The podcast rulebook says you have to cover a plane movie for episode #747, so I went with the daddy of the '70s disaster craze. The planes are 707s in Airport, but oh well. George Seaton writes & directs a cast of stars & Oscar-winners (including Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Jean Seberg, George Kennedy and Jacqueline Bissett). He was rewarded with a blockbuster hit that snagged 10 Oscar nominations (Helen Hayes even won for her adequate supporting performance) and it started a run of Airport flicks. Those 3 sequels and the various disaster films this influenced followed the formula of intertwining stories, romance, some humour and a lot of peril (in this case, there's a Heflin bomb onboard). This is one of the better ones. It's entertaining and has a thrilling climax. So spend some time hearing about Airport. Subscribe to my channel in your podcast app. Rate my show and review it too. Cool Hand Luke (1967) Review — Paul Newman, George Kennedy & One of Cinema's Most Quoted Lines

Message Dan and MikeWe finally got Dan in front of Cool Hand Luke for the first time, and this one did not disappoint. The 1967 Stuart Rosenberg film stars Paul Newman as Lucas Jackson — a decorated, easygoing war veteran who ends up on a Florida chain gang and absolutely refuses to be broken. It's a simple premise with a whole lot going on underneath it.We dig into what makes the film work, starting with Paul Newman's performance, which is somehow both understated and completely magnetic. George Kennedy won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dragline — and we get into the wild behind-the-scenes story of how he paid $5,000 out of pocket to a consulting firm just to get his name in front of Oscar voters. It worked. His only Oscar, but it paid dividends for the rest of his career. We also talk about Strother Martin as Captain and Morgan Woodward as Boss Godfrey — a character who says nothing the entire film and still manages to be one of the most menacing screen villains either of us has seen. The supporting cast is stacked with actors who weren't famous yet: Dennis Hopper, Harry Dean Stanton, and a young Rance Howard (Ron Howard's father) all make appearances. The conversation covers the film's obvious spiritual imagery — the crucifixion pose after the egg-eating scene, the cross-shaped road in the final aerial shot, the Christ-like arc of Luke's story. We also trace the film's clear influence on what came after it: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, First Blood, The Shawshank Redemption — you can draw a straight line from Cool Hand Luke to all of them.On the craft side, the cinematography by Conrad Hall is remarkable — this is the same DP who later won Oscars for Road to Perdition and American Beauty. And Lalo Schifrin's score, which became so ubiquitous it ended up as the theme for ABC Nightly News, gets its due as well.100% on Rotten Tomatoes. 92 Metacritic. In the Library of Congress. If you haven't seen it, this one's a must.Support the showOh Brother Podcast:Support the Show! Summertime calls for a trip out to the woods for some good old-fashioned Bigfoot hunting! You wouldn't think a movie called DEMONWARP (1988) would be about killer sasquatch, and on a certain level you're not wrong - calling this a Bigfoot movie is a simplification of the other absurd stuff that goes on here. There are also zombies and aliens, and yes it's all supposed to connect. Is it a good movie? Absolutely not, but it does star George Kennedy. The 70s Were a Disaster!

