wrote music for films, documentaries and animations, before creating his unique style of composition ‘tintinnabulation'. But what exactly is tintinnabulation? What do you get when you cross mathematics with love? And how can strict rules and discipline ultimately mean freedom? Our witnesses are violinist Viktoria Mullova who has recorded many of Part's seminal works, and theologian Dr Peter Bouteneff who has researched his music's connections with his Orthodox faith. Composer Anna Clyne joins conductor Devin Patrick Hughes on One Symphony. They discuss Anna's influences like Stravinsky, Steve Reich, and Arvo Part, composing based on poetry from Rumi to Shakespeare, along with silence in music, symphonic programming, repurposing material from others or yourself, and a way for a composer to be in the room with an orchestra from anywhere in the world! Anna Clyne is a GRAMMY-nominated composer of acoustic and electro-acoustic music.  Described as a “composer of uncommon gifts and unusual methods” by the New York Times and as “fearless” by NPR, Clyne is one of the most acclaimed and in-demand composers of her generation, connecting her music across art forms with innovative collaborations with choreographers, visual artists, filmmakers, and musicians.  Also the winner of the 2016 Hindemith Prize, Anna Clyne is currently the Associate composer for the Sottish Chamber Orchestra, and has held composer residencies with the Chicago Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and the National Orchestra of France.  Some of Anna Clyne's most amazing works that have been performed by the top orchestras, soloists and conductors around the world, include Dance for cello and orchestra, Night Ferry, Rewind, This midnight Hour, Prince of Clouds, The Seamstress, Sound and Fury and Within Her Arms.  Marin Alsop said it best by describing Anna's music as “always emotional and driven by her heart, and skillfully composed”. Thank you for joining us on One Symphony and thanks to Anna Clyne for sharing her music and insights. Thank you to all the incredible performers and record labels that made this episode possible! Cornelius Dufallo and Amy Kauffman played Tea Leaves from The Violin.  Dance was performed by Inbal Segev, and the London Philharmonic conducted by Marin Alsop. Masquerade was performed by the BBC Symphony conducted by Marion Alsop.  A Wonderful Day was performed by Anna Clyne and Willie Barbee from Bang on a Can All-Stars on the Cantaloupe Music label.   Rewind was performed by the BBC Symphony and Andre de Ridder. Stravinsky's Rite of Spring was performed by the London Symphony and Rafael Frübeck de Burgos.  Beethoven's Grosse Fuge was performed by the Takács Quartet.  Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra was played by the Hungarian State Symphony and Adám Fischer. Episode 13 features an incredible interview with Glen Soderholm. Glen is the pastor of Two Rivers Church in Guelph, Ontario. Two Rivers began as a single house church of what he calls “a collection of strays, orphans, and exiles,”  born from the idea of actually being neighbours with the people you live close to. He had so much to share about the Spiritual life, including his theology of Spirituality and the very practical things he does.As an accomplished musician, Glen spoke about the role of music in the Spiritual life and shared his love for some musicians that you may not have heard of. There are some links below to some of them. Check them out! There is a discussion of icons, which is fascinating, and I've included in these notes images of two mentioned in the episode.Glen has an amazing way of remembering quotes. Check out the quotes section below to read some of what Glen said. Some of what we talked about:Spirituality is being included in the Triune communion of God.What it means to listen to God? How do we listen in our inner life.Being limited by a cognitive approach to spirituality.Healthy spirituality begins to integrate all the senses.Icons - what are they and how are they helpful? How prayer life and spirituality changes over time.Having a prayer binderJournalingThe power of habit regardless of how we feel, but not driven by guilt. The idea of Jesus being our great high priest. That Jesus prays for us! The Spirit intercedes for us. Two thirds of the Trinity are already praying for us!It is not about persuading God. God is pursuing us and longs for a connection with us.Memorizing Scripture, in particular PsalmsThe role of music in Spirituality (see links below!)Quotes from Glen Soderholm in the Podcast“In this day and age, the last person we expect to be our neighbour, might be our actual next door neighbour.”“Spirituality is a gift that comes to us from God. God is the initiator in the spiritual life.”"Creation is the result of the overflow of God's life of love.”"Spirituality means talking to ourselves in healthy ways."A Prayer that he uses every day...I am the beloved child of God the Father. I am the beloved friend of God the Son. I am the beloved Temple of God the Holy Spirit. I am enfolded in the Three in One.Quotes from Others"Prayer is the gift of participating through the Spirit in the Son's communion with the Father.” - James Torrence"Prayer is listening to God tell you that you are the beloved child.” - Henri Nouwen“It is you that lights my lamp, the Lord, my God, lights my darkness.” - Psalm 18:28“Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance. I've mentioned many times that a mix often starts with a single track that interests me and takes off from there.  In the case of this classical mix, the track is "In Spe" by Arvo Part. I first heard the piece via YouTube & loved it right from the start.  As far as I can tell it has not been recorded for official release so the version in this mix is the performance I heard on YouTube.  You can find the original ten minute track here... In Spe, Arvo Pärt, Georgian Sinfonietta Creating a classical mix right now works nicely because I just bought the excellent new piece by John Luther Adams - Become Ocean.  It's basically an orchestral drone piece & it's beautiful. One of my favorite recordings of 2014, Atmos by A Winged Victory for the Sullen, makes two appearances in the mix.  It's a gorgeous record that fits perfectly in this mix.   A couple of other tracks that I was happy to squeeze into the mix are "Odi Et Amo" by Jóhann Jóhannsson and The Dublin Guitar Quartet's version of Philip Glass' "String Quartet No. 3 Mishima V."  I've always loved the Philip Glass soundtrack "Mishima" and this guitar quartet version is sublime. I guess this will be my last mix for 2014.  I'll start a new mix right off the bat in 2015.   I'd like to thank everyone who has been following this blog for almost 9 years now.  I've always said that I'd make mixes just for my own amusement, even if nobody else ever heard them.  But when other folks get some enjoyment out of them it makes it more fun and meaningful.  Plus it's just plain cool to have connected to people all over the world through these mixes.  Thanks! Enjoy & Happy New Year!
