In this episode, host, Christopher Michaelson, intermixes his commentary with a recording of a panel discussion taken during an in-person event at the Guthrie Theater in May 2022. The special event titled, A Raisin in the Sun: Panel Discussion and Performance, was an experiential opportunity aimed at helping shape the role of business in cultivating racial justice and social equity in the Twin Cities community. Esteemed panelists included Austene Van, director of A Raisin in the Sun, founder of the New Dawn Theater Company, and producing artistic director of the Yellow Tree Theater; Dr. Yohuru Williams, founding director of the Racial Justice Initiative at the University of St. Thomas; and panel moderator, Tina Burnside, cofounder and curator of the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery (MAAHMG).A Raisin in the Sun overview:"What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?"In 1951, poet Langston Hughes posed these questions, and Lorraine Hansberry answered with a theatrical masterpiece that broke down racial barriers both on and off stage. The play follows the three-generation Younger family as they grapple with different definitions of the American dream and how to achieve it. When the matriarch, Lena, buys a home in an all-white neighborhood, the Youngers are greeted by thinly veiled racism and financial pitfalls that threaten to pull the family apart and push their dream out of reach. With special thanks to the generous sponsors for the evenings' events: Guthrie Theater, Robins Kaplan, Ryan Companies, SPS Commerce, Sunrise Banks, Target, US Bank, Verizon, the Racial Justice Initiative, and the Melrose & The Toro Company Center for Principled Leadership.

SEEN (by one of us): May 18, 2022 A Raisin in the Sun by LORRAINE HANSBERRY directed by AUSTENE VAN McGuire Proscenium Stage “What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” In 1951, poet Langston Hughes posed these questions, and Lorraine Hansberry answered with a theatrical masterpiece that broke down racial barriers both on and off the stage. The play follows the three-generation Younger family as they grapple with different definitions of the American dream and how to achieve it. When the matriarch, Lena, buys a home in an all-white neighborhood, the Youngers are greeted by thinly veiled racism and financial pitfalls that threaten to pull the family apart and push their dreams out of reach. Three things to know Inspired by Lorraine Hansberry's own family's experience in Chicago in the 1930s, A Raisin in the Sun opened on Broadway in 1959 and, for the first time, hailed an all-Black principal cast, a Black playwright and a Black director. The play was nominated for four Tony Awards, and Hansberry was the first Black woman to be produced on Broadway. Director Austene Van is an acclaimed Twin Cities theater professional, co-founder of New Dawn Theatre Company and Producing Artistic Director at Yellow Tree Theatre. She was last seen on the Guthrie stage playing Truvy in our 2019 production of Steel Magnolias.

Get inspired to set up your own Norooz/Nowruz Sofreh Haft Seen this year! Co-hosts Bita and Beata give an overview of the Persian New Year and encourage everyone to set up the traditional place setting with 7 symbolic items (or with whatever items you can get your hands on!) Highlights of Norooz (also spelled Nowruz) It is the biggest Persian holiday and celebrated by other nationalities and countries as well It means new day and a time of renewal and rebirth Celebrated at the Spring Equinox for 13 days Youngers pay respect to elders, and in exchange the elders give them money or “Aid-e” Ends with “Sezdeh Bedar” - get out of the house on the 13th day for a picnic. Learn more about Norooz in the Modern Persian Food podcast 3-part series episodes 22, 23, and 24 (see links below). The sofreh Haft Seen is a special place setting with 7 symbolic items starting with the Farsi letter which has the sound of “s” Items on the Haft-seen place setting or sofreh can include: Seeb - apple, representing health Seer - garlic, representing good health Somagh - sumac, the color of sunrise Sombol - fragrant flower, the Hyacinth flower Serkeh - vinegar, patience and aging Sabzeh - the Persian grass or sprouted legumes/lentils, representing growth and renewal Senjed - dried jujube, representing love Samanou - wheat germ pudding, representing patience, power, and bravery Sekeh - coins; representing prosperity Shirini - sweets Additional, optional items often found on a haft-seen setting Mirror Candles Termeh or beautiful old fabric Colored, decorated eggs Fish - live or a representation of them Fresh flowers of any form A special book of poetry or a holy book (tradition being that at the moment of Norooz, clean, new bills are taken from the holy book by elders and gifted to youngers) Framed photos to commemorate deceased family members Setting up a haft-seen can take different forms. There is a lot of flexibility with how one chooses to set it up. It can be big or small. It can even be portable! Beata's strategy is to start out with a mirror and then build the haft seen from there. Often Beata will start out with a larger haftseen set up on a table then make it smaller on the days following Norooz. A tray is a clever addition which can be used to move the table setting up if needed, or to even transport it to another place or home altogether. We encourage you to set up your own haft-seen! Un nuevo tema de los fantásticos The Youngers abre hoy para dejar paso a dos excelentes versiones de country de los 90 en el nuevo volumen 2 de los American Aquarium. Kieran Ridge y sus Moonrakers tocan americana acústica desde Boston (por eso suenan como irlandeses), cercana a los tejanos Jamestown Revival que hacen una mezcla de country sureño, americana y música western. Otra de las grandes novedades es por fin ya