Hello, and thank you for listening to another episode of The Ian Cramer Podcast where I hope to provide you WITH a diverse collection of interviews with doctors and scholars of lifestyle medicine. I'd like to start off by thanking Frank Bragg as the newest Patron of the podcast. Thank you Frank, especially in this time of Covid. The world is very different, people's lives are very different, including mine. So your generosity in this time is much appreciated.   In episode #95, I am speaking with Seth Yoder. He came onto my radar after his name was mention by a previous guest of the podcast. So I looked him up, read some articles he wrote and liked the guy immediately. Like me, Seth really enjoys learning about nutrition and appreciates evidence and discourse. He does what very few people have time to do, critique the work of other people. I consider this to be what put Seth on the map. He is known in many circles for writing extensively about the work of Gary Taubes, who wrote many books including Good Calories, Bad Calories, and Nina Teicholz, who wrote The Big Fat Surprise. In our discussion, we talk about his education and what motivated him to critique these books and these authors. We then speak about his work with a new project called Red Pen Reviews which seeks to review popular nutrition books for their scientific accuracy and healthfulness. And we end with talking about Seth's advice on finding the best evidence within the nutrition space. Without further delay, I hope you enjoy my conversation with Seth Yoder. Hello again, and thank you for listening to the podcast that is dedicated to making you healthier and expanding your world view within the realm of Nutrition science, this is The Ian Cramer Podcast and I am your host, Ian Cramer. In this time of the Corona Virus, some of us feel helpless. It feels like we're stuck inside, we have to isolate, and can't help people who may need help. If you want to do something, and you don't have the skills to sew facemasks, you can Donate Blood. Patient with corona virus probably don't need blood transfusions, but because of what's happening and people isolating, there is a critical blood shortage. If you haven't donated before, that's OK. If you're a seasoned donator, great! Go to RedCross.org and click on “Give Blood” at the top of the page. It's just a good thing to do, and makes you feel good afterwards. This week, in Episode #93, I am joined by Dr. Jonathon McPhetres, PhD. Jon is a post doctoral research fellow at MIT and the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. A large part of his research as a professor of psychology focuses on science literacy, understanding why some may reject science, skepticism surrounding GMO's, why people fall for misinformation. In our discussion, we focus on GMO's. There is a lot of concern and fear surrounding GMO's, especially within the health and nutrition space. Is this warranted? Are there legitimate harms associated with GMO's? We start out with what are GMO's, What are real life examples of GM Foods, the regulatory process and the safety of these foods and How Jon's perspective has changes on this subject over time. We also cover the study he authored, entitled “Modifying attitudes about modified foods: Increased knowledge leads to more positive attitudes”, and end by talking about why people sometimes reject science. Having found Jon by accident, this was a very pleasant discussion, I really enjoyed it, and learned from Jon's perspective. I will post links to Jon's website and his study in the show notes. And without further delay, please enjoy my conversation on Episode #93, with Post Doctoral Fellow and Professor of Psychology, Dr. Jonathan McPhetress. https://neurosciencenews.com/gmo-science-14107/ Would you eat genetically modified food if you understood the science behind it? And if that position changed? This is episode #92, with Nutrition enthusiast, Nick Heibert. He is a blogger and creator of the Nutrient Density cheat sheet. He took linguistics and nutritional science at the University of Manatoba. By trade, he is an audio engineer, but as a passionate side hobby, he like learning and reading and writing about nutrition topics. He wanted to make sure I mention this…that he doesn't consider himself an expert, but doing what he's doing to learn as much as he can. You may be asking…why is Ian interviewing a nutrition enthusiast? And not an expert? It's partly because he's an interesting character on Twitter who isn't afraid to engage in discussions. He knows more than me about nutrition than me so I wanted to learn from him, and partly because of his general attitude and demeanor on Twitter. He is civil, engages responsibly, wants to learn, isn't afraid of making mistakes and is not dogmatic about nutrition. In our discussion, we spend a lot of time speaking about lipids, in particular this hullabaloo over olive oil. Is it healthy? Is it no? Does it cause atherosclerosis? Nick get's really nichey with the science on this. We talk about MonoUnSat fats, PolyUnsat Fats and Saturated Fats, We also talk about his Nutrient Density Cheat sheet which is a very useful tool to eat healthfully and cheaply, but is also a way to optimize your nutrition and learn what foods are highest in copper? Or other Vitamins and Minerals? It also covers the amino acid profile of foods, macro profiles, nutrient ratio scores and much more. And we talk about how you can get a discount on his cheat sheet…it's at the end…listen to the episode! We talk about Nick's changing nutrition philosophies. We speak about how he was a huge fan of low carb nutrition, and how and why he turned pretty significantly to a more well rounded view of nutrition. Nick and I end the discussion on 2 topics: One having to do with him challenging my beliefs and giving me things to think about that may run counter to narratives we often hear within the plant-based nutrition, AND second, an article Nick wrote about diabetes and he explains his unique interpretation of its etiology.