Welcome to the Video Store Podcast. As the 1960s rolled into the 1970s, something changed in Hollywood. Movies got bigger. Louder. More chaotic. And sometimes… they were a total disaster, in the best way possible. These were practical, physical, dangerous productions, massive sets, real stunts, and ensemble casts packed with stars who weren't guaranteed to make it to the end.The disaster movie wasn't born in the '70s but it peaked there. Airplanes in crisis, cities collapsing, ships overturning, skyscrapers burning. This week, my picks come from the golden age of disaster movies as we look at four of my favorite disaster movies that still hold up, and that showcase exactly why the 1970s did the disaster movies better than anyone else ever has.Airport (1970)Set over one snowbound night at a busy Chicago airport, Airport weaves together multiple storylines, an overworked airport manager, a conflicted pilot, strained relationships, and a desperate man with a dangerous plan. The tension builds gradually, before the larger stakes take hold. What makes Airport work so well is it's scale. Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, George Kennedy, Jean Seberg, Helen Hayes, the cast is stacked with faces you may not know by name, but absolutely recognize. The movie treats its ensemble seriously, letting each storyline unfold without feeling forced. It was a massive hit, one of the earliest true “blockbusters,” and set the template the entire decade would follow: big casts, grounded storytelling, and high-stakes tension. Earthquake (1974)Earthquake promised exactly what it delivered: the complete destruction of Los Angeles.Centered in Los Angeles, the film introduces a wide range of characters, before unleashing a catastrophic quake that tears the city apart. Once it hits, the movie becomes pure spectacle: collapsing buildings, massive destruction, and survival stories unfolding in real time.At the center is Charlton Heston, bringing his signature intensity to a man caught between personal turmoil and unfolding disaster. Around him is a deep ensemble cast, including familiar faces like George Kennedy, Lorne Green and Ava Gardner.Earthquake was create as an event, not just it a movie, it was a physical experience. The filmmakers pioneered the shaker mount camera system to simulate realistic movement, and introduced Sensurround, blasting sub-audible bass through giant speakers so powerful they made seats (and sometimes ceiling tiles) vibrate. The stunt work is amazing: real falls, real debris, real crashes. In the midst of all the destruction, the personal stories carry real weight, making the survival (or loss) of characters more emotional than expected. It's pure disaster chaos. The Poseidon Adventure (1972)Set aboard a luxury ocean liner on New Year's Eve, the movie quickly turns into a survival story when a rogue wave capsizes the ship. The survivors must navigate an upside-down world, climbing their way through the wreckage in hopes of escape.Led by Gene Hackman as a determined and unconventional preacher, the movie leans heavily into character dynamics. Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelley Winters, Jack Albertson, it's another stacked cast, but no one is safe simply because they're famous. Relationships evolve, tensions flare, and every character has a purpose. The writing gives each person a distinct arc, making the journey feel and survival feel important. Add in a powerful score by John Williams, and you get one of the best disaster movies ever made. The Towering Inferno (1974)Set in the world's tallest skyscraper during its grand opening, The Towering Inferno follows what happens when overlooked safety shortcuts turn into a full-scale catastrophe. The film is powered by two Hollywood titans: Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. Their dynamicm, one a no-nonsense fire chief, the other the building's architect, gives the film a strong emotional core amid the chaos. The practical effects and stunt work are relentless: real fire, real smoke, real danger. You can feel the heat. It's also one of the best examples of the genre's ensemble storytelling—multiple perspectives, intersecting arcs, and constant tension. And once again, John Williams' score gives you a movie that is epic and intense. These movies hold up today because of the disaster but also the story telling. They take their time. They let you meet the characters, understand their relationships, and invest in their outcomes. So when disaster strikes, it actually matters. And there's no guarantee of survival, not even for the biggest stars.Long before the term “blockbuster” became standard (thanks to Jaws), these films were already defining what that meant. No matter which of these you choose, you're guaranteed a movie night that's anything but a disaster.Until next time — be kind, rewind. