Natalie Bassingthwaighte knows a thing or two about reinvention. She’s done it multiple times in her career. Musical theatre performer. Singer. Actor. Television host. Reality TV star. She’s done it in her personal life, too. Sixteen months ago, Natalie joined Sarrah for an exclusive chat on the Stellar podcast, where she revealed for the first time that she had found new love with a woman. Now Natalie is back in the studio to reflect on what her life has looked like since: from navigating co-parenting on her own terms to basking in the glow of her relationship with her new partner and even starting to write her memoir. And as she looks ahead to her 50th birthday this September, Natalie explains why she wants to keep challenging herself by tackling things she’s never done before – like her current one-woman show Shirley Valentine. Listen to our previous interview with Natalie here Shirley Valentine is on at the Canberra Theatre Centre from March 19-23, and will open at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide on April 1 for eight performances only. This week we're going back to 1989 for a seminal Woman On Holidays classic - Shirley Valentine. It's a special afternoon in the Oliver household, as Actress Alison Steadman joins Andi and Miquita for an afternoon gimlet, and three types of fish - red mullet, sea bream and mackerel, finished with tamarind butter and wild garlic oil. She brings her husband, Actor Michael Elwyn. High on the agenda is the business of acting - as you'd expect with two incredible thespians in attendance! Navigating self doubt and rejection, self taped auditions, acting as a couple during lockdown, the luxury of being able to pick and choose roles, the harsh reality of getting older as an actress ( and why it can get easier for Michael as a man), the joy of improv, and Alison's iconic roles that span three generations of audience, with roles in Abigail's Party, Shirley Valentine, Nuts In May, Gavin & Stacey are all discussed. Miquita also successfully manages to steer the conversation onto the joys of bird watching, to the 'delight' of Andi!An Offscript Production, and YaYa Production. Five seconds after Jemma and Marina finished recording the last Trawl, typically, British politics took a new turn for the mad. Cleverly has declared that unless you earn £37.5K you can't settle here with a foreigner. Having crushed millions of people's hopes and dreams and stuck a big Tory finger up to romance, there's hardly time to scream 'But what about Shirley Valentine?' before moving on to the next psychodrama. Oh yes, it's Rwanda shitshow time. The Tories are fighting like rats in a sack, determined to get the 'Rwanda Safety Bill' through and to hell with the law. None of it has been edifying but Mark Francois strutting about talking about his 'star chamber' and 'spartans' and the 'five families' is particularly astounding and generates a lot of great tweets. George Monbiot put in a brilliantly impressive turn on Question Time so Marina and Jemma make sure you hear a bit of that. Then it's time to pay tribute to poet Benjamin Zephaniah who sadly died. It's fitting that this episode finishes with a poem for pudding. This one is written by Michael Forte (Jemma's dad) and the Trawl ladies think it's got Trawl written all over it. In the late 1980s I was inspired by the movie Shirley Valentine, a film that depicted a middle-aged London wife unhappy with her boring husband and her dreary life. "I want to sip wine in the place where the grape is grown" Shirley had said. So she chucked her husband and her life and jetted off to sunny Greece, swam topless, had an affair, and decided to stay. I guess she liked the wine better than her husband. ...