Hello, I am Ian Cramer and welcome to my podcast where I speak to doctors and scholars of lifestyle medicine. Lifestyle medicine is a branch of medicine where your chronic disease or ailment is treated and often times reversed with diet and lifestyle. If diet and lifestyle causes the chronic disease, it can likely be reversed with diet and lifestyle change, rather than prescriptions that mask symptoms or procedures that don't address the root cause. In episode 90, I am speaking with Dr. Bonnie Coyle. She is the Chairman of Community Health and Preventive Medicine at St. Luke's University Health Network. I met her at the Lehigh Valley Vegfest in Tatamy, Pennsylvania. I reached out to Bonnie through previous podcast guest and organizer of the Lehigh Valley VegFest Meghan Grega. This is one of the rare instances these days where I got to use my portable equipment and we had an in-person discussion, which listening to it in post-production had a different, more intimate feel. Given the choice, I would make all of my conversations in person because of better sound quality, more personal, more emotions, more social ques. They're just better. Someday. In our discussion, we speak about: What got her into Lifestyle Medicine- I'm sure her story is very relatable with many listeners out there. We address lifestyle and Preventative medicine juxtaposed to the modern medical paradigm and the work arounds for physicians and medical professionals out there who want to implement more of these preventative tactics and who still want to make a career out of it. Because Bonnie's territory spans both rural and urban in the Lehigh Valley, we speak about what differences she sees in those patient populations both from a perspective of specific diseases and their etiology and interventions to those problems. One of the only chronic ailments we speak about is High Blood Pressure, Standards and how it's a symptom that often flies under the radar. Bonnie's take on the Ketogenic diet- Devil's Advocate. The role epidemiology plays in Bonnie's decisions and a common devil's advocate question about Nutritional Epi. Shift gears into speaking about Opioids and their prevalence in her area. Universal Healthcare or Medicare for All. Bonnie as the next Surgeon General- End with something Bonnie has changed her mind on recently. Thank you for listening, and I hope you enjoy my conversation, on Episode #90, with Physician Dr. Bonnie Coyle.

Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of The Ian Cramer Podcast. I am the host Ian Cramer, and I strive to fill this podcast with thought leaders within the realm of lifestyle medicine. Allied Health Care professionals and expert academics who are either prescribing diet and lifestyle changes to their patients, or who are conducting research in this every growing field. Before we get into this episode, I want to thank our sponsors. Actually…just kidding, there are no sponsors of the podcast. Other than the generous patronage of 52 individuals who enjoy my content, who value my work and who support my mission of helping people through diet and lifestyle change. With that said, I'd like to thank our newest Patron Mike Eisenberg. Thank you Mike for your support and for listening. And if you find value in my work like Mike does, you too can become a patron for as little as $1 per episode by logging on to Patreon.com/IanCramerPodcast. In episode 89, I am joined by a previous guest of the podcast. Dr. Evan Allen who joined me for episode 62 of the podcast comes back for another discussion on his specialty, dietary fats. In my eyes, there is a lot of debate lately around dietary fats and saturated ftas. One side is saying they are unhealthy and should we avoid them as much as possible, and there's an every growing and enthusiastic side that is proclaiming that all of the science implicating saturated fats in the past 70 years is bunk and there isn't really strong evidence for avoiding Saturated Fats. Insert: Dr. Evan Allen. One of the leading experts arguing for limiting Saturated fats. He too has seen this confusion and debate as of late and understood how sound the science was. And because of that he decided to write a book on the subject entitled : Oversaturated: A guide to conversations about Fats with your patients. You can buy his book and educate yourself about Saturated Fats wherever books are sold. In our discussion we speak about: His new Book on Saturated Fats and why he wanted to write it. Specific papers in the literature that conclude that Sat. Fats are not harmful, and why those papers are wrong. We go into different types of evidence that we have based nutritional recommendations on. We speak about the 4 papers and 1 editorial published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in October 2019 that conclude, again, that Sat. Fats are not harmful.  We talk at length about a chapter in his book on Ceramides, what they are and should we be concerned. Populations that changed their diets to one of lower saturated fats and saw improvements in their health. Without further delay, please enjoy my second conversation with Evan Allen, on Episode #89. Closing: Nutrition science is confusing, even to someone like me who has been learning about this for the past 8 years. Which is why it's really nice to have someone like Dr. Allen out there to explain the science and the counter points. If you enjoyed this and if you feel others around you are confused about saturated fats or diet in general, share it with your networks, friends and family. There are so many ways you can do this…social media, word of mouth, directly from your podcast player. Take a screenshot or screen grab of the podcast and share it that way, too. You can also thank Dr. Allen directly, connect with him and even ask him follow-up questions on Twitter @EAllen0417. And as I mentioned in the Intro, he has a new book out Entitled Oversaturated: A guide to conversations about Fats with your patients that you can purchase as well. As always, you can connect with me on Instagram at IanMCramer, Facebook or to get the quickest response, on Twitter @IanCramer. Welcome to the Ian Cramer Podcast…where I am interested in speaking with doctors and scholars of lifestyle medicine, teaching people about chronic diseases, their etiology and encouraging people to prevent and reverse their chronic diseases with diet and lifestyle factors. In Episode 88, for the second time on the podcast, I am joined by the dynamic duo, Robby Barbaro and Cyrus Khambatta. They are the founders of the Mastering Diabetes approach to diabetes prevention, reversal and regression. It's a privilege to be sharing with you the announcement of their new book, Mastering Diabetes, The revolutionary method to reverse insulin resistance permanently, in Type 1, 1.5, 2, pre-diabetes and Gestational diabetes.  This book that took 2 years to write has over 800 citations, 30 recipies and a 21-day meal plan for how to execute this program, detailed info on scientific questions on diabetes and insulin resistance. They teach you the science that your doctor never taught you. For the super nerds out there who really want to understand the biology and physiology of various types of diabetes, this is the book for you. For diabetics, the prospect of eating fruit is a game changer! This book teaches you the science of why eating fruit and potatoes and carbohydrate rich food is not only possible, but recommended. They also have a simple green light, yellow light and red light traffic light system that makes it simple to figure out what to eat. Robbie and Cyrus joined me for Episode 52. And if you want a phenomenal 1-2 punch primer and advanced discussion on diabetes, listen to these 2 episodes. In this episode, we start off by speaking about the fundamental differences in the 2 primary diabetes philosophies out there. There's the “Carbohydrate-centric” philosophy which seeks to limit dietary carbohydrates, then there's the “Fat-centric' philosophy that