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski have a lot to say about this week's batch of physical media. Maybe not as much as the most successful franchise entry amongst them, but certainly about Ernst Lubitsch's romantic comedy about thieves in love. Most definitely about Monty Python's religious-skewering masterpiece. But there is also the troubled transports carrying George Kennedy and the out-of-control one that ranks as one of the great action films of the 1980s. An obscure, hard-to-find comedy about UFO seekers is the first of two Fred Ward headliners this week which leads into two films the guys have some fondness for including Orion's attempt at an American James Bond and one of the very first masked do-gooders.4:29 - Criterion (Trouble in Paradise (1932) (4K), Monty Python's Life of Brian (4K))22:57 - Universal (Meet the Fockers (4K))29:46 - Kino (Death Ship (4K), Runaway Train (4K), UFOria 4K, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (4K), The Phantom (4K))1:41:12 - More New Titles (Becoming Led Zeppelin, Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday, Midwinter Break)1:42:31 - New Blu-ray AnnouncementsCLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCAST OR BUY FROM MOVIEZYNGBe sure to check outErik's Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten TomatoesCritics' Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, ILChicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streamingPhysical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library.(Direct purchases help the Movie Madness podcast with a few pennies.)Erik's Linktree - Where you can follow Erik and his work anywhere and everywhere. The Movie Madness Podcast has been recognized by Million Podcasts as one of the Top 100 Best Movie Review Podcasts as well as in the Top 60 Film Festival Podcasts and Top 100 Cinephile Podcasts. Everything you want in a cheesy disaster...disaster. If you've ever wondered what would happen if a disaster movie inhaled a gallon of jet fuel, ignored every known law of physics, and then sprinted straight into absurdity with a grin, The Concorde... Airport '79 is your answer. This is high “so bad it's good” cinema - a movie so committed to escalating nonsense that it becomes a kind of accidental masterpiece. It doesn't just jump the shark; it straps the shark to the Concorde and fires it into international airspace. The effects are gloriously, unapologetically cheesy. Miniatures wobble, explosions bloom like overcooked popcorn, and the Concorde itself seems to operate on a proprietary fuel source called “plot convenience.” Missiles zigzag like confused bottle rockets, fighter jets materialize only to be obliterated moments later, and physics as a concept is treated less like a rulebook and more like a vague suggestion. The sheer number of McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom IIs that get blown out of the sky “just because” is almost impressive - like the movie is trying to win a bulk discount on destruction. Then there's Robert Wagner as the villain, a man so dedicated to covering up his crimes that he creates exponentially worse problems at every turn. It's like watching someone try to put out a grease fire with dynamite. His master plan hinges on an evil corporation deploying what may be the least effective missile system ever conceived - an instrument so catastrophically unreliable that it becomes the film's secret comedic MVP. Every time it fires, you're less worried about the Concorde and more curious about what unintended target it'll embarrassingly fail to destroy next. And presiding over this carnival of chaos is George Kennedy, reprising his role with the energy of a genial battering ram. He doesn't so much act as he exists - a walking, talking, reassuringly friendly phallus of authority who blusters through scenes with unwavering confidence and zero concern for plausibility. It's oddly comforting. In a movie where nothing makes sense and everything explodes, Kennedy is the human equivalent of a thumbs-up. All told, The Concorde... Airport '79 is less a film and more a spectacle of glorious incompetence. The stakes are absurd, the logic is nonexistent, and the execution is delightfully misguided. But that's exactly why it works. It's a beautiful disaster - loud, ridiculous, and endlessly entertaining for anyone who appreciates their cinema served with a heavy side of unintentional comedy.

März 2006 – in Los Angeles.

Lucky for us Police Squad will protect us from crime. Again! And then maybe one more time then about 30 years later. We talk about our favorite jokes and why we think the newest movie will do well.