el disco de John Mellencamp, con colaboraciones de Bruce Springsteen, que ofrece su versión radical de la cultura estadounidense que evoca tiempos más oscuros antes de que naciera el compositor que tiene ya 70 años. Los Lumineers finalmente presentan un disco flojillo (al menos para nosotros) aunque para no romper la atmósfera suave, recuperamos de ayer a Malcolm Holcombe con sus piezas casi acústicas. Y el final newmexicano de Dean Owens también le pega de sobra al ambiente plomizo que parece haberse quedado.The Youngers, Cat EyesAmerican Aquarium, That Ain't My TruckAmerican Aquarium, Money in the BankKieran Ridge & the Moonrakers, The Last One to KnowKieran Ridge & the Moonrakers, Straight to the Heart of LoveJamestown Revival, These DaysJamestown Revival, Slow It DownJohn Mellencamp, Did You Say Such A ThingJohn Mellencamp, Lie To MeThe Lumineers, BirthdayThe Lumineers, RepriseMalcolm Holcombe, Crazy Man BluesMalcolm Holcombe, Good IntentionsDean Owens, New Mexicop { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 115%; background: transparent }

Small Potatoes is setting trends this week. We're replacing lanyards with over-sized key rings, cutting boards with our bare hands, and Costco traffic laws with utter chaos. We want smaller phones, bigger remotes, and to simply live forever. So take a load off, grab the nearest pair of scissors, and kill some time like you're watching a movie with commercials.
The Youngers, SparkleLucinda Williams, I Won't Back DownLucinda Williams w Margo Price, Changed The LocksSue Foley, Hurricane GirlSarah Shook & the Disarmers, No MistakesSarah Shook & the Disarmers, Talkin' to MyselfKris Rodgers and the Dirty Gems, I Can Still Feel ItKris Rodgers and the Dirty Gems, I'm Your ManGraham Brown, HauntedJon Wolfe, Lost Cause Like MeThe Southern Locomotive Band, ContrabandF. “BREWS, POURS And SIPS” From AmericaOnCoffee sharing eventful happenings
We open with the “Harlem Renaissance”, the commercial venturing of Black stage plays. The Play: The setting takes place in Harlem in the ‘50s, Simply Heavenly follows Jess Simple as he tries to raise enough money for a divorce so he can marry his new love and eloquently captures the color, humor and poetry of that time and place. The musical is based on Hughes' novel Simple Takes A Wife and other Simple stories. Runtime: 20 August – 12 October, 1957 (Source: Masterworks Broadway) blackworkbroadway.com Langston Hughes' Simply Heavenly featuring Anna English, “Look for the Morning Star” and Melvin Stewart singing “the Flying Saucer Monologue” and the “Gate Keeper of my Castle” At the beginning of the play, Walter and Beneatha's father has recently died, and Mama (Lena) is waiting for a life insurance check for $10,000. Walter has a sense of entitlement to the money, but Mama has religious objections to alcohol and Beneatha has to remind him it is Mama's call how to spend it. Eventually, Mama puts some of the money down on a new house, choosing an all-white neighborhood over a black one for the practical reason that it happens to be much cheaper. Later she relents and gives the rest of the money to Walter to invest with the provision that he reserve $3,000 for Beneatha's education. Walter passes the money on to Willy's naive sidekick Bobo, who gives it to Willy, who absconds with it, depriving Walter and Beneatha of their dreams, though not the Youngers of their new home. Meanwhile, Karl Lindner, a white representative of the neighborhood they plan to move to, makes a generous offer to buy them out. He wishes to avoid neighborhood tensions over the interracial population, which to the three women's horror Walter prepares to accept as a solution to their financial setback. Lena says that while money was something they try to work for, they should never take it if it was a person's way of telling them they weren't fit to walk the same earth as they. And, Beneatha's character and direction in life are being defined for us by two different men: Beneatha's wealthy and educated boyfriend George Murchison, and Joseph Asagai. Neither man is actively involved in the Youngers' financial ups and downs. George represents the “fully assimilated black man” who denies his African heritage with a “smarter than thou” attitude, which Beneatha finds disgusting, while dismissively mocking Walter's lack of money and education. Joseph patiently teaches Beneatha about her African heritage; he gives her thoughtfully useful gifts from Africa while pointing out she is unwittingly assimilating herself into white ways. She straightens her hair, for example, which he characterizes as “mutilation.” When Beneatha becomes distraught at the loss of the money, she is upbraided by Joseph for her materialism. She eventually accepts his point of view that things will get better with a lot of effort, along with his proposal of marriage and his invitation to move with him to Nigeria to practice medicine. Walter is oblivious to the stark contrast between George and Joseph: his pursuit of wealth can be attained only by liberating himself from Joseph's culture, to which he attributes his poverty, and by rising to George's level, wherein he sees his salvation. Walter redeems himself and black pride at the end by changing his mind and not accepting the buyout offer, stating that the family is proud of who they are and will try to be good neighbors. The play closes with the family leaving for their new home but uncertain future. Justin has met another interesting character in the Roblox dev space. He's released about 100 games, has interned at Roblox itself and has over a million monthly players on his own games. He's been checking out Slider and giving Justin some advice—primarily to make the game less linear. Mark has also been inspired by a game dev on YouTube gotten some useful takeaways from him. His name is "The Cherno" and uses livestreams