On the 18th of October 2007 South African music icon Lucky Dube was murdered in a botched hijacking. The investigation into his murder would employ several interesting forensics tools to help bring his killers to justice. Also in this episode is a bonus interview with Dr Richard Shepherd one of the world's leading forensic pathologists, who has performed more than 23,000 autopsies. Dr Shepherd worked on some really high profile cases including The Hungerford Massacre, the death of Princess Diana, and the inquiry into serial killer Harold Shipman. In the fifth episode of Gallo Vault Sessions, we follow the ways South African music has proliferated across the international stage, and trace a few Gallo-affiliated artists as they and their music traversed the globe! We charter a flight with the music of Lucky Dube, Ray Phiri, Solomon Linda, and more…and explore both the highs and lows of what it means for South African music and artists to contend with international audiences and global success. We also tease out different moments of both cultural exploitation and cultural appreciation in this landscape as we begin to wrap up the first season of the Gallo Vault Sessions podcast. We consider Paul Simon's Graceland, sync deals with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and even learn about champeta sound system culture on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. We return to our conversations with Bra Lulu Masilela from The Boyoyo Boys & Mam Hilda Tloubatla, from The Mahotella Queens — both of whom we met in our previous episode, as well as former Gallo Managing Directors Antos Stella and Ivor Haarburger, and also meet two new voices, Edna Martinez, a DJ from Colombia, and the incredibly prolific composer, producer and performer, Don Laka! I was born in Liberia in 1990 during that bloody civil war. The war took so many of our people. My parents named me Abraham Mellish at birth, however my grandfather called me by the name of his father, Zondo. The meaning is "the man who cannot be captured." He was an honorable and noble man of the Bassa tribe. When I arrived on Turtle Island at the age of fifteen after the second war, it is here that music found me. I didn't understand what the medicine of music was going to bring to my life. Playing music helped me to express my heart's yearning, feeling alone and in a foreign place, as a mismatch of my expression to be me. At nineteen I started writing music in the closet because it wasn't permitted in my house and I was doing open mics in Dallas, Texas. That introduced me to community and a way for me to process the world. I felt a sense of belonging and an assurance of the usefulness of my art, I witnessed tears of grief and expressions of joy that spoke to the depths of my soul. Although my Spirit remained on the run from the steady hissing of the shadow of an Ak47, when I grabbed that guitar it quieted, I became hopeful and jubilant within myself. After surviving two civil wars in my homeland of Liberia, I found refuge in music. Influenced by Tracy Chapman, Lucky Dube, Bob Dylan, Seu Jorge and Fela Kuti. I Zondo, developed my own sound. Combining traditional Folk, Funk, and Blues with an African pulse. I use bass notes juxtaposed with intricate finger picking to establish a rhythm steeped in Liberian roots. My songs create an atmosphere of community, telling the story of my heritage with an inspirational message of oneness and peace. Greetings Glocal Citizens! We're back in Nairobi this week and we're talking the business of being a creative in Africa. Moses Mbasu, better known as Buddha Blaze is the Talent Manager at BLAZE Kenya and Creative Director at Spark Africa Limited a multimedia youth oriented agency based in Nairobi, Kenya. He got his start as a music blogger and all around "connector" to events, music, hip-hop, Africa, diaspora, technology, social networking, fashion, media, investment, and progressive politics. Blaze was the editor of East Africa’s first entertainment magazine PHAT! - the first magazine of its kind in Kenya. He gained Pan-African recognition as the Artist and Repertoire Manager at Coke Studio Africa (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCABZrkBsGdCRGpibJOkKKmw), a music production TV series with live performances by African artists. Blaze's career works have provided a platform for young and budding African artists to express themselves and connect with fans, documenting the emergence of an entertainment industry in Kenya. In his time as editor of PHAT! Magazine, Blaze interviewed numerous entertainers namely Suzanna Owiyo, Yvonne Chakachaka, Shaggy, Nameless, Redsan, Eric Wainaina, Bamboo, Alpha Blondy, the late Lucky Dube, Mandoza, Lebo Mathhhhosa and Brenda Fassie. Blaze led campaigns through writing to have radio stations start playing Kenyan music instead of only playing international music changing the way radio looks at Kenyan music. Following his experience spearheading Safaricom's 2002 Star Search, in 2003 he led the first group of Kenyan artists to the KORA All African Music Awards in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2004 he was involved in World Bank anti-piracy project Action for Music and through working with WAPI, Blaze designed and managed a global artists movement for British Council called WAPI which had reach in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and Malawi. Through WAPI, Blaze has inspired the careers of many artists such as Sauti Sol, Big Mic, Point Blank, Muthoni the Drummer Queen and Liz Ogumbo. Blaze was truly a treat to host. Reggae in Africa is alive and well with Rootspence and the Groovemakers blazing the fire from Mozambique. Rootspence joins us to give a first-hand account of the current reggae climate from Malawi to Mozambique. He breaks down some of the difficulties with reggae sprouting in former Portuguese colonies versus English-speaking areas of the continent. Roots Reggae in Africa was championed by Bob Marley and the Wailers in the 1970s. Rootspence was greatly influenced by the music his Reggae-loving parents played around the house. He learned and imitated the sounds and moves of Marley, also crediting Lucky Dube, Burning Spear, and Peter Tosh as sources of inspiration. Helio Sixpence, better known as Rootspence, is an emerging artist, singer, and songwriter born in Malawi and based in Mozambique. The talented musician is quickly making waves in the scene with his unparalleled sound and style. Through his emotion-filled vocal performances, Rootspence radiates raw emotion through explosive instrumentation. Inspired by his life experiences, Rootspence strives to push the envelope with his sound to make a well-rounded, dynamic style that will resonate with listeners. Moreover, he seeks to create music that can teach, advise, cheer, inspire, and heal souls. 2020 WAM (We Are Music) Award Nominee and seven times Reverb Nation Featured Artist, the artist aims to connect intimately through his lyricism and sound with listeners around the world. Rootspence will have listeners engulfed in the musical world he creates with his no-frills approach and realness. Rootspence is an artist to watch as he is set to cement himself in the music industry for years to come.
