Potter Revisited Episode #88 Percy Weasley's Boggart AKA Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 28 "The Madness of Mr Crouch" Is this confirmation that Butterbeer is alcoholic?  Winky is so sad, yet none of the House Elves besides Dobby don't seem to have any empathy for her Hermione is sent a bunch of hate mail due to Rita Skeeter's article - shouldn't there be process to check the mail students are sent? Why are adults sending a minor child (at a SCHOOL) hate with curses and dangerous substances?? It the grand scheme of things, if there was a bit of truth to Rita's article - is this amount of hate really necessary?  Hermione has a real strong sense of self for a girl her age - most teens would not be able to handle this with the amount of grace as she does  Hagrid seems to finally hit the sweet spot with teaching - the lesson he plans with the Nifflers is interactive, fun and not overly dangerous  How the Weasley siblings deal with their financial insecurity is all very interesting  Ron internalizes it  The Twins are proactive and work on creating a business  Percy follows in his fathers footsteps and enters the Ministry, and plans to work his way up the corporate ladder Bill and Charlie both take career paths that lead them out of the country  Rita is not ready for the wrath Hermione has coming for her  It is disappointing how Mrs Weasley is treating Hermione - why does she believe this article when she knows how Rita Skeeter is?  Does the way Mrs Weasley treat the boys VS the girls show a character flaw?  Percy sends his letter regarding Mr Crouch and he is not pleased  Viktor pulls Harry aside for a private word - this would have been such a great scene for the film  Why does Snape stop Harry when it is obviously an emergency? + 1 Sucks point  Karkaroff does have a point from his perspective - this tournament is very suspicious Is this the first time we really see Hagrid's rage?  Is it odd hearing very negative and prejudice talk from Hagrid, who is generally very open and friendly  Its unfortunate the Mr Crouch plotline with pretty much cut from the films - this would have been a great dramatic scene after the comic relief of Harry and Krum's talk  Seeing Mr Crouch like this would be Percy's boggart  Lots of foreshadowing from Crouch  Snape Sucks total for Chapter 28: 1 Email any thoughts, questions or feedback to potterrevisitedpodcast@gmail.com Music: Shelter Song by Alexander Nakarada (www.serpentsoundstudios.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Follow Us:  Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/potterrevisited Twitter https://twitter.com/potterevisited Instagram https://www.instagram.com/potterrevisited_/ Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4v2Xt0OIQ8_LCVYhKf2S5A TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@potterrevisited

Be sure to check out Episode 449 for our prior Chapter 13 analysis! Could there be a common theme running through the Chapter 13s of the Harry Potter series? Main Discussion #1: Radical Hermione Spin Cycle: Have the hosts ever gotten caught up in the news and believed something that turned out to be false? Why is Umbridge allowed to teach the students during their O.W.L.s year? Could Hermione be working smarter, not harder, by threatening to write to Mrs. Weasley about Fred & George? We debate the ethics of them testing products on first years! And did the Twins drug Hermione later in the chapter? Should Hermione be tricking House-Elves into freedom by hiding knitted hats beneath bits of rubbish? Would she even have the authority to free the Hogwarts House-Elves? Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff Unite: Luna and Ernie show support for Harry! Main Discussion #2: Detention Our initial reactions to one of the most cringe-worthy moments in the Harry Potter series! How is The Black Quill legal? Does it have any relation to the Quick Quotes Quill? Why is Harry suffering in silence? Could past abuse and trauma be at play? How much is Dumbledore to blame for Harry's resistance to go to an authority figure? We discuss the significance of Umbridge giving Harry his second permanent scar! Quidditch Tryouts: is Ron a nepo baby? When Umbridge touches Harry, his scar burns. Should we assume she's connected to Voldemort or was this pure coincidence? Odds & Ends cover Hagrid's absence, McGonagall's confidence in Neville, angry bowtruckles and more! MVP: What would we have thought if we'd been onlookers at the Third Task in Goblet of Fire and seen Harry return from the maze clutching Cedric's dead body? Lynx Line: Our patrons weigh in on what they would do to resist the Umbridge regime at Hogwarts. Quizzitch: In this chapter, Harry is tasked with completing an illustration of a Bowtruckle. Potter Revisited Episode #81 Barmy Old Codger AKA Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 21 "The House-Elf Liberation Front" Ron is acting super enthusiastic to make it up to Harry - something he also does in DH Love that Harry gave Sirius a full play-by-play on the first task  Ron just spoils Harry's surprise party and no one says anything?  How do the other houses throw parties? Dean is the only one that really has a hobby  Harry opens the egg and Neville thinks it's the cruciatus curse - lots of foreshadowing hints about Neville's past and also Harry does have the curse used on him later on  Fred and George's canary creams are such advanced magic  Hermione trying to manipulate F&G to tell her about the kitchens is fun  Are the students getting drunk off the whisky fumes Hagrid set out for the Beauxbaton horses?  How is Rita able to just get onto the grounds when she was banned? This is a school! How does Hogwarts monitor visitors?  Should Harry just told Hagrid to not do anything with Rita even if it was rude? Dobby is at Hogwarts!  Its very cool seeing Dobby again and how he is handling being a free elf, compared to Winky who is miserable  Winky let's slip that Crouch thinks Bagman is a bad wizard - we are getting lot of different hints about potential "bad guys" that through us off the real villain of this book  Ron offers Dobby his christmas jumper - but wouldn't Mrs Weasley just make Dobby his own sweater if asked? We as Canadians try and figure out how pies fit in pockets  Percy is ragged on a lot in this chapter for not being able to take a joke / being a stick in the mud. He isn't even present!  It is interesting seeing how the other House Elves seem wary of Dobby  Has the SPEW plot aged well? It does get hard to read Hermione constantly being put down by everyone despite being right Snape Sucks total for Chapter 21: 0 Email any thoughts, questions or feedback to potterrevisitedpodcast@gmail.com Music: Shelter Song by Alexander Nakarada (www.serpentsoundstudios.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Follow Us:  Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/potterrevisited Twitter https://twitter.com/potterevisited Instagram https://www.instagram.com/potterrevisited_/ Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4v2Xt0OIQ8_LCVYhKf2S5A TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@potterrevisited

