Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. We roll out with three Jangles -- news with a Jewish angle. Borschel-Dan gives her favorite actress, 96-year-old June Squib, a shoutout for her recent Tony nomination for "Marjorie Prime." Hoffman discusses his recent discovery of a famous Jewish porn star and also the new reboot of "Lord of the Flies" which hints that one of the boys is Jewish. We then turn to "Cast a Giant Shadow," the 1966 biopic of Colonel Mickey Marcus. David Daniel "Mickey" Marcus was a complicated character who was foundational to the organization of what became the Israel Defense Force. The United States Army colonel, who was later dubbed Israel's first general, was also instrumental at the Nuremberg Trials. Kirk Douglas plays Marcus and the rest of the all-star cast includes Senta Berger, Yul Brynner, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra and Angie Dickinson. The movie maven and our host disagreed about the film, so stick around to see if "Cast a Giant Shadow" gets an "oy," "meh" or "not bad" in this week's The Reel Schmooze. Old Friends Farm Location: Georgetown, KY Mission: Dignified retirement for racing legends. Star Resident: "Academy Award" (Donated by Angie Dickinson). Featured Legends • Frank Sinatra • Lucille Ball • Bette Davis • Walter Matthau • Jimmy Stewart • Jack Nicholson Source: Hollywood and Horsepower Podcast • May 14, 2026 Read Time: 52 min audio Introduction In this episode of Hollywood and Horsepower, host Mark interviews Michael Blowen, the legendary Boston Globe critic who transitioned from interviewing movie stars to founding the world's largest thoroughbred retirement farm. The conversation explores the "human" side of Hollywood icons and the shared DNA between the film industry and horse racing. Detailed Summary The Evolution of Hollywood Access and Journalism Michael Blowen reflects on his tenure as an entertainment writer for the Boston Globe during a period he describes as the transition from "old Hollywood" to the new. Unlike the modern era of publicist-controlled phone interviews, Blowen was often sent on-location to observe movie sets firsthand. He notes that being physically present allowed him to witness the authentic friction and "fights" that occur during production, providing a level of reporting that is impossible in today's highly managed media environment. He views his current work with horses as a natural extension of his career, remarking that his retired thoroughbreds are his current "movie stars". The Jimmy Stewart Protocol During an interview, Jimmy Stewart revealed a stack of red envelopes on his desk—handwritten thank-you notes for fans who sent him birthday cards. "These people are not customers... they are your friends, and you should treat them that way." Iconic Friendships and Behind-the-Scenes Lore The discussion highlights several intimate anecdotes involving Hollywood royalty. Blowen shares a transformative lesson in humility from Jimmy Stewart regarding the importance of treating fans as "friends," a philosophy Blowen later adopted at his farm. He also recounts humorous and poignant moments with Jack Nicholson, who valued Blowen's friendship because he never acted as a "go-between" in a town built on transactional relationships. Other stories include the brilliance of the Epstein brothers—the writers of Casablanca—and the business foresight of Lucille Ball, who greenlit Star Trek and Mission Impossible against her board's wishes. The "Fever Pitch" Incident and Forging Bonds Blowen details a unique encounter with director Richard Brooks following a scathing review Blowen wrote for the film Fever Pitch. After a heated phone call filled with "every curse word in the world," Blowen challenged Brooks to a face-to-face interview. This confrontation led to a deep, lasting friendship, illustrating Blowen's belief that the "curtain dropping" allows one to truly know the people behind the fame. He notes that both the movie and horse businesses are remarkably small, interconnected worlds where reputation is everything. Old Friends Farm: A Gentle Landing Champion CareRetirement for Derby Winners Public AccessFace-to-face with Legends Founded by Michael Blowen in Georgetown, KY, to ensure thoroughbreds receive the respect they've earned after their racing careers end. Old Friends Farm and the Legacy of Thoroughbreds The final segment focuses on Blowen's current mission: Old Friends Farm. He describes the farm as a place for horses to have a "gentle landing" after their careers. He shares how actress Angie Dickinson helped fund the retirement of a horse appropriately named "Academy Award." The farm has become a major Kentucky tourist destination where fans can meet legends like Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup winners, treating them with the same reverence once reserved for the stars of the silver screen. Key Data Old Friends Farm: Recognized as the largest thoroughbred retirement farm in the world. Rescue Funding: Angie Dickinson donated $5,000 to secure the retirement of the stallion "Academy Award". Location: The farm is located in Georgetown, Kentucky, approximately 14 minutes from Tony's Steak & Seafood. To-Do / Next Steps Visit oldfriendsequine.org to learn more about thoroughbred retirement or to schedule a tour. Look up the archived Boston Globe columns of Diane White for examples of acclaimed, timeless writing. Dine at Tony's Steak & Seafood in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Lexington, or Bowling Green to support the show's sponsor. Check the Old Friends website for information on meeting Little Brown, the farm's resident miniature horse. Conclusion Michael Blowen's life story serves as a bridge between the high-stakes world of Hollywood glamour and the quiet dignity of a Kentucky horse farm. By applying the lessons of character and humility learned from cinema legends to the care of equine athletes, he has created a unique legacy that honors the "stars" of both industries.