as a way to create graphics engine development screencasts for his audience. He records very long livestreams, gets what he wants to screencast figured out and then does them live in just a couple or usually in a single take! The quality of his screencasts dropped when he started doing this, but the recent ones are very good. Justin also went on Startups for the Rest of Us for an interview, Starlink has some very eyebrow-raising clauses in its TOS and the NTD is getting strong. This podcast is about making the most of the collective gap year that we’re all living through right now. It's a topic that applies to anyone, of any age, but our focus is on those in midlife and older. So today, to kick off 2021, Debbie talks to the perfect guest, Ashton Applewhite. Ashton is an author, speaker and activist on the topic of ageism, which can be defined as discrimination on the basis of age (no matter how old or how young you are). She's been called a pro-aging radical and the "Malcolm Gladwell of ageism." She and Debbie really get into it in this wide-ranging conversation with Ashton poking and prodding at some of Debbie's assumptions. The topic of ageism (or any -ism) brings up a lot of emotion. Fear is generally at the top of the list so they talk about the fear of getting old and what that means in America. They talk about the value of human lives and why older people are often seen as less valuable or even invisible. And they delve into how the pandemic has revealed the deep well of ageism in our society. They also talk about the irony of being ageist yourself, of unconsciously accepting the notion that old is ugly. (Debbie is 69 and Ashton is 68.) Ashton reminds us that studies like the U-Curve of Happiness show older people are happier. They end the conversation with Ashton offering one thing you can do to combat ageism: become aware of when you’re using the word “old” as a negative vs. “young” as a positive. Think about that while you're listening to this provocative episode. TRANSCRIPT FOR EP 23:Welcome to Woman Leadership show. I'm Janet and in this episode, I will be sharing with you how I keep my sanity as working mum Working in a senior position and leading teams would require a lot of investment of time in addition to night and morning calls. When I was working in the bank, there were periods when I travelled almost 50% of the month for about 2 years to work on various Human Resources projects. I would be away from family at leasy 5 days at one time and had to have facetime at night for few minutes before I would have to prepare my work for next day's meetings or training. Feeling lonely at times when I travelled on business trip and during longer periods the hotel was like my second home. Was there a better option and so I moved to another role which required no travelling for few years while I could focus on my eldest son who are taking PSLE . Youngers ones were moving to upper primary which requires more support in their studies. So being in Singapore did got me time to be there for them though I was working long hours and during weekends. I take things easy such as there are some thing that I do not force myself that they have to score perfect marks. If they did not do well in any subject, I will see if there are resources to support. I do not give myself too much pressure as long we and children do our best. I enjoyed travelling but there would be at stages where I would have to sacrifice to be more grounded with the children when they need me. Now I am taking career break to pause and reflect what is next step for me and for my family now my late mum has just passed away. Do I want to continue my career in corporate or start to look into starting a digital business and flexible options so I can be with my teenager children. I will schedule make it a point to manage my time around family , close friends, health , managing finances and time that I spent will work towards in achieving my goals , to have a consistent time scheduled set aside for family and couple outings. I realized if you do not set aside fixed time regularly, you will be swamped with things that you think are important and take up a lot of your time letting you think misunderstand that you have been very busy which could be good but later on realized it was like firefighting not really sure what we are all busy with at the end of the day, week and months and if those time spent will add value to what we want for ourselves, family , goals, career, business and our dreams. Ilearnt to assess what we do benefit us whether for personal growth, for family, work towards our goals and dreams whether is for work and business. We want our time spent to be productive and eventful as everyone has the same number of 24 hours and what we do with every minute counts and that differentiate us from others looking at what we have achieved in life. I use the same principle in managing my various roles and manage my time in prioritizing what are important for me. Do not feel guilty about not being there for the children, mum or husband. It is a choice made with the support and discussion with husband what works or everyone. Should anyone is not happy, we will trash it out and see if there is any changes needed ot tweak to ensure everyone is well supported. There is no wrong or right decision, it depends on what we want to achieve and what is important to us. What is our values and our priorities may change over time such as how it has changed for me over the years in my career and having different stages of growing up children. I hope that through my sharing, it draws inspiration and personal reflection for you. I believe every woman can be a leader in your own way. I look forward to seeing you in my next episode where I will be sharing with you tips and ways to realize your full potential as a leader on Woman Leadership.