Robbie and Cyrus adhere to which seeks to limit dietary saturated fats and put diabetes patients on a high carbohydrate diet. Crazy to think about, but they are seeing amazing success. And as I said in our first conversation, if you're skeptical, please keep an open mind, listen to this episode and then form a position after. Robbie and Cyrus are 2 of the most un-imposing characters in this space, they mentioned at the end that they're not out to argue with people, create enemies, bad-mouth others. They're mission is to help people and give them information to take control of their health. We move onto the cause of diabetes, defining insulin resistance and trying to elucidate its etiology. And I pose many devil's advocate questions of my own that I have observed on twitter and the interwebs. I get their thoughts on CGM's for diabetics and non-diabetics, their thoughts on fasting insulin, and then we go into questions from twitter covering the relationship between BMI and T2D, the effect of Sat. Fats from plants on blood glucose control, MD referrals to the Mastering diabetes program, PB Keto and Adverse events from their high-carb program for diabetics. Without further delay, please enjoy my second conversation, on Episode 88, with Robbie Barbaro and Cyrus Khambatta, PhD. The best way to buy Robby and Cyrus's book, is to go to https://www.masteringdiabetes.org/book/ They can check out from multiple places, like Amazon, Barnes and Nobel and a couple others. International listeners and buyers can also order it from that link as well. Hello and welcome to another episode of The Ian Cramer Podcast. I am the one-man-band podcast creator Ian Cramer. This podcast seeks to interview doctors and scholars of lifestyle medicine. I want to bring thought leaders to my audience, those who are doing research within the lifestyle medicine, nutritional science space, or who are treating patients using diet, exercise, and lifestyle approaches. Why do I do this? Well, I hate to be a pessimist, but our healthcare system isn't working that well. In the United States, we're spending way more money per person than other countries, and it doesn't really seem like people are getting healthier. What are we spending that money on? Procedures and prescriptions! And status-quo! When what we really need more of is basic education, lifestyle interventions, we don't need the latest greatest stent or lipid-lowering medication, what we need is lasting diet and lifestyle changes. And those who emphasize these pillars, is who I fill this podcast with. Welcome.   In Episode 87, am joined by a Twitter lighting rod. His name is Kevin Bass, and at least from my observations of him, lots of people love him, and a disproportionate number of people do not like his style. Kevin is an MD/PhD student in Texas. He has a BS in biology and BA in anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin and an MS in immunology. For his PhD, he studies the potential use of the ketogenic diet as an adjunctive therapy in the prevention and treatment of cancer, focusing particularly on the role of G-protein-coupled receptor GPR109A. He will return to medical school in 2021 to complete his medical degree. He also has a particular interest in nutrition, nutrition science and how diet and lifestyle play a role in chronic disease prevention and reversal. What caught my attention about Kevin and what motived me to speak to him for an episode of the podcast was the way he always speaks up when something is not evidence-based. He is candid, he's sometimes rough around the edges, yet also capable and open to scholarly discussions, He challenges my thinking, gets my wheels turning and makes me think more critically about topics having to do with chronic diseases, diet and lifestyle changes. I've also enjoyed reading Kevin's blog articles on various topics within nutritional science. He stands up for what's right, he speaks up against pseudoscience, espouses scientific integrity, he is intellectually honest and curious, and even in this episode, he pushed back a few times on my statements and philosophies with his interpretations of the literature. I find the way he approaches topics in an unbiased and pro/con way very refreshing. In this discussion, we speak about his doctoral dissertation on a Ketogenic diet and cancer. We start with discussing the physiology of a ketogenic diet, then dovetail into the origins of this dietary strategy and different definitions of ketogenic diets. We then speak about various applications of ketogenic diets such as Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, Obesity and metabolic disorders, and longevity, and then end with a summary of the literature on ketogenic diets and cancer prevention and treatment. You may hear in this episode that we mention a Part 1 several times. We did record a part 1 several weeks before we recorded this. But after some deliberation, we agreed that we would not publish that because we weren't happy with it. In spending over 3 hours with Kevin, I learned things not only about ketogenic diets but also how to be a better podcaster and host and interviewer, which is something else I appreciate about him. I thank Kevin very much for his time, and thank you for listening. Without further delay, I hope you enjoy my conversation, on Episode number 87, with Kevin Bass.  