Welcome back to Shoot the Hostage! We are three episodes deep into Dan's Identity season, and things are getting… well, icky. This week, we're tackling Brian De Palma's 1980 classic/controversy magnet, Dressed to Kill. Retroactively functioning as a best of De Palma, this film features many of the hallmarks you would expect from the director – voyeurism, shower scenes, and enough split diopter shots to make you feel like your eyeballs are watching separate movies. Join us as we unpack this 80s slasher-adjacent thriller. We discuss why Nancy Allen deserved better than a Razzy nomination, and how Angie Dickinson proves that being nearly 50 is the new 21. We also dive into the character identities and why the twist is about as subtle as a brick to the face. Plus, we explore why watching movies on Tubi means being interrupted by Danica Patrick trying to sell us car insurance. What to expect from this episode: Why Brian De Palma is basically a giant pervert with a very expensive camera. Dan's “bonfire of opinions” regarding the 10-minute dialogue-free art gallery scene. A breakdown of why a binary calculator that only holds 20 numbers is the worst invention ever. Sarah's internal struggle between Michael Caine being a “Tory” and being a “Great.” A dive into 80s slasher tropes and why this is basically Psycho with more pubic hair. The mystery of whose leg is on the movie poster. A completely unsolicited but necessary tangent about Andrew MacCarthy and the movie Mannequin. Our attempts to sensitively navigate this films “Wild West” approach to transgender representation. Why Nancy Allen kicking a bloke in the balls is the peak of her filmography.

Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. In a gripping special episode of her appearance on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, seasoned police officer Autumn Clifford pulls back the curtain on what Hollywood gets wrong about law enforcement and especially about women in the force. Known for her straight-shooting style and no-fluff advice, Autumn isn't just a cop, she's also a coach, podcast host, and powerful voice challenging outdated narratives about female officers. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. “She smashes stereotypes every time she puts on the badge,” says a fan on Facebook. And it's true, Autumn's story proves that real-life police work, especially from the perspective of a woman, is far more complex and courageous than what Hollywood often shows. It is also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other platforms. In this special episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast , Autumn recounts one of the most intense moments of her early police career: a domestic violence call that turned into a standoff with an armed suspect holding his partner hostage. While action movies might glamorize this as a gun-blazing, adrenaline-fueled rescue, Autumn explains the reality. Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . “It wasn't about kicking in doors or pulling a trigger,” she says. “It was about using my voice, my presence, and my training to deescalate. We talked him down. We saved lives that day. That's the part you don't see in the movies.” The episode dives deep into the gritty truth of police work and reveals how television and film often reduce female cops to one-dimensional roles: either hyper-sexualized, overly emotional, or placed in administrative tasks rather than on the frontlines. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. “You know what's wild?” Autumn asks. “Just type ‘Female Police Officer Stereotypes' into any AI tool and you'll see the same tired nonsense. That we're too weak, too emotional, not respected enough to lead. That stuff is still circulating. And it's false.” Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. As Autumn tells it, these stereotypes aren't just insulting, they're harmful. They can impact hiring, promotions, and the way the public and fellow officers perceive female professionals. But she's not here to complain, she's here to change the conversation. “Do you know how many women applied to become officers because of Angie Dickinson in Police Woman?” she points out. “Representation matters. Back then, she was the first to lead a successful police drama. Today, we need more real stories out there. Not just fiction.” You can listen to his stories and interview on our website for free in addition to platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and other major podcast platforms. She draws inspiration from characters like Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs and Marge Gunderson from Fargo, women who were smart, tough, and quietly powerful. “When I ran the obstacle course, I pictured Jodie Foster's Clarice running beside me,” Autumn laughs. “That's how much that mattered.” Autumn's message reaches beyond the badge. Through her coaching podcast and her website AutumnClifford.com, she guides people to become the best versions of themselves. Her no-nonsense style resonates with those looking to break through barriers in their own lives. Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. “If you're stuck, if you're burnt out, if you feel like no one understands, you're not alone,” she says. “I've been there. My podcast isn't just stories. It's strategy. It's support. It's soul.” Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium and most all social media platforms. In her first podcast episode, Autumn shared her frustrations with law enforcement culture and how a back injury forced her to redefine her purpose. That journey became the foundation for her coaching work. Now, she brings on world-class guests, shares raw insights, and offers tools for transformation. “She's not just talking to cops,” says one listener. “She's talking to anyone who feels like they've been underestimated.” Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. So the next time you watch a cop drama or a crime thriller, ask yourself, Do you know what really happens out there? Do you know what these women are capable of? Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. EPISODE 56 - “MARJORIE REYNOLDS: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 10/07/2024 Most film fanatics agree that after the Paramount Picture's holiday classic “Holiday Inn” (1942), actress MARJORIE REYNOLDS, who gave a star-turn as struggling actress Linda Mason who gets a break singing and dancing in the seasonal nightclub run by BING CROSBY, should have been a big star. However, for reasons not quite clear, she didn't rise into the stratosphere. While she had a very respectable and long career, she just didn't soar to the top, as expected. As our Star of the Month, we will take a look into Marjorie Reynolds' life and career and explore our theories on why “Holiday Inn” did not make her a major star.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Christmas In the Movies (2023), by Jeremy Arnold; Whatever Became of…10th Series (1986), by Richard Lamparski; My Heart Belongs (1976), by Mary Martin; Scarlet Fever (1977), by William Pratt (including the collection of Herb Bridges); The Film Lovers Companion (1997), by David Quinlan; Biography of Marjorie Reynolds, July 25, 1942, Paramount Pictures;  “Super Cinderella,” November 1942, by William Lynch value, Silver Screen magazine; “Marjorie's Horse Comes In,” November 7, 1942, by Kyle Crichton, Collier's Magazine; Versatility Pays Off for Marjorie Reynolds,” March 10, 1944, by Hedda Hopper, Los Angeles, Times; “Divorce Plans Discussed by Miss Reynolds,” July 23, 1951, by Hedda Hopper, Los Angeles, Times; “Marjorie Reynolds to Be Wed to Film Editor,” May 16, 1952, Los Angeles, Times; “Marjorie Reynolds Weds Film Editor,” May 18, 1953, The Sedalia Democrat (Missouri); “Marjorie Reynolds: Sixty Years in the Film Business,” April 1984, by Colin Briggs, Hollywood Studio Magazine; “Marjorie Reynolds, 79, Actress, In Classic Films and on Television,” February 16, 1997, The New York Times; TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; IBDB.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Holiday Inn (1942), starring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Marjorie Reynolds, & Virginia Dale; Wine, Women, and Song (1933), starring Lilyan Tashman; Murder In Greenwich Village (1937), starring Richard Arlen & Fay Wray; Tex Rides With The Boy Scouts (1937), starring Tex Ritter; The Overland Express (1938), starring Buck Jones; Western Trails (1938), starring Bob Baker; Six Shootin' Sheriff (1938), starring Ken Maynard; Star Spangled Rhythm (1942), starring Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, Veronica Lake, & Alan Ladd; Dixie (1943), starring Bing Crosby & Dorothy Lamour; Up In Mabel's Room (1944), starring Dennis O'Keefe & Gail Patrick; Ministry of Fear (1944), starring Ray Milland; Three Is A Family (1944), starring Charles Ruggles & Fay Bainter; Bring On The Girls (1945), starring Veronica Lake & Eddie Bracken; Monsieur Beaucaire (1946), starring Bob Hope & Joan Caulfield; The Time Of Their Lives (1946), starring Bud Abbott & Lou Costello; Meet Me On Broadway (1946), starring Fred Brady & Spring Byington; Heaven Only Knows (1947), Bob Cummings & Brian Donlevy; Badmen of Tombstone (1949), starring Barry Sullivan & Broderick Crawford; That Midnight Kiss (1949), starring Mario Lanza & Kathryn Grayson; The Great Jewel Robber (1950), starring David Brian; Home Town Story (1951), starring Jeffry Lynn, Alan Hale Jr, & Marilyn Monroe; Models, Inc (1952), starring Howard Duff & Coleen Gray; His Kind of Woman (1951), starring Robert Mitchum, Jane Russell, & Vincent Price; The Silent Witness (1962), starring Tristram Coffin & George Kennedy; Pearl (1978), starring Angie Dickinson, Dennis Weaver, & Robert Wagner; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. In the last 10-20 years, attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people in America have shifted due to more positive visibility and evolving cultural norms. Cynthia takes a look at two moments from 1970s television that revealed glimpses of LGBTQ+ allyship—a talk show moment and a 1974 episode of Police Woman. In 1970, June Lockhart appeared on The Virginia Graham Show and stopped the hostess in her tracks, pushing back on stereotypes and tropes common for the time. And the story of how a 54-year-old clip is available for viewing is its own testament to advocacy. LGBTQ+ scholar and media documentarian Steven Capsuto's book, Alternate Channels, helped Cynthia connect the June Lockhart dot to an episode of Police Woman.  Capsuto's book is an essential work for every media, gender, and social justice scholar. He traces television and even radio's early depiction of mostly gay characters and the absence of lesbians. His book also details the LGBTQ+ community's organization and support from straight allies that fought against distorted and ugly depictions of gay and lesbian characters in television and film for more than 75 years. The overall trend in American society has been toward greater understanding and support for LGBTQ+ people and this is, to a significant degree, the result of advocates and allies pushing for more positive and diverse characterizations in popular culture. Television largely ignored lesbians until the 1970s and even then, the characters were bitter, violent, and unstable. With just a few sentences, June Lockhart, in real life, and Angie Dickinson, as Sgt. Pepper Anderson, showed viewers the power of LGBTQ+ allyship.  STEVEN CAPSUTO Website - http://alternatechannels.net/ Alternate Channels, 20th Anniversary Revised Edition (2020) by Steven Capsuto http://alternatechannels.net/book/ MENTIONS June Lockhart, Virginia Graham, Angie Dickinson, Rev. Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Bold and bawdy, for a time in the 1970's LaWanda Page was the Queen of Comedy -- at least the type featured on numerous x-rated "party records". From early days as a "Fire Dancer", LaWanda worked the "chitlin' circuit" of clubs in the south, developing her standup act and developing friendships with other comics including Redd Foxx. After issuing a number of naughty albums on the Laff label, LaWanda got a call from Redd asking her to join the cast of his new sitcom Sanford and Son". She said yes, and the producer blew a gasket because her acting skills were at best limited. Redd famously said "if she goes, I go" and the rest is sitcom history. So take yourself back to the days when you would put on certain records "after the kids go to bed" and have a laugh with LaWanda, The Queen of Comedy. As always find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more LaWanda? Most of LaWanda's albums are very NSFW -- though if you want a quick primer in urban slang of the 70s they are a great source. This track is taken from the one mainstream comedy record she did and while the language was toned down, the point was still sharp. https://youtu.be/Evsd1jpiMuQ?si=MzW09WALAqYyVhBn LaWanda's Aunt Esther was a cornerstone of Sanford and Son -- and LaWanda played it to the hilt (as did Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford). Here's some of Aunt Esther's best.https://youtu.be/0ppXVtCoA_E?si=-o_JFFQSPEYLI5fK Here's a time capsule -- it the Dean Martin Celebrity Roast of Angie Dickinson -- featuring LaWanda as one of the roasters -- only she turned most of her fire on Dino. Angie Schworer is a Broadway stage actress and dancer who got her start working at Walt Disney World, where she performed in 15 Years of Magic and the Diamond Horseshoe Revue, and she opened Disney MGM Studios!  