This week on StoryWeb: Lorraine Hansberry’s play “A Raisin in the Sun.” Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 play, A Raisin in the Sun, was a groundbreaking play in so many ways. Hansberry was the first African American woman to write a Broadway play, and the New York Drama Critics' Circle named it the best play of 1959. The play tells the story of an ordinary African American family, warts and all, and addresses an all-too-common challenge faced by black families in the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s – housing discrimination. In the play, the Younger family lives in a cold water flat on the south side of Chicago. Lena Younger – the widowed matriarch of the family, known as Mama – has had a lifelong dream of buying a home of her own. When her husband dies, she decides to use part of the life insurance money as a down payment on a house in Clybourne Park, an all-white neighborhood. Though there are other plot lines involving her daughter, Beneatha, her son, Walter, and her daughter-in-law, Ruth, the major focus of the play is Mama’s decision to buy the house and the pushback the family gets from white residents in what is to be the Youngers’ new neighborhood. In a scene that might seem a bit heavy-handed but was unfortunately all too real, a Mr. Lindner – a white man – is sent as the representative of the Clybourne Park Improvement Association. On behalf of the neighborhood’s other white residents, he offers to buy the house from the Youngers at a premium – more than what the house is worth. In sweet-talking words, he says that “most of the trouble in the world . . . exists because people don’t just sit down and talk to each other . . . that we don’t try hard enough in this world to understand the other fellow’s problem. The other guy’s point of view.” After that preamble, he finally gets to the point: Well – you see our community is made up of people who’ve worked hard as the dickens for years to build up that little community. They’re not rich and fancy people; just hard-working, honest people who don’t really have much but those little homes and a dream of the kind of community they want to raise their children in. . . . [T]he overwhelming majority of our people out there feels that people get along better, take more of a common interest in the life of the community, when they share a common background. I want you to believe me when I tell you that race prejudice simply doesn’t enter into it. It is a matter of the people of Clybourne Park believing, rightly or wrongly, that for the happiness of all concerned that our Negro families are happier when they live in their own communities. When the Younger family balks at his offer to buy the house from them, he says, “What do you think you are going to gain by moving into a neighborhood where you just aren’t wanted? . . . People can get awful worked up when they feel that their whole way of life and everything they’ve worked for is threatened.” A Raisin in the Sun has been popular since it was first produced on Broadway in 1959, and it is a perennial favorite in high school English classes. What many people do not know, however, is that the play is based in part on Hansberry’s own family history. In 1935, her parents, Carl and Nannie Hansberry, bought a house in the all-white Washington Park neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Anna Lee, a white homeowner in the neighborhood, sued the Hansberrys on the grounds that a restrictive covenant prohibited blacks from buying property in the neighborhood. The case – Hansberry v. Lee – ultimately went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Though the Court’s 1940 finding hinged on a technicality and not on the issue of whether racially based restrictive covenants were legal or constitutional, the decision nevertheless paved the way for making such covenants illegal. Lorraine Hansberry herself seems to have had mixed feelings about the court case and her father’s fight for housing fairness. In a letter to the editor of The New York Times, she said, My father was typical of a generation of Negroes who believed that the “American way” could successfully be made to work to democratize the United States. Thus, twenty-five years ago, he spent a small personal fortune, his considerable talents, and many years of his life fighting, in association with NAACP attorneys, Chicago’s “restrictive covenants” in one of this nation’s ugliest ghettos. That fight also required our family to occupy disputed property in a hellishly hostile “white neighborhood” in which literally howling mobs surrounded our house. . . . My memories of this “correct” way of fighting white supremacy in America include being spat at, cursed and pummeled in the daily trek to and from school. And I also remember my desperate and courageous mother, patrolling our household all night with a loaded German Luger, doggedly guarding her four children, while my father fought the respectable part