Greg Alba, Aaron Alexander, and Andrew Gordon (Cinepals) return to wrap up the iconic trilogy starring the legendary Leslie Nielsen as the endlessly clumsy yet lovable Frank Drebin in the final entry of the Naked Gun series. In this reaction, we dive into all the absurd gags, slapstick brilliance, and unforgettable moments from the 1994 comedy classic, including the Oscars sequence, "Nice beaver!" callback, explosive train climax, and Weird Al Yankovic's cameo. We break down how the film satirizes Hollywood, award shows, and action movie tropes with pitch-perfect timing and Nielsen's deadpan brilliance. We also spotlight returning cast members Priscilla Presley as Jane Spencer, George Kennedy as Ed Hocken, and O.J. Simpson as Nordberg, alongside Fred Ward (Tremors) as villain Rocco Dillon, Anna Nicole Smith as Tanya, and Kathleen Freeman as the prison warden. With guest appearances by Raquel Welch, James Earl Jones, and more, this wild finale delivers non-stop laughs. We celebrate the legacy of this franchise, touch on its influence on spoof movies, and share our favorite quotes, like “Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to stay on my toes.” If you're a fan of Airplane!, Hot Shots, or 90s parody films, this one's for you. EPISODE 56 - “MARJORIE REYNOLDS: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 10/07/2024 Most film fanatics agree that after the Paramount Picture's holiday classic “Holiday Inn” (1942), actress MARJORIE REYNOLDS, who gave a star-turn as struggling actress Linda Mason who gets a break singing and dancing in the seasonal nightclub run by BING CROSBY, should have been a big star. However, for reasons not quite clear, she didn't rise into the stratosphere. While she had a very respectable and long career, she just didn't soar to the top, as expected. As our Star of the Month, we will take a look into Marjorie Reynolds' life and career and explore our theories on why “Holiday Inn” did not make her a major star.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Christmas In the Movies (2023), by Jeremy Arnold; Whatever Became of…10th Series (1986), by Richard Lamparski; My Heart Belongs (1976), by Mary Martin; Scarlet Fever (1977), by William Pratt (including the collection of Herb Bridges); The Film Lovers Companion (1997), by David Quinlan; Biography of Marjorie Reynolds, July 25, 1942, Paramount Pictures;  “Super Cinderella,” November 1942, by William Lynch value, Silver Screen magazine; “Marjorie's Horse Comes In,” November 7, 1942, by Kyle Crichton, Collier's Magazine; Versatility Pays Off for Marjorie Reynolds,” March 10, 1944, by Hedda Hopper, Los Angeles, Times; “Divorce Plans Discussed by Miss Reynolds,” July 23, 1951, by Hedda Hopper, Los Angeles, Times; “Marjorie Reynolds to Be Wed to Film Editor,” May 16, 1952, Los Angeles, Times; “Marjorie Reynolds Weds Film Editor,” May 18, 1953, The Sedalia Democrat (Missouri); “Marjorie Reynolds: Sixty Years in the Film Business,” April 1984, by Colin Briggs, Hollywood Studio Magazine; “Marjorie Reynolds, 79, Actress, In Classic Films and on Television,” February 16, 1997, The New York Times; TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; IBDB.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Holiday Inn (1942), starring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Marjorie Reynolds, & Virginia Dale; Wine, Women, and Song (1933), starring Lilyan Tashman; Murder In Greenwich Village (1937), starring Richard Arlen & Fay Wray; Tex Rides With The Boy Scouts (1937), starring Tex Ritter; The Overland Express (1938), starring Buck Jones; Western Trails (1938), starring Bob Baker; Six Shootin' Sheriff (1938), starring Ken Maynard; Star Spangled Rhythm (1942), starring Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, Veronica Lake, & Alan Ladd; Dixie (1943), starring Bing Crosby & Dorothy Lamour; Up In Mabel's Room (1944), starring Dennis O'Keefe & Gail Patrick; Ministry of Fear (1944), starring Ray Milland; Three Is A Family (1944), starring Charles Ruggles & Fay Bainter; Bring On The Girls (1945), starring Veronica Lake & Eddie Bracken; Monsieur Beaucaire (1946), starring Bob Hope & Joan Caulfield; The Time Of Their Lives (1946), starring Bud Abbott & Lou Costello; Meet Me On Broadway (1946), starring Fred Brady & Spring Byington; Heaven Only Knows (1947), Bob Cummings & Brian Donlevy; Badmen of Tombstone (1949), starring Barry Sullivan & Broderick Crawford; That Midnight Kiss (1949), starring Mario Lanza & Kathryn Grayson; The Great Jewel Robber (1950), starring David Brian; Home Town Story (1951), starring Jeffry Lynn, Alan Hale