Ellen and Mark explore Brits abroad in the movies, taking a look at everything from 1972's Carry on Abroad to 2023's Cannes prize-winner How To Have Sex. Mark talks to Steve Chibnall, Professor of British Cinema at De Montfort University, about some of the most notable examples of Brits on holiday in 20th century cinema. They discuss the mid-century travelogue trend, what British holiday films can tell us about national identity and class, and how 1989's Shirley Valentine stands apart from other films in the genre. Ellen looks at two more recent examples of the British holiday film, speaking first to director Molly Manning Walker about her debut feature How To Have Sex. Molly reveals how the resort of Malia proved the perfect setting for the film, which follows three teenage girls navigating the complexities of sex and consent on a rite of passage clubbing holiday. And Ellen then speaks to actor Samantha Morton about her starring role in director Lynne Ramsay's 2002 cult classic Morvern Callar. They discuss Samantha's own experiences as a Brit abroad, her close working relationship with Ramsay, and why Morvern Callar remains so influential two decades on from its first release. Fonte: Metrópoles --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nativa-fm-campinas/support

During this week's episode, a warts & all one, I talk about my Shirley Valentine moments. I coined this phrase from the 80s British film - Shirley Valentine - which for me epitomises soul growth and the continual battle of feeling expansive but blocked at the same time.If we are pushing our soul growth, we can sometimes feel like the gap is widening between our self and our loved ones and we may even feel like we are leaving them behind in some ways.We start to fear the transformation and yet we desire it so deeply that this creates a sense of conflict & confusion within. When we evolve with soul, we shift in frequency and those around us will more often then not, catch us up, but in their own timeline.********************************If this week's episode is deeply resonating because you feel stuck in your growth process, then check out my Soul Alchemy Academy 6 week programme - opening very soon! You will feel safe & held in this beautiful, high-vibing space, as we take a deep dive together into what is holding you back from moving forwards. We will harness December's potent death-rebirth energies for releasing, cleansing & renewal in readiness for the New year.Start 2023 strong & empowered, clearer in your vision and able to move forwards with your highest expression of you.We will spend 3 weeks in January creating the internal shifts to unlock your soul potential...Sound good?Join me & your soul sisters in the Soul Alchemy Academy - doors opening very soon (mid Nov 2022)Thank-you so much for listening and I would love to hear about your Shirley Valentine moments! You can connect with me at @lunarlightworker on InstagramOr connect with me in our private lunarlightcommunity on FacebookWe deeply appreciate your continued support. I'm back from my Mediterranean cruise and want to share some stories. I visited the Greek Island of Mykonos in search of a location from The Bourne Identity. The island of course is more famous for staging large parts of the film Shirley Valentine, hailed as one of the best British comedies of all time. Directed by the James Bond director Lewis Gilbert no less. I do want to talk clothes as this is still a style based podcast and after 10 minutes of Mykonos talk I touch upon my new leather jacket and what a new leather jacket can do for one's confidence. Don't forget to leave a review or get in touch through the blog: https://fromtailorswithlove.co.uk/about
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Loretta Swit, Legendary Actress, Artist and Animal Welfare Activist About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest is Loretta Swit, legendary actress, artist, humanitarian and animal welfare activist who rose to international acclaim for her iconic portrayal of quick-witted, sensuous, and yet sensitive Major Margaret “Hotlips” Houlihan for 11 seasons on the most honoured television series of all time, MASH, for which she won 2 Emmy awards. She's also known for her performances on stage in “The Odd Couple”, “Same Time Next Year”, “Mame”, “Shirley Valentine”, “The Vagina Monologues” and many more. She starred in many TV movies including “Hell Hath No Fury”, “The Hostage Heart”, “Mirror Mirror”, “A Killer Among Friends”, THREE Christmas movies, and my all-time favourite, “The Execution”. Her wildlife series, “Those Incredible Animals”, was shown twice weekly on the Discovery Channel for an amazing 5-year run, and aired in over 30 countries. She's worked with everyone from Susan Hayward to Julie Andrews, Cliff Robertson, Patty Duke, James Caan, Alan Arkin and of course, the beloved cast of MASH. Her list of accolades is staggering. She's received a People's Choice Award, The Genie Award, The Silver Satellite Award, The Sarah Siddons Award, The Jean Golden Halo Award, the Pacific Broadcasters Award, 10 Emmy nominations and 2 Emmy awards, 4 Golden Globe nominations, AND she most recently received her THIRD Lifetime Achievement Award. And for her animal activism, she's been named Woman of the Year by both the Animal Protection Institute and the International Fund For Animal Welfare. She's received the Advocate for Farm Animals Award, the Compassion in Action Award, the Westminster Animal Welfare & Leadership Award; the International Red Cross Humanitarian Award, the Global Wildlife Conservation Champion Award, and The Betty White Award from Actors and Others for Animals. And if that weren't enough, she's an extremely gifted artist, and most recently, she's released a book entitled, “SwitHeart: The Watercolour Artistry & Animal Activism of Loretta Swit”, chronicling her work as an artist and activist. AND, she's released her wonderful new fragrance called “Swit-heart”. Proceeds from the sale of her book go to her non-profit foundation, the “Swit-heart Animal Alliance.” And the perfume is ONLY available to people who donate to the Foundation, with all proceeds going to the all-important cause of ending animal neglect, suffering and cruelty.

