EPISODE 56 - “MARJORIE REYNOLDS: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 10/07/2024 Most film fanatics agree that after the Paramount Picture's holiday classic “Holiday Inn” (1942), actress MARJORIE REYNOLDS, who gave a star-turn as struggling actress Linda Mason who gets a break singing and dancing in the seasonal nightclub run by BING CROSBY, should have been a big star. However, for reasons not quite clear, she didn't rise into the stratosphere. While she had a very respectable and long career, she just didn't soar to the top, as expected. As our Star of the Month, we will take a look into Marjorie Reynolds' life and career and explore our theories on why “Holiday Inn” did not make her a major star. Biola is a Southern California evangelical school, similar to APU. It tends to be a little more conservative in every measurable way, but Hope and Nikki decided early on to push back at the repressive culture around them. They lived their lives to the fullest, going to great lengths to appear to be "good" Biola students while maintaining a fast-paced life of partying and fun. But it wasn't all fun and games. Their unwillingness to cater to white male fundamentalist rules made life difficult and even dangerous for them. In the end, both Hope and Nikki saw through the charade of Biola's "chill" and "relatable" evangelicalism and recognized the racism, sexism, and ridiculous purity culture vibes all around them. As one of the greatest selling soundtracks of all time, the film became an iconic classic almost as soon as it hit the theaters in 1987...33 years later the Dirty Dancing brand is a cultural phenomenon.Knowing the feeling of being hungry, Previte & DeNicola felt since their lives have been musically rewarded they have been donating thousands of dollars to charity. When their Dirty Dancing friend Patrick Swayze passed they contacted Swayze's wife Lisa and decided to donate proceeds from the sale of the "Dancing Dancing: The Original Demos" to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in memory of Patrick. Very blunt warning on the coronavirus from the nation's top doctor. Surgeon General Jerome Adams says this week, most Americans will face "the hardest and saddest" time of their lives. Across the nation, more than 337,000 cases of coronavirus are reported, but the real toll is likely much higher. More than 9,600 Americans have died. President Trump wants Americans to take an existing drug to fight the coronavirus, contradicting Dr. Anthony Fauci and other top scientists who say we don’t know if it’s the right medicine. Conditions appear to be improving in the two hardest his European countries, Italy and Spain. Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in a hospital for tests this morning because he’s had persistent coronavirus symptoms for more than a week. A new U.S. government report finds hospitals face a combination of problems -- slow testing, equipment shortages, and staff burnout -- that make it much harder to deal with the coronavirus. And one more problem: many of these hospitals are suddenly losing revenue.