Jr, & Marilyn Monroe; Models, Inc (1952), starring Howard Duff & Coleen Gray; His Kind of Woman (1951), starring Robert Mitchum, Jane Russell, & Vincent Price; The Silent Witness (1962), starring Tristram Coffin & George Kennedy; Pearl (1978), starring Angie Dickinson, Dennis Weaver, & Robert Wagner; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. Send us a textThis week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to back to the late 1950's early 1960's when men smoked heavily, recklessly enjoyed sophisticated cocktails and liked their women the way they wore their suits: skinny and tight! A time when spies and cold wars were the talk of the town, and all the cool cats admired two preeminent and influential thrillers. We're talking 1959's North by Northwest directed by the Master of Suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock and starring Carey Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Jessie Royce Landis, Ned Glass, and Marin Landau against 1963's Charade, directed by Stanley Donen and starring Carey Grant again, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, Ned Glass again, and the mighty George Kennedy.  I'm your host Gino Caputi and joining me this week are two of suave, millionaire Men's Men in their own right, David Johnson DMD and Author/Producer George Young.  Before we break out the martinis: the synopses: North by Northwest follows the exploits of slightly mild-mannered ad agency owner Roger Thornhill who is mistaken for a government agent and abducted.  After that, he is thrown into a world of shadow-y art dealers and fast-talking female special agents who will do anything to protect and advance their positions. Roger's only way out is to follow the trail of mystery to its presidential conclusion.  In Charade, Regina Lambert, a soon to be divorcee quickly finds out she's a widow whose ex-husband has hidden a fortune, by 1963 standards.  With both the government and four of her husband's former associates following her to find the money, she falls s hopelessly in love with one of them, though his identity is never quite known. Which is the coolest caper? Find out!!  Follow the FFF Facebook page!https://www.facebook.com/groups/fabulousfilmandfriends Watch, like and subscribe on Youtube Listen to the audio podcast on buzzsprout:

When we talk about The Naked Gun (1988), we're diving headfirst into a comedy treasure chest—one filled with absurdity, brilliant wordplay, and visual gags that just don't stop. This Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker (ZAZ) film, starring the ever-stoic Leslie Nielsen as the bumbling detective Lt. Frank Drebin, stands as one of the defining examples of slapstick parody. It's a film that has aged remarkably well, continuing to resonate with new audiences and reminding those who saw it back in 1988 just how funny an entirely ridiculous movie can be.Plot and Storytelling: Simplicity at its FunniestAt its core, The Naked Gun is a detective story—a genre that's been spoofed many times but never quite with the same flair as this film. The plot revolves around Lt. Drebin, a man dedicated to solving crimes but utterly incapable of doing so with any amount of skill or professionalism. In The Naked Gun, Drebin is tasked with thwarting a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Los Angeles. The story quickly evolves into a chaotic blend of police procedural satire, ridiculous missteps, and wildly inappropriate antics, all the while managing to maintain an air of sincerity, thanks to Nielsen's deadpan performance. The film plays it smart by not worrying too much about the intricacies of the plot. Instead, it focuses on building its jokes around the absurdity of the situation and the cluelessness of its characters. It's almost as if the ZAZ team were saying, “We know the plot's thin, but you're here for the laughs, right?” And laugh we do—from the first moment to the iconic final act at the baseball stadium. Whether it's a visual gag or a clever line of dialogue, every scene is packed with humour. The Genius of Leslie Nielsen: Deadpan PerfectionBefore The Naked Gun, Leslie Nielsen had a long career in more serious roles but found his true calling as a comedic actor in Airplane! (1980)—also directed by ZAZ. That film launched Nielsen's second wind as a parody star, and his portrayal of Frank Drebin cemented his legacy as the king of deadpan humour. The genius of Nielsen lies in his ability to deliver the most ridiculous lines with the gravitas of a Shakespearean actor. There's no winking at the camera or over-the-top physical comedy; Nielsen