In this episode, Jeannette talks to Ann Marie Woodall – The High-Heeled Healer. She explains how she came to understand why she repeated negative behaviours and how she learned to break them. To make changes that greatly improved her life and inspired her to help others to do the same. They discuss how the belief systems you learn, often as a child, can hold you back if you let them. She shares how to examine them and decide which ones need to change to enable you to live a full life. Anne Marie also talks about her cancer diagnosis and the alternative path she is using to live a full life despite the disease. KEY TAKEAWAYS Everyone is gifted. We each have something different and special to offer. Sharing your gifts helps others and enables you to grow, so share yours. Once you know that even bad things happen for a reason it is easier to recover and rebuild. Examine your belief systems to bring the power back to yourself. Are all of your belief systems true? Do they still work for you? Have you let one of your belief systems exert too much pressure and distort how you live? Regardless of the culture, you come from, everything still goes back to family and relationships. Abandonment, judgement, guilt, and pain zap your energy and make you smaller. Learning to let go and move on reverses that process. When you take the right approach, within 2 weeks things will change dramatically. Be receptive to help. There is always someone there with the right word and support. Fasting is powerful and has the potential to help you to heal. Don't run away, just work on yourself. BEST MOMENTS ‘Everyone´s gifted. ´ ‘I'm used to losing and starting. It doesn't matter cuz you're always learning something new.' ‘Everyone´s got different belief systems. Go back to that and ask is it true, does it work?' ‘Every day is a good day. Don't ever give up.' ‘F.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk. You’ll recognize yourself in these true-life stories from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference these journeys have made. I’m your host, Diane Wyzga. Welcome back to Part 2 of the podcast interview with my guest Dafna Gold Melchior who joined us from Jerusalem, Israel. Dafna is a clarifier. As a clarifier Dafna teaches researchers and entrepreneurs how to sharpen their message and communicate with clarity so they are prepared to clearly and concisely speak about the value of their work to high stakes audiences. As an entrepreneur herself who is striving for a global client base I asked Dafna, “How do your clients find you? Let’s hear what she has to say about this very vital building block for any enterprise as well as becoming a podcaster, reaching for the almost impossible, and the bold shift into her professional dreams. Minutes 39:2400:00 to 2:01 Intro2:01 to 6:10 Let’s Clarify It!, Growing Global Client Base + Tips: Being of VALUEQ: How do your clients find you?Predominantly, word of mouthCold calling is not effective; no one likes to be contacted out of the blue with no contextDafna reaches out to her network Networking respectfully and effectively is to lead with those who know the value of her workGet the introduction from someone who knows you and your work and the outcomesTestimonials from clients who know you and your work is the seal of approval, lowers the risk and shortens the trust buildingDevelop a regular body of work (blog, podcast, YouTube) that people can experience, learn from, get value from and build from that“I did this and I did that and I am so fabulous!” is a complete and utter waste of someone’s timeNot wanting to take up someone’s valuable time has been an internal hurdle as Dafna strives to demonstrate her unique value and how to show that to the worldIf you don’t share with people what you do and how you do it, you are being selfishWhen you hold back something valuable you might never know who you could have helped and how.Our teachers and mentors influence us in unexpected ways; in ways we ourselves might not recognize until years or decades laterWho am I to keep my content, my skill set from the public?Social media platforms can get so crowded with trash and noise that it’s impressed on Dafna: when you ask someone for their time and attention (a valuable resource) it had better be a worthy ask and be of value to them!6:10 to 10:25 ValueValue is what Dafna intends to give by way of her new podcast, Let's ClarifyIt!, which launched since last we spokeDafna lucky to join the Akimbo Podcasting Fellowship (now Podcasting Workshop) - loved radio medium - podcasting is new radioDid not have concept; just wanted to learn technical sideAs soon as COVID