SERIES 3 EPISODE 27: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Donald Ducks out of another debate – while inadvertently confirming he lost the last one. The self-destruction of the Trump campaign and fascist political machine – so thorough and unexpected that it looks intentional – has escalated. They used to be evil and clever; now they are evil and stupid. This happened moments after a little-noticed tweet resurfaced from one of his House Elves, Congressman Mike Collins of Georgia. As the debate ended Tuesday night Collins had written “You want to know who won? Find out who refuses to do a second debate.” Literally within minutes… Trump refused to do a second debate. So burnt out that he RE-USED a line from Wednesday, Trump posted at 3:08 eastern yesterday, “When a prizefighter loses a fight, the first words out of his mouth are ‘I want a rematch.' Polls clearly show that I won the debate…” They didn't; but of course were Trump to admit this, I suspect he would die. I mean this literally; if he somehow acknowledged his utter failure, the violent self-destruction of his entire ecosystem would be so damaging that he could no longer exist. So blah blah; confuses political asylum with mental asylums again, again contradicts himself by noting that HE insisted on a second debate with Biden, tries to take the one glimmer of an impact he made during his closing statement about problems not solved during this presidency, then, in all caps so you know he's especially crazy, quote, “THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE!” PLUS: Harris up by FIVE in Morning Consult polls and Nate Silver does something useful: explains why her Debate Bump may not happen for days or weeks. Panic and infighting in the Trump campaign as Lindsey Graham joins Marjorie Taylor Greene in the bid to break up Trump and his newest crush, Laura "Acting Melania" Loomer. A new journalistic outlet has the full backstory of the "Migrants Eating Cats" nonsense and surprisingly enough all the sources are fourth-hand. And how do you make another January 6th impossible? Make it as difficult to get around DC ON January 6th as it is to get around NYC during the UN General Assembly, and even Thump's thugs will give up in frustration and go the F home. B-Block (21:03) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Trump lawyer who defended separating immigrant families at the border insists you can't separate families for the 35 seconds it takes to put the supermarket shopping cart back in the rack. Fox's Rachel Campos-Duffy assumes that because Linsey Davis and Kamala Harris were in the same sorority 14 years apart there's a conspiracy. And the mask falls off: Trump Bigot-In-Chief Stephen Miller gets eaten alive by an immigrant, who gets Miller to confirm he believes Venezuelan Dictator Nicolas Maduro. C-Block (36:43) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: As brilliant and subtle an insight into a writer's mind as Thurber ever offered. You'd never notice unless I mentioned it, but watch how his imagination could turn a casual overheard remark into a marvelous, self-satirizing, comedic spy story in "The Lady On 142."  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chapter 6 - The PortkeyINTRO - Character impressions in your mind.Harry felt as though he had barely lain down to sleep in Ron's room when he was being shaken awake by Mrs Weasley.Q1 - Is this the worst feeling ever? Non-snow days? What is the worst feeling as a kid?Q2 - You need a license to Apparate? Do you think anything else should require a license in the magical world?Q3 - What's the earliest you've ever woken up?[Portkeys are] objects that are used to transport wizards from one spot to another at a prearranged time.Q4 - Would you rather travel by broom, apparition, or portkey?Q5 - Amos Diggory works for the department of the regulation and control of magical creatures…did he vote yes to killing buckbeak?“I'm sure Harry'd say the same, wouldn't you, eh? One falls off his broom, one stays on, you don't need to be a genius to tell which one's the better flier.”Q6 - How do you like Amos and Cedric?Q7 - Thoughts on the wizarding world spreading trash around the planet in the form of portkeys?Chapter 7 - Bagman and CrouchQ1 - If you had to hide a quidditch world cup game, how would you do it?“Been having a lot of trouble with him. Needs a Memory Charm ten times a day to keep him happy. And Ludo Bagman's not helping. Trotting around talking about Bludgers and Quaffles at the top of his voice, not a worry about anti-Muggle security.”Q2 - How should they deal with Mr Roberts…should some Muggles just be able to know about Wizards?“Always the same.” said Mr Weasley, smiling, “we can't resist showing off when we get together.”Q3 - How do you like the magic of expanding something like the tent into being massive inside? It was only just dawning on Harry how many witches and wizards there must be in the world; he had never really thought much about those in other countries.Q4 - How large do you figure the wizarding world is? Q5 - There's a description of all sorts of other witches and wizards here, if you could travel to see magic from any other country in the world, where would you go visit?“I'm not putting them on [referring to the trousers],” said Old Archie in indignation. “I like a healthy breeze around my privates, thanks.”Harry laughed but didn't voice the amazement he felt at hearing about other Wizarding schools. He supposed, now that he saw representatives of so many nationalities in the campsite, that he had been stupid never to realize that Hogwarts couldn't be the only one.“That's Bode and Croaker…they're unspeakables.” “They're what?” “From the department of mysteries, top secret, no idea what they get up to.”Q6 - What do you think they do in the Department of Mysteries?Q7 - How do you like Bagman and Crouch? Which do you like more?“Ali Bashir's on the warpath. He wants a word with you about your embargo on flying carpets.” Mr Weasley heaved a deep sigh. “I sent him an owl about that just last week. If I've told him once I've told him a hundred times: carpets are defined as a Muggle Artifact by the Registry of Proscribed Charmable Objects, but will he listen?”Q8 - Broom or Carpet?A sense of excitement rose like a palpable cloud over the campsite as the afternoon wore on. By dusk, the still summer air itself seemed to be quivering with anticipation, and as darkness spread like a curtain over the thousands of waiting wizards, the last vestiges of pretense disappeared: the Ministry seemed to have bowed to the inevitable and stopped fighting the signs of blatant magic now breaking out everywhere.Q9 - Harry gets Ron omnioculars…is he cheap for saying he won't get anything for him for Christmas? And then a deep, booming gong sounded somewhere beyond the woods, and, at once, green and red lanterns blazed into life in the trees, lighting a path to the pitch.Chapter 8 - The Quidditch World Cup“Ah, sir,” said Winky, shaking her head, “ah, sir, meaning no disrespect, sir, but I is not sure you did Dobby a favor, sir, when you is setting him free.”Q1 - What do you think of House Elves? Should they be set free?Q2 - Do you think it's cruel to have a house elf sit at the booth who is afraid of heights just to save a seat? She would have been nice looking if she hadn't been wearing a look that suggested there was a nasty smell under her nose.Q3 - What are your thoughts on the Veela and the Leprechauns? Q4 - What would the American mascot be?Q5 - What do you