of the battle in the Washington court. So powerful and hard-hitting was Hansberry’s play in its depiction of the insidious practice of racially based housing discrimination that the FBI tracked Hansberry’s activities – both before and after the play’s Broadway production. Learn more at F.B. Eyes Digital Archive. Curious about the play’s title? It comes from Langston Hughes’s famous poem “Harlem,” which opens with the lines: “What happens to a dream deferred? / Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” And that raises the question: will the Younger family accept the substantial amount of cash Mr. Lindner offers – or will they move into Clybourne Park anyway, risking possible violence from their new neighbors? Indeed, the play refers to another black family whose new home in a white neighborhood was bombed in an attempt to scare them away. With the promise of more money on one hand and in the face of possible violence on the other, what will the Youngers do? You’ll have to read the play or – better yet – watch the original film adaptation to see what the Youngers ultimately decide to do. Do they achieve their dream or does it continue to dry up like a raisin in the sun? The original film stars Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee, both of whom starred in the Broadway production as well. It doesn’t get much better than that! One need not have ever seen Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 play A Raisin in the Sun to appreciate the setup - or laugh at the jokes - in Bruce Norris’s brilliant 2012 Pulitzer-and-Tony-winning comedy-drama "Clybourne Park." Taking place immediately following the events of the original, Clybourne - running through January 25 at 6th Street Playhouse - is a smart, insightful, baldy frank and frequently hilarious examination of the racial divide in America. Hansberry’s play - which gave many theater-going white folks their first glimpses into the lives of Africa-American families - takes place in a poor, Southside neighborhood of Chicago in 1959, where the African-American Younger family is preparing to move to a house they’ve just purchased in the all-white neighborhood of Clybourne Park. At the end of that play, Karl - a nervous, white representative of Clybourne Park - visits the Youngers, attempting to bully, cajole or outright bribe them into selling the house back - something they ultimately refuse to do. In "Clybourne Park," directed with expert comic timing, gripping intensity and escalating drama by Carl Jordan, the action now takes place in the Clybourne Park house the Youngers have purchased. The place is half-empty, its contents mostly packed into cardboard boxes standing here and there on the nicely detailed set by Ronald Krempetz, as its white residents Bev and Russ prepare to move out of the area. When Karl, the white guy from Raisin in the Sun, appears - having just come from failing to bribe the Youngers - Russ stubbornly digs in his heels at the suggestion he should assist the neighborhood in keeping the black family out. It turns out Russ has some grudges against his neighbors, in part for the way they treated his son after the Korean War. The escalating conflict, which pulls in the young minister Jim and Karl’s deaf, very-pregnant wife Betsy, takes place in the presence of Russ and Bev’s longsuffering black housecleaner Lena and her husband Albert, who gradually insert their own opinions about the callous racism they are witnessing. Decisions are made. Words are exchanged. Lives are changed. Then, in the play’s boldest move, the story suddenly leaps fifty years ahead. In Act 2, the Younger’s home is now a condemned wreck covered in graffiti, the property about to be demolished following years of drug-enhanced neglect in the once depressed, all-black but now mixed-race and rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. The same, supremely strong flexible cast appears again, this time as contemporary characters, gathering at the house to discuss the details of what kind of structure can be built on the same spot. IT being a historically valuable neighborhood, there are rules how big, and how tacky, the new owners are allowed to make any new building. The witty dialogue is riveting, raw, and real, as the marvelous cast shows us the prejudices still lurking below the surface, demonstrating with humor and candid transparency that the more things change, the more they remain the same. "Clybourne Park" runs Thursday–Sunday through Jan. 25 at 6th Street Playhouse. 6thstreetplayhouse.com

The Youngers put togethera great first project with Output three years ago. Once they set the bar, they knew they had to do something pretty special to raise it. Todd Bartolo packed up his group from Pennsylvania and brought them to Hendersonville to the Cash Cabin, originally owned by Johnny Cash, now run by his son John Carter Cash so the Cash magic is still there for anyone who records there. The Youngers new album is Heritage.
