In this episode of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Chéri Smith, President and CEO of the The Alliance for Tribal Clean Energy. ATCE is an Indigenous-led nonprofit that supports the self-determined efforts of Native American tribes transitioning to a clean energy future. It was founded in 2016 by Chéri, and formerly known as the Indigenous Energy Initiative (IEI).Chéri also serves as an Advisor to the Yale School of Business and the Environment, served as an Advisory Board member for the Masters in Renewable Energy degree program at Penn State, and as a Buffalo & Erie County, NY Workforce Investment Board Director. She is an MIT Indigenous Communities Fellow, a Cordes Fellow, and a Climate Leader, trained by former Vice President, Al Gore. She has 20+ years of experience in senior leadership and consulting roles with organizations including Tesla/SolarCity, U.S. Department of Energy, Interstate Renewable Energy Council, American Council on Renewable Energy, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and Boston University. She and Ted discuss her background, born and raised in the Boston area, descended through both of her parents, from the Mi'kmaq nation of Northern Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. They also discuss the evolution of Indigenous Energy Initiative, from its grassroots origins to becoming the Alliance for Tribal Clean Energy. With the passing of the IRA, The Alliance is providing the critical technical and financial assistance and wrap-around services tribes are currently seeking in order to build their own capacity – to access and manage the historic amounts of federal energy infrastructure and climate funding, and to ensure these historic investments are implemented in an equitable and just way. As a 25-year veteran of the renewable energy sector, Chéri is leveraging her deep experience and relationships to support tribes in their self-determined pursuit of renewable energy as a means to diminish poverty, mitigate climate change, and restore true sovereignty and hope.
At the time of recording, Indigenized Indigenous Energy Initiative was named Indigenous Indigenized Energy Initiative.Indigenous Energy Initiative:Indigenous Energy Initiative (IEI) is a native-led non-profit and Earth Island Institute-sponsored project that is developing solar infrastructure within tribal communities. Native communities disproportionately lack access and pay higher costs for utilities, especially electricity, which significantly impacts access and opportunities for remote work, education, and more. In 2014, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that 14% of native households lack access to electricity, which is ten times the national average. IEI is working to increase indigenous energy ownership and access to help address the social, economic, and environmental injustices that burden native communities. IEI's focus is on building energy independence as a way to support indigenous communities and eradicate energy poverty. IEI is currently working within the Northern Cheyenne Reservation community in Montana to guide the reservation's $4.1 million solar initiative. IEI's first project was Muddy Hill Microgrid which was a small solar system to support a multi-use community center, fire station, and water filtration system on the reservation. The project was built by tribal members who received solar training through IEI. In 2021, IEI worked on a residential project for elders in the Standing Rock Reservation. Another project IEI is currently working on is the White River Community solar project which is developing residential solar for specific tribal elders and commercial solar for several schools. The Department of Energy is providing $3.2 million of funding for the project and the reservation, and IEI must match twenty percent of this funding. Chéri Smith:Chéri Smith is the founder and CEO of the IEI. Smith is the descendent of the Mi'kmaq tribe of Maine/Canadian maritime and her mission is to use her expertise in climate change and economics to educate, build solar capacity and bring independence to indigenous communities. Smith has two decades of experience in energy and environmental sustainability in multiple sectors from the public, private, NGOs, higher education, consulting, and tribal communities. Before IEI, Smith worked as a coordinator at Tesla-SolarCity, Director of Education and Outreach at the American Council on Renewable Energy, she served as an advisory board member for Masters in Renewable Energy program at Pennsylvania State University, worked as an advisor at the Yale School of Business and the Environment, and worked on Core Education Advisory Committee for SEIA's Solar Power International. Additionally, Smith founded and was the Executive Director of the nonprofit Solar Campus Initiative and there worked as Climate Leader trained by Al Gore. Smith also was awarded the Cordes Fellowship for recognition for developing solar projects for native communities. Through her work at IEI, Smith works to honor her native heritage and use energy knowledge to make native communities more resilient, independent, and sustainable sovereignties. Are your dreams just sitting within your perceived realm of possibility, or are you expanding it? Oftentimes, we are held back from our full potential because we feel we aren't capable or great enough to pursue our goals. Former Tesla executive turned podcasting CEO, Billy Saleebey, joins us today to tell you that you have everything it takes to achieve greatness