think of Victor Krum?Q6 - Would you want to go to this game?Q7 - Was Krum an idiot for ending the game when they were down too much?Chapter 9 - The Dark Mark“Get up! Ron — Harry — come on now, get up, this is urgent!” Harry sat up quickly and the top of his head hit canvas. “S'matter?” he said. Dimly. He could tell that something was wrong. The noises in the campsite had changed. The singing had stopped. He could hear screams, and the sound of people running.Q1 - Have you ever been in a riot or a situation this scary?Q2 - What do you think of these masked people's actions? The colored lanterns that had lit the path to the stadium had been extinguished. Dark figures were blundering through the trees; children were crying; anxious shouts and panicked voices were reverberating around them in the cold night air. Harry felt himself being pushed hither and thither by people whose faces he could not see. Then he heard Ron yell with pain.Q3 - Do you think Lucious might be out there among the masked people?Q4 - How many magical schools do you think there are?A rustling noise nearby made all three of them jump. Winky the house-elf was fighting her way out of a clump of bushes nearby. She was moving in a most peculiar fashion, apparently with great difficulty; it was as though someone invisible were trying to hold her back.Q5 - Do you think Harry is right, that Winky is just disobeying, or do you think she was cursed?Q6 - Do you think Stan Shunpike would ever become minister of magic? And would he do better than Fudge?Q7 - What do you think Bagman was doing deep in the woods? Do you trust him?For a split second, Harry thought it was another leprechaun formation. Then he realized that it was a colossal skull, comprised of what looked like emerald stars, with a serpent protruding from its mouth like a tongue. As they watched, it rose higher and higher, blazing in a haze of greenish smoke, etched against the black sky like a new constellation. Suddenly, the wood all around them erupted with screams. Harry didn't understand why, but the only possible cause was the sudden appearance of the skull, which had now risen high enough to illuminate the entire wood like some grisly neon sign. He scanned the darkness for the person who had conjured the skull, but he couldn't see anyone.Q8 - What do you think of the Dark Mark?Q9 - Do you think Crouch is good at his job or is he mad?"Here, look. " Mr. Diggory held up a wand and showed it to Mr. Weasley. "Had it in her hand. So that's clause three of the Code of Wand Use broken, for a start. No non-human creature is permitted to carry or use a wand."Q10 - Are wizards right to restrict wand usage to just humans?Q11 - What are your thoughts on Amos Diggory's interrogation style?Q12 - What do you think of the Prior Incantato spell?Q13 - What do you think of Mr Crouch and Winky's relationship?"Of course it's not Him," said Mr. Weasley impatiently. "We don't know who it was; it looks like they Disapparated. Now excuse me, please, I want to get to bed.”"I don't get it," said Ron, frowning. "I mean. . . it's still only a shape in the sky. . . " "Ron, You-Know-Who and his followers sent the Dark Mark into the air whenever they killed," said Mr. Weasley. "The terror it inspired. . . you have no idea, you're too young. Just picture coming home and finding the Dark Mark hovering over your house, and knowing what you're about to find inside. . . . " Mr. Weasley winced. "Everyone's worst fear. . . the very worst. . . " There was silence for a moment. Then Bill, removing the sheet from his arm to check on his cut, said, "Well, it didn't help us tonight, whoever conjured it. It scared the Death Eaters away the moment they saw it. They all Disapparated before we'd got near enough to unmask any of them. We caught the Robertses before they hit the ground, though. They're having their memories modified right now. " "Death Eaters?" said Harry. "What are Death Eaters?" "It's what You-Know-Who's supporters called themselves," said Bill. "I think we saw what's left of them tonight - the ones who managed to keep themselves out of Azkaban, anyway. "Q14 - Who do you think actually conjured the Dark Mark?Q15 - What do you think of the Death Eaters?

It's our final episode of 2023, but don't fret because we'll be releasing a couple of bonus segments over the break! Chapter-by-Chapter continues with Goblet of Fire, Chapter 9: The Dark Mark 7-Word Summary: Winky struggles to explain herself to Crouch Main Discussion #1: Death Eaters & The Dark Mark Death Eaters & Terrorism: Voldemort's followers use the Quidditch World Cup celebration to cause mass hysteria The Death Eaters are dressed in hooded cloaks with masks, and are marching in a clan-like formation. We discuss similarities to the KKK here in the United States. We react to the torture of the Roberts family and exactly what Draco suggested be done to Hermione The Dark Mark & the Swastika: Both marks inspire fear and convey hatred. As an adult that lived through Voldemort's reign, what must it have been like to see the Dark Mark return? Hermione is the only one of the trio who understands the gravity of the Dark Mark. What does this say about the wizarding world's ability to insulate their children from the terror that Voldemort inflicted on the wizarding world? Was the Dark Mark cast to inspire fear in those at the Quidditch World Cup or in the Death Eaters themselves? Main Discussion #2: The Conviction of Winky & The Treatment of House-Elves Winky is found at the scene of the crime and is unjustly accused (and convicted).  Similar to other situations we've experienced with Ministry justice, much of the real evidence is ignored! Our eyes are opened even further to the treatment of House-Elves by the larger wizarding world How has Hermione growing up in the Muggle world informed her views on House-Elves? Do we attribute Ron's views to immaturity or his own upbringing? Hermione begins her outspoken criticism of the Ministry! Evanesco That returns as Andrew lays waste to all of the  he-said-she-said-elf-said back-and-forth, blah, blah, blah in this chapter! Odds & Ends cover Fred & George's winnings, Beauxbatons, Madam Maxime, Stan Shunpike, Priori Incantato and more! Quizzitch: What did Rita Skeeter once call Bill Weasley in an interview with Gringotts curse-breakers? The Quidditch World Cup is a security nightmare! (Are you really surprised?) Give the gift of MuggleCast merch to you and yours! Chapter-by-Chapter continues with Goblet of Fire, Chapter 8: The Quidditch World Cup 7-Word Summary: Athletes compete vigorously against their formidable opponents Main Discussion #1: House-Elves return! Harry thinks he sees Dobby. But how exactly does Winky know Dobby? Are Dobby's ideas of being paid for his work too radical, or is Winky too conservative or downtrodden? And why is it a bad thing that Dobby remains free? We also get a reunion of sorts between Lucius and Arthur. What is this chapter trying to tell us about class differences in the Wizarding World? Main Discussion #2: The Veela are DANGEROUS! Right after first seeing them, Harry almost jumps out of the Top Box! How are they allowed? The Veela are of Slavic origin and may have roots in Greek myths; we explore. Are the Veela more like modern cheerleaders in their purpose, or are they emblematic of something else? Both team's mascots should be banned in the future, we consider. Quizzitch: From which book does Hermione learn about Beauxbatons Academy of Magic? Coming up in Bonus MuggleCast, we review the biggest events in fandom of 2023 and look ahead to 2024! Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing house elves, an often-overlooked species of magical beings from within the wizarding world. Specifically, we're going to be diving in to their origins- taking a look at where they came from and how they got to be in the position that they're in today. House elves have been an integral part of wizarding society for centuries, serving as loyal companions and helpers to wizarding families. But what's interesting is that we're never actually fed much info on their history. Did house elves precede the existence of witches and wizards? When did house elves first come to be? What inspired JK Rowling to create them? Why do they SERVE? And just how did they evolve into such an essential aspect of the wizarding world? I also want to examine how House elves were used to symbolize deeper themes of social justice, equality, and the ethics of servitude. Hopefully, through our examination of their history, we'll uncover the powerful messages J.K. Rowling intended to convey through highlighting the mistreatment of an entire species marginalized in society. Without further ado, let's dive in. Learn more about your ad choices.  Chapter 13 - Detention with DoloresQ1 - Why do you think Dumbledore hired Dolores Jane Umbridge?Q2 - They are writing an essay on moonstones…do you think this will play into the future somehow?ʹBowtruckles,ʹ said Hermione. Theyʹre tree guardians, usually live in wand-trees. ʹFive points for Gryffindor,ʹ said Professor Grubbly-Plank. ʹQ3 - How rigged is the point system?Q4 - What direction do you hope the books go in? What has interested you the most at this point? The door of the nearest greenhouse opened and some fourth years spilled out of it, including Ginny. ʹHi,ʹ she said brightly as she passed. A few seconds later, Luna Lovegood emerged, trailing behind the rest of the class, a smudge of earth on her nose, and her hair tied in a knot on the top of her head. When she saw Harry, her prominent eyes seemed to bulge excitedly and she made a beeline straight for him. Many of his classmates turned curiously to watch. Luna took a great breath and then said, without so much as a preliminary hello, ʹI believe He Who Must Not Be Named is back and I believe you fought him and escaped from him.ʹQ5 - Harry's story is becoming a conspiracy theory…do you believe any conspiracy theories?Q6 - What do you think of Umbridge and her detention with Harry?Q7 - If you had a detention with a student, what would you have them do?ʹAt least itʹs only lines,ʹ said Hermione consolingly, as Harry sank back on to his bench and looked down at his steak and kidney pie, which he no longer fancied very much. ʹItʹs not as if itʹs a dreadful punishment, really…ʺ  Harry opened his mouth, closed it again and nodded. He was not really sure why he was not telling Ron and Hermione exactly what was happening in Umbridgeʹs room: he only knew that he did not want to see their looks of horror; that would make the whole thing seem worse and therefore more difficult to face. He also felt dimly that this was between himself and Umbridge, a private battle of wills, and he was not going to give her the satisfaction of hearing that he had complained about it.Q8 - Would you stand true like Harry, or fake that she made her point? She moved towards him, stretching out her short ringed fingers for his arm. And then, as she took hold of him to examine the words now cut into his skin, pain seared, not across the back of his hand, but across the scar on his forehead. At the same time, he had a most peculiar sensation somewhere around his midriff.Q9 - Why did his scar hurt here?Chapter 14 - Percy and PadfootQ1 - How do Hogwarts students do their laundry?Q2 - How many house elves do you think Hermione has freed?Harryʹs insides reinflated so rapidly he felt as though he might actually float a few inches off the dropping-strewn floor. Who cared about a stupid flying horse; Cho thought he had been really brave. For a moment, he considered accidentally- on-purpose showing her his cut hand as he helped her tie her parcel on to her owl… but the very instant this thrilling thought occurred, the Owlery door opened again.Q3 - What's the most you've tried to show off to someone you had a crush on?Q4 - What is the deal with Sturgis Podmore?Q5 - Who do you think will win the Quidditch cup this year? From something the Minister let slip when telling me you are now a prefect, I gather that you are still seeing a lot of Harry Potter. I must tell you, Ron, that nothing could put you in danger of losing your badge more than continued fraternization with that boy. Yes, I am sure you are surprised to hear this no doubt you will say that Potter has always been Dumbledoreʹs favorite — but I feel bound to tell you that Dumbledore may not be in charge at Hogwarts much longer and the people who count have a very different and probably more accurate view of Potterʹs behavior. I shall say no more here, but if you look at the Daily Prophet.Q6 - What does Percy mean here?Q7 - Do you think Dumbledore will be sacked by the end of this? And I do hope, Ron, that you will not allow family ties to blind you to the misguided nature of our parentsʹ beliefs and actions, either. I sincerely hope that, in time, they will realize how mistaken they were and I shall, of course, be ready to accept a full apology when that day comes.ʹHermione, you are honestly the most wonderful person Iʹve ever met,ʹ said Ron weakly, ʹand if Iʹm ever rude to you againʹ‐ Iʹll know youʹre back to normal,ʹ said Hermione. ʹHarry, yours is OK except for this bit at the end, I think you must have misheard Professor Sinistra, Europaʹs covered in ice, not mice Harry?ʹQ8 - Harry thought a moon was covered in mice…ʹYes, but the world isnʹt split into good people and Death Eaters,ʹ said Sirius with a wry smile. ʹI know sheʹs a nasty piece of work, though — you should hear Remus talk about her.ʹ ʹFudge thinks Dumbledore will stop at nothing to seize power. Heʹs getting more paranoid about Dumbledore by the day. Itʹs a matter of time before he has Dumbledore arrested on some trumped up charge.ʹ There was a pause in which Sirius looked out of the fire at Harry, a crease between his sunken eyes. ʹYouʹre less like your father than I thought,ʹ he said finally, a definite coolness in his voice. The risk wouldʹve been what made it fun for James.ʹ Q9 - What do you think of what Sirius said?Chapter 15 - The Hogwarts High InquisitorQ1 - What do you think of Umbridge's appointment as High Inquisitor?Q2 - What do you think of the article in the Prophet?O - OutstandingE - Exceed ExpectationsA - AcceptableP - PoorD - Dreadful T - TrollQ3 - What do you think about the OWL grading system?Q4 - Do you feel bad for Trelawney here?Q5 - Do you think any teacher will get fired?ʹYes?ʹ said Professor McGonagall, turning round, her eyebrows so close together they seemed to form one long, severe line. ʹI was just wondering, Professor, whether you received my note telling you of the date and time of your inspec—ʹ  ʹObviously I received it, or I would have asked you what you are doing in my classroom,ʹ said Professor McGonagall, turning her back firmly on Professor Umbridge. Many of the students exchanged looks of glee. ʹAs I was saying: today, we shall be practicing the altogether more difficult Vanishment of mice. Now, the Vanishing Spell.