I really enjoyed that, and appreciate how much time Kevin gives people, whether it's a podcast, or on twitter or through his blog articles. I am honored that Sarah and many others have generously decided to make per-podcast donations to help me continue my work into 2020 and beyond. Patron and listener donations help offset the costs of hosting subscriptions, tools, resources, equipment and other important stuff to keep the lights on. If you enjoy and look forward to these conversations, you too can become a patron and help support my work by logging on to Patreon.com/IanCramerPodcast. A Patron recently pointed out, rightly so, that I don't have any commercials at the beginning of my podcast advertising Mattresses, clothing or vegan hot dogs. Besides these short monologs and intros, I want to keep these episodes free from commercials. It just makes more sense that way to be supported by the listener, rather than large companies. In episode #86, I am speaking to Registered Dietician and Postdoctoral Fellow and the Baylor School of Medicine, Kevin Klatt. Kevin came on to my radar through…any guesses??? Twitter! Kevin received his PhD in Molecular Nutrition from Cornell University and completed his dietetic internship at the National Institutes of Health. His research focuses on better understanding nutrient metabolism and requirements using in vitro and animal model systems, as well as human intervention and controlled feeding trials. Kevin is an active member of the executive committee of the Research Dietetics Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and serves on the Public Information Committee of the American Society for Nutrition. To begin our conversation, Kevin and I speak about Choline, an alleged nutrient of concern. We go into the nitty gritty on its chemical make-up, it's physiologic purpose and if it is indeed, a nutrient of concern. Towards the end of 2019, an article was spreading around social media saying those eating a plant-based diet aren't going to get enough…and more accurately, were going to be dumber because they weren't going to get enough. Pro Tip: If a headline disparages a group based on their diet, it's click-bait and likely not true.   We also speak about another dietary metabolite of concern, TMAO. This is often thrown around within the plant-based circles as something that we should be aware of…so I ask Kevin if this is true. I get Kevin's take on a plant-based diet and a Keto diet and the healthfulness and potential risks of those diets. We speak about the controversial role of epidemiology in shaping dietary practices. And lastly, we speak about the term ‘moving the goalposts' within nutritional science how you can tell if someone is doing this, why they might be doing it, and what you can do to spot it and respond. Without further delay, I hope you enjoy my conversation with Registered Dietician and Post-doctoral fellow, Kevin Klatt. I've enjoyed Kevin's writing and tweeting for many months, and there are many people like me. He is seen as one of the most reasonable and non-dogmatic academic voices within the sphere of nutrition science on Twitter. And with that theme of reason, one of the underlying messages I hope to convey in these conversations is keeping an open mind and staying curious. Ask questions, use evidence, listen to other arguments and lines of evidence that are given. Step away from the echo chambers and expose yourself to various lines of thought to become more well rounded and to understand the broader consensuses in this field. Please share this podcast with those around you, by word of mouth or through social media. I always Pin the most recent episode on my Twitter and Facebook, and you can also share from my website, IanMCramer.com, as well as iTunes or whatever podcasting app you use. Hello 2020, and Welcome Everyone. This is the voice of Ian Cramer and this is the start of the 4th year of my podcast, where I seek to interview doctors and scholars of lifestyle medicine. The professionals that fill this podcast are treating patients in the field, reversing chronic diseases, prescribing diet and lifestyle changes in order for their patients to regain their health, without the emphasis on pills and procedures. I do this because I enjoy learning and I'm sure listeners can learn something from the experiences of my guests. I'd first like to extend a special Thank You to Jeff Johnson and an Anonymous Patron as the newest Patrons of the Podcast. This anonymous Patron wrote to me and said “I share your curiosity and open-mindedness…Please continue to interview people who do not entirely share your own line of thinking. This has been hugely helpful to me, and I suspect many others as well…In 2020 I'm hoping the nutrition community can focus more on areas of agreement, as well as exploring the unknowns in areas of disagreement”. Me Too, Well said. I would also like to Thank Stacy Banks, who has helped me over the past year with my social media. She has assisted me with scheduling posts and streamlining my social media to free up some time, and for her hard work I'd like to thank her publicly. Thank you again, Stacy. In Episode 85, I'm speaking with Brooklyn Borough president Eric Adams. I learned about Eric through an article highlighting his story, his health scare and his determination to do everything he could to reverse the damage that had been done and regain his health without prescriptions. I was also encouraged to interview Eric from a Patron who lives in Brooklyn, thank you Natasha for the gentle nudges to reach out to Eric and get him on the podcast. In our conversation, we speak about his S&S he experienced as he learned of several chronic ailments. Including his Type 2 diabetes, and the significance of an A1C of 17.  