by simply putting one foot in front of the other. “So step number one could be a micro step, the smallest step you could possibly imagine. And that's okay. And then the third thing I would say is get someone in your life. Who's going to hold you accountable to doing those steps. You share your vision with them as detailed as possible. And by the way, the vision, you keep adding more details. You keep adding more, making it more real in your mind, making each step something that you can actually visualize yourself doing.” In this episode, Billy also talks about co-founding Podify – a podcasting company that helps podcast shows scale and reach their respective goals; leading with purpose and empathy, and the importance of believing in yourself. “Connection is the window to happiness. Yeah. If we don't connect and I mean really connect with other people, it's gonna be hard to find happiness. There's so many things that happen in our lives, obstacles, challenges, valleys, and also the high points. And if we don't have people to experience all of those things with, life becomes lonely and life becomes very challenging. I look at my life and I think to myself, how fortunate I am to have grown up with parents who taught me the power of connection.” In this episode: (01:00) - How Billy leaped from being a Tesla exec to podcasting (3:38) - The culmination of Podify (6:14) - Spotting an opportunity (9:54) - Valuing your dreams and going after them (15:04) - Living with empathy (16:31) - Emerging from obstacles (19:09) - Radical transparency (21:33) - Starting with a vision (26:21) - Finding a productivity ritual (31:52) - Finding the right pace (33:47) - Finding time to pause (38:31) - Purifying your intention (39:18) - Billy's message of hope Guest After leading global learning and development teams for the most disruptive companies in the world (Tesla/SolarCity), Billy decided to go all in on podcasting. He is the creator and host of Insight Out, a show dedicated to revealing and dissecting life-changing insights; For the Love of Podcast, a show dedicated to the podcast community. Billy is the co-founder of Podify, a podcasting services, and technology company that specializes in the production and promotion of digital media and podcasts. It feels as if the solar industry talks a lot – a lot – about how important federal policy is to pushing the solar industry forward. Which is why, when you have the chance to vote for a strong solar advocate and add another voice to the Congress in favor of our industry, we should do it. Meet Sam Jammal, who is running for the soon-to-be-open California’s 39th District (CA-39) in north Orange County. Jammal comes from a solar background, having worked for Tesla/SolarCity, where he traveled the country speaking on solar issues. As he talked to people around the country, he realized how much the industry needed more vocal support on Capitol Hill. So when his current Congressman announced his retirement, Sam Jammal decided to run as a Democrat in what has traditionally been a pretty conservative county – in large part because he believes strongly that solar will be the way the country is powered in the future. And not some distant future, either.
The guys tackle the concerning feeling that roofs are not quite as populated as years past. Why? News suggests that installs are down nationally and various reasons are cited and they even go so far as to explore how one company could be responsible? Tesla/Solarcity? But the World bank has other plans ceasing all funding for upstream oil and gas projects moving forward seems to suggest that renewables squarely have a place at the energy table. Matt Egan of CNN also suggests that there are signs that renewables may continue to gain ground on fossil fuels, especially coal. "The seismic shift in renewables economics" will cause "large reductions in carbon intensity in the global power sector," Morgan Stanley wrote in a recent research report. Several major markets have reached an "inflection point where renewables are the "cheapest form of new power generation," Morgan Stanley wrote. It expects that trend to spread to "nearly every country we cover by 2020." In local news Ensych and Holu Energy create a Solar plus storage PPA for the Cameron Center in Maui. Today's Product focus on Enphase Energy offers the guys a chance to review a Juggernaut in the renewable energies industry. Jay and Josh explore the rise of microinverters from the m175 all the way up to the current 6th gen IQ series. They are offered an interview with the founder of Enphase in an upcoming episode to explore the 8th generation microinverter coming in 2019 which is rumored to operate in backup mode during the day time without batteries!...yes without batteries….thats what I said without batteries. https://electrek.co/2017/11/09/solar-inverter-enphase-to-works-without-batteries-grid/ The day's future focus is about an amazing new tech coming out of NREL transparent photoelectric glass solar panels that achieve an astounding 11% efficiency. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/nonprofit-incubator-signs-a-solar-plus-storage-ppa-with-ensync-energy-300571118.html https://electrek.co/2017/12/15/egeb-us-solar-slowing/amp/ https://www.streetinsider.com/Corporate+News/Tesla+largely+responsible+for+slide+in+U.S.+home+solar+sales/13604538.html http://www.worldbank.org/en/news/press-release/2017/12/12/world-bank-group-announcements-at-one-planet-summit https://electrek.co/2017/11/29/solar-smart-windows-11-percent-efficiency/