hit Dafna knew she could create a podcast around working remotely; created Remotely Effective and aired 13 episodes in a few weeksThan what? Dafna felt she had exhausted the topic but her Ah Ha!: “I’m not the Working Remotely Girl; I’m the Message Clarifying Girl! So! Decided that if her podcast subject matter was aligned with her professional work and passion it should be of value and a hit bothAudience can feel podcaster’s authentic excitement when you are on pointDafna created her one big podcast: Let’s Clarify It! which is exactly the same name as her website, as her brand - it’s all out there now!Package concept: host-on-mic with tips on how to sharpen your message plus interview guests who can share own insights about the value of clear messaging plus invite other communication experts to discuss insights on clarity of messageHost adds WOW! Which is shorthand for simply amazing work!!!10:25 to 14:15 Pivot to ProfessionalHost: We do not pivot into something wonderful - as guest described - from a place of wonderful; the pivot happens from something nudging us along the way whether concerns, reflections, hiccups; and such. Curious to know how these past times of hashing out thoughts and trying this and discarding prepared you for being where you are today.Q: What’s the journey been like as you’ve hashed out thoughts and reflections and Ah Ha! Moments along the way?Dafna was not prompted by crisis; but as youngest child has grown up is now able - after 21 years - to see her professional trajectory on its own and not through the lens of motherhoodDafna can now prioritize her professional work in the worldIn Dafna’s case this is a coming of age and stage for herOn one hand the every day is simpler with older children but the issues older children are dealing with still require hands-on parentingDafna is still a very hands-on parent and time is such that now she can devote more time to where she is going professionallyFor Dafna a suppressed hunger is now wide open and bubbling with possibility14:15 to 17:00 Growing InternationallyDafna exploring how to take her work (Let's Clarify It!) internationalHas created a strong presence in Israel; how to branch out with what I do for Israeli researchers and entrepreneurs and and offer it to British researchers and entrepreneurs?Bucket List: How do I turn what I’m doing into an international practice?Online platforms have leveled playing field remotelyCOVID is coming to an end in IsraelIsrael - as the start up nation with world-changing innovationDafna feels privileged to be Israeli: the strongest tool is collaboration; it’s all about the inter and the multi-disciplinaryOn every level the questions being asked: what is the benefit, what are you doing, how will it be more just, more accessible, more something than the way we’re doing it now? When you ask people to change, to be different you better be very clear about the benefit for THEM!Dafna is honored to help as a game-changer on global stage!17:00 to 23:00 TIPS for Becoming an EntrepreneurHost: For those who are considering changing, to becoming an entrepreneur, starting their own business what tips to offer based on her experiences and insights - discoveries, learnings, parenting and so on Becoming an entrepreneur: begin with a strong passion to create a product or service that will shift the worldBe very very clear: who is this product/service for and how comeIt’s meant to improve on something that existsBe realistic: processes take time to develop; returns are not immediate or short-termChange in parallel with a job or sort out how will pay the billsAccelerators: find a good quality accelerator program where you could come in with an idea and leave on the other side with basic training as an early stage companyHave a growth mindset such as that based on Carol Dweck’s growth mindset research is super-valuableThe greatest news is: growth mindset can developed and evolved if one is open to seeing an event as a chance, an opportunityWhy Israel is such a start-up nation: cuturally it’s legitimate to responsibly, respectfully make mistakes, sand box it, ask what did I learn from what didn’t work, reverse engineer, apply learnings going forward, start all over again because the process is all legitimate23:00 to 27:18 Reaching for Heights Despite the Odds Host: "Fall down 7 - Get up 8!" is a real way to be in the world. To reach for the odds, take on the challenge because of what you can learn. Dafna recently applied for a Leadership Course because Dafna had the chutzpah (the good kind of audacity).Q: what fired you up to go through the steps come what may?Dafna became ware of a professional