ʹSheʹs an awful woman,ʹ said Hermione in a small voice. ʹAwful. You know, 1 was just saying to Ron when you came in… weʹve got to do something about her.ʹ  ʹI suggested poison,ʹ said Ron grimly.Hermione heaved a very deep sigh. ʹIsnʹt it obvious?ʹ she said. ʹIʹm talking about you, Harry.ʹ Q6 - Do you think Harry would be a good teacher?ʹYou donʹt know what itʹs like! You neither of you youʹve never had to face him, have you? You think itʹs just memorizing a bunch of spells and throwing them at him, like youʹre in class or something? The whole time youʹre sure you know thereʹs nothing between you and dying except your own your own brain or guts or whatever like you can think straight when you know youʹre about a nanosecond from being murdered, or tortured, or watching your friends die theyʹve never taught us that in their classes, what itʹs like to deal with things like that and you two sit there acting like Iʹm a clever little boy to be standing here, alive, like Diggory was stupid, like he messed up — you just donʹt get it, that could just as easily have been me, it would have been if Voldemort hadnʹt needed me. ʹReparo,ʹ Harry muttered, pointing his wand at the broken pieces of china. They flew back together, good as new, but there was no returning the Murtlap essence to the bowl. He was suddenly so tired he was tempted to sink back into his armchair and sleep there, but instead he forced himself to his feet and followed Ron upstairs. His restless night was punctuated once more by dreams of long corridors and locked doors and he awoke next day with his scar prickling again.Q7 - Unpack line above.

Chapter 1 - Dudley DementedThe hottest day of the summer so far was drawing to a close and a drowsy silence lay over the large, square houses of Privet Drive . . . The only person left outside was a teenage boy who was lying flat on his back in a flowerbed outside number four.Q1 - What do you think of Mrs Figg?Every day this summer had been the same: the tension, the expectation, the temporary relief, and then mounting tension again … and always, growing more insistent all the time, the question of why nothing had happened yet.Q2 - Why hasn't anything happened yet?He had moved about two inches when several things happened in very quick succession. A loud, echoing crack broke the sleepy silence like a gunshot; a cat streaked out from under a parked car and flew out of sight; a shriek, a bellowed oath and the sound of breaking china came from the Dursleys' living room, and as though this was the signal Harry had been waiting for he jumped to his feet, at the same time pulling from the waistband of his jeans a thin wooden wand as if he were unsheathing a sword – but before he could draw himself up to full height, the top of his head collided with the Dursleys' open window. The resultant crash made Aunt Petunia scream even louder.Q3 - What is everything that's happening here?Q4 - What do you think of Harry here? What about Ron and Hermione?Q5 - What are Ron and Hermione busy doing? In the meantime, he had nothing to look forward to but another restless, disturbed night, because even when he escaped the nightmares about Cedric he had unsettling dreams about long dark corridors, all finishing in dead ends and locked doors, which he supposed had something to do with the trapped feeling he had when he was awake.Q6 - What is Harry dreaming about here?Harry watched the dark figures crossing the grass and wondered who they had been beating up tonight. Look round, Harry found himself thinking as he watched them. Come on … look round … I'm sitting here all alone … come and have a go …Q7 - Why is Harry thinking this? And what's with his goading of Dudley?Q8 - How did the Dementors get to Harry?Q9 - Why wasn't Harry able to cast the Patronus?Chapter 2 - A Peck of OwlsQ1 - Did you expect Mrs Figg was involved in the wizarding world?Q2 - What are your thoughts on Mundungus Fletcher?'I'll take you to the door,' said Mrs Figg, as they turned into Privet Drive. 'Just in case there are more of them around… oh my word, what a catastrophe… and you had to fight them off yourself… and Dumbledore said we were to keep you from doing magic at all costs… well, it's no good crying over spilt potion, I suppose… but the cat's among the pixies now.' Q3 - Why does Dumbledore want to keep Harry from doing magic at all costs?Q4 - What's a time in your life when your stomach just dropped out of your body?'How many times do I have to tell you?' said Harry, temper and voice both rising. 'It wasn't me! It was a couple of Dementors!' 'A couple of - what's this codswallop?' 'De - men - tors,' said Harry slowly and clearly. 'Two of them.' 'And what the ruddy hell are Dementors?' 'They guard the wizard prison, Azkaban,' said Aunt Petunia. Two seconds of ringing silence followed these words before Aunt Petunia clapped her hand over her mouth as though she had let slip a disgusting swear word. Uncle Vernon was goggling at her. Harrys brain reeled. Mrs Figg was one thing - but Aunt Petunia'? Q5 - How does Petunia know this?Q6 - Why were there Dementors in Little Whinging?Q7 - Does Harry have a right to be this angry?'Back?' whispered Aunt Petunia. She was looking at Harry as she had never looked at him before. And all of a sudden, for the very first time in his life, Harry fully appreciated that Aunt Petunia was his mother's sister. He could not have said why this hit him so very powerfully at this moment. All he knew was that he was not the only person in the room who had an inkling of what Lord Voldemort being back might mean. Aunt Petunia had never in her life looked at him like that before. Her large, pale eyes (so unlike her sister's) were not narrowed in dislike or anger, they were wide and fearful. The furious pretence that Aunt Petunia had maintained all Harry's life - that there was no magic and no world other than the world she inhabited with Uncle Vernon - seemed to have fallen away. 'Yes,' Harry said, talking directly to Aunt Petunia now. 'He came back a month ago. I saw him.' Q8 - What do you think of Aunt Petunia this chapter?Q9 - What do the words “Remember my last, Petunia” mean? Who sent it?Chapter 3 - The Advance GuardQ1 - Is Harry justified to be this angry? So it went on for three whole days. Harry was alternately filled with restless energy that made him unable to settle to anything, during which time he paced his bedroom, furious at the whole lot of them for leaving him to stew in this mess; and with a lethargy so complete that he could lie on his bed for an hour at a time, staring dazedly into space, aching with dread at the thought of the Ministry hearing. Q2 - Do you have more or less sympathy for the Dursleys?Q3 - What do you think of Tonks?Q4 - Do you think Moody is serious about dying trying to fly Harry to safety?Q5 - Why is Harry in such dire danger?Harry looked down at the piece of paper. The narrow handwriting was vaguely familiar. It said: The Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix may be found at number twelve, Grimmauld Place, LondonQ6 - So what is the Order of the Phoenix?

Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the probability of whether or not Santa's elves have any relation to the House Elves that appear throughout Harry Potter. As I'm sure you can appreciate, this is a somewhat complicated topic. First of all, there's an absurd amount of elven lore that has existed over the centuries. Of course, the elves that are rumoured to reside in the North Pole with jolly ol' Saint Nick are just one of many because, of course, elves are a common component of just about any fantastical realm created by novelists. One really doesn't have to think very hard or for very long to come up with a list of books and movies that include this magical species. Lord of the Rings, The Witcher…these are just a couple of the most popular and commonly known series and universes that include an elven people. So, why compare the House Elves of Harry Potter with Santa Claus' elves? Well, in my opinion, there are just one too many similarities between these two sets of elves to ignore. If we are ready to accept that both these creatures exist within the same universe – which I assume we are, since Christmas is acknowledged by the characters of Harry Potter throughout the books and the films, and in a world where magical beings clearly exist, it'd be rather ridiculous to rule out that Santa also exists – so, IF we are ready to accept that both sets of elves exist in the same universe, then it's only logical to assume that they are related, however distantly. Let's start with the obvious. Since, we're not simply comparing these two elven populations in the video – we're actually looking to uncover whether or not they are indeed related, linked, or what have you – that means that we must first establish how Santa, the North Pole, and his elves would fit into the Harry Potter universe and Wizarding World as a whole.

Chapter 11 - Aboard the Hogwarts ExpressQ1 - How do you like the name Mad-Eye?Mrs Weasley took a piece of buttered toast from a stack on the kitchen table, put it into the fire tongs and transferred it into Mr Diggory's mouth.Q2 - have you guys ever had a mountain pie?“Your father thinks very highly of Mad-Eye Moody,” said Mrs Weasley sternly. “Yeah, well Dad collects plugs, doesn't he?” said Fred quietly, as Mrs Weasley left the room. “Birds of a feather.”Q3 - Which is your favorite Weasley?Q4 - What is your favorite part of the books?Q5 - You don't know a ton about Durmstrang and Beauxbatons, but which would you rather go to?“But Hogwarts is hidden,” said Hermione, in surprise, “Everyone who's read Hogwarts: A History, anyway.” “Just you, then,” said Ron. “If a Muggle looks at it, all they see is a moldering old ruin with a sign over the entrance saying DANGER, DO NOT ENTER, UNSAFE.”Q6 - Is this sign keeping you out?Q7 - What do you think of the summoning charm?Q8 - Would you wear Ron's robes?Chapter 12 - The Triwizard TournamentQ1 - Do you like Peeves?Q2 - What's the best prank you ever pulled?“Now slip me snug around your ears, I've never yet been wrong, I'll have a look inside your mind and tell you where you belong!”Q3 - Thoughts on Dennis Creevey?“There are house-elves here?” she said….”Certainly,” said Nearly Headless Nick, looking surprised at her reaction. “The largest number in any dwelling in Britain, I believe. Over a hundred.”Q4 - What are your thoughts on Hogwarts having house elves?A man stood in the doorway, leaning upon a long staff, shrouded in a black traveling cloak. Every head in the Great Hall swiveled toward the stranger, suddenly brightly illuminated by a fork of lightning that flashed across the ceiling. He lowered his hood, shook out a long mane of grizzled, dark gray hair, then began to walk up toward the teachers' table. A dull clunk echoed through the Hall on his every other step. He reached the end of the top table, turned right, and limped heavily toward Dumbledore. Another flash of lightning crossed the ceiling. Hermione gasped. The lightning had thrown the man's face into sharp relief, and it was a face unlike any Harry had ever seen. It looked as though it had been carved out of weathered wood by someone who had only the vaguest idea of what human faces are supposed to look like, and was none too skilled with a chisel. Every inch of skin seemed to be scarred. The mouth looked like a diagonal gash, and a large chunk of the nose was missing. But it was the man's eyes that made him frightening. One of them was small, dark, and beady. The other was large, round as a coin, and a vivid, electric blue. The blue eye was moving ceaselessly, without blinking, and was rolling up, down, and from side to side, quite independently of the normal eye - and then it rolled right over, pointing into the back of the man's head, so that all they could see was whiteness.Q5 - Is this her best description of someone that she's given so far?“It is my pleasure to inform you that the Triwizard tournament will be taking place at Hogwarts this year.” “You're joking!” said Fred Weasley loudly. The tension that had filled the hall every since Moody's arrival suddenly broke. Nearly everyone laughed, and Dumbledore chuckled appreciatively. “I am not joking, Mr Weasley.” he said, “though, now that you mention is, I did hear an excellent one over the summer about a troll, a hag, and a leprechaun who all go into a bar —” Professor McGonagall cleared her throat loudly.Q6 - What are your thoughts on the Triwizard Tournament and what do you think they'll have to do in it?Q7 - Neville falls through a trap step…why does Hogwarts have these?

