Terry Mason has only been on a cruise once in her life, invited by a friend who was booked as a performer on the ship. The performers on this ship didn't have luxury accommodations, but it was a wonderful adventure that involved a short plane ride, boarding a second ship, and sharing Greek Easter dinner with the Greek crew. It's a story of seeing others, and being seen — and has a twist at the end that ended up with Terry almost being arrested! The meditation and the ending all tied in with being seen, and inviting everyone to really see one another, knowing that everyone we meet has a full life and existence, and deserves to be seen. Our own Terry Mason shared her personal history of creating community in her home, first at her family home growing up, and then with her husband, Paul Chepikian, when her Dad moved in with them. Reimagining the holidays was necessary then, and it is necessary now. What will we do differently to be together for the upcoming holiday season, as we will be unable to be together physically due to measures for safety against Covid 19? How can we reimagine traditions at this tender time? Check the calendar of Events at www.peacealliance.org - join us at the next Hope Story Circle and share your emerging stories!
Join your host Hermene Hartman for this special report , 5- part Zoom series, Covid While Black in partnership with Robert R. McCormick Foundation. We'll be discussing mental health, talking to survivors of the corona virus, in addition to featuring Black doctors & nurses, Black entrepreneurs, and the much ignored last responders/deathcare workers- funeral directors. In this episode your host Hermene Hartman speaks with Dr.Terry Mason, Peridontist Dr. Yetta McCullom, Dr.Kyra D. Barnes, D.D.S., & Nurse Practitioner Wanda Matthews. Dr.Terry Mason details the origins of the corona virus/covid 19 and why it affects African Americans in higher numbers than other communities. He breaks down the chemical cortisol and how it wrecks havoc on the human body in turn contributing to the many factors associated with the "lack" in black & brown commmunities as it relates to health disparities. Ultimately, Dr. Mason says there is nothing inherent about being black that predisposes black people to covid 19. In actuality it's where Black people live, work, & play that creates the divide. Nurse practitioner, Wanda Matthews, openly discusses how she, her husband, and 17 year old child contracted covid 19 and how each of them had entirely different symptoms with her husband suffering the worst. Dr.Kyra Barnes sheds light on the fact that dentists have some of the strongest and safest protocols that protects against infectious diseases. She notes that adpating her practice to this new complicated norm has been challenging. In order to insure the safety of her patients and dental team it calledl for a large investment in additional PPE, supplies, and equipment. Dr. Yetta McCullom in her personal life lives by the hashtag #notseenuntilthevaccine . However, during the protests, Dr. McCullom's practice was vandalized by looters. Fortunately they were able to recover quickly due to the help of the community. It's important to her to continue to support the BLM movement and the mission of equality. Recently, Dr. Terry Mason, former Commissioner of Public Health for the City of Chicago, was a guest on CROE-TV discussing how we can stay healthy during the coronavirus pandemic. He shared four key steps that should implemented for good health during our current crises and at any time: 1. Manage Stress When our stress is high, our the stress hormone cortisol is released into the blood stream. Cortisol increases our heart rate, blood pressure, constricts our blood vessels and increases blood glucose levels. These health impacts over an extended period of time can lead to significant health issues like heart disease, heart attacks, stroke and diabetes. 2. Get Proper Sleep Poor sleep can increase inflammation, blood pressure, insulin resistance, cortisol, weight gain, and cardiovascular disease, as well as decrease blood sugar regulation. Less than five hours sleep per night on a regular basis is associated with higher mortality, and having less than seven hours sleep for three nights in a row has the same effect on the body as missing one full night of sleep. 3. Drink Water All of the organs, tissues and cells in our bodies require water for proper functioning. But remember you do not just have to jug a gallon size bottle of water, if we are eating fresh fruits and vegetables, they too contain water. Water is also good for bowel motility, joint health (the cushioning agent of joints and discs of the spine – consists of about 80 percent water),hair and skin. 4. Eat Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Dr. Mason advises us to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those deeply colored. These foods have antioxidants which protects our blood vessels. It is essential that we intake nutrients and minerals from their original sources (fruit and vegetables) so that they are more likely to be absorbed and used by the body Dr. Mason's interview can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ccWQOrKV4E. Dr. Mason continues to be a leading expert in health and wellness and was most recently the chief operating officer for the Cook County Department of Pubic Health. COO of Illinois’ Cook County Department of Public Health, Dr. Terry Mason, sits down with me to explain what our bodies need. Comparing our bodies to machines that need care and upkeep, just like with a car, Dr. Mason explains that you need to give it the right inputs for it to run well. In 2004, Mason was having a heart attack while on a tread mill and was told to go on medicine. Getting only four hours of nutritional education in medical school, Dr. Mason decided to research what he could do instead of meds and found his way to a whole-food, plant-based diet. He subsequently lost almost 50 pounds. Dr. Mason’s conviction is palpable. He explains that the average person eats 57 pounds of chicken and 100 pounds of meat a year on the standard American diet (many say over 200 pounds if fish is included). It is no wonder that many Americans are unhealthy and suffering. For some plant-based recipe options, click here. As if this isn't enough, we also talk about the nitty-gritty: POOP! Think you are healthy? Listen in to find out and to learn about...POOP! For more information, visit ElysabethAlfano.com .