plays it as straight as possible, making the absurdity around him even funnier.Take, for example, one of the film's most famous lines: “Nice beaver.” Drebin says this with no awareness of the double entendre, but when Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley) responds by handing him a literal stuffed beaver, the joke lands perfectly. This sort of naive, deadpan delivery that Nielsen mastered makes Frank Drebin one of the most lovable oafs in cinematic history.Supporting Cast: A Perfect EnsembleOf course, Nielsen is supported by a stellar cast, each contributing to the film's comic rhythm. Priscilla Presley plays Jane Spencer, Drebin's love interest, and her straight-laced performance brilliantly complements Nielsen's obliviousness. The chemistry between Presley and Nielsen feels oddly genuine, grounding the film just enough to allow the wild antics around them to feel even more surreal.George Kennedy, as Drebin's partner, Captain Ed Hocken, provides another layer of deadpan delivery, playing the more serious cop who happens to be swept along by Drebin's incompetence. Meanwhile, Ricardo Montalbán, as the villain Vincent Ludwig, brings an elegant, almost Bond-villain-style menace to the role, perfectly contrasting Drebin's clumsy crime-fighting attempts. Montalbán's role is particularly memorable for how seriously he seems to take his part—his dignity adding to the hilarity of the situations he finds himself in.Slapstick and Sight Gags: Nonstop and RelentlessZucker, Abrahams, and Zucker excel in their unique brand of humour, and The Naked Gun is no exception. The film is filled with sight gags that reward multiple viewings. For instance, in the opening scene, Drebin foils an international conspiracy while hilariously bumbling his way through a fight with some of the world's most notorious villains. The film doesn't waste a moment to make you laugh—whether it's Drebin inadvertently causing chaos during a press conference or his notorious attempt to sing the national anthem at a baseball game. One standout moment is the baseball stadium scene, where Drebin, disguised as an umpire, ends up calling the game. This sequence showcases Nielsen's impeccable timing and the film's mastery of physical comedy. Drebin's complete misunderstanding of how baseball works leads to a series of increasingly ridiculous events, all while keeping the assassination plot in the background. It's a perfect example of how The Naked Gun balances slapstick with satire, layering gags on top of each other for maximum effect.Pop Culture and Cultural Impact: The Birth of a ClassicThe Naked Gun was an instant hit when it was released, not just because it was funny, but because it tapped into something fresh at the time: the spoof genre had been gaining steam in the 1980s, but few films did it as relentlessly or as successfully as The Naked Gun. Its success spawned two sequels—The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991) and The Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994)—both continued Drebin's absurd adventures. But the film's influence extended beyond its sequels. It paved the way for other parody films, helping solidify the ZAZ brand of comedy, which had already been popularised by Airplane! and Top Secret! (1984). It also led to an entire generation of comedies that relied on rapid-fire jokes and visual gags, like Hot Shots! (1991) and Scary Movie (2000). Even modern-day comedy shows, like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, owe a debt to The Naked Gun for its ability to blend procedural elements with comedy. The Enduring Legacy of Frank DrebinThe Naked Gun remains a beloved comedy classic over three decades after its release. Part of that is due to its unique combination of clever wordplay, slapstick humour, and pure silliness, but it's also because of the character of Frank Drebin. In a sea of competent, smooth-talking detectives, Drebin is a breath of fresh air—a man who's as clueless as he is sincere. There's something timeless about how Leslie Nielsen approaches the role, never once letting Drebin become a caricature but always playing him with heart, no matter how foolish he seems. For fans of parody, The Naked Gun is essential viewing. It's the kind of film you can watch repeatedly and still find something new to laugh at. Whether you're a die-hard fan revisiting the movie or a newcomer discovering Drebin's antics for the first time, The Naked Gun never fails to deliver pure comedic gold. So, if you haven't yet revisited this classic, now's the time. Just be prepared to laugh—over and over again.