network being created across disciplines to advance large-scale global projects requiring industry/academia/government collaboration and bridgingLooking for applicants who are accredited and well-placed in their fields - which Dafna is not - but was intrigued by these movers and shakers who might make an in-house place for her at the table where she could contribute, accelerate, amplify, advance the projects!Humbling to know is not the classic audience but still what’s the harm and you just never know?To Dafna it felt brave and ambitious and stretchy to try (Note to listeners: the application didn’t come though as expected but the reeeeach! is what mattered)27:18 to 31:10 Reaching for the Odds Feels Stretchy and Brave Host: Reaching for the odds feels brave, stretchy, possible, regardless the outcome. Dafna threw her hat in the ring and said, "Let’s go!" And as you tell us the story you add in how something better might ultimately happen. This is a marvelous listen to hear her step out, how it might unfoldDafna shipped the application and felt: "I shipped it; It’s out of my hands; I feel an exhale letting go of the expectation."At the end of the day the experience as of value making the attempt, striving and connecting with her 20-year old self who was the Be All and End All! Who wouldn’t take "No!" For an answerThere is something about having the chutzpah to give it a go; the chances are slim but go for it anywayDafna feels like she is coming back into her own allowing herself to occupy her own space which is legitimateNow it’s about what Dafna wants to do; what are my aspirations? How do I connect with a girl with really big dreams and shooting for them?31:10 to 33:07 Women Who Put Dreams Aside and Return to ThemWomen around the world probably hear this: I put this dream aside and here I am againShirley Valentine: "The girl who used to be me."When we were younger selves and nothing felt impossibleIs profound and healing for listeners to hear: It is not too late. Sit with Look at your younger self and ask: what do you want to do now? How do you want to live? How should we go forward together?Host: This is the experience that comes with time and finding ourselves perhaps in Middle Earth Age.Now it is Dafna’s time - which is going to be something to sit back and say WOW!!!33:07 to 39:24 LegacyHost: Legacy is a heavy word and Dafna sees herself as too young. Q: As we sit here today what would you like to see happen in the world as a result of the work you’re doing connecting people, communicating, podcasting ideas, and so onDafna would like to see more opportunities realized thanks to people being able to communicate very clearly what they are doing, to collaborate, to manifest revolutionary ideas to heal the world and populationsA great privilege to be part of those experiencesIntends to continue helping professionals connect and partner to manifest products and services that will help and healAim: repairing earlier human-caused problems, environmental innovations, healing, goodness, people being able to live good healthy lives, have access and opportunities to what they need to contributeHost: Before I say thank you I want to mention that all social media links and connections to Dafna’s podcast and website will be posted in the Episode Notes. I gently help them become aware of where there may be comprehension and interpretation gaps, using a metaphoric light purple highlighter marker, so that they can communicate more clearly and effectively with their audiences.I specialize in message sharpening with entrepreneurs and academic researchers, helping to craft and articulate their messaging, making their professional information accessible to their specific target audience. Once the message is sharp, they are ready to hone their presentation and delivery skills for any pitch, conference or high stakes opportunity. As a connector, I love introducing people who could be of interest to one another.I grew up in the US then in Israel, served as an officer in the IDF and studied Communications and Political Science at Haifa University and Conflict Research at Hebrew University. That's Coming TO America, not Coming TWO America. Though we cover them both in this past-and-present trip to Zamunda! The winner of our latest audience poll, Coming to America is absolutely having a cultural moment. How well does it hold up 33 years later, and how does it do when viewed back-to-back with its sequel? This week's recommendations: Kahmeela is gripped by ALLEN V FARROW. Robin has to explain what SHIRLEY VALENTINE is, but it sounds lovely. And Sean is mildly positive about YA scifi thingy CHAOS WALKING.