As someone who favors prevention over treatment, I ask Eric to reflect on his journey and think about if anything could have changed his diet and lifestyle years before he was actually forced to take action. As the President of the Borough of Brooklyn, we talk about changes taking place in his jurisdictions to help people lead healthier lives. At the time of this interview which was Late 2019, there was recently a ban on Chocolate Milk in all NYC Schools, and we talk about the process of making legislation that affects food, and people's health and wellbeing.  And Lastly, we speak about how other civic leaders and change makers can make a difference in their areas and how you can help others lead healthier lives from a policy perspective. Without further delay, I hope you enjoy our conversation on Episode 85 with Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams. THE BEAUTY OF this age we're living in now, is we can all be change makers. You're all leaders, and role models…even if you're not in an elected position, you can all help people around you. I am inspired by Eric to do more in my area to change the food environments, policies and laws to help people get healthier. Start small, you don't have to shoot for the moon. Start with your friends, have a pot-luck, have an informational session about living a healthier diet and lifestyle at your house. Several years back when I was presenting at local libraries about the power of diet and lifestyle on health and disease, some people reached out to me saying that they started to present at local libraries after they saw me do it. That made me feel good. Don't think that you're too small, or don't know enough people to make change. Change starts one person at a time. No matter what topic it is, I encourage you to do what you're passionate about and keep it fun, keep it responsible and respectful. People are listening and willing to follow people who lead by example. It is going to be a busy month of January, at last count I have 8 interviews booked that I'm really excited about. I say over and over to myself, to keep this fun. Speak to people who interest me, about topics that I want to learn more about. And by extension, I hope you want to know more about too. I've hashed out my 2020 plan and guest list, and it's going to be a better year than last.

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Ian Cramer Podcast, where I seek out doctors and scholars of lifestyle medicine. Smart people who are either doing research, who have a very particular sub-specialty or who are treating patients directly in the field. Lee came highly recommended from several people as someone who is knowledgeable and an energetic, ball of fire when it came to nutrition and motivating people to transform their health. Joining me for Episode 84 is Lee Crosby, a Registered dietician employed at The Barnard Medical Center in Washington, DC. Lee sees patients and advises them when it comes to weight loss, preventing and reversing heart disease, diabetes and women's health issues. As you'll hear, she had her own health scare a few years ago that taught her some valuable lessons about the role diet and lifestyle play in chronic disease. In this episode, we speak about Ketogenic diets. With full disclosure, Lee is a very outspoken critic of Ketogenic diets. To be fair, we do speak about the positive applications of a ketogenic diet, and caution people on the risks and downsides of eating this way as well.   A quick producers Note: You'll notice very quickly that the sound quality coming from my end on this conversation is terrible. Instead of using my studio mic, the sound was being recorded from my built in microphone from my computer. The reason has been identified and I hope that it never happens again. This is the reason why I stress to my guests to obtain an after-market microphone and DO NOT use the built-in mics. That come stock in computers. To the regular listeners of the podcast, I thank you for the time you've given me over the past year, and for those of you who are new, I hope you stick around for more episodes. Have a happy holiday and New Year, as you enjoy the last conversation of 2019, on Episode #84 with Registered Dietician Lee Crosby.

He is someone who truly embodies what it means to follow your dreams, live your passions and do what makes you happy.  Jay came onto my radar about 5 or 6 years ago through YouTube, when I was learning about this lifestyle. His style is no nonsense, no fluff, simple, candid, uses evidence. He's also an athlete, which appealed to me as well.  Our discussion takes a walk down a different road than normal. We step away from the details of medicine and talk about living a fulfilled life, living your dreams, living healthy.  We speak about Jay's story of being a young professional, working himself to the bone and being nauseous at the thought of leaving for work every day for a job he hated. We speak about him being an athlete, and being unhealthy, and then finding a healthy lifestyle again. Jay is a black belt in jiu jitsu, and we speak about that. We also speak about trends within social media on nutrition and personal health and provide ways to think about that.  The big take-away that I want to discuss in the epilogue is following your north star, doing what makes you happy and marching to the beat of your own drum. Jay and I talk about going through life transitions that are hard, that in the moment seem destructive or uncomfortable. But that life is long, and that we need to put things into perspective.