Q4 - What would the American mascot be?Q5 - What do you think of Victor Krum?Q6 - Would you want to go to this game?Q7 - Was Krum an idiot for ending the game when they were down too much?

Potter Revisited Episode #21 | Weasley Grand Theft Auto Aka Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 3 "The Burrow" Tori reminisces about her house being "The Hub" like the Weasley's when growing up Did Fred and George come because they were concerned about Harry like Ron, or because they wanted to have an adventure? Fred and George are about 14 at the moment - we wonder what the UK driving age is - and how they would even know how to drive a car being Wizards How did no Muggles notice a flying car? Does no one get up for water at 2AM? Fred and George can pick locks - is this in the realm for the Twins' or too convenient?  We discuss how the Twins both have creative brains with how they think, especially for Wizards - which definitly helps them with their future endeavors  Shay brings up how disturbing it feels having the Twins discuss Dobby by who "Owns him" and how it highlights how House Elves are treated in Wizarding society as we view the Weasleys' as "Good" moral characters What kind of Magic do House Elves have? Is it similar to Goblins?  Can we all agree Wizard Society is messed up? The Twins and Harry accurately guess Dobby belongs to The Malfoys - is that too convient of a leap? Why do Mr Weasley's kids not care about his job? It seems very important. Tori compares it to her Dad working as an accountant For someone who writes laws and works for the Government, Mr Weasley takes a lot of risks breaking the laws he writes We discuss our first thoughts about  The Burrow! Shay loves the cozy vibes it gives, and Tori loves the description of a farm house with wacky extensions added on top  Tori questions if all Magical residents have names, like The Burrow, and Shay explains it is likely an English tradition  Does Mrs Weasley constantly comparing the Twins to Percy strain their relationship with him?  We discuss Fred and George's dynamic within the Weasley Family, and the greater Weasley Family dynamic with each other  We get our first glimpse of Ginny! We are both looking forward to see her development that was missed in the films We also appreciate how different Ginny is compared to Hermione Tori's image of The Burrow has changed slightly after learning "Garden" usually means "Backyard" in the UK  We get our first Mundungus Fletcher name drop from Mr Weasley - doing crime as usual Tori compares Ron's love of The Chudley Cannons to Toronto Maple Leaf fans - right comparison or way off?  Shay relates to Ron's blind faith in a sport team, speaking from experience as a Montreal Canadiens fan How did the Weasley's get a Ghoul in the attic? Also good to note Ron claims the Ghoul is useless but it does come in handy during DH Ron seems so worried about Harry's opinion of his house since Ron tends to view not being financially well off as a flaw One of Shay's favourite part of The Burrow is the family clock. How did the Weasley's get it?  Tori theorizes it was made during wartime so Mrs Weasley was able to keep an eye on her loved ones when times were uncertain Did Fred's hand fall off the clock when he died?  Both Tori and Shay are still traumatized by Fred's death. Potter Revisited Episode #20 | Dobby Will Eat Your Skin Off Aka Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 2 "Dobby's Warning" We are finally introduced to House Elves in this chapter - which play a big role in the series, from Dobby, Winky and Kreacher, to Hermione's character development Shay finds Dobby's entrance stressful as this is the worst time for Harry to have his magical world invade his life with The Dursley's Why does Harry have such good manners?  Dobby tells Harry that Voldemort has powers that no decent Wizard would have - Shay wonders if Dobby is aware of the Horcurxes or at least the diary being a Horcrux Harry is the worst at taking compliments  What was Dobby's logic in stopping Harry's letters from being received?  Why was no adult concerned about Harry not responding? #WhyDumbledore Shay mentions it is a federal crime to tamper with someone's mail - would Dobby be sent to Azkaban, or is that a Wizard-Only prison?  Why doesn't Harry just lie to Dobby and say he won't go back to school?  We learn Pudding in the UK = Dessert  Harry receives a letter by owl from the Ministry to tell him off for using Magic in front of Muggles - yet this letter comes by magic, in front of said Muggles??  Is the Ministry not able to detect Magic done by a Wizard vs Magical Creature?  How did Vernon get someone to put bars on Harry's window? Wouldn't it be a fire safety issue? Wouldn't the neighbors talk?  Harry is literally being starved and imprisoned but won't use Magic to save his life because he is too scared to be kicked out of school. All the adults failed him When all the adults fail him, Ron to the rescue Shay says she hates Dobby at the beginning of the book, he causes just too much anxiety  Why did Dobby come to warn Harry?  Dobby is one of the most self-aware House Elves we meet in the series How do House Elves get tied to a family?  We touch a little on the slavery comparison of House Elves, and how the series shows us an outside perspective (Hermione) on how wrong it is, and the perspective of those who are just use to it being that way (Ron, ect) Right off the bat, Harry asks Dobby how he can free him - does he relate to Dobby having to be in a likely abusive household like himself? How does Dobby know about how great Harry and Dumbledore are? The Malfoy's aren't their biggest fans after all... Could Dobby have given Harry a bigger hint that this was a Voldemort plot?  Shay doesn't find Dobby very empathetic to Harry's situation Tori shares the context behind the episode title - involving Potter Puppet Pals We are looking forward to jumping back into the Magical World next chapter and exploring The Burrow! We at Potterversity love house-elves! Join us for our valentine to Dobby, Winky, Kreacher, and Hokey and their persistent relevance for understanding injustice. House-elf fans Emily and Katy talk with Dr. Christine Schott (Erskine College) about how the house-elves keep Harry Potter relevant to social issues today. Given the upheaval this new generation of readers sees in our world, Christine tells us, the Harry Potter stories give us a "training ground" for figuring out how to respond to those problems and complexities. The unsatisfying, unresolved issue of house-elf enslavement leads us to continue thinking about this wizarding world oppression in ways that help us consider persistent injustices in our world. The house-elves can be related to all kinds of oppressed peoples, including those bound in chattel slavery, house-wives (as Katy has argued), immigrant communities, and even artificial intelligence (as Emily has explored). Yet the house-elves' ambivalent portrayal in the Harry Potter series as "happy slaves" makes us uneasy and requires us to examine them more closely. We talk about how the individual house-elves - Dobby, Winky, Kreacher, and Hokey - invite theoretical but also empathetic consideration from us. How do we understand Dobby's sacrifice in the war against Voldemort? How should we feel about Harry hoping Kreacher will bring him a sandwich at the end of the Battle of Hogwarts? Structural attempts at house-elf liberation in the wizarding world seem ineffective. What lessons can we gain about anti-racism and other social justice movements from such attempts as SPEW? Christine helps us see that there are insights to be gained about allyship and social change from how the characters struggle with the abolition of house-elf slavery. This is the value of a story that does not provide easy answers, she explains. We also talk about "cancel culture" and how to keep the study of literature relevant to both students and society at large. Read Katy's chapter on "The Real House-Elves of J.K. Rowling," Emily's essay analyzing "Dobby the Robot," Christine's essay on "The House Elf Problem," and more scholarly perspectives on house-elves in Muggle Studies. Which approach do you find the most compelling? In this episode's special Owl Post segment, we discuss one listener's question about how to understand Harry and Professor McGonagall's troubling use of Unforgivable Curses. Should we...forgive them? What do you think?