Hey friends! My amazing friend and past client Christina Kam took the brave plunge, and at 44 moved abroad to Greece. Fearless AF! Think Eat, Pray, Love, or a little Shirley Valentine. This podcast gives us all the “starting over is fresh and amazing” feels. Greece is more than a country, it's an experience! Enjoy this epic journey with us! Xoxo, Lori
This episode discusses how betrayal can hollow us out, make us feel empty, lost and without a role to play, or anyway, without the role we used to play as beloved partner. Savvy Girl compares the journey to expanding or relaxing into her new life with the journey Shirley Valentine (1989 film) goes through when discovering that her life has become so small. This episode discusses themes that occur later in the healing process. Stage I is full of panic, shock, grief and disbelief. Stage II brings acute, steady pain and rage. Stage III, the stage this episode speaks to, allows an exhale, and sees a Savvy Girl, while still scared and hurt, willing to glance out her window to begin dreaming of a life larger than the reductive: Savvy Girl who has been betrayed.
All the culinary tools you require for your very own Shirley Valentine, and Greek Island.

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with questions carefully chosen to help you collect stories in the oral tradition or spark your own writing. Either way, you'll say, "Thanks for the memories." Shirley Valentine is a lovely British movie about a housewife from Liverpool looking for a change from what feels like a trap of domestic obligation - like others who have woken up one morning to find their life isn't what they thought it would be.In a moment of poignant reverie Shirley asks, “Why are we given all this life?” I believe it’s a two-fold answer: (1) to play the hand we’re dealt no matter what, and (2) to remember how far we’ve come.Story Prompt: Find yourself a quiet place to sit with your eyes closed and linger on the life you’ve lived remembering how far you’ve come. Write that story. Practical Tip: If you wish share your story with someone or something: your journal, your animal companion, the trees in the woods, your loved one, colleagues, master mind group. All that matters is you play the hand you are dealt and remember how far you've come. This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic. Speaking of magic, would you share a nice rating/review on Apple Podcasts and when you come back bring your friends and rellies. This week, mum is house-sitting while my brother is away, which means she has access to Netflix for the first time in her life. What has she done with this immense new power? On our final episode of this series, Martin McQuillan is joined by legendary playwright, Willy Russell. Taking a trip down memory lane, Willy recalls the horrors of school as a youngster in comparison to the joy he found in going back to education as an adult where he found his passion for writing. Having spent years as a musician, writing lyrics had become part of Willy's life but it wasn't until he went back to night school to study that the world of writing changed everything. "This lovely man treated us all as equals and adults and I remember in the first couple of weeks, he introduced us to Animal Farm - I'd never heard of George Orwell. I went back the next week and he said to the class, "of course, you do know that this book is an allegory," and I was learning to be a bit bolder and I said, "sorry, I don't know what that means". And he said, "well it's a story that's about one thing that is in fact about another. In this case the Russian Revolution right?" Brilliant! I mean, I'd just enjoyed it about pigs and animals, but suddenly understanding completely how it mirrored Orwell's take on what happened with totalitarianism...of course I became the world's biggest bore on Orwell."As we come to the end of series two, we'd like to thank you for your support and look forward to bringing you more guests of The Lonely Arts Club soon.
For the final episode of this first series, Stephen and Brennan talk to former Wag, showbiz reporter, reality contestant and friend of the stars Lizzie Cundy. Her many stories include holidaying with Bruno Tonioli, and meeting Simon Cowell for the first time. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The rabbit that came with candy has come and gone and we're all still left alone in our own thoughts. I think we've all wondered what kind of mom Rachel would have been and she gives us a little glimpse into that thinking. She also gives us a little review of Shirley Valentine some people need to checkout while locked away. Rachel wanted to bring her friend Pritesh Shah on to help talk things through with our isolation. Rachel and Huw talk a few more personal things when it comes to their writing. This week was a little more introspective for the duo. Hopefully this is able to distract you for a little bit this week.