This connection with my guest Saul Bautista was made through a mutual friend who has now recommended several people for the podcast. It was fun speaking to Saul because he's around my age, he wasn't as intimidating as some of my other high-profile guests and we weren't in a huge hurry to get done by a certain time. We had time to talk organically.  In trying to summarize this conversation and the course Saul's life has taken, the word ‘fate' comes to mind. Everything from his time in being with the Army, to his parent's divorce to him getting injured to the signing of the GI Bill, all played a serendipitous role in who he is and where he is right now. Noteworthy talking points include: How his experience in the armed forces shaped who he is today and solidified his decision to go into medicine. His interest in exercise and disease prevention. The Relationship of doctors and lifestyle medicine and the reasons why we don't see more doctors doing this now. The relationship between medicine and medical students, creativity and aversion to risk has on the spread of this idea of lifestyle medicine. We end with talking about his appearance in the much hyped Code Blue film that highlights the lack of nutrition and lifestyle medicine education in med. Schools. It's the brainchild of podcast guest by Dr. Saray Stancic, who was featured on Ep. 32 of the podcast. It's Saul's perspective as a med student and as someone who has a deep understanding of the power of lifestyle medicine that makes this talk unique. Despite the genetics predispositions she may have inherited from her parents, she has not let those genetics dictate her day to day decisions on trying to live as healthful as possible.  Chef AJ is a ball of fire, she supportive, frank and inspiration and I think you'll really enjoy her in this episode, but I encourage all of you to check out her work on Facebook where she empowers people to take control of their health.  Please enjoy this conversation on Episode 58, with Chef AJ.

ICP 53: Dr. Jamie Kane- Cracking the code of Obesity

Dr. Jamie Kane didn't really like the choices available for fellowships as he was graduating from his residency. None of them appealed to him. And because of that, he blazed his own trail, learned about the intricacies of Obesity and years later started a fellowship in Obesity Management for future medical students. In our conversation, Dr. Kane and I discuss the current medical system and how it's set up in a way to discourage the interventions that our patients need the most. It's easy and quick to prescribe pills, to ask them if anything has changed since last visit. But it takes time to dig down and figure out what's wrong with a patient who weighs 400 pounds. It take more than a 15 minute follow-up slot. The Physical, Mental and Emotional all play different roles for different people, and it's an incredibly gray, nuanced area of medicine. But luckily, we have people like Dr. Jamie Kane. Look forward to topics such as food, exercise, circadian rhythm, breaking addictive cycles and how Dr. Kane himself deals with emotions, at times, with unresponsive or unmotivated patients. I want to end by giving a shout out to a couple of new patrons of the podcast. Because she may want to retain some form of anonymity, I want to use just her first name, thank you to Anna for your very generous yearly donation. Anna doesn't really feel comfortable with donating to the Patreon page of the podcast, and that's OK. If you want to support my work financially, there are other avenues or ways you can do this. If this sounds like you, reach out in any way that's convenient and we'll talk. Thank you, Anna for your generosity. Another big thank you to Danielle Durant, who is a new patron and new member of the Board of Trustees. Danielle is completing her PhD in Public Health and is gung ho for lifestyle medicine and plant-based nutrition. And in her multiple e-mails we exchanged back and forth, she said “I just recently started listening to your show and LOVE IT! I am a big fan of Rich Roll but he doesn't interview enough plant based docs, in my opinion. I have been bingeing your content since I found your podcast, and even though I have studied plant-based nutrition pretty extensively, I still learn something new in each episode.” Wow..thank you Danielle. It's surreal and humbling that someone would mention the content that Rich Roll's produced and the work that I produce in the same sentence because he is an idol of mine and someone that I look up to, but on the other hand, Rich and I and all of you who are listening, we're all on the same team. We're all teammates, we're all on a mission seeking the same set of goals; to get healthier and live as advocates and ambassadors to this movement in some form or fashion. Words like Danielle's and donations are wind in my sails. But like I've said in the past, any small gesture of appreciation for my work is great, it's not like if you don't donate I don't appreciate you. Other things you can do to help the cause are sharing episodes on social media- That's how Danielle learned about my podcast, through social media… or you could also write a review on the iTunes store, buy me a book or send me a Tweet of appreciation and I'll retweet it…they're all great! Thank you. I'm glad these episodes are helping you. And please look forward to many more in the future. We'll see you in a couple of weeks.