TW: sexual assault, enslavementThis is episode 1 of a 4 part series called Creatures of the Lost Story Arc! Thanks to our Patron, Josephine, she gave us this wonderful idea of focusing on the creatures in Harry Potter whose stories did not take a prime focus in the series and even less in the movies. We are going heavy in the #politicalthemes for the next two months so get ready for this crazy ride! This episode we focus on our House Elves! Dobby, Kreacher, Winky, Pipi! There is so much behind the house elves, their story lines and their enslavement that we decided to do an episode just for them to give them some much needed justice. Warning, there will be tears whenever Dobby is involved and Jenny is showing a lot of feelings. If you want to become a Patron, find us here: www.patreon.com/thethreebroomchicksWe are the Three Broomchicks, serving you the finest witchcraft biweekly on a podcast all about your favorite Wizarding World.

Hello all you witches, wizards, and magical people! For Episode 3 of ProtegoCast, Emma, Jordan, and Tylor dive into the subject of elfish welfare and try to imagine a better world for House-Elves in the future of the wizarding world. Also in this episode:  Why are House-Elves not included in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them? What do we know about House-Elves? Is the name House-Elf speciesist?  Tylor shares an important term relevant to animal rights and social justice movements. Tylor also shares a way to rephrase the term “House-Elves” to remove the focus on their usefulness to wizardkind: “Elves used in houses.”  What can we learn from the difference of opinions we see in Elves used in houses: Dobby is delighted to be free, however, Winky and Kreacher have very different opinions?  Hagrid argues that it’s “kinder” to let Elves work - how is this hindering the progress of Elfish Welfare? What sort of parallels can we draw between these arguments and discussions we see when advocating for animal rights?  What should the end-goal be for House-Elf activists?  We also answer a brilliant question from one of our listeners regarding last week’s Merpeople episode and discuss the practices we think Sea World would have to change to become a more ethical, animal rights friendly organization. We’ll return soon for another episode exploring animal rights in the Wizarding World, but in the meantime, be sure to send us your thoughts: will you be using “Elves used in houses” from now on? What are your opinions on improving Elfish rights? What other exploitation-first language examples can you think of?  Don’t forget to leave a review, join our Patreon for perks and bonus content, and - on behalf of all magical creatures - Protego Maxima! This week on High-Dere, Ian & Joe record live from the Wuhan wet market, I mean… Los Angeles, to deliver another action-packed episode, bringing you the latest on their quarantine lockdown. As the heavy hand of Covid-19 loosens it’s clammy grip on the world, we celebrate the new ElfTree Media Day with a company update! Our eyes “well with the tears of our past” as we dip into the lack of continuity and suspension of disbelief while Harry Potter and friends disappear, unnoticed by muggles on Platform 9 3/4.We marvel at the differences between the elegant elves of Lord of the Rings and the mischievous wizard slave House Elves in the Harry Potter series and how the death of Dobby brought Ian to his emotional knees. We touch base with Val Kilmer and dip into a grab bag of topics such as how Joe got his start in music, the Jay and Silent Bob reboot, creepy Bill Gates, the strange condition of getting older and the recent deaths of Fred Willard, Little Richard and Roy Horn. *FUN FACT - Roy Horn was attacked by his tiger on Ian’s birthday. Then, we scratch our heads because of Joe Biden’s middle name and if we think this bumbling hair sniffing politician will become the “official” DNC candidate in 2020. Joe shares an interesting conversation he has with a doctor who reveals some insight on the pandemic and possible hidden secrets behind the veil, including a possible sinister plan of high level Masons using the Bible as their guide to manipulate and control humanity. *Dun! Logan and Ali continue their Harry Potter binge and this week its Chamber of Secrets! we discuss the new major themes introduced from prejudice, and identity to fear of the 'other' from the introduction of House Elves and Voldemorts 'true-blood' ideology. Chamber of Secrets lays the foundation for the final conflict of the series, but is it a good stand alone film? Chamber is essentially anti-Slytherin propaganda, but is that a bad thing? The rotating door of Defense against the Dark Arts teachers brings us Professor Lockhart and all his dripping ego, but is he underused in the film? Tom Riddle and his diary are the next piece of 'endgame' material introduced early on in the series and the Chamber of Secrets itself is a clever narrative tool to introduce ancient Hogwarts lore to the viewer, but does the film hold up?Follow us on Twitter: @helloalievans + @HedrichFiles

What can Hermione do better to make sure House Elves feel empowered? What parallels does this narrative have to the emancipation of slaves? Are house elves really happy, or is that just brainwashing at work?    Here's the article I reference to center our discussion: Emancipation Evoked Mix of Emotions for Freed Slaves.   On a lighter note, we talk about how Jessica identifies with Neville, how if you don't have a Ron in your friend group you are definitely the Ron of your friend group, the Aunt Becky scandal and its parallels to the Malfoy family, and much more.    Support the podcast and get some awesome rewards: www.patreon.com/acciopolitics.