From there, Angie headed to New York where her Broadway career started in 1991 when she booked "The Will Rogers Follies." She went on to shows such as "Crazy For You," "Sunset Boulevard," "Annie Get Your Gun," "Young Frankenstein," "Catch Me If You Can" (where she was an Astaire Award nominee), "Big Fish," "Something Rotten!," and most recently played Minnie in "Some Like It Hot." Despite these amazing credits, Angie's probably best known for 2 shows. The first was "The Producers" in 2001. She was in the original Broadway cast an ensemble member and was the Ulla understudy. She also did the national tour for a year, and then returned to Broadway in 2003 and served as the permanent Ulla replacement until the show closed in 2007, making her the longest-running Ulla. She was also in the 2005 movie starring Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, and Will Ferrell. The other show she's best known for is "The Prom," where she starred as Angie Dickinson. She was nominated for the 2019 Chita Rivera Award for Outstanding Female Dancer in a Broadway Show for her performance. Enjoy listening to incredible Angie Schworer! When TVs entered living rooms and Cinerama lit up movie screens, teens went nuts for Troy Donahue. Born Merle Johnson Jr. he was discovered at The Golden Pheasant restaurant in Calabasas by bigwigs, William Asher and James Sheldon. Signed to Rock Hudson's manager Henry Wilson, Troy won the role of Johnny in A Summer Place and was a teen idol by the morning after opening night. A screen dream, Troy's reality was a nightmare. Author Michael Gregg Michaud has written books about Sal Mineo, Mae West, Marlene Dietrich and Diane Mcbain. Michael joins us to discuss his biography, Inventing Troy Donahue: The Making of a Movie Star.Long intrigued by the darker reality behind Hollywood's seemingly perfect presentation, Michael helps us understand the challenges that shaped Troy's life. He lost his father at 14 and undiagnosed dyslexia adversely affected his grades and his sense of worth. Troy began drinking in middle school. He says he was drunk all the way through his two TV series, Surfside 6 and Hawaiian Eye and unable to master new lines because of his learning disability and his inebriation. By the time he made Paul Springs Weekend, he was downing three codeine laced aspirins with a pint of vodka, followed by four lines of cocaine just to get himself up and out the door. This regimen was quickly followed by a career on the skids, financial ruin and four failed marriages. Troy's charm, humor, wisdom and gratitude pulled him through recovery and bonded him for life with ex-wives, girlfriends and screen partners, Suzanne Pleshette, Sandra Dee, Connie Stevens, Diane McBain and Angie Dickinson. We also learn from Michael about his other books, including a brand new one on Mae West's nightclub act. It's called Mae West and Her Adonises.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending the new doc series on Paramount +, Willie Nelson & Family and Loudermilk on Amazon.Path Points of Interest:Michael Gregg Michaud on AmazonInventing Troy Donahue: The Making of a Movie StarTroy Donahue on WikipediaMichael Gregg Michaud on FacebookMichael Gregg Michaud on InstagramWillie Nelson & FamilyLoudermilk - Amazon Prime

Ian and Don saddle up and head West for a revealing look at Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo!Yes, this is a John Wayne movie, but the 1959 epic about outnumbered lawmen in a small town beset by hired killers is as much a showcase for its supporting talent as it is for the Duke! Angie Dickinson makes her big screen debut as a traveling con artist who falls for the top-billed stoic lawman; Dean Martin co-stars as Wayne's alcoholic former deputy; and teen heartthrob Ricky Nelson shows up as an utterly mesmerizing cross between a wet-behind-the-ears Elvis Presley and Han Solo!In this spoiler-filled review, the guys dig into their history with Westerns and revel in the ideas and delivery that set Rio Bravo apart--including its unexpectedly stark look at the ravages of addiction. They also make the case for Rio Bravo as a great companion piece to Barbie; appreciate character actor extraordinaire Ward Bond; and explore the wonderful world of the "Free Blockbuster" movement!Show LinksWatch the Rio Bravo trailer.Order Rio Bravo on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, now available from Warner Bros.