If you or someone you know if living with pre-diabetes, Full blown Type 2 diabetes or is a Type 1 diabetic, this is the episode for you. Robby and Cyrus are experts at treating and reversing pre-diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes, a scourge to over 100 million people in the US, according to a new CDC report. In our discussion, we get into the details of what is truly causing Type 2 Diabetes, the enormous role our diet plays in causing this and the role our diet can play in reversing it. We also juxtapose their method of treating diabetes with other methods touted in the interwebs and talk about which one is better and why. And as you could tell in the intro, Robby and Cyrus treat it very differently than you would think. They are able to reverse a disease of too much blood sugar with foods that contain lots of carbohydrates, or sugars. It seems wildly counterintuitive and it seems like they're nuts, but Trust me, by the end of this hour, you will understand why, you'll understand the root cause of why people have Type 2 Diabetes and be able to take control of your health and learn more about this completely 100% preventable disease. So, Let's get right into it, on Episode 52, with Robby Barbaro and Cyrus Khambatta of Mastering Diabetes. Special thank you to Adam Sud who gave me a nudge and recommended I speak with Robby and Cyrus. I really enjoyed that conversation. And more thank you's to 2 new patrons, Fellow plant-based CYcist Stephen Collins and Bilberry Elf, thank you for your kindness and support. Do you pay for a Netflix subscription? Or Perhaps Sports Illustrated, National Geographic or The New York Times? If so, you do this because you get value and enjoyment out of those publications, magazines or newspapers. In this case, my publication is free and always will be because I feel in the bottom of my heart that this information is too important to withhold from the public. So my business model is slightly different and the barriers to obtain this information are essentially zero, but the ‘value aspect' still remains. And so I will end this episode with asking you, how much do you value these conversations? You might say “Not enough to pay for them”. And that's fine, no judgment. Think about it and check out Patreon.com/IanCramerPodcast for more details on how this works. No donation is more important than another, every bit counts. Reach out if you have questions. Dr. Koushik Reddy is a physician working for the Department of Veteran's Affairs in Tampa, Florida. Although his story has its unique details, his overall journey to find lifestyle medicine and plant-based nutrition is like many others. He learned about how the human body works and trained in traditional western medicine techniques. He had an ‘Ah ha” moment and realized there must be another way to practice medicine. He stood on the shoulders of giants in the field and learned from the teachings of many physicians who were the early trailblazers. And now practices and teaches lifestyle medicine to everyone he encounters and is now truly helping people realize the healthy lives they were meant to live. I will include, in the show notes, an article Dr. Reddy penned which outlines the way he used to practice medicine and how that all changed. It's his whole story in 4 pages. The piece is entitled “I have a carrot and a stent, you pick”. This encompasses Dr. Reddy and his style of medicine so well because with what he knows now, he puts much of the responsibility of the patient's health back in their hands and helps them realize that the power was always in their hands, and in some cases, gives them a second chance at life. I can't say it any better than he can, so lets get right into this weeks conversation, on Episode #51, with Dr. Koushik Reddy. I'm very grateful for those of you who are listening who are Patrons, those of you have shared the podcast with your friends or on social media, or the 91 of you who have written a positive and honest review on iTunes. It means a lot, it gives me encouragement that I am doing something that has meaning in people's lives. This message is for everyone else. I'd love for you to be part of the team, part of this movement. If this podcast has made you smarter, healthier and more informed, or even if it's helped you avoid or reduce medications or a stent or other procedure, how much is that worth to you? If I have helped you, would you consider helping me further this message and my work? Never expected, but always appreciated. If you want to see what you can do to help, check out Patreon.com/IanCramerPodcast to find out about how you can help spread this message. We'll see you next episode. And until that time, keep eating more plants, stay curious, remain responsible and compassionate ambassadors to this movement and